No Internet connection possible (Wifi or mobile) after the deinstallation of AdAway - OnePlus 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello XDA Assist Team,
A few days ago I installed AdAway (via F-Droid) to increase mobile surfing speed. Now I got the problem that while using Wifi, suddenly every app had a 10-15 seconds delay before actually starting to download/ starting to load the web page etc. Once "getting a firm grip" on the connection, the download speed was fine as usual (120 mbit/s). This problem did occur on every app while using wifi, but not while using mobile internet.
So I uninstalled AdAway. Now no application can access the internet. Regardless of wifi or mobile internet, no application managed to access the internet since the deinstallation.
The only host files in the /etc/host folder seems to be the localhost on "127.0.0.1" and another localhost with "::1" . At least that's what the Hosts Editor app said. I installed it via USB to check on the host file.
My system:
Oneplus Two, Oxygen OS 3 (Android 6.0.1), rooted
installed were AFWall+ and Xprivacy. I deactivated, then deinstalled them to make sure they won't interfere. The only other App I installed recently is Cerberus. Except for devouring my battery alive, it did not have any negative effects I could observe.
I tried searching the Unofficial AdAway Thread, but I was discouraged by the 600+ pages. I tried, but didn't didn't find anything useful. I posted my question there as well, but got no reply.
I don't have many skills regarding Android. I installed the OS, xposed framework etc. by closely following the instructions given here on XDA. I have a basic understanding on how to use all these applications but I don't know much about what happens behind the UI. I would really appreciate if you could help me out here and point me in the right direction, prefereably without having to nuke my OS. My last Nandroid backup is about 2 months old, unfortunately.
With kind regards,
Fennec
Edit: My progress:
1. I found a tutorial of how to find and delete the hosts file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2717261) . It was stated that android would rebuild the missing file on reboot. That was not the case. Now in /system/etc there is no "hosts" file and my Internet still does not work. Hope that helps. I tried googling to find an untouched hosts file that I could copy into the folder, was not lucky yet.
2. Found a hosts file here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/help/hosts-file-missing-to-t2276818 . Copied it into the folder. Did not work. Help.
Please help me out.

Solved!
Writing down the facts I realized that I haven't tried disabling cerberus yet. I don't know why uninstalling adaway triggered the internet problem but Cerberus seems to have been the cause. It ran for 2 weeks without problem. Now my internet is free again. Either the deinstallation triggered the problem or it was a very nasty coincidence, coinciding with cerberus making trouble. Or maybe cerberus didn't like the system files being tinkered with and decided to lock a potential remote attacker out.

Undeletable file

Hello anyone,
after powering up the device for the first time and doing all the first time stuff I did the mistake of happily downloading the advertised Ice Age film (for free in Germany). Later on I tested all kinds of things. For example I created an additional user which I deleted again. Now I need the Space the *#@% Video is sitting on. But the $?#@%¿ File won't let me delete itself. Here's what I tried so far:
- deleting the file in Google Play Movies
- deleting the file with ES file explorer in /sdcard/Android/Data/com.google.android.videos/files/Movies/...
- clearing the cache of the Google Video thing in the nexus 10 settings
- clearing the cache of the Google Video thing with Titanium Backup
- deactivating the App and repeating all the abovementioned steps
- uninstalling update of Google Play Movies and repeating all the abovementioned steps
- trying to change permissions of the files with ES file explorer and others to no avail
- I even tried to rm -r the file via adb shell (with and without su) under different paths (see above and another including shell)
- and most of all: I did not only search for a solution but actually pleaded Google and the XDA search and the lot but to no avail
- By the way - I would very much prefer not to wipe the Tablet
Does any of you pros have an Idea?
Edit1: Of course I tried several different ways of changing the properties of the file (-rw-rw-r--) to 666 or something but it won't let me

Have you tried to unpin it from the Google movies app? I had a few magazines that I unpinned yesterday and it appeared to delete them afterwards. I assume the other app works the same way.

