About those scratches. - T-Mobile Note 7 Guides, News, & Discussion

My girlfriend is notorious for scratching and breaking her phones. She has had her Note 7 for 1 week now and the phone is totally naked. She throws her phones into her purse and they ping pong around bouncing off various plastic and metal objects while shes on the move. I warned her over and over that this glass is softer and scratches easier, she didn't listen. Today her phone was sitting face down on the tile counter top covered in greasy, lotion smudges. She hasn't even removed the IMEI sticker from the back of the phone yet. It looks like ****. So I took it and spent 3 minutes wiping it down to take a really close look at it under our dining room table light. I cleaned it to perfection and put it under the light. Can you guess what I found?
Not a single mark or scratch. I don't know if she has been lucky or if the scratches have been hyped up somewhat. I have a Note 7 on the way and plan to put it through some real world use, not the Mohs scale.

If it helps you i have thrown my phone pretty hard and it is perfectly fine. I was testing the forces on it. As well there is a video were a user dropped it from 100FT in the air and it was enclosed in ice and it was perfectly fine. You have no worries G glass 5 is pretty dam strong , Other users will have their thoughts i am giving my 1st hand experiences.
PS I put my phone in my pocket with my keys for most of the day a week ago and it had no scratches i could see... I use and abuse my phones for durability

Wow a day riding around with keys lol Can you please find the nearest light and look closely for any scratching? I was thinking that maybe my girl got lucky and her phone missed the keys every time, but if you had it in a small pocket with nothing but keys, well that right there is scientific evidence my friend lol

I left mine with my keys also and have not scratches. I even check under bright lights.

I left mine in a bucket filled with bricks....What do you know? Not one scratch! I love this phone.

lmao

Funny i babied mine for a week, i have a fine scratch on my screen and smaller ones on the back near the bottom curve from dust/sand that got in the case.
These testimonials are great but Gorilla Glass hasn't broken balance of hardness to toughness so the more shatter resistant they claim to be, its very likely the easier they will become to scratch as hardness drops.
Some of you just arent looking hard enough and micro scratches add up over time.

Sand will scratch diamond lol No but sand is some scary stuff. I've seen so many friends get grime in between their phone and case and they pull it out months later only to find their phone is destroyed. No cases for me.

I read an article where the author gave Corning a chance to rebut the whole scratch video and what the essentially said was that it wasn't the glass scratching but the softer substrate being left on the glass. Also was stated that all glass has a hardness rating of at least 5. I'll see if i can find the article and link to it

I keep my case and take a risk, maybe get that spray on stuff for the back. Fine scratches from a case is better than a shattered back or from no case IMO

I've have 14 quadrillion phones and have only broken one so I just keep insurance for that super rare occurrence. I do have a huge problem with phones falling out of basketball shorts when I'm sitting but that only chunks the housing. Damn basketball shorts....

I did nothing on my screen for the first few days. Put the phone in a pocket on its own. Clean pockets. No sand or anything. I have two scratches so far on the front screen. FML. They are fairly surface. But there. I now have been on the hunt for a decent screen shield as a result.

My friend on my plan was taking a photo while hiking and dropped it onto dirt and grass and the screen shattered. It's all about how it's dropped I guess

I will say that I've been rocking mine without a screen protector for a week and I have no scratches. However, on my first Note 7 (returned it because of
) I got two small very thin scratches on the screen within having it for 3 hours... I had only put it in my clean pockets for like 10 minutes, I pulled out lint and vacuumed my pockets since it was day one and the video had just come out showing how easy it was to scratch.

I dropped mine face down and it didn't scratch or ding. I was expecting a broken screen lol. I got lucky

Has anyone managed to scratch the screen?

Hi, I recently got a Desire Z and I am trying to determine if a screen protector is necessary. I've already seen a thread arguing the issue in more general terms, but my question is simple:
Has anyone here scratched their screen from normal use?
I have a 2 yr old BB Storm and the screen is still flawless without ever being protected. I just want to know if I can expect the same of the HTC.
Thanks.
Cell phone screens are definitely stonger than you would think but it wouldn't hurt to put one on right? You know, as long as you don't keep it in a pocket with coins or keys in it. I haven't scratched mine in the time I had it without the screen protector but I feel much better with it on.

Dont't know.
The 1st thing i did was buy a screen protector don't want 2 take any chances. Please feel free 2 test your screen though & b sure 2 let us know how that works out 4 ya.

