Why doesn't AT&T support android for wifi calling? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions & Answers

Seems only iPhones have the luxury? Is this going to change? Seems pretty ridiculous!

Excuse my ignorance but what are we talking about exactly?
Can't VoiP applications work in Android on any connection?

Not the same thing. WiFi calling is what every carrier is doing now. Essentially you can be in an area with zero coverage, but if you have wifi, you will be able to talk, text, and MMS just like you have full bars. You don't need any 3rd party or AT&T only application to do so.
https://www.att.com/shop/wireless/features/wifi-calling.html

This is why....... "We’re proud to offer Wi-Fi Calling on iPhone, the phone that’s absolutely beautiful and simple to use"
AT&T like so many companies / people are so far up Apple's behind that they expect the majority to believe that these features are only available on Apple, that Apple invented them and that Apple are the only way to use them. It's ridiculous.

Verizon, T-Mobile etc all have it working on Android and iPhone

AT&T like to still think they are exclusive to iPhone........... give it a few months they will roll it out to Android.

Seeing as they started supporting Wi-Fi calling way later than other companies I'll say it will rollout for Android in 2020.

Verizon was actually later than AT&T and support all new devices :\

This is the thing, that may cause me to go back to the iphone. I like the S7 Edge, but I really need wifi calling at my house. I don't get service too well. Too bad I'm outside my 14 day return. I may have to try selling phone on swappa with the samsung watch. I like the samsung watch over the apple watch too. Come on ATT roll out the wifi calling.

They only offer to iPhone because apple pays then a good amount of money to keep it like that so they can sell there cheap I phones first

Having wifi calling would make my life a lot easier as well, the service at my house is terrible. AT&T sent me a microcell about a year ago, which works perfectly, but I would happily ditch it if I could instead just use my phone for wifi calling.

And will keep doing so as long as people line up outside the Apple store for days before a new iPhone is released with an additional feature, available on other phones for several months, but because Apple now include that feature it is the greatest thing ever that Apple invented!!:laugh:

What will come first, Android ROM or WP7 port?

In your opinion, which one do you think will come to the HD2 and if you had to choose, which one would you get?
first will come people who should have gotten an iPhone asking when a dumbed down os will be available. giventhe choice, i stay with the ROM that came with the phone, that'swhy i got it in the first place
What I wish would come first is the time when people looking for Android on an HD2 realize that they should just suck it up and get an EVO. But, that's probably not going to happen any time soon.
Seriously, though, I think the WP7 port will come before Android.
port
With the extraordinary chefs of XDA my bet would be on WM7 getting to the HD2 first.
My 2 sense....
fhaines
Well seeing as a basically fully working WP7 was already ported and working on the HD2 I would say that one first.

Sprint's probably got better coverage than T-Mobile. I'm starting to regret switching over to T-Mobile from AT&T for the HD2. I should have spent the $800 to get the australian HD2 and stayed on AT&T. Now I've got a 2 year contract with T-Mobile.
Back on topic... I think WP7 will probably have a port first. I'd like to play around with both WP7 and Android on my phone, but I'll keep WM6.5 as my main OS. That's what I bought the phone for. It'll be awhile, if ever, until there's a stable port of either of them, anyways.

Sorry to hear that. Wondering why you didn't go with getting the HD2 from T-Mo without a contract. In the long run, it's cheaper and you aren't locked in. You didn't have to pay for the phone in full up front, either.
I did this, bought the phone for $449 and their Even More Plus with Text + Web. No 2 year contract and over the two years, I save almost $240 over getting the subsidized phone and a more expensive contract. If I had the need to switch to someone else, I'll sell the phone and move on.
Are you people serious? You should NEVER switch to a cell phone company for a freaking phone. Look at all the stupid idiotic iphone customers who switched to at&t to get one. How many of them hate at&t because of it. I will be honest, I have sold for S,V,A and now T, and quite honestly it really irritates me to see people treat the industry as a product industry. IT IS A SERVICE INDUSTRY PEOPLE! The products are just a secondary thought, or at least they should be. At&t really ruined it with that craptasatic iphone. I'm not saying it is a horrible phone, but it is not, nor is any phone worth switching to a company that you don't get service with or who has horrible customer service. I would like to see android ported over from the new Sprint phone that is being released so I can duel boot and get the best of both worlds, but F#[email protected] Sprint. I wouldn't have that companies service again if they paid me to.
I'm guessing WP7 will be the 1st port. I'd love to have Android b4 WP7 hits. But, its just wishful thinking I guess.

