[Q] AdAway-like ad block application for Windows - Windows 10, 8, 7, XP etc.

Hello guys
I'm looking for an AdAway-like application for Windows 10 x64, using the well-known "hosts" blocking method.
I know there are browser extensions doing the job, but I'm missing an application like AdAway where I can add my own hosts sources, apply custom black- and whitelists etc.
Does anyone have a solution for me?
Thanks in advance!

This thread can be closed, I created something on my own. See here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/win...ll-adblock-t3103598/post60616286#post60616286

This sounds pretty cool, the only thing that gives me pause is how would one go about uninstalling it, or is that even necessary?

Great idea will check thread out on laptop later

I recommend this, a multi-platform hosts tool called Hozz with a beautiful UI. Merging different hosts files from internet, easy backup, all the features you need is here.

Hi, will this triggers Anti-AdBlockers scripts?

I got the Android host after passing adaway and put in the windows host ran perilously

MIUI File Manager - working on other AOSP ROMs?

Hi people, i hope you understand what I'm trying to say here
If you ever tried MIUI i think you were amazed by the File Manager pre-installed on it. I simply love it and I think MIUI is very nice ROM but it has a few bugs and it's missing some things that AOSP ROMs (like GingerVillain that I'm currently using) have...
But other AOSP ROMs don't have such excellent File Manager that MIUI has.
I'd like to see MIUI FM installed on my Desire (running GingerVillain ATM) but I don't know how to install it...
I tried extracting FileManager.apk from XJs MIUI and installing it, but it doesn't install.
Then I copied FileManager.apk inside GingerVillain installation .zip and flashing it. FileManager is installed, but i get FCs when I try to run it...
So, can someone 'port' MIUIs FileManager to other AOSP ROMs?
Or at least explain why not...
Anyone? Anything?

Try using root explorer to place it in system/app.
Thank me if i helped!
It works with MIUI framework only. If you need a good file manager, Ghost Commander is awesome.

there is always Root Explorer
any updates on this one?
the advantage of MIUI file explorer is transferring files via wifi. And I need this.
I use Samba file share for WiFi file management. 'bout the same just that it's not as fancy. Works great though.
I've Looked at many options and posts about this and so far as i understand it's not possible unless you are running on MIUI already due to missing Lib that you can't get due to MIUI being closed source.
But there is good news i found an app called star high speed file explorer that is basicly a clone of the miui without the FTP option

ES explorer has rot? this option is experimental, but works fine for me.
If you like MIUI, why switch to another ROM?

I like ES File Explorer. I love it. The only problem is that it LAGS LIKE HELL when scrolling, at least on Sense ROMs (EVO 3D here).

Thank you for research . I was looking for a file explorer like Miui. This one is great !
I've moved from MIUI and miss the file manager.
In the reviews someone states this app sends text messages to international countries? The permissions for the app look dodgy too:
This application has access to the following:
Services that cost you money:
send SMS messages
Your messages:
read SMS or MMS
Network communication:
full Internet access
Your personal information:
read sensitive log data
Phone calls:
read phone state and identity
Storage:
modify/delete USB storage contents modify/delete SD card contents
System tools:
change network connectivity,
retrieve running applications,
mount and unmount filesystems,
make application always run,
prevent device from sleeping
Hide
Network communication:
view network state,
view Wi-Fi state
System tools:
kill background processes,
kill background processes,
force stop other applications,
automatically start at boot,
set wallpaper
Default:
delete applications
Any opinions?

[Q] add adds back to rom??

I know this is a strange request but how do I remove the ad blocking that's built in a ROM? I'm playing gravestompers and want to get free skulls in it but can't go to tapjoy to install crap because of the ad blocking so my question is? Is there a way to stop blocking once in a while and turn it back on after if the ad blocking comes with the ROM itself. what is needed to turn the function on and off??? Thanks in advance!
Most ad blocking is done by changing the hosts file so that the ad sites are listed as localhost. This means when they are attempting to go there, they don't.
So check for the hosts file on your device (/system/etc/hosts)
Remove the entries and you are no longer adblocking.

Update:Figured it out by using ROM toolbox to unblock ads works perfect and easy as piss thanks though!
Check the thread for the Rom unit are using.

