Time to get a replacement phone - Droid Turbo 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well, over the weekend a vertical green line developed in my LCD. No damage or drops. Seems to be a faulty connection between the mainboard and the LCD. Luckily, I've have it less than 15 days. Verizon, here I come!

Mine did the vary same thing, got a replacement and added insurance to both my lines

My phone was 13 days old and no one could hear me on a phone call. I ordered mine thru Moto Maker, but I returned it to V and exchanged for a 32GB since we can add storage cards and I don't care about the design refresh.

I ordered my replacement a couple days ago for the same green line. Definitely seems like something came loose because II can press the phone at the bottom of the line and the line goes away.

Did Verizon or Motorola fulfill the replacement?

I ordered mine through motomaker and Motorola did the replacement. They sent me a new motomaker code and a return label

For all returning their phone because of screen separation

I have an HW 003 Novatech EVO built on May 19th.
Like many others I want to return my phone for a new one because of the light leakage and screen separation issues.
However, after reading a few posts and confirming my thesis, there is no point in returning your phone now as the replacement will more than likely have the same defects.
I spoke to a Sprint representative today and she recommended doing this: wait until HTC announces they have shipped newer HW models such as 004, or just a new batch with fixed screens.
Again, save yourself the trouble of unrooting, returning, rooting, etc...
Update: HTC has said they have partnered with several different vendors including Sony to make the screens for the new batch of EVOS. You can read an article about the EVO shortages on Buzzbox. I am not allowed to post the link here..
Hmm, I guess perhaps I should not plan on getting another Evo within the next few weeks. I'm reading a lot of bad stories about the Samsung Galaxy, I don't like the look of the Droid X and this iPhone 4 I just got has a small screen that just doesn't do it for me like the Evo's large screen. But I def do not want to get another Evo and have screen issues again. Oh what to do, what to do......
The replacement I received has no screen separation or like leakage issues. Maybe it takes awhile? my other one had it right off the bat.

My launch day Evo had leakage from day one but the screen wasn't rising until about week later. Now When I last cleaned the screen I could feel movement that I hadn't felt in the beginning. The big deal for me is that I don't want to use an Evo for many months and then the glue problem starts and then the device has the chance of becoming something I can't sell on ebay and would probably not want to give away to friends or family with a faulty screen. It would be nice if HTC could just open up and talk about it and explain how they've fixed the problem and how we have nothing to worry about down the road anymore then we would with another touchscreen phone.

Indeed this would be nice. However, HTC is notorious for not responding to the real issues even though they are aware of them.
As we know, not every EVO has these issues; furthermore, not every EVO has these issues right out of the box. My EVO had no problems until about a 2 weeks after use.
I would recommend playing it safe and just waiting for a newer batch from HTC and then exchange your phone.
We will all probably end up better off
These threads really are not helping my O.C.D.
Hope you guys get everything squared away with your phones. Sucks to hear that the problems can occur even a few weeks down the road
Thats why i'm glad I have an accidental damage warranty. My screen has no separation issues but if it ever does I have a feeling I might accidentally drop this one.
I as well am paying for the warranty, 7$ a month. There is still a 100$ deductible on the new phone.
I've heard screen separation a lot with the novs

I ordered online (sprint.com) launch day, and got a 002 with screen separation, called 2 weeks ago when sprint.com had some in stock, they made me verify the problem at a local sprint authorized reseller (nearest corporate store is 3hrs away) and by the time i got it verified and called Order Support back they were sold out, they sent me the return kit (i have to return it by August 1) yet its been almost 2 weeks since then and they havent had any in stock to ship me a replacement. Its a little ridiculous as i need to get the replacement through sprint.com, and they are never in stock. I'm terrified of just getting another broken one and having to go through this fiasco again.
If you have screen separation issues, try gently heating the edges of the screen with a hairdryer while pressing down.

