Confirmed: Rooting & tripping Knox will disable Samsung Pay - Galaxy S6 Edge General

However, we advise you to refrain from rooting your device, as it will disable Samsung Pay, just like KNOX. When you root your device, the integrity gets breached, which is necessary for important and sensitive features like mobile payments.

That post has no concrete evidence (tests done with app/confirmation from samsung) and is pure speculation. Was posted on reddit as well. The article assumes that since Samsung Wallet doesn't work when the phone is rooted, it is most likely that Samsung Pay won't work either.

Don't bet on that. Sammobile has sources inside Samsung and has their stuff in order 99.8% of the time. I wouldn't have posted this if I didn't think the source was credible.

Well I'm screwed...

This sucks if really true.

I can live with that.
Other paying methods like Google Wallet, PayPal with fingerprint and Vodafone Wallet are still working (although you have to use root hiding methods).

I do a lot online buying and pay by cash for gas...etc, so is not really affect me.

Was holding off root for to find our but I caved and rooted to disable tome apps and gain battery life. Many of us won't enjoy it then since we love custom roms and kernels. Someone may find a patch eventually

It depends on whether Samsung Pay functionality is broken only by root or by tripping Knox. If root, then unrooting or using a root blocker may restore functionality. If it depends on Knox, there is almost no hope.

If i root so samsung pay not working forewer ? What about when i unroot device ?

well i had softcard working on Note 3 with root and Xposed but it didnt always work and it appears that this is much deeper.
there is no root for my Verizon Edge yet so i dont have this decision to make but if i did i would probably wait and be sure.

I was anticipating this to be true but still holding out hope. Resisting the urge to root is killing me softly.

Unless Samsung Pay is the most important feature or reason for getting this device, this news is not newsworthy. I'm not going to stay unrooted for a feature I would probably never use. Pulling out the old plastic credit card and using that works every time and is accepted virtually everywhere. I may not be able to say the same for Samsung Pay.

THIS +1000 :good::good::good::good::good:
Did you REALLY get this phone to use it as a credit card?
And yeah, I don't believe much of what I read on SamMobile; when Samsung/ my CARRIER makes an OFFICIAL announcement, then I'll believe it..
Its the internet, remember, stop believing anything you read on it..

Wow that sucks for people who rooted. Samsung pay is pretty neat to have, considering it works just like plastic.

I'm totally on the same page as many here. Even if my phone had Wallet, Pay or some other app, I wouldn't use it--I'd pull out my credit card instead. The downside for me is that I've never kept a smartphone for over a year, and the prospect of listing one on swappa or ebay with broken features that will degrade the value of the device is pretty unattractive. And not rooting is not an option for me.
I also think newbs should be made aware of the consequences of rooting. I'm not worried about most of you guys because you know what you are doing.

Hmmm, lets see. Root is absolutely essential to me and I wont buy a phone that isn't root capable under any circumstances because I'd rather be kicked in the testicles every day as a wake up alarm than own a phone without it.
I've had nfc payments since they started and outside of a few purchases to try it out I haven't used it since. I don't find it any easier to pull out my cell phone than my wallet and half the time I leave the phone in the car anyways when I go in a store. Meanwhile I have to carry my wallet anyways which is filled with all manner of plastic.
I forgot what we were talking about, what was the question again?

Been using Google wallet at coffee shops , Wallgreens, etc. Pay is supposed to be capable of being used at any retail place with a magnetic credit card strip. Love to have the convenience. Anyway, there is much less bloatware on the Samsung S 6 so I think I can wait until further acknowledgement as far as if a developer can come up with a fix to use samsung pay once your phone is rooted which I'm sure will happen.

It is fairly easy to jailbreak an iphone these days... my dad jailbroke his 3gs a few days after he got it and he is the guy who's VCR always flashed 12:00...
It's all fear mongering. It's the same protection as Milestone devices and the Droid. All of them have the OMAP3 eFuse.
Look up Steven Bird's blog (I can't post links yet) he explains it. Said that it's more than likely not to brick the phone. He's got donations up and going now to try and get one to test it himself.
Yup, this FUD has been debunked. Enough with the eFuse DROID X Talk Already
The response from Motorola was that it wouldn't "brick" the phone, but if the efuse was triggered it would render the phone unusable until it was repaired with motorola software. Which pretty much means the folks here at XDA will likely find a way around the efuse without too much trouble