How about a real test. Let the knife fall point first about three feet onto the screen. This way it can simulate a fall. Lets see if the glass doesn't chip. My HD2 that the same "indestructible" glass. It chipped, not cracked, the first time it feel face down on the ground. Don't take a chance, slap a screen protector on it.
I agree I also had a hd2 and was able to put some scratches on that beast. I haven't put a screen protector on the g2 its been in and out of my pocket for about a week still flawless

I managed to scratch my g2 inside the first 2 weeks. Not sure how, probably something I had in my pocket.
In contrast, I went about a year with the N1 without scratching it. I am not sure if it is mere chance or if the G2 has a less scratch resistant screen but that is my experience to date.
i never put a screen protector.
no scratches what so ever.
but of course i take care that there is nothing in my pocket together with the phone
First time I got the G2 I slapped on the Tmobiles special screen protector.
The feel is different, smoother, and you won't tell if you have it on.
The screen feels sooo...like wow smooth.
Promise you,go check it out comes with 2 inside.
Its worth it.

There is a definite scratch in the middle of my screen, deep enough that you can catch your fingernail in it. The nice thing is that it's not noticeable when the phone is on.

I had the same type of scratch, deep enough that you could catch your fingernail in it, but it was higher up on the screen. I exchanged that G2 though when it stopped reading SD cards. I actually ended up fixing it before I sent it back because root came out and I was able to flash a new rom over it lulz.

Just get a screen protector from stealthguards.com
Their screen protectors are like anti-finger oil or something like that, cause when I swipe my phone with greasy french fry fingers, I barely see the streaks of grease on the phone.
And it's for free, with 2.95 shipping.
Took about a week to ship to me, and i'm up in Canada, EH.
My wife and I both have had G1s since preorder, neither with screen protectors, mine in my pocket (usually with nothing else) and hers in her purse with god knows what, and neither of them is scratched at all.
Says something for HTC's choice there, but I don't know that it's the same glass.
I haven't had a screen protector on my G2 since I bought it almost a month ago and I keep it on my pocket. Screen is still perfect.
Didn't have a screen protector on my N1 either and there weren't any additional scratches from when I bought it (had one small scratch from previous owner).
I have not managed to scratch my screen and my phone has met mr. hardwood floor once.
It's easy to prevent scratches/chips. Don't drop it, don't put it a pocket with other stuff, keep it away from kids/dogs/cats/parents/gfs/police/etc, don't lay it face down and don't go all high school girl and pitch your phone at a wall when someone makes you angry.
There go, AbsolutZero's guide to a scratch free phone lol.

just ordered one myself, couldn't believe this was free
I'm surprised my screen hasn't gotten scratched yet! I dropped it on a concrete patio with bits of broken vehicle glass on it, I was replacing a window and got carless and knocked the phone off the seat with the door card as I was putting it back together. Also dropped it at work, which is a big retail store.
What has gotten scratched and damaged however is the battery door. That I find to be a bit annoying, now it looks ugly.

It technically isn't.
They make a profit from "shipping".
I got mine in a normal everyday envelope.
Cost them lets say a dollar to ship it up to Canada.
They spent about 70 cents to make the protectors.
Their profit is about $1.20.

G4 screen is the worst screen ever

for all the G4 owner...better use a case or handle your G4 nicely..dont ever let it drop...1 single drop is all it take to cracked your screen
Gorilla Glass 3 is what the G4 uses. I have the S5 and it also has the GG3. I have dropped my phone multiple times and thrown it (with case) and it has not cracked. You either got a cheap overseas phone or faulty GG. This is why you use cases..
i guess you were unlucky. I dropped mine a couple of times on the corner, damaged the corner but never cracked the screen. Didn't have a case on the leather back. But now i prefer a nice thin case (spigen) which protects everything the way it should has a good grip and i added a reinforced tempered glass. So i am secured ... for the moment.

Dude, it depends from multiple factors... The way the phone falls, the way he knocks on the ground, the forcestrike ... Sometimes just happens on a certain fall by certains elements that the impact factors made him crack, it could happen to any phone. Doesn't mean he's bad and just breaks right after the first fall. And btw, using a case is always advised in a high end phone unless you're rich and you don't care about buying another one or repair it.