Strange , I spoke with a sprint rep on Thursday, 7/8, for a exchange, received my return kit today and received email confirmation that the replacement was shipped as of Saturday 7/11. You may want to contact Jerry. 3 day turn around for replacement.
By the way, my return kit states: return original package, manuals, battery, sdhc card, and phone..... I have all of these, but come on original package and manual.
Phone 1 Bad Earpiece speaker
Phone 2 None functioning headphone jack
Phone 3 Screen kept shutting off, but still could recieve calls so it was not a lockup, bad screen maybe?
Phone 4. Ok so far except for light leakage at the bottom. Every one of my replacements had light leakage though, so i wouldnt be returning your phone at this point if light leakage is your only problem. Remember these phones have a 1 year warranty, so if the screen seperates you will get a new phone (refurb)
I dont think HTC as addressed the screen issue, its still very hit and miss with people getting phones that are perfect, and the ones who are, sounds like some are having the issues after a couple weeks use. My newest phone was built on 6-21, and when i got my newest replacement, my brother joined my plan with an evo and both phones had light leakage. My buddy works at sprint, and every employee there that has an evo has light leakage.
Getting a refurb too may be even better, because if they replace the screen, maybe the new screen will be installed properly with a new type of glue, but who knows.

My Sprint repair store replaced the screen... HTC is sending screens to key repair centers. I ended up fighting til I got a new phone though.

called them back today, had to escalate call 3x, got a order number should get new phone in 3-5 days, thanks.
I picked my EVO on launch day, it was a 002 with a nova screen. Exchanged it 29 daya later due to the light leak / screen separation problem. I got a 003 with an Epson screen and no problems in the last week and a half that I've had it.
Return was done at the Sprint store I purchased it from.

My Google I/O EVO has always had it. I am going to try the hair dryer trick, and if that doesn't work I will just wait for a new hardware revision.

It's easy as heck to fix, most all phones suffer from this it's just more noticeable on the EVO due to the lights but when you hear reports of dust under the screen etc on other phones its usually from the same thing. The adhesive doesn't have time to properly set during the initial huge runs of these phones so some of them will dry with the screen not secured as flat as possible. All you have to do is use a heat gun (blow dryer will work just takes longer) run it around the edges that are lifted long enough for the adhesive to melt then push the screen down flat and hold it long enough for the adhesive to set and you have a perfectly flat screen with no seperation.
It's a pretty common thing, I do this with every new phone I purchase and even with some laptops to make sure the screens are sealed properly to avoid problems down the road even if I don't see any problems initially. Better safe than sorry!
Hey guys I have had zero issues with mine. It’s a 003 Novatec screen....it’s too bad some of you have had so much trouble. I’m just curious since many of you have actually exchanged your phones. Can you just call and do an over the phone exchange?...When I had t-mobile this is what I always did. Sometimes for really stupid issues, but was always nice to get a scratch less replacement. They ship you a new one and you just ship it back? I also have the TEP plan but I would rather not pay 100 bucks if I do run into an issue since I think these should be warranty claims.

[Experience] Dust under screen, unlocked bootloader and repaired without issue.

Hey Everyone,
I just wanted to share my experience with sending my nexus one with an unlocked bootloader to HTC for cleaning.
Like a lot of nexus one owners, I started seeing dust under my screen after a few months (I always kept the phone in it's case while not in use). I called HTC and they sent me an email with a fedex delivery label. I sent the phone in on a Monday, and by the next day they had received it and posted a status that my phone was being diagnosed. A few hours later, the status changed to indicate it was being repaired. By Wednesday, they finished the repair and I received my cleaned phone on Thursday.
The best part: I had unlocked my bootloader and when I received the phone back the bootloader was relocked! This time, I gained root without unlocking the bootloader.
One issue however: My phone's IMEI is different that what it was when I sent it in. Not a huge problem, however some games I had no longer recognized my phone after I did a nandroid restore.
I hope this helps anyone who has a problem with dust under their screen and is reluctant to send it in for cleaning.
-a9
Interesting to hear that they cleaned it and returned the same phone. When I called them in may they said it will take two weeks and they will send me a refurb phone.
What was the process like? The Nexus I just bought form a dude from CL was kinda dinged up, which was okay, and the phone was perfect other than those few dings, I find out later(which he probably didn't care about but I do) was the back button isn't as sensitive as the other capacitive buttons and there's one spec of dust under the screen.
How do I start the process?
I had the same results a few months back, but I opted for a refurb instead of a repair. Told them I had dust under the screen, and the rep said, "OK, we have two options...repair or refurb." Not a single question asked.