Or they could, I dunno, download it from Motorola's site. Really, all they're doing is a checksum and giving you the opportunity to flash an RUU if they don't match. No Moto repair required.
Wow Motorola, way to go... u just scared off about 3/4 of u'r customers right there. Talk about BS limiting a user on what he/she is able to load on to HIS/HER own phone. Ridiculous!
It's not FUD. It may not "brick" the phone, but it's another attempt to stop the end user, the person that legally purchased the phone, from tinkering with it. Just as the quote I posted above says, they're not inventors. They are profiteers afraid of people, at home, doing what they do better than them.
My friend and I had this conversation the other day. He stated that Sprint has a right to protect their network and any phone they sell you with a discount for buying a plan. He is correct, to a point. Sprint doesn't want us using our phones for more than they give us (despite claims of "unlimited" data) because they have to protect their profit margins. They also don't want us tinkering with our phones because we, tinkerers, could break them. Insurance doesn't cover "tinkering". Sprint is taking a huge up-front hit by selling us the phone as cheap as they do but they recoup that cost by locking us into 2-year contracts. They need to keep us in those contracts to turn a profit. So, I feel they have a right to protect that until the contract is up.
Or, on the other hand, those that purchase their phones outright, without contracts and without subsidies, should have the right to tinker all they like... including the consequences.
E-fuse, what?
I still don't believe it was FUD because of the reasons I mentioned above, but it was successfully bypassed.
EDIT: The e-fuse wasn't bypassed. They got root, which isn't watched by the e-fuse. Putting a new ROM on the phone would, though. Getting root is a start, though, and should allow them to figure out how the e-fuse works. Then I'm sure they can bypass it. It'll just take some more time.

It will never happen. The backlash would just be too much to handle.
And if manufacturers were to begin implementing these types of lockdowns, you know for a fact that they'll just be hacked around sooner or later.
Hello? We are discussing this on XDA... Home to undoubtedly the best group of white hat device hackers I've seen.
We all assume risk when rooting our devices and given the more open nature of Android, there's always the concern that some application will start stealing your data. It's a risk I'm willing to take and I'm sure most everyone else here as well.

Here's the problem with what you stated, the percentage of users rooted compared to non rooted, well are not even close, if they did lock out every new phone with master keys that we would never be able to figure out, well it could happen. Even if they did lose every rooted users support financially, they would still have more than 95 percent of their profiT, that's my fear, it'll hurt but not if sprint, Verizon, etc pays the difference or that kind of sort of thing. For example to make it easy, say all rooted user cause 600,000 in lost profit for sprint that they could have potentially gained, well HTC goes hey well lock the device but we want the difference from the users like us who will not purchase the phone. Anyway that's my take on it, enlighten me with your guys thoughts
It may be time to dust off my Razr.
Carriers get smart, devs get smarter......lets not jump the gun and worry about this nonsense now. I will enjoy my rooted phone for now. If this does go down those of you saying you will go to "dumbphones" are full of it. Even if these phones are locked down tighter than a 17 year old girls tuna you will still use it. I see the future as phones will be so fast why would you need to root; I love to root, I've been rooting ALL my phones since g1 and the sole purpose was the speed my phone up. Dual core phone no root ehh who cares. I will NOT use a free phone just because these phones in the future will possibly be locked. One can only hope this security doesn't see light but if it does I'm sure we'll be ok.

I've heard the "rooted users are the extreme minority" comment countless times, and all logic says it really must be true.
However, when I go to the market, click apps, then all applications, then click top paid, 3 of the top 5 require root. As an honest question, are my market results tailored for my usage history or is that the same "top paid" list everyone sees? If it is indeed the same for everyone then it becomes much harder to quantify rooted users being in the minority.

Completely agree about the smartphone part but do not about the master key part, it would take years like 75 - 100 if the key is properly secure for many and I mean many super computers to solve that algorithm...look at the droids, the only reason on a side note the ps3 master key was released was because the people who secured it messed up in the formula, and that still took 5 years..
the consequence would never be the same.

Android Pay ?? or ...

I'm torn on this because my bank doesn't support android pay yet, I've added my google wallet card and and never used it yet. Now i'm on RR CM13 ROM and like changing my DPI messing around with Xposed... Am I the only one who who can live without Android Pay? Are the trade offs worth it?

I agree, I'm old school. Maybe when it becomes more widely available, ill start caring more.
And Apple pay is not widely used either. This pay system is supposed to be for convenience but its easier to pull out your card even though you have you phone in your hands most of the time.

[WORK-AROUND] Note 7 Gear VR Oculus Ban/Disabled

Very simple work-around to be able to use Gear VR on your Note 7. YOU MUST BE ROOTED IN ORDER FOR THIS TO WORK.
1. Open system/ build.prop with a root browser
2. Edit. ro.product.model=SM-N930T ------> SM-G935T
3. REBOOT! Profit.
I would highly suggest changing to SM-G935T ONLY when you are about to use Gear VR. Then change it back to SM-N930T and reboot when you are finished. It may cause issues with Note 7 related files of you do not