How do you know his phone wasn't a girl? lol
you have all our sympathy, you must be devastated, I know I would be.
it's really down to luck when you drop a phone, sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't, it's happened to me with other phones and I've ended up spending a fortune getting them repaired because I cant live with a defect on something I use so much.
I'd love to see a manufacturer make the gorilla glass user replaceable, just like a screen protector. I personally always add a toughened glass screen protector and i'm sure a lot of people do, so all the effort phone makers go to to make their phones the slimmest and sleekest are in vain, as we then have to cover them up, because essentially they are a really expensive and fragile piece of equipment that's not easily repaired !
The glass is the same glass used on 99% of other smartphones. Just bad luck. The way it fell, the angle it hit the ground.

I swear people must have butter in their hands, I've had my Nexus 4 for 2.5 years, never dropped it, not one scratch on the front screen. If you care about your phone, look after it
That must be some kind of record though, exactly one week after launch and it's damaged, although I supposed the guy in the video who got the iPhone and dropped it while showing the news reporter it

The phone as a slight bend to it by design. does this mean the screen also has a bend or is it completely flat ?

Phone is garbage!11!1
Why?
I dropped it and it broke!
lol
But too be fair the G4 screen really isnt that impressive

Dropped it yet?

Like a lot of people I'm suddenly debating an edge but I'm worried about losing a rim of aluminum or plastic around the screen. I don't do cases and do drop my phone on concrete around twice a year but have never broken anything, am I right in guessing that edge screens lose a lot of durability without a case?
Dropped mine twice, both times onto my Kitchen floor (stone). Not even a scratch, much to my surprise.
Haven't found a case I like yet, and I'm insured, but will eventually get a flip cover I think.
drop it in the toliet 2 times on wooden floor, looks the same as before when i buy it.
That's sweet to hear, thanks!
Dropped my on kitchen floor yesterday thankfully not a mark on it !!
I've had mine for over 2 months, and it's in mint condition. You learn early on that the thing is a bit of a tank, but still manages to be well-manufactured with a premium feel. I've had a few drops thag were hard to look at, but a spray-adhesive screen protector and a flimsy TPU case bought online have protected the phone from any cracks or scratches.
i watched a drop test on youtube of this phone a while back vs an iphone, and although ymmv compared to the video, it did seem like the S6 was pretty tough, it took dropping the phone from around 10feet high before the glass smashed on back or front! I was very impressed.
I want to also highlight how I've gone without a case for the few months I've had this phone, and there isn't one scratch to be seen! Yes it is a fingerprint magnet, but I seriously thought that the back of the phone would look awful pretty quickly, but it's just pristine!
Dropped mine again in the kitchen again no damage thankfully.

Without a good case; this thing is so painful to hands, i mean sharp rear lines. After a long surfing on the hand, it is giving cramp. [emoji51]
And sending an another post. Why?
Because I can..
Yes I dropped mine onto a beer can on the floor which still had some beer in it, this made sure the can did not move. The result of the 3ft fall? the pixels at the impact point are completely knackered, so will need to claim on the insurance when it comes to selling it for the Note 6, as I imagine the phone is probably a write off as it is the screen as well as the glass. Not sure I think much of this Gorilla Glass!
I owned the xperia z and z3 and never managed to crack these once. On the three occasions I dropped my s6e+ it resulted in damage. Why buy an expensive beautiful glass phone to put it in a plastic case?
yep yesterday camera len broken. looks like a right pain to do and looks like camera its self looks damaged too.

Back has scratch or crack from just pocket.

I read about the whole no mrtal in pocket as it can damage your phone. But my pockets are empty and notice on the back on the ce016 number there a scratch or hairline crack. I'm always super careful with my phones. And usually get a otterbox case. However since there isnt a case for it yet, referring to defender series i been rocking it solo. If i were to put my nail on the area and rub run it over I can feel it. Anyone else had this issue? If i were to guess maybe half a inch kind of curve.

Good news is that you'll be getting a new one soon. I would buy a clear protector for the back (and front maybe).
I set my phone face down on a table and now there is a tiny scratch near the front camera. Nothing major, but noticeable. I already ordered a dront and rear clear protector combo for when I do the recall exchange.

My day old Note5 fell from 2 feet and landed half on grass, half on the patio. The top back corner hit the patio. It spider webbed the top 1/3 of the phone. The Note 4 was plastic. Any glass phone is going to be fragile. The good news was Samsung replaced the back for $75 including shipping out of warranty.