Any deposit or hold on the account?
EDIT: Just checked the phone, It has definite dust under the screen near the top and bottom. I am a shoe-in for a refurb now.
Same exact story for me. I also had a few dings in the bottom shell of the phone, they replaced that as well. Which is awesome. I just know it's my phone because the IMEI is the same, as well as a small little scratch on the screen is still there.
Also shipped a Cliq in to Motorola to get the keyboard repaired. I shipped them both on a Tuesday, got the Nexus back on that Friday. Didn't get the Cliq back until the Friday after. That's ridiculous.
My serial number and wireless MAC are the same but the IMEI is different.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Grrr, I will have to wait almost a week and a half to do this, since that's when I will have the funds available for the process. . .I don't want to wait a week! Lol, I want to have this done by the end of the week.
@Tito You don't need "funds" to do the repair, just send them your phone and use another for awhile. I lucked out and upgraded to the Vibrant, and then got my Nexus One back the day I was returning the Vibrant. Since it sucks and all.. Haha.

Yes, they replaced my entire casing which had a few small scratches and one large ding on the bottom where I dropped it on the sidewalk. It's pretty wonderful.

Nexus One Dev handset
I have the exact same issue with dust under the screen but on the lower left of the screen. I have two things working against me ;
a) I'm not sure if the handset is in warranty as it was given to me by a Google Staff member as it's a Dev phone.
b) there are superficial scratch marks from my keys on the casing which an engineer my assume are impact marks from a drop which is not the case.
what are my chances of it being repaired for free?
I would expect it to be out of warranty buy now if it came from a Googler.
I sent mine back due to my screen was impossible to use, sent it back, they replaced just about all inside parts, mother board and much more, I had the phone back in 3 days working great. HTC has done everything to make my phone perfect. I would not hesitate to purchase any HTC product, they are the best IMO.
Thank You HTC
I called HTC UK my phone is still in warranty period until December 2011. She also said the screen would be replaced free of charge as it is manufacturers fault if I wanted any additional repairs i.e. casing etc that I would have to pay for that, however I can still avail of the UPS pick up service. Price Quotation of £30 for new casing.
£30? That's bloody good!
I've my N1 off with HTC UK at present getting repaired, it for some reason stopped letting any SIM card connected to any network.
Sent it off last Thursday (24th Feb) and still not got it back yet. HTC repair tracking is telling me the repair is done but no sign of the phone as yet.

[Q] How has Samsung handled your RMA request?

Has anyone bought a Nexus 10 from a place other than the Play store and had to RMA their device? I am curious as how Samsung's service is in terms of getting a replacement unit out to you. Getting a replacement unit from Google is pretty simple but is it as easy to get one from Samsung? Do they attempt to fix the device (for example, if you had light bleeding) or do they send you out a new unit?
Bad service.

I bought mine from walmart and thought my battery was bad. I called samsung and it was painful to say the least. They transferred me 5 times. Once they sent me to google cause they said they didn't handle nexus products. Google sent me back to them I picked the wifi only option and they told me again it was a google product I told him I just got transferred back by google. He sent me to the manager who again tried to tell me they didn't deal with nexus products. So I told them my problem and told them I felt the battery was bad. He finally just said okay I'll put in a ticket for you to send it to Texas (I believe he said, wasn't really listening as I felt I should have just got a new one). He said the process would take somewhere from 2-3 weeks. I said forget I'll just deal with the bad battery until I can buy one and replace it myself.
The shipping process with Samsung is much the same except that it takes multiple transfers on the phone to find someone that has a screen that can do an RMA ticket on the device. My problem is that in doing the work they don't really make sure they solved the problem you had. I had my screen replaced and they put a worse screen in with four corners of large light bleed and they even managed to scratch up the back of my device. I was upset to say the least and had to ship it back for them to fix their shoddy workmanship. On top of that... I sent mine back on the 16th and it didn't get opened until 2 days after arrival. As of a week ago it has been sitting on hold waiting for parts. So its been in Samsung's hands now for 2 weeks and no word on when they will get whatever parts they need in stock or ship it back. When you ship they pre pay a 2 day air ups label and send it back 2 day air as well. Hope to get it back reasonably soon as the device has been out of use now for over a month. First trip took about two weeks total. Second trip who knows.
BTW, I did buy mine from play but was tired of worse RMA replacements. Everything was perfect on mine other than a little dimming along the camera edge of the screen and a dead pixel.
Sent from my often RMA'd Nexus 4, So that I can use the one I'm using now when I get the 6th and hopefully final one.