I'll keep my note 7 thank you!
Ok, quick public(ish) rant. I love my original note 7 that I have run for hours in my new GearVR with zero issues. I want to keep my note 7 as it is the best phone I have ever owned and it makes me sad that Samsung/Oculus/AT&T over reacted over a low percentage of failures; however, hopefully this will encourage Samsung to go back to removable batterys and throw in an IR blaster.
Now to the current thread.
I want to continue to use Samsung Pay so rooting, to my knowledge, is currently not an option and side loaded an old version of Oculus Home will still no luck.
So currently I can use the GearVR disabler and use Google Cardboard and whatever other non-oculus VR apps but the polished Oculus apps I am seriously missing.
Is anyone else not planning to give up their amazing note 7s?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but all the original note7 fires were only while at the end of charging right? Only the replacement phones that came out had a fire while not charging or anything. I've seen people talking about these were two different problems from the original to the replacement phones.
And last week I read an article that there were about 1 million still in use. Up until the replacement came out have there been ANY new problems from the originals? The affected devices seemed to go up quickly at the beginning of the launch... Mine has never gotten hot either.
Anyhow, I too would like the older occulus apk if anyone finds them.
Another off topic question, on past rooted phones you could temporarily unroot. If I'm reading correctly once rooted you can't unroot and use Samsung Pay at all? That stinks, I miss root.
cool, it doesnt even work.
Rooted Verizon Note 7, i never had the oculus setup. When i attempted it, I got the Block notice, changed the build.prop and rebooted. The good news is i no longer get the block notice, but now i get a "no network connection" error that others are getting ( similar to "httxx://forums.oculus.com/vip/discussion/28012/network-error-always ). I only needed to activate it once to get the 6 free apps that came with the promotion so this is a bit frustrating.
I spent 2 hours on the phone with Samsung support getting bounced around various departments until finally they sent my request "to the escalation team" for the promotion content to be switched to a different IMEI (I have an S6 as well). Most likely it will fall into a black hole, but we'll see.

A few things, there was never a determination of when in the charge cycle the first batch would fail. The 60% fix went out but never a confirmation of its success when you take into account that sammy doesnt even know the root cause.
Also temperature was never a determination of a device possibly failing, yes cooler running devices is a good thing but not an indicator of good or bad when it comes to this particular issue. Also no reports of abnormally hot devices prior to a burn up.
Lastly it isn't that you cannot unroot, you just cannot un-trip the efuse that is tied to knox and thus prevents samsung pay from working.
So any hope about solution gear vr - note 7 or not? i think i must go my lovely phone back to samy coz gear vr problem!
I do not understand the stupidity of samsung, block the app of gear vr, for not to burn our face the device! This can happen when simply talking on phone. and this would be more serious.
I will not go back to the device, and will not succumb to blackmail. I have the device a month and works perfectly.

Any chance you can ask them to list the actual bands the phone supports?
I'm glad I'll be the recipient of the Exynos (unlocked) version. However i can get with the whole security aspect in regards to Google wallet & Samsung Pay/android pay. Like you mentioned though i NEVER and will EVER use this service, it gets disabled from the moment i get the phone (plus my bank doesn't support it anyway lol).
You pay a premium it should be up to the user as to what he does and yes what he/she risks.
I am very much against taking away the option of root and custom ROMs because of a service being forced upon us.

LOL! Sorry but, how old are you? I'm as disappointed as anyone, but you're acting like a child. You think that because YOU'VE been with T-Mobile "since VoiceStream" T-Mobile should change their decision? Ridiculous. The guy you were talking to can't help you, cannot make any executive decisions and sure as hell isn't passing along your "concerns" to Legere. He also doesn't give a damn that you're cancelling a whopping THREE (3!!!) device orders. Did you think he was going to crumble to his knees, beg you to keep your orders and run tell boss, "we must change our bootloader plans because Mr. VoiceStream is simply NOT having it?"
You were just whining to yourself while he typed, "I understand how you feel" and rubbed your shoulders a bit.
Agreed, complaining to a underpaid rep that probably hates listening to people complain all day everyday is not going to get bootloaders unlocked.

Yet people still complain lol.
You know the bootloader is locked before you buy the device. Deal with it and move on.
Edit: not aimed towards you. Just saying in general of the complainers lol

LMAO...Yea, sure he did.
Useless thread. This is not a surprise and is something we already knew.
I ordered two from TMo and I'm sure that a root method will pop up soon after release.
Motorola had bootlocks on the Bionic and it was still able to be rooted. I bet within a month we'll be rooting with the rest of them.:good::good:

Samsung has officially lost by business. Been a samsung guy since the S3 and I've stuck with them in the years since. It's such a shame that they choose to do this. I don't need Samsung pay, as I have a wallet. Awful that they force these programs down our throats as they're nice to have but are completely unnecessary.

The Galaxy S7 came out in March and it took three months to even figure out how to root it. We don't even have a bootloader unlock for the GS7, and it's been a year since it's release. Might want to lower your expectations as devs are moving away from locked down devices like the Galaxy series in the U.S.
Wow this is like posting water is wet.
I stopped rooting my phones, but I'm still against taking away the option. I just never could pull the trigger on losing Samsung Pay permanently.

I'm in the same boat as you. Unsure of what to do for the foreseeable future. Also KNOX. I actually do care about tripping it. The email app my company uses breaks if KNOX is tripped....
