[Guide] Samsung Galaxy J700P root w/ TWRP - Samsung Galaxy J7 Guides, News, & Discussion

Phh's SuperUser: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software-hacking/wip-selinux-capable-superuser-t3216394
Odin: http://odindownload.com/ (DOWNLOAD 3.0.9)
After you download TWRP, install Odin. Then follow the steps below.
1. Launch Odin
2. Put your J7 into download mode (hold volDown + power + home during boot)
3. Using your charger cord, plug your J7 into your PC while it's in download mode; make sure Odin is open.
4. In Odin, press the 'AP' button, and select the TWRP .tar you downloaded. (DO NOT CHANGE ANY OTHER SETTINGS.)
5. Verify that the checkbox by 'AP' is selected, then click the 'Start' button.
6. Once that's finished, your phone will reboot. Press volUp + power + home before you see the boot screen to verify that TWRP is installed. Reboot to system afterward.
7. On your J7, go to the SuperUser download link, and download it.
8. Once phh's SuperUser is downloaded, reboot and get into TWRP. (Press volUp + power + home before you see the boot screen)
9. When you get into TWRP, press the 'Install' button. Go to the directory where you downloaded the SuperUser .img, and select it.
10. Once you select it, it will ask you to swipe to install it. Go ahead and do that, and phh's SuperUser should be installed. (be sure to go to the play store and get his app to actually complete installation.)
11. When you reboot, you should be rooted!
Thanks to @CoffeeNAndroid for pointing out this method of rooting.

Thanks for the guide. I find that no matter if you flash cf auto root or twrp to root youre going to have to reflash that stock recovery... it makes since to root with twrp cause you can flash all the zips you want and backup youre rom all in one trip before you reflash the stock recovery... i can understand some people are like well i want a permanent twrp recovery without having to have to keep using odin to flash the twrp and stock recovery but this is what is available right now at this time...

Can you post the stock recovery.img for me please j700p.

just made one that works... swap back and forth to fix issues from time to time
We need to fix the TWRP issue

thank you.
orginally rooted with cf-autoroot which rooted it fine, but caused a boot loop. so i followed your guide, and voila, installed twrp and supersu, zero issues. thanks brother.

Rogers is the only carrier who pushed this update, it was pulled shortly after, due to corruption. I had to spend literally ALL day downloading this. I downloaded it 7 times before i got a OTA zip that passes a CRC check and extracted properly. What a pain in the butt it is i had to convert my Telus device to Rogers fully down to modding the EFS to get this done.
Prerequisit: You must be on a 5.1.1 compatible TWRP as well as a 5.1.1 rom when flashing these packages or your going to get stuck in a binary miss match. While there is a fix for this with out the W8 5.1.1 odin packages, it takes a lot of musical flashing. So be sure to be on a compatible 5.1.1 rom, Kernel and TWRP first.
As always, you flash at YOUR OWN RISK. I will of course try to provide support if I am online, If you appreciate how much the pain in my butt was, and you didn't have to do this your self. Click Donate.
The Bootloader MUST be flashed via ODIN 3.10.X or higher. in the BL slot. Hence why its a tar. Sorry no flashables, Samsung locks the boot loader areas to everything but their own signed recovery, from their own signed update.zip

You can get ODIN 3.10.6 HERE

Fingerprint confirmed working by my self. on custom 5.1.1 roms and stock.

Yes i flashed it via BL. Whats your actual device.
Worked perfectly for me. So glad to have a working fingerprint scanner on a 5.1.1 custom rom. Thanks

Easiest way to do it is just make sure the Bootloader is loaded on Odin first on your PC then reboot to recovery and flash the modem package, select reboot and choose Download so it reboots to download mode, plug the phone to usb and flash in Odin and you're done!

that's not for the edge... you could brick your device flashing a non-edge bootloader to an edge one.