I would root the device then use a su manager that supports multi-users and grab a file manager that utilizes root. Try to delete the file then. Don't know why a file would be protected unless another app is trying to access it maybe?
That's exactly what I suspect. I've pinned - downloaded - the movie before I added and deleted the additional User. Therefore somehow the main user got to be a different one albeit it seems to be the same. And this different user isn't allowed to delete the movie. And I don't know how to restore the original 'main' user without wiping the device. If I unpin the Video in the App the App claims to delete the Video but it isn't. As a SU manager I have Chainfires SuperSU. The only other I know of is ChainsDDs Superuser Elite. And this doesn't seem to have multi user support either. Please correct me if I'm wrong or if there's more SU managers. For root utilizing file managers I have said ES file explorer, Solid Explorer and even tried Root Explorer.
Do you by any chance know of a way to restore the original main user?

The implementation of multple users is annoying and I stopped using it.
Superuser 3.3 supports multiple users for root. Might give that a shot. From Craigacgomez post:
http://d-h.st/oOo
But at this point it might just be easier for a clean install of you current Rom or at least a good excuse to try out another Rom.

You're right of course. A fresh install is probably the best solution. Actually I'm starting to prepare for it. But it nags on me. Setting up everything from scratch (not sure whether TB will install the apps correctly with this multi-user thing) and as always forgetting something to backup and therefore loosing it.
But most of all - as long as I don't understand why this happened in the first place I don't know what will be best: Completely ignore the multi-user capabilities and hope for the best never to need it or as an initial step setting up a user and deleting it to be sure not to loose control over data owned by a 'first main user'.
Thank you for the 3.3 Superuser. I suspect I'm just too stupid but I didn't get it to run properly. In SuperSU I did a clean up for another SU manager and installed the Superuser.apk. Then tried to let it install the binaries without success. Hitting the 'Tap here to check...' just didn't do anything. It just said the binary was SuperSU 0.99. So I installed Superuser from Play and tried to get rid of SuperSU and then again installing Version 3.3 - didn't help. I even copied the binary myself which at least made Superuser see a 3.3 binary. Sadly it didn't really work with any app.
So far as a summary: If you plan to make use of the multi-user-functionality just don't do anything before setting up some users.

[Q] After fooling around with AdAway I have no internet connection

I was messing with AdAway to try to get it to work on a Stock Rooted ROM, and unfortunately, was never able to get that to work. So after trying to revert the hosts file, AdAway failed for whatever reason, and then I was stuck without internet. I can't browse the internet via Google Chrome, and I can't access the internet using the facebook application or any other application that relies on the internet.
I was wondering if someone could give me a default hosts file, or if someone could help me troubleshoot why I am unable to completely connect to the internet on 3G, 4G or WiFi.
I am not above resetting the device, but, I wanted to leave that as a last resort.

If you are, as you say rooted then just use a root explorer (I use RootExplorer, also can use ROMToolbox, ES Pro etc..) to delete the current hosts file; in here /etc/hosts and then reboot and it should be created anew.
Also check your date and time settings. If they are not synched many things will not work

[Q] AdAway-like ad block application for Windows

Hello guys
I'm looking for an AdAway-like application for Windows 10 x64, using the well-known "hosts" blocking method.
I know there are browser extensions doing the job, but I'm missing an application like AdAway where I can add my own hosts sources, apply custom black- and whitelists etc.
Does anyone have a solution for me?
Thanks in advance!
This thread can be closed, I created something on my own. See here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/win...ll-adblock-t3103598/post60616286#post60616286
This sounds pretty cool, the only thing that gives me pause is how would one go about uninstalling it, or is that even necessary?
Great idea will check thread out on laptop later
I recommend this, a multi-platform hosts tool called Hozz with a beautiful UI. Merging different hosts files from internet, easy backup, all the features you need is here.
Hi, will this triggers Anti-AdBlockers scripts?
I got the Android host after passing adaway and put in the windows host ran perilously

Jiayu S3 viruses?