No Internet connection possible (Wifi or mobile) after the deinstallation of AdAway

Hello XDA Assist Team,
A few days ago I installed AdAway (via F-Droid) to increase mobile surfing speed. Now I got the problem that while using Wifi, suddenly every app had a 10-15 seconds delay before actually starting to download/ starting to load the web page etc. Once "getting a firm grip" on the connection, the download speed was fine as usual (120 mbit/s). This problem did occur on every app while using wifi, but not while using mobile internet.
So I uninstalled AdAway. Now no application can access the internet. Regardless of wifi or mobile internet, no application managed to access the internet since the deinstallation.
The only host files in the /etc/host folder seems to be the localhost on "127.0.0.1" and another localhost with "::1" . At least that's what the Hosts Editor app said. I installed it via USB to check on the host file.
My system:
Oneplus Two, Oxygen OS 3 (Android 6.0.1), rooted
installed were AFWall+ and Xprivacy. I deactivated, then deinstalled them to make sure they won't interfere. The only other App I installed recently is Cerberus. Except for devouring my battery alive, it did not have any negative effects I could observe.
I tried searching the Unofficial AdAway Thread, but I was discouraged by the 600+ pages. I tried, but didn't didn't find anything useful. I posted my question there as well, but got no reply.
I don't have many skills regarding Android. I installed the OS, xposed framework etc. by closely following the instructions given here on XDA. I have a basic understanding on how to use all these applications but I don't know much about what happens behind the UI. I would really appreciate if you could help me out here and point me in the right direction, prefereably without having to nuke my OS. My last Nandroid backup is about 2 months old, unfortunately.
With kind regards,
Fennec
Edit: My progress:
1. I found a tutorial of how to find and delete the hosts file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2717261) . It was stated that android would rebuild the missing file on reboot. That was not the case. Now in /system/etc there is no "hosts" file and my Internet still does not work. Hope that helps. I tried googling to find an untouched hosts file that I could copy into the folder, was not lucky yet.
2. Found a hosts file here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/help/hosts-file-missing-to-t2276818 . Copied it into the folder. Did not work. Help.
Please help me out.
Solved!
Writing down the facts I realized that I haven't tried disabling cerberus yet. I don't know why uninstalling adaway triggered the internet problem but Cerberus seems to have been the cause. It ran for 2 weeks without problem. Now my internet is free again. Either the deinstallation triggered the problem or it was a very nasty coincidence, coinciding with cerberus making trouble. Or maybe cerberus didn't like the system files being tinkered with and decided to lock a potential remote attacker out.

NewsOn apk working on Fire KS 5.2.1.1

Hi I have NewsOn apk working on my AFTS but I can't get the application to work on a coworkers AFTS. Can I copy and paste files from my device to another so that NewsOn will work the same as on my device?
The problem is NewsOn requires Google services, which I somehow was able to install on my device but can't get it to install and run on my buddy's.
Thanks for any advice in advance.
In the tech world - dependancies are nothing that you just shrug off.
If the app needs the Google Services Framework, it needs the google services framework. And it will always ask for it - ad nausium, and probably quit if it doesnt find it.
On Android in general - an easy way to copy apps and its settings ("save data") from one device to another one is Titanium Backup.
You need root to use it - btw. That are other "cloud backup solutions" that don't require root per se, all of those arent very good. Without root you run into severe limitations with restoring app data. Because of the android security framework (one app isn't allowed to write data into another apps data folder).
But that doesn't help you one bit - if the app requires a Google framework thats on your device, but not on your "buddies".
Theres no magic that will solve that.

Thank you for your input.
It seems like there's always a catch or a road block to work around in the "Android World".
This problem I'm faced with, doesn't it seem like there has to be an achievable fix?
Im just not on that level to know exactly why or pin point what I did that gave me the ability
to use an app that from what I kind of understood isn't possible to install on a non rooted fire stick.
Isn't there a method I've must have unknowingly performed that enabled me to use NewsOn?
Or could it just be a glitch or fluke?
I haven't heard or found anything on the web indicating someone has installed an app on a non rooted fire stick that requires Google services in order to function.
What's your or anyone elses opinion on this?
Thank you for sharing.
I was able able to install and get working NewsOn on a Firestick Gen 2 without root. Installed NewsOn (Apps2fire) then dumped my Google Play and Play Services from my phone (apk manager +) and used apps2fire to install them on the Firestick too. BINGO! Unfortunately I can NOT get it working on Fire TV Box using the same method..

Host file issue trying to get Adfree working

I am trying to use Adfree on my OP5 and although the app reports success the host file in /system/etc doesn't change. The odd thing is if I start the app a second time it reports that the host file is already up to date so obviously it's editing something
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252747
You can try using dns66 or dns changer and point it to adguards dns servers or use something like blokada (which i am running) or block-this (looks to be dead though)
I'll look those up as an alternative. So far i can't find any documentation why host files won't work on Android 7.1.1
It's a know issue on Android latest version you need to flash add away system less host file in recovery. It's somewhere on XDA just do a search for something like add away not working in Android 7.

I don't know if this is relevant to you but I'm successfully using Adaway. I'm unlocked rooted (SuperSU) and have flashed TWRP recovery but Adaway has support systemless support in its settings.