Sure, it's a service industry. But one that happens to have products that use the service. Until all of them make the same devices available across the board, the reality is some will have devices that others don't. And Sprint may be horrible to you, but there are plenty of users who would swear by it and say the same about T-Mo, AT&T, etc.
BTW, it's just a phone.

Nah, it's a product industry. If it were a service industry, everyone would be 4G and rising by now.
Yeah, it should be service-oriented, but everyone knows that these companies make money off their handsets, not their all-in-one plans.
Look at AT&T. They seriously offer a new product now (for only $99!) that connects to your home internet service and "boosts" the cellular signal.
Read that last one again. Yeah, they are offering you a new product because they know their signals suck indoors. And that product uses bandwith on your own internet connection. And they are charging you for it. So, AT&T knows they suck and instead of building their infrastructure, they are actually selling their "solution" to the very people who are already paying exhorbiant prices for crappy service.
Back on topic: WP7 will get ported first, but it won't be a full port. Android is coming, but it has a guaranteed 1 year wait and another 6 months for the bugs to be worked out.
Personally, I can't wait for Android. I ran it on my Kaiser, then my TouchPro2. It wasn't a full-time OS for me, but the app store was too juicy to pass up

Looks like Sprint cancelled the N1 as well...

Jesus, I already have my T-Mobile version and it doesn't hurt me but I really don't like Sprint (and Verizon) giving hopeful N1 customers the finger.
Its not that they just said no to subsidizing the phone... its that since they work off a CDMA network (non sim cards) they will just block the phone entirely off their network. Even if you had a Sprint compatible version and called them up to activate it they would tell you no. Greedy SOB's.
I wanted the N1 to become a smartphone standard across all 4 carriers so that Google would continue to produce it for a LONG time and come out with subsequent versions over time. But with just two carriers supporting it I am scared Google might abandon it long term due to low sales.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sprint-cans-nexus-one-in-favor-of-evo-4g/
Doesn't matter to you or me. We've got one of 2 current gen standard bearers (other being the Milestone/Droid) and ours doesn't have to go through a carrier to get OS updates.
All the apps will be built with us in mind, so fewer bugs and possibly more apps. We're basically Android Dev Phone 3. Nothing wrong with that at all. This is a loss for Sprint customers only, and the size of that loss is debatable.
Sucks to be a sprint customer. Will the EVO be better than the Nexus One? On paper, yes.. however that has yet to be seen. Most (or some) of us thought the N1 would be overshadowed by the Droid Incredible but that wasn't the case at all.
EVO vs Nexus One .... coming soon.
I wonder who's decision it was to cancel these phones...
Verizon, Sprint, Google, or HTC?

Good question. If it was Google, I think they bailed just before the vindication of the N1. I am reading about perceived "issues" with the Incredible and Desire similar to those on the N1 regarding 3g coverage. The N1 is a damn fine phone, and Verizon and Sprint users are missing out on an absolute gem with a better forward path than anything else in the hardware queue.

Its DEF Sprint's and Verizon's fault the phone was cancelled. Google could easily put in a different radio (like they did with the ATT version) but Sprint and Verizon can just refuse to activate the phone on their network like they did. ATT and TMo didn't have a choice since they use sim cards. Sprint and Verizon are evil companies that force their customers into more expensive options instead of giving them choices
Same reason the verizon deal fell through. both spring and verizon are very controlled networks. Googles wants to essentially turn the cell phone system into an europe-esque system where phones and service are seperate entities.
Each nexus phone has to be programs for verizon or sprint. They probably couldn't come to terms with an appropriate price and management. They'd have to have the phones programmed before being shipped out, one more step and one more cost.
Then you have the headaches of pushing out updates. We saw how long it took Droid to get the 2.1 update. If you want to update a sprint android phone you have to take it to a retail store to do it!
thats a damn shame
sprint cancelled (probably, i'm just guessing here) for the same reason verizon did. they have a top notch android phone coming out, for which they reap the benefits of sales. why would they chop that by catering to a phone that would only compete with their own sales, but they don't get sales money for? neither att nor tmo have a better phone right now.
btw, i love my nexus one. i can see why they would worry, lol. incredible is a nice phone, but the chick i'm hanging out with just got one, i played with it, and i prefer my N1, tbh

If Sprint or Verizon doesn't want to subsidize the N1 because they want to push their own phone that's fine. But blocking an unlocked N1 from using their network just for the sake of being ****'s and forcing people into more expensive options? That's just bullsh*t and shouldn't be tolerated
Just because customers getting screwed happens in American business doesn't make it acceptable...

