Is the LG G" still worth it? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I can't make up my mind. Should I buy this phone LG G2or should I go for a moto g 2015?
I don't like the G3 because it heats up insanely...
Thanks for the help.
Edit: sorry for my mistake in the thread title. It should be "Is the LG G2 still worth it?"

Coming from someone who owns both a G2 & Moto G, get the G2.
Moto G 2015 is a good phone no doubt but no match for the G2.

I was in the same dilemma a fee weeks back, if you're well versed in rooting and roming then definitely get the G2(that's what I did), has a more powerful processor, higher resolution display, bigger screen, better screen to body ratio, etc.
The only issue is the software, as I said if you want a good software experience you'll have to root it.

I'm still on stock 5.0.2 Tmobile.
Have great battery life and stable experience!
Like he said, if you want to ROOT, this phone is as good as it gets.
There are tons of ROMS to play with including Cloudy G3 and the upcoming Android M ROMS

Thanks. Yes I'm experienced in rooting. That's something that is in favour of the lg, as it is not necessary to ask lg for permission to root... [emoji1]

I'm planning to get one as a 2nd phone for work

The g2 is great to be honest I like it more then some of the phones that came out this year maybe because I get ROMs without ruining the phone or having hard flashing directions

The device itself is great, but be careful where you buy it from. Some people (myself included) have purchased 'frankenphones', devices that are made up of parts from different model G2's.

Thanks. I'm buying it from Amazon. Should be original.
Did you buy it in a Chinese store?

My wife has moto g 3rd gen and my two-years old g2 is still much better (performance, usability) and there are so many excellent custom ROMs like Ressurection Remix for instance, so good choice...

The 3rd Gen Moto G is a good phone as I've just bought one for a friend.
Even though my G2 is still running stock 20H KK 4.4.2, there is no way I'd swap it for a Moto G. Even though the G2 is 2 years old now, you can still see its a premium phone. Battery, Screen Quality, IR blaster, LED Notification Light, Battery.........
In 2 years time, some will still be rocking a G2.

Everybody is praising the lg g2. great.
Jcc

I received my OnePlus 2 yesterday, but be sure I'll not give up G2 for now. Also Android M AOSP development started on G2, so I'll try to compile it for the G2.
So yeah, G2 is still a great phone.

Do you think that android m from the g3 will be ported to the g2?

I don't think so. If LG won't make Android M for G2 it will be rather hard to port anything.

LG G2 or Moto X

Im considering the LG G2 or the Moto X kinda dont know which to chose...Have anyone had a chance or experience with the Moto X, that could chime in on what they thought as to which was better in their opinion?
G2 that is all.

No reason as to why?
Better is in the eye of the beholder. I think that they are both great phones that cater to different audiences. It really depends on your preference.
For me, the G2 was a no-brainer, as I prefer a larger (>5") screen as well as long battery life. There are a lot of people that want a smaller screen, and the X might be a great choice for them. Having said that, if you want a larger screen or screen size isn't a factor for you, I'd go with the G2.
Never had a LG phone.. I'm wondering how the reception stack up to motorola...I had a SG3 and it sucked really bad...Also, is the LG pure AOSP or close to it?
I was in the same boat. The deciding factor for me came down to price. Both phones are 600.00, and if I'm going to pay a premium price for a phone, I want premium components. The Screen, Battery, CPU, and the Camera are premium on the G2, they aren't on the Moto X. So my money went to the G2. I do think the Moto X is a fine phone, but it's not a 600.00 phone, IMO.
I've had a chance to use both the X and G2, hands down G2, same size as the S4 with a bigger screen, better cpu, screen, and just as good battery life.
I was really contemplating getting a g2... Then I had to do a reality check. After the huge disappointment of the g2x,I just don't think I can stomach another lg phone. The g2x could have been great but lg seemed to just turn their back on it. The g2 looks awesome but I'd hate to blow that much money again. Same reason I haven't bought a new nexus.

Ignoring specs, the Moto X is more practical. The size and shape feel great, and it looks much better, is better built, and can be customized. The price seems kind of high now, but you know its gonna drop like a rock since it doesn't have the highest specs to begin with. The LG G2 is still gonna maintain its price for a while. Then again, the Nexus 5 is gonna come out soon. I would choose that over these for the best bang for your buck.
Coming from a Gnex and I am facing the same question. The chance of Verizon getting the new nexus are well probably zero so I went and picked up the X the other day with the intention of possibly swapping it out for the G2 within 2 weeks. I like the X and still need to go okay with a G2 this weekend but if the G2 is as nice as people are saying it is I will probably end up dealing it out.
The X just feels small to me, I keep saying to myself it's the same size as the Gnex but it still just feels small.
In the end for me its about the screen, both phones will eventually get rooted and the awesome developers will produce custom builds for both so......