Long delay for replacement devices

I'm sure its no surprise, but just wanted to post my experience as an FYI.
I filed an RMA on 12/2 (my screen has a small row of dead pixels)
I have yet to get any shipping info as to my replacement , even though their policy is within 4 biz days.
I've escalated my case several times, and all they tell me is, "We don't have any of these devices"
Strange that they didn't keep a few behind for defect replacements, oh well.
Why do they never make enough Nexus's on launch?
same issue. i waited over a week (9 days) b4 ot was overnighted via fedex

It would be helpful if you mentioned who you purchased from/RMA'ed with.
And you can thank people who frivilously exchange devices because there was dust in the box when they unsealed the box, or a fingerprint on the screen
I purchased and filed RMA though Motorola.
I would hope that Google Play support would be better, but who knows.

I would think that it would be better with Motorola, since they make the product and ship right from the factory. You could literally end up with a device that rolled off the assembly line within hours before.

Did Moto keep a pending charge on your cc that whole time? I filed an RMA with them yesterday because of a large strip of fading on my screen, and they pended a charge to my cc instantly but that was the last contact I had with them.
If you have pending charge then you did the advanced RMA. I did that the night of the 16th around 9, it shipped out today and will be here Monday. So it's only going to take 4 business days from when I placed RMA to receiving a replacement. Once they receive my device the hold of $557 will be off. I purchased mine directly from Motorola's website.
What version of the device you got may also affect the turn around. Mine was a 32GB CW
Also just FYI you technically won't be getting brand new devices. They are in Like New condition.
Just filed an RMA this evening with GPS. Expected to to leave warehouse on the 23rd with overnight shipping. We will see if it arrives on Christmas eve. Seemed easy enough with one quick call and a follow up e-mail. I'm assuming my pending charge will arrive once the device ships. Keep you updated when I receive tracking.
I didn't have a problem exchanging a blue 32gb nexus 6 under warranty with Google Play store. Received in two days after the phone call.

I did do an advanced RMA. I ordered from Moto and I bought a 64GB Blue. I was assured that my device would be brand new unopened, non refurbished.
The only reason I purchased from GPS is cause of the warranty and RMA...Google always sets aside units for RMA even my zen watch that showed OOS on play store that I rmaed got shipped a new replacement within a day.
Shattered my preoder N6 in Japan with an unfortunate drop. Assurian warranty services via ATT just replaced it in less than 24 hours. N6, 32gb, blue.
Well.. my camera started doing double exposures -either focus or optical stabilization is wonky, started getting bad around dec 18, and it has gotten worse since then. Clearly a hardware issue, after wiping/resetting- and some really funny pictures sent to Motorola. Their level 2 support was very reasonable, and I finally setup rma for advanced replacement on 30-dec.. and 7-jan I have not heard back yet. We'll see how long it takes. I'm hoping it is not too much longer.
I originally ordered a 32 gb Midnight blue direct from motorola on 12-Nov, received on 25-Nov, then RMAed with Motorola directly on 30-Dec.
We'll see how long it takes....
With Motorola selling a Moto X Pro that is basically the Nexus 6 I could see the replacements being delayed.