I partially agree with the OP here, it would be nice to have this across all carriers, but in all honesty, CDMA is just not something that is well supported outside the US. Having GSM is key since it is more the worldwide standard. I don't think not having CDMA is going to really hurt things for this device.

That makes no sense at all. Even if they didn't subsidize the phone, like AT&T, someone could buy the N1 100% with their own money, and then throw their money at Verizon/Sprint for the voice and data plans. All I could see is a net PLUS of subscribers on their networks. Now if someone reallly wants an N1, they'd be thinking T-Mobile / AT&T; a net LOSS of subscribers for Verizon/Sprint.

Verizon and Sprint have a much much more closed network than Att or T-mobile. They wan't entire control of what goes on the network.
I don't think anyone would care because sprint customers would probably be waiting for EVO 4g..
personally, i really liked sprint. i had a heck of a plan with them, i got a lot of free upgrades without contract, and i always had a signal, no matter where i went. i did sometimes have to roam, but i had free roaming, so no big whoop.
i only switched over to tmo for the N1

iphone4 tv ad grrrrr!

Ok just seen the new iphone4 TV advert, woman in hospital having a scan of her new baby and husband is dressed like he is over in Iraq, they are using the new facetime thing, all very nice he is able to see the scan himself as she turns the camera around.........and its then I start thinking “what a load of crap” the advert carries on and at the end it says you need a wifi connection.
1st problem, she is in a hospital, every hospital I have been in the UK tell you to turn your mobile off as it can effect the machines.
2nd wifi? I understand how he can have it but how does she get it, not only would she not be able to use the phone I really cannot see the hospital giving her the wep key and letting her jump on to their secure line lol
So glad I never got an iphone....even their adverts piss me off lol
You might want to note that it advertises as "new" what's been in use in every goddamn smartphone with a front camera and WiFi since 2007. Even my old nokia 5800 could do that.
MANY phones could do this "facetime" via 3G network in denmark since.. since 05 i think? .
Yeah, but i'm focusing on the stuff in the advert.
3G Video call overseas isn't compatible with all networks.
But yeah, video calls started late 2003, i remember my legendary Sony Erricson Z1010
Yeah, the publicity about FaceTime does annoy me - it's not only a technology that's been around for years in a form which doesn't require WiFi or a particular model phone, but it's also a technology which has been singularly unpopular. I've never made or received a video call in the years I've had a compatible phone, and I've never seen or heard of anyone ever using their phone for that either. But suddenly it's the next big thing?
This isn't very related to the Galaxy S though.. isn't it one of the few Android phones that support 3G video calls?
utter crap, dont get me wrong I think the 1st iphone was great, got the ball rolling....but thats where it ends, every new rehash of a model they then brought out was still behind most phones out at the time and still are.....thats why this is sooooo funny even though I go for sgs myself
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL7yD-0pqZg
The Best thing that could happen is if a Dev build and App that supported thier FaceTime protocol and made it for android - over 3G network
The WIFI restriction should be easy to bypass with jailbreak. Don't be surprise to see facetime on Android, ipod, ipad, notebook, and desktop soon. The protocol has some very real advantages over what we have in the old phones.
I don't get upset to see innovations by any company whether I like that company or not. Competition is good and consumers benefit from it.
Just to offer a different perspective, and not to start a flame war.

Perhaps the message you received today is different from the one I got. The one I got didn't say I had to flash the update, it just implied as much by emphasizing what an "important" update this is. In any event, it's all a load of crap. The update is not required (it's your device; no one can make you flash a ROM that you don't want to install), and be advised that if you do flash it you won't be able to root. In fact, you'll lose root if you have it and you won't be able to get it back. AT&T can bite me.