This is why, odin is protecting you from your mistake. This is a G920W8 boot loader. It would brick your device if you convinced it to flash some how.
I do not have a G925W8 so i was un able to play musical CSC and FLash to get that OTA before rogers pulled it.
Just as a note guys, the fact that rogers pulled this update. expect all of the Canadian carrier updates to be delayed for weeks now.

Thanks Mr. X....Confirmation number: 14Y69764AE724154S a little appreciation of your time. Can I re root and then flash this on my Bell device over 5.0.2? Or should I wait till I get the Bell`s 5.1.1. It has been awhile since I had a Sammy phone. I had a whale of time to get back to stock using Smart Switch and Odin always failed for me. Just want to be able to flash 5.1.1 roms with most stuff working. Thanks again!! My device is the SM-G920W8 Bell S6.

As this is a 5.1.1 boot loader it will require you to be on a 5.1.1 rom. good news is there are many roms to choose from that all work perfect due to my audio patches, and now this boot loader
I would flash TWRP on your 5.0.2 device as it sits, then i would choose your 5.1.1 rom of your liking. Put it all on your storage on the phone except the bootloader tar. Flash the rom, modem and what ever else in TWRP. then in the TWRP reboot options reboot directly to download/bootloader. and odin the bootloader. boot the device normally and you're good!
I do have the rogers ota update zip but i hesitate to distribute it since they pulled it due to bugs, and is uspect corruption ans i had to re-download it several times before it wasn't corrupt from their ota server.
PS: Thanks for the donation!
I am personally running this http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...xtrestolite-deodexed-mod-edition-1-3-t3119968, with the new boot loader and modem. it runs beautifully.
Any international rom with a kernel for our device and my audio patch will work. the rom i link packs it all up in a bow for you no extra work. finger print will also work since this boot loader

Perfect, I was on that rom for awhile with 5.0.2 and some stuff missing..So the best plan is
1. Re Root and Flash TWRP
2. Back up
3. Flash 5.1.1 Rom
4. Flash Bootloader with Odin
5. Flash Modem with TWRP
And then I should be good to go? Where does the Audio patch come in?
Any other suggestions or order to my plan?
Thanks again for your time and hard work!!!

Is TWRP recovery working for sm-j700h 3G like sm-j700f 4G

Tried to install TWRP, messed up bootloader - Not sure what to do next

I pulled out my old Verizon Galaxy S4 with the intention of getting a ROM on it that had XPosed. After some Googling, saw KingRoot supported it, so I used that app to root it. Then I tried to get TWRP installed. Their website said you could do it from their TWRP Manager app, so I tried that. It *said* it succeeded, but after that, my phone couldn't even boot at all.
So then I read up on using Odin to fix it. I tried to flash TWRP recovery from Odin (even finding a .tar version was a PITA), but I got this:
Code:
<ID:0/006> Removed!!
<ID:0/006> Added!!
<ID:0/006> Odin engine v(ID:3.1005)..
<ID:0/006> File analysis..

Now, it boots normally, but I can't get into Recovery any more.
All I really want to do is get some custom recovery on there. Or even back to normal at this point. But I don't know how. I also tried flashing Clockwork Mod, but that didn't improve anything. What should I be doing now? Go back to stock and start over? Or am I installing the wrong recoveries from Odin (the TWRP one wasn't on their official download page, they only have .img files there, not tars). Or what?
Your first mistake was that you used Kingoroot. CF-Autoroot should be supported on your S4. As to the recovery, you want the latest version of TWRP, here. Download the 3.0.2-0 tarball (.tar), open Odin, select the PDA slot and point Odin to the tarball, then flash. That should resolve your recovery woes.
Make sure your TWRP is for that phone model. Verizon phones have locked bootloaders which make modifications harder.
Since the OP installed Clockworkmod, I have to assume his bootloader is one of the ones that can be exploited. But a good point, and I edited the link in my last post accordingly.

That link doesn't have any tarballs. Only image files. I couldn't find the tars on their site at all, and the only one I could find was one someone had as an attachment in a thread. No clue if it's the right one, though.