Nexus 6 Replacement by Motorola

Hello,
I just wanted to share my experience that I had with Motorola regarding replacement of my Nexus 6.
So, I have had my Nexus 6 for a little over a month. (Just long enough to not be able to return it) I have noticed screen "burn in" really bad where the navigation bar and status bar are located. So bad that I can see a "ghost" of my navigation and status bar icons when watching videos on YouTube. I tried to prevent it, keeping brightness down and display timeout on 30 seconds. Apparently I received a very poor quality display.
Anyways, I contacted Motorola about this and I wanted to share their return policy and procedures. Motorola will give you two options.
Option One: "Standard Replacement Service" They will email you a return shipping label. The label is standard FedEx Ground. You then use the label to return your defective Nexus 6 to them. Once they receive it, they will ship you a "Like New" device within 5 business days.
Option Two: "Premium Replacement Service" They will ship you a Brand New Nexus 6 via FedEx 2nd Day Air. Included in the package will be a return shipping label to return the defective Nexus 6. This option has a service charge of $24.99 AND they require you to provide them with a credit card, which they issue a security hold on in the amount of $500.00.
I originally went with option one yesterday, but then I decided against it and called back right away this morning to cancel the RMA and created a new RMA and went with option two. I really didn't want to go without my phone for two weeks.
I found out that the only thing not covered under warranty "repair" is liquid / extreme moisture. The Nexus 6 one year warranty covers repair / replacement of damaged devices! If your Nexus 6 is out of the one year warranty, a $175 fee is charged for malfunctioning or damage. (Still a good deal in my opinion)

Not all of your info is accurate. I've had a Nexus 6 I purchased through Sprint in April, and about two months ago I dropped it causing the screen to shatter. There was also a dent in the upper left corner and for reasons I couldn't figure out the micro USB port ceased to work.
Naturally, I checked out the repair service for Motorola and found that my phone was still within the one year limited warranty period. I sent my phone in with the bootloader unlocked, rooted, running XtraSmooth MM preview using option one as you described above and switched to using a Verizon GS5 while I waited. 4 days later I received a brand new replacement Nexus 6 and wasn't charged anything for my damaged phone nor denied service due to software modifications.
It was incredibly quick and hassle free, and I would definitely give their repair service a 5/5 stars for quality service and speed.
Now, if your phone is older than a year you WILL have to pay a fee for repairs. However, if your phone is relatively new you can easily claim warranty twice within that first year.
Also, I've never experienced this burn in people talk about on either of my devices so if they claim it's been rectified, it probably has.

They repaired (replaced) your broken device for free? That is amazing! The reps I talked to advised me it was $175 for damage repair. (Because they just replace it I guess) So your saying you get 2 claims during the one year warranty for damage even?
Did Google still own Motorola when you sent your phone in?

No, you are correct! I seem to have been miss informed, kinda. I just checked Nexus 6 warranty info @ Motorola.com.
The ONLY thing excluded from warranty "repair" is liquid damage / extreme moisture damage. If you have owned your Nexus 6 for longer than one year, THEN the $175 fee is charged for a malfunctioning or damaged device. People need to know this! I wonder how many people replaced their own displays that they broke, tossed out, sold for parts, etc their damaged Nexus 6's not knowing that Motorola would have repaired it for free had they just sent it in for free.
I am glad I now know this! Not to mention, I will have proof of "purchase" for my Nexus 6 because they are shipping me the new device. So I have a year from today pretty much.
Thank you for posting! I would have never looked and been misguided by not one, but two reps!
Also, I did a full wipe, stock flash, bootloader locked my device just to be safe. I mean, they are holding $500 hostage on my credit card. lol. I'm not taking any chances!
"Burn in" is covered but its pointless. Amoleds will "burn in" except if hide the softkeys. Dealing with "burn in" was better than unknowns of refurb.
Shattered screens are not covered by warranty. They charge $175 whether in or out of warranty.

That is what I would assume, but reading the warranty guidelines the only thing stated as not being covered is liquid damage.

Not saying you're wrong, but feel free to tell that to my no-charge busted screen warranty claim.
Most manufacturers have a one year limited warranty, and you don't have to provide proof of purchase unless asked. Usually the date you bought the device and where you bought it will suffice. I got my girlfriend's S5 fixed for free by Samsung at the same time my Nexus 6 was replaced. She dropped it and busted the LCD. Warranty covered it too.
I wanted to chime in with my recent experience. Im still waiting on my replacement (should be today). My nexus 6 was having the split screen issue no matter what rom or kernel I was running and the USB port was really loose (was interfering with android auto). I went with option 2 and they told me they are sending a like new not brand new.

Update....so gotta give Motorola support props. I had also joked that they could send me an white 64GB (mine was 32gb blue) and they said they can't do that. Told him no problem. Well, to my surprise, they sent me a brand new white 64gb. The box was still factory sealed and includes a brand new charger and cable. Lucky Me!