Fine scratches

Anyone else have very faint surface scratches on the back of their phone? No idea how I got them on this supposedly sturdy phone, but they are there. The phone has been on microfiber resting at all times.
My question is this, anyone think we can polish the back to get light scratches out?

I have this same thing going on, day 3 with the device. They're not that noticable but I know they're there and that's what bugs me. Somewhere I read said it could be scratches in oleophobic coating... IDK. JerryRigEverythings scratch test didn't show any markings until around 8 on the hardness scale.

I have this same thing going on, day 3 with the device. They're not that noticable but I know they're there and that's what bugs me. Somewhere I read said it could be scratches in oleophobic coating... IDK. JerryRigEverythings scratch test didn't show any markings until around 8 on the hardness scale.

Yea I saw the video. That's what has me annoyed. Essentials talk of durability is well documented. Add that to the fact that no cases are readily available means you kinda need to just put up with whatever happens. I'm wondering if we can just use a mild polish on the back to alleviate any minor scratches. Mine are almost invisible, but I their presence at all on a phone I baby, bothers me.
I think baking soda and water would do the trick.

I began to see fine scratches on the back of mine within days. I carry it in my front pocket with nothing else. I'm not aware of any rough treatment at all. I feel disappointed as well.
Same problem here ,another thing to be disappointed besides the Camera.
Same here
I was getting some as well. Try the polish out and see if it works? I don't think anyones tried it yet. Also if you don't mind covering the back you can always throw a skin on it. Also makes the phone a lot less slippery
I had quite a few on my first unit. My replacement unit I have none so far but I put a dbrand skin on it the minute I took it out of the box. My first one also had some scratches in the titanium near the charging port and a nick on the side that came from who knows what.

Interesting. Have you complained to customer support about scratches? I wonder what their take is.

I also have fine scratches on the back of mine, with scratches near the USB c port. I also have a replacement supposedly on the way, but for freezing & random reboot issues. What did they replace your phone for? How long did it take for you to get the replacement?
Mine was for bad light bleed and the coating on the titanium coming off. Now I have to exchange again because the one they sent me has no speaker grille.
They sent the replacement next day air after they called to confirm. I had already sent my defective device in. This was before they started doing advanced replacement.
I wish you hadn't said anything.. I have them too
Maybe they could be polished out, but if it scratches this easily they are destined to return.
The phone is not supposed to be scratch proof. I'll be surprised if they'll take your phone back just because of slight scratched. Put it in a sleeve to install vinyl backing for peace of mind.
Mine had scratches from day one... lol Just placed my replacement order yesterday but I don't expect to get it anytime soon. Phone is off and collecting dust til I get the box to return it. They stated they wouldn't have any new devices (hopefully ones w/o much of the hardware issues like the speaker grille) in stock until this week when they emailed me last week.
I ended up getting a replacement from essential and placing a skin on the back to protect from getting these fine scratches. I don't hate it as much as I thought I would, I miss the shiny back but I like not having scratches and finger prints all over the back. Wahoo!

Had mine for over six weeks, and no scratches here.
I have a ton of scratches near the camera and magnet ports. No idea how they got there since I carry my phone in my pocket with nothing else in it. The only thing I could think of would be resting it on it's back on a table and sliding it to pick it up? Odd how it is only around the top part. Fingerprint sensor and below is spotless.

Close to that area are the magnets, magnets attract metal and sand, sand is one of the few things that can scratch glass and ceramic. Sometimes even if we believe or not we have sand in our packets due to daily life. Then we have scratches without knowing where we scratched.

I don't understand people complaining about micro scratches like it's something wrong with the phone? If you live in a place that has sand then you should have some type of protection on your device if you don't want scratches. Sand (silica) is harder than any coating and will scratch any phone. It also can become ubiquitous. One of the persons here literally has a user pic with them on the beach! Why make it Essentials fault when your failure to protect your phone is the issue?
I got my scratches at my corporate office in my cube. Nowhere near beach or anything of that sort. Was just playing with it and setting it up. Anyone who's not using any protection on the back and have been using it regularly saying they don't have any scratches, please share a close up video of your phone's back in nice HD detail close up so we can be in awe of your magical device with no scratches. Be sure to move it around under a bright light too. Lol. Be real people, you're gonna get scratches without a protection, whether it's a skin, case or whatever.