I tried to install Clockwork Mod, but it didn't work. I got the fail message above when trying to install the tar via Odin, and when I tried to use their app, it did the same thing the TWRP Management app did - it said it succeeded, but now I can't boot into recovery.
Do not install Clockworkmod. It's no longer maintained and has problems with more current ROMs. Install TWRP using that tarball you found on the forums. I believe TWRP on Verizon has no tarballs as it's expected to be installed using the TWRP Manager or a similar app in the Play Store.
If this does not work, you may have to start from scratch. Hopefully you kept a copy of the ROM with the exploitable bootloader so you can reinstall if necessary.

Any way I can get the phone usable again? I really would like if anyone could assist in get it working again. It does not need to be rooted, it only needs to boot and function
Mine did same thing. I fixed mine by doing a factory reset from recovery mode. Reboot the phone and hold power+volume up+home key at same time until u see recovery mode in top left corner. It will say installing system update then go to a menu. Hit volume down till factory reset is highlighted. Hit the power button. After its complete go to wipe cache and wipe it also. Then click reboot system now and should now boot fine

I've had to do the same thing in a similar situation and it fixed it for me. Good fix!
Are you sure the stock version you are trying to flash is the same or newer than the version you had installed?

I think you have to Flash all 4 of the files, AP,BL, CP, CSC in Odin Latest version of stock is APK1
I flashed just this AP_G930AUCS4API2_CL8575098_QB10880146_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar in the AP section and my phone worked again. I don't know if that' might be bad thing or not though
I choose Phone Bootloader Update in Odin. It was the only thing that worked for me.

Samsung S8 bricked, odin not flashing stock firmware

Hello,
I'm trying to recover from a soft brick from flashing TWRP on my G950U, but odin isn't able to write stock firmware. Here's the log:

The firmware I'm trying to flash is G950USQS3CRE2_G950UOYN3CRE2_SPR.zip from sammobile.
I've downloaded the samsung USB drivers, my phone is in download mode, and I'm getting this error with different cables, ports and computers.
Any ideas on what I can try?
Check odin version..use latest version.

Is 3.13.1 not the latest version? I couldn't find anything beyond that, but there's also a version called Prince Comsy Odin, which also gave a similar error.

Thank you for the suggestion. When I try this, the "Security Error: This phone has been flashed with unauthorized software..." screen comes up after I restart, instead of the second download mode. Am I doing this wrong?
Also, I've been holding down volume UP + bixby + power while flashing, or else odin is failing at <ID:0/003> SetupConnection..
Some other stuff I tried:
Using heimdall on linux, but I get "ERROR: Failed to send handshake!" I'll try it again on another linux distro
Flashing different firmware versions, all for G950U sprint, flashing TWRP...
Using Samsung Smart Switch and Kies v3 (both report unsupported device) and Kies v2 (it gets stuck on "connecting", until it eventually reports that the device is not responding)
Some other error messages I'm getting with odin, seemingly depending on what button combination I'm pressing and whether I unplug replug the usb before flashing:
<ID:0/008> Complete(Write) operation failed.
...
<ID:0/005> Can't open the serial(COM) port.
I think I'm running out of options. Does anyone have any more ideas?
Is that the latest firmware? Try restarting your PC and use the latest odin. I realised heimdall doesn't work so I used vmware to run windows with latest odin and last firmware file and it worked. I was using the exynos version though. I had downloaded the stock rom from xda but that won't flash and checked sammobile for latest firmware, that one worked fine !

I believe it's the latest firmware for sprint. I've restarted my PC, and odin's version is 3.13.1 (which I believe is the latest). I'm currently trying a different, earlier firmware just in case that works.
I literally had the same error, I don't quite remember what I did but it was a frustrating two days of trial and error when I got this phone two weeks back, afaik it was just a wrong firmware file so give that old firmware a try

Will do. Do you know if anyone other than Sammobile hosts them? They limit upload speed so it takes four hours between each attempt
edit: https://updato.com workds pretty well