Yeah, like everyone has said don't be fooled into this update.
A friend of mine went to att and bought an android, but they helpfully updated the device before giving it to him. He promptly asked for a virgin device and they did so.
They will sell you what you want... well mostly. Heh
"Do you mind if I turn up the AC?"
So, hypothetically, say I'm an idiot
and updated with ATT before reading this forum post about how I won't be able to root/mod. Any estimates on how long it will take before 2.2 is rooted for the Aria? I now realize a few of the very simple things HTC/ATT haven't changed that would have helped a lot in simple day to day stuff, like light sensor control (why do those damn buttons at the bottom have to be so bright at night), and removing ATT bloatware.

I never understood the frustration or hate over any provider honestly.
AT&T/HTC finally coming around with their 2.2, which is great for folks who don't want to do what a lot of us do to the phone.
For the rest of us, delete/ignore the message. Nobody is forcing you to take 2.2. Situation resolved.
ATT isn't the bane of wireless communications. Fact is, no single provider out there is the end-all be-all godsend for everyone, because it's a volatile industry and everyone's wants/perceptions/experiences are different.
Many smaller networks piggyback/lease frequency/bands/bandwidth from the same towers we're all on. As such you're not going to see hellish lag or vastly deposed quality. Their network priority levels -might- change a bit, but they're not taking over the bandwidth. They were already on the same highway with us, just in a different lane.
If it's like any buyout, the inducted customers will be offered a package to stick with their grandfathered plan (if it has benefits over the company's standard plans), and will probably also keep the same limitations as before.
Example, if TMO had no service or roaming service in City A but ATT has service there, they won't get the service because of the grandfathered plan unless they go with a full ATT plan. Even though the whole time the only difference was a network flag somewhere saying that this person's account isn't authorized to use the tower in that city.
That's really what a lot of it boils down to most of the time.
SimpleMobile might work for someone, VZN might work for another.. etc.
Customer Service is always going to vary no matter what, that's based on expectations/experience. If you like the outcome you love the service, if not they suck. So take that out of the equation. Most of the big boys have similar plans right now, and have been playing the technology game.
Until someone decides to suddenly get fruity with plan prices or has some epic technology gamepiece to play.. it's going to remain mostly the same across the board.
We're all simply dollars and cents. We're a number in a database which is then multiplied by how much they pull from us annually, so they can forecast their own income. We pissed someone off, boo hoo, we have a few million other customers.
I'm not PRO ATT either. I help friends find what works for them. I give them advice based on what their needs/wants are. I used to be Bell South, then it went Cingular, now it's AT&T--and I've kept my original plan from day one because it's better than what any other provider has right now. Last I checked, 2 years ago, I'm one of two people in the entire ATT network with that particular plan. It works for me.
Good hunting to everyone out there, and enjoy the technoloigy.
I have been a long term customer of att and have for the most part been happy. However, it is frustrating that they charge for every feature versus other carriers who give it for free or cheaper.
I think for the most part there are good reasons why people bash the company. Maybe they should switch carriers if it bothers them enough, I'm not sure. However, my minor compliants do not warrant a switch.
Btw, a phone is now more than a voice communication device and to put artificial restrictions in software in my mind is absurd.
I'm happy for you that you have a great plan, but as you know the curent plans are poor in comparison. People are allowed to complain. Let them.

Deleted message. It was also on the day that I read somewhere that AT&T is buying out T Mobile. Another bad sign...The less competitors to AT&T = Higher pricing, less stability, poorer customer service and pretty much an all around awful experience..
...coming right up!

I haven't compared their plans since summer, and at that point I'd compared their plans with VZN and Sprint, for someone else. At that time all 3 companies had the exact same plan offerings down to the feature and penny. Only difference was how each one billed data.
For this person, data wasn't an issue anyhow because they wanted a "regular" phone. So it came down to what phone they wanted, and they went VZN because ATT's regular phone selection blows whale chunks.
We didn't look at other smaller or competing providers because they didn't offer the same overall coverage as the big 3 did.
So what I'm saying is, I dunno what's out there now, but it seems the big 3 have similar plans as each other every time I look. Smaller competitors may have better options/plans/all-inclusive-stuff but again, you have to make sure it works for you.
And bear in mind one reason TMO scuttled the ship is because they were losing income fast.