Hello,
I am having through a major problem here. I am trying to figure how got into this and solve this problem.
I am new to android but generally and experienced user. Bought my Jiayu from vickmall pre-rooted about 4 months ago and realised that my phone if infected when random apps where installing themselves from time to time (once very two weeks eg.).
Generally I am installing Google apps only except Adway and a few other essential non google play apps.
Also I am careful with what I installed and most of apps ever download where legit (e.g facebook etc).
Thanks to SDMaid I found a virus SYSTEM app hidden from normal app explorer with the name "Pine" and package name org.slaughter.brilliant. The name itself got me very suspicious. I also noticed that "install from unknown sources" was automatically turned on each time I opening my Wifi or Data.
So I exported the apk and scanned through various online scanner giving me obviously that is harmful.
e.g anubis.iseclab org/?action=result&task_id=18ea3597ad6a61394e5335fefcbc86899&format=html
Un-installed it through SDMaid and then the nightmare came...
I am having numerous of app ads several times a day to the notifications bar or as a shortcut icons that go to google play. I see from time to time a toast says "Downloading" without having any visible result.
You realise that this is not as common as a rogue app can be, besides the fact I am acting like a paranoid at the moment ....
With SDMaid again through latest modified files I saw 3 files in the ES Explorer folder named "recomm" that had a list with all this spammy apps that I get notifications. I was quite upset and though that ES Explorer (quite known app I think) was packed with rogue apps!?. So I deleted it but nothing. Ads came again the other day.
I tried to see from what app came the ad notification "e.g Holo Launcer" by pressing the notification for a few secs. I saw that it came from trebuchet launcher...
I tried scanning my phone with avg, malwarebytes and kaspersky. I got something only with kaspersky the following file in a .kpsh folder (related to com.kpsh.sdk.KpshService of trebuchet?).
virustotal com/en/file/6871be33ba862c4594ffee60444f7cf296cb657e4f1384a27c1be6a5da0d7078/analysis/
Erased it but it seems to recreate itself again from time to time.
Also scanned trebuchet and settings app here and got these.
virustotal com/en/file/000f796f06f193f2e61eb007d374a06d3211ddb7e1facf3c386621e1f024b828/analysis/1442420388/
virustotal com/en/file/bbb2783fb9a2ad9aa94fc71d6b78179917e8669ec266cdd5758fd1e46f853bdf/analysis/1442420356/
I decided to erase the whole .kpsh folder to see if that solves the problem till now.
My mistake I believe is leaving "Unknown sources" on as it was by default and got to this mess without know what app did all this. I believe that I was going to get a warning before something got installed but unfortunately...no.
I don't know if this was prepacked or something or was totally my mistake somehow but I am slowly giving hope away.
Any suggestion would be very helpful.
Reflash the whole thing is my very very last option since I am not familiar with the process.
Thank you all for the time reading this.
Hi,
I've experienced exactly the same problem a couple of days ago. I used the Addons Detector-app to find out that the Trebuchet-app was responsible for the icon and message ads. Unfortunately it was part of the default apps and couldn't be deleted via the apps manager.
I first installed the Nova Launcher-app as a replacement for the Trebuchet Launcher 3
and activated it (Apps -> Start Page). Then I stopped the Trebuchet app, installed the Root Uninstaller-app, enabled the request of root access (Security Superuser), started the Root Uninstaller-app, chose System Apps and selected the Trebuchet Launcher-app. After pressing the delete button and confirming the root access the app was moved to the waste basket. That's it!
I found that "install from unknown sources" was several times enabled again without my action. AVG antivirus detected ap. "Education" and "Settings" ? as malware. I have frozen "Education" - it cant't uninstall, and after that unknown sources does not change it's status..
Find com.android.fallen if exists in system\app and delete it (use file explorer with root).

Same thing here but recently I got very tired and did "reflash the whole thing".
Ingredients were: Smart Phone Flash Tool, the right USB driver, a lot of RTFM and the latest 5.1.1 Beta (#4) from Jiayu Germany. Even though it is beta, I already prefer it over that bugged OS it came with.
Edit: Forgot to mention that I checked the beta #4 at virustotal, no probs!

Decided to flash to jiayu germany 5.1.1 beta 10. I managed to get the rom but the flashing tutorial I found is in german.
Do you have instructions of backup/reflash/recover or whatever in English please?

Use SP Flash Tool on your computer. If you come from KK (such as perhaps your stock ROM) and go to to LP (such as the Beta10 ROM) then it is important to choose 'firmware upgrade' in SP Flash Tool. That's because partition layout changed (LP has one extra partition, not sure what it is for). Once on LP you can choose 'download' to flash further LP upgrades. To backup/recover a ROM one typically uses a custom recovery (mostly TWRP on S3). Beta10 comes prepackaged with LP partition aware TWRP. Beta10 also has GApps, so there is no need to flash GApps on top of it.
Success