That is awesome! Congrats on that! Now you have my hopes up... lol. I asked if I could receive a Cloud White instead of Midnight Blue. He advised me that he could not do that but that he would notate my RMA that I requested a Cloud White instead so it would be up to the warehouse if they wanted to make an exception. I have been thinking about getting a cloud white replacement housing and back. I found a site that sells true oem parts and it would cost me $40.00 all said and done. But it would be awesome if they just sent me a Cloud White!
Also, everyone that I have heard of that has had their Nexus 6 replaced by Motorola in the last few months has received a factory sealed device in retail packaging with the original retail accessories. I seriously don't think that they are refurbished devices. I have or know people who have received refurbished electronics from warranty claims before such as Blu Ray players, computer components, phones, tablets, etc. (I'm the family tech) They seem to usually be in unmarked packaging, and just the unit itself with no accessories.
I could be wrong but I can't see a company packing refurbs in retail packaging, sealed with all of the normal included accessories.
I helped my uncle with his iPhone 5 in the past and a LG Tablet. We sent them both in for warranty repair and he received refurbs back in non-retail packaging with no accessories. (They had different serial numbers so I doubt they were repaired. Sprint even wanted to charge him $35 for activation on the iPhone 5. lol)

I wasn't so lucky. I received my replacement Nexus 6 today. It was in a moto care box. The phone itself in the box was in a bubble wrap sleeve. Everyone I have heard of got a new in retail box replacement, but not me! lol. The phone did have the factory plastic thing on the screen, and after VERY close examination of the device there is not so much as a tiny knick or scratch or a single spec of dust in the speaker grills. I'm not sure what to make of it. Either the rep I talked to lied to me, or they have new devices that they issue in non-retail packaging.
Anyone receive their replacement like this?

I have received one each way. One in retail package, new sealed box, and another that was in bubblewrap sleeve with plastic on it. I'm betting that the bubble wrapped one is probably a refurb, but if it is, mine was flawless as well, so they probably tore it apart, put a new screen, back/side casing and speaker grill set in it. There are a few other companies I've gotten refurbs from over the years that were this good, but not many.
Well, never mind I guess. I thought it looked like a brand new device but it clearly is not. The display is worse than the one I was replacing. It looks like this is going to be a fun ride. I would literally rather keep the one I have than the one they sent me... It has worse burn in on the nav bar than mine did. Also, there is a dark hue on I would say 1/4 of the bottom of the display. As if it is not as bright as the rest.
This is definitely going back to Motorola! I am going to call them now.

Oh I see. I hate refurbished replacements. I don't know why, and I know they "inspect" them but I just hate the idea of it I guess. I mean, mine looked brand spanking new but judging by the serious nav bar burn in and how the bottom 1/4 of the display was darker, almost pinkish hue to it, the display was definitely from a used unit.
I was just on the phone with Motorola for over an hour. I explained to a supervisor in the escalations department how I paid the $24.99 and let them hold $500+ dollars on my credit card, only to receive a worse device than the one I originally had. So, he said that in order for him to send another replacement immediately that he would have to issue another $500 security hold. BUT, when he created my RMA he set it up so that I will be receiving a Brand New, 64GB Cloud White. I originally had a 32GB Midnight Blue! This is awesome! I went from super frustrated to super happy. lol. Motorola definitely has some of the better customer service that I have experienced to say the least. He offered the 64GB upgrade for the inconvenience, which I told him I greatly appreciated but I would love if he could send me a cloud white version as well.
I have a minor screen issue, get tearing like once a month on some kernels, but Couple times a day on others. Scarred to warranty because everything else is great.
i just got off the phone with motorola because of deep scratches and i've started to notice after occasional reboots, my SIM card will not read. i'll have to pull it and re-insert it 3-4 times until it actually picks up. i've tried cleaning the SIM slot with a soft bristled toothbrush several times but still happening. so according to motorola, nevermind the SIM problem, if there's a scratch on the screen i'll have to pay $175 plus taxes. for those looking for the warranty guidelines, here you go:

Damn! The person who posted about sending his in damaged got extremely lucky! So they told you that if it even had a scratch on it that you would have to pay $175 to have it replaced?