Totally agree! "your mileage may vary", everyone's experience will be different. SprintPCS pissed me off years ago, one reason I was glad to drop them. They were undergoing heavy technical issues with their towers in our area, but because of how they had the phone programmed, even though it could roam digitally it didn't--they set it up to use their service only if we were near their signal.
Couldn't even dial 911 at one point, and I showed this to the techs. They tried with their phones.. same thing. The white-washed faces and lack of response said it all.
Prior to their working on the towers I dropped calls more frequently than I took steps walking. One time when I dropped my phone, the antenna broke off and part of the PCB was actually damaged--and it got a better signal.

Totally agree! They've got their reasons though. They're there to stay in business, we're here to make use of their service. It's a matter of keeping each-other happy.

I didn't mean to come off as a jerk and hope nobody took it as such. I'm a huge supporter of getting your complaints out there and letting people know how your experience went.
I just hate it when I see endless complaints and it seems like none of it is fruitful. If you complain, that's good! Just try and make it count. Do more than complain, explain your situation so others can make informed decisions about which carrier to go to. Things like "XYZ Carrier SUCKS they should burn to the ground!" doesn't help anyone.
Not saying anyone here has done that! I just saw a stream of "random hate for various reasons" starting to come out, like I do everywhere, and wanted to encourage folks to try and make it count. And to understand how things operate a little bit better.
Happy hacking everyone

Ah, then we definitely agree. Thanks for clarifying your point. I understand completely. Cheers!

Has anyone been caught / harassed by atnt for tethering or portable hotspot? I very rarely use these but have recently heard of them cracking down.

AT&T Disableing Phones

What's with all this talk about AT&T crippling the android experience..disabling peoples phones fro not running standard ROMS and all sorts of other horror stories. People who have been with AT&T for a while I would like to hear your opinions and about your experiences...I'm with T-Mobile now but will switch soon due to the buy out...not sure if I will go with AT&T or a diff provider..AT&T clearly has a very large network with great coverage
where are you hearing these stories? I've been running modded phones on AT&T for years now, and never had an issue. you will only have issues if you are blatantly circumventing them, and using services you aren't paying for. example, tethering on a non tethering plan and sucking down several gigs worth of data a month through it. They can tell you are doing it, and are becoming much less lenient about it.
have been on att with modded phones for years just like cegna09 said. i dont know where you are hearing this but its definitely not true
me 3, rumor/lies whatever you want to call it.
What I believe he is talking about is the fact that ATT has chosen to cripple phones other than the iphone; i.e. HSUPA

This is probably what the OP is referring to... from mydroidworld post by P3droid.. interesting read.. and you'll probably understand why this question was asked..
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...otloaders-rooting-manufacturers-carriers.html
I've been with AT&T since circa Cingular HTC 8525, and had that phone, the original Tilt Kaiser and Tilt 2 Rhodium all with modified roms and I never had that problem. Just got tired of all the mods and Atrix is just sooo good out of the box so I havent modded it yet.
fear mongering
Well I guess it is between the AT&T LG Thrill and HTC EVO 3D with Sprint. AT&T has a much larger network but who will give me the best Android experience and service???

if u read that long post from P3droid, you would see that he said not only At&t but other major carriers too, meaning Verizon and Sprint. But i'm not saying it will happen for sure, but if it does and i had to deal with any phone locked down, it would have to be the Atrix due to it's great performance straight out the box, and the update really increased the already amazing battery, so i'm pretty kool on this issue, not that i agree with it just not as pissed off as most.
Like i said in the other post, tethering is their problem not root in general
Yea... it's probably because a lot of people do exactly as others have stated.... they think that they can pull amounts of data that would basically be impossible to do from the phone itself, and expect AT&T to be none the wiser. I've thought about using the free tethering options available.... but then i realised something. When i'm on the go.... i HAVE unlimited internet access on my Atrix..... which when i'm on the go, i don't really need to download massive files. They can wait til i get home on my computer and download them that way.... over a broadband connection. Or if i just have to have that file.... it's much more logical to have a remote desktop connection and remotely download it on my desktop while i'm away than download it to a laptop or other device using a mobile carrier's network.
Do i see something like this going without consequence for AT&T and other carriers taking part? No. Last time i checked, as of July 2010, it is legal under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to root/jailbreak your android/apple device. Granted.... that doesn't necessarily mean that you are free to do what you will with said rooted device. I doubt any court would find it legal to root the device in order to circumvent and abuse a service provided by the carrier. But they would have to PROVE that you were using the phone as such. If they start blocking people's phones because they're rooted, they're going to have some serious lawsuits on their hands.