It's a bit hard to remember my odyssey though webspace back then but I bookmarked some stuff... but here is a pretty decent recipe: some link*
The SP Flash tool was fairly easy but to use get the drivers running was problem. Tried some things without success and got lucky with the same site: some other link**
Altogether:
1. Get SP Flash tool and the right USB driver and make it work (eg. ADB driver)
2. Get the ROM
3. Choose the ".scatter"-file in SP Flash tool and flash
It's some weeks now and I also vaguely remember that the phone had to be off (well, not really sure but you'll see).
! Don't forget to check any downloaded at least with virustotal - I did that back then but the DL-links might have changed.
!! Use it at your own risk! Some kittens might get killed, or even worse: your gets bricked.
* and ** Alas, my apologies, I am not allowed yet to post links but if you google for androidxda sp flash you should find it instantly or just let me know.
Okay, I'm probably a little late for this, but hopefully this will be somewhat helpful to other people having the same problem.
I myself have purchased a Jiayu S3 Advanced a few months back: while the price is hard to beat, it comes with that ROM that sometimes starts installing "random" apps on its own. At first it was bearable, but at some point it started downloading multiple apps every day.
After some analysis (pretty much looking for data usage by different apps) I figured that the problem was with the Trebuchet launcher (which was the only app in that list that I didn't recall using - and also, why would it need Internet access?).
So, what I've done was rather straightforward: install Google Now launcher (but any other launcher should do), uninstall that other launcher. Worked like a charm!
Also, I've heard a few people complaining about this sort of problem with Chinese smartphones: watch out and consider that next time you buy a new smartphone! I know I will

Lost internet afterwards instaling adaway/adblock

Hi, I wanted to block some ads both on my browser and within apps, since I was getting drained up of my data plan without me realizing it (can't say it's all about the ads).. but anyhow, I have both adaway and adblock+ apks hanging around which I installed on my ex s6 and installed without a hassle (I hadn't remember if they blocked ads within apps but I was to test it), so i went and installed both and it kept saying the server for retrieving the lists on adaway weren't found, so I thought it to be a problem with my data connection and waited to get back home and try on wifi (I didn't realized that I lost my internet access since then - had a busy day at work) and when I tried on wifi, I was able to download the list and then it ask me to reboot for changes to apply. After reboot it couldn't get access to download the list (it was set an update on start) so I uninstalled it.
Then I tried to configure adblock+ and I wasn't getting any connection either, so I uninstalled it too. Afterwards I realized I didn't have a connection at all (I could connect both to data and wifi but neither was passing through). So doing some research I realized both kept 'active' (the modified hosts file was still there) so I installed them both and disabled both, but I still had no internet). Then I disabled adaway again check on the hosts file content and saw there were too lines (localhost 127.0.0.1 and ::1 127.0.0.1) or the like. I restarted and had some whatsapp mesages come through but whenever I tried to access internet trough playstore, weather widget and so forth, I lost internet access again even por whatsapp. I kept trying to the other hosts files locations (those listed within the adaway app) to see if there was the problem but it said something about needing a create a link or so and I didn't accept and stayed on trying on the default one (data/system/hosts or so). Finally, after some more tries I couldn't get internet access but I'd got an error about samsungdevicesecutity service failed and went and freezed it on titanium and afterwards I had access to both whatsapp and playstore, so I went and uninstalled both adblock+ and adaway and rebooted so as to have a "clean start" (or so I thought) and I came up again without internet and haven't been able to reproduce what I had, no matter if I unfreeze the service, freeze it again, having it enabled and how many more times this service fails. Sorry about the long description, but I would believe that having a factory reset would solve this but since I didn't had the backup option enabled, I'm not sure if I would have to go through the process of installing / configuring everything again, so I wanted to make sure I could avoid the factory reset path.. anyone knows a way around this? Any help is appreciated.. thanks
I was freshly rooted with CF auto root (s7 edge international).
Best regards

I had crystal already installed and was using samsung's internet. But I was trying to block ads on apps and failed to do some research on more recent options like the ones you mention or adguard/netguard that I have seen being mentioned on other posts. Thanks for the suggestion and for the long reading..

Well, since I didn't had internet access I couldn't go through the factory reset path (I was asked my sam account to continue), but had to flash to stock first (doing this I recovered my internet access) but since it continued with the samsungdevicesecurity error I then proceeded with the factory reset (with the downside of having to reconfigure and reinstall everything). Thanks but I couldn't be that much time without internet access (work and all).