Base on this rumor the Nexus 5 could support a bunch of LTE bands and possibly Verizon, even though the found out the LG D821 is a Verizon G2, it doesn't explain the D820 with a smaller 4.96" screen so it could still be the Nexus, regardless it will be made by LG.

I'm in the same boat. Coming from an LG Optimus G (which I loved for the most part), I am due an upgrade. I purchased a black Moto X on launch day, but will be exchanging it for a G2 when they hit stores Friday, and I'll cite a few reasons why...
1. It blows that neither phone has expandable storage, but for $199 the G2 gives you 32GB whereas the MotoX gives you 16 (unless you spend $50 more)
2. The screen on the Moto X looks great... Until you put it next to an HTC One. Comparison is the thief of joy I guess
3. The Moto X doesn't lag at all, but given AT&T's move to a 24 month upgrade cycle, I do have some concerns about just how "future proof" it's hardware will be.
I do love the Moto X. It looks and feels great, and I am definitely going to miss active notifications. However, I just think the G2 gives me more of what I want/need for my money.
I was thinking of the MotoX for my wife and the G2 for me. But at the price point the MotoX is at Id rather just buy her a G2 like Im getting or even a Galaxy S4 (since she doesnt really need a stock Android experience).
If the Moto were cheaper or had replaceable battery/sd slot then maybe, but 199 for "meh" worth of phone isnt that great, especially with the brand new G2 at the same price and the S4 way cheaper.

You can read any G2 review or watch a Youtube video review/comparison and that should give you a better idea. But in short, NO it is not close to AOSP. A simple root/de-bloat will go a long way for this phone. I have the N4 now and the reception is fine, but I'm sure the radios are different.
G2. No OIS on MotoX
I have a Maxx same as the moto x in terms of user experience and love it I was contemplating taking it back (getting G2) because today is day 14 for me to return the Maxx. Guess what? I'm keeping the maxx the battery is killer the os is so simple and fluid I can not... let me repeat I CAN NOT get this UI to lag skip glitch etc. It is amazing the real deciding factor is root Jcase just got root for the motox and an exploit should arrive in a timely manner. Think the LG G2 will get root? I don't know, what I do know is my Maxx will.

The Maxx is also 100 more even on contract. Id like a comparison of the Ultra vs the LG first.
And, even Touchwiz is fairly fluid nowadays....the CPUs on these things are going to make anything feel fast.

[Q] Should i trust in LG G2?

Hey Guys, i am a RAZR MAXX owner here and really tempted with LG G2 because of the price here and its technology (mainly the GRAM) and its battery life. However i am put off by the software side though, as it is a bit too cartoonish for me and i really hate those overblown statusbar buttons and some LG history of late ROM update. So.. should i forget about that and take the plunge? I actually am a Sony fan, but their UI is too elegant for me that i will waste my money on my paid icon themes besides the power consumption of the Sony's (esp the screen) is rather high for now so i thought that maybe the LG G2 is the bang of the buck for me.
So to sum it off, here are my concerns:
+ Battery Life
+ Top class chipset
- LG UI (but that's the main point, so i can replace it with my Nova and Icon pack without feeling hesitant rather than with the Sony's UI )
- almost non existent future update from LG (please CMIIW)
Any input will be appreciated
I came from sony,i used x10,xs,xz and xz1 and i am happy that i left sony and i did not regret.
This is my first lg phone and i love it,i don't know how the updates will be but sony is not that fast.

Sent from my LG-D801 using xda app-developers app
I took the plunge, coming from an HTC Thunderbolt. LG has already started better than many other manufacturers by releasing a phone with top specs, a current version of the OS (barely behind what is on the Nexus line, not several versions behind like some other new phones when released), and posted the source less than a month after the release. This phone is also easily rootable, the dev's are hard at work on their different projects such as modifications to stock, CM in alpha, etc. Few manufacturers have a great track record when it comes to timely updates or support after the first year, but LG is in the game already with a good start and the dev community should be able to keep this phone updated well past the time when this phone is "older" in the tech world.
I'd say check out the phone, read the reviews, see the support we have already, and base your decision off of that. This is a phone that should easily last me for 2 years or more until I decide to get another one.
G2 is the superior phone & fulfills all your needs. Change the launcher if you don't like the stock one and you're good to go!
Not sure if you are a rooter or not and I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but I'm kind of worried about development for the G2. So if you do like tinkering, just keep the slow start in mind. I love and appreciate the work the devs put into these devices. I do donate, btw. Just wasn't expecting the slow start with available roms. I thought this device's forum was going to explode

As I noticed that you're Indonesian I suggest you to look for a promotion or discount price for g2. I just bought my G2 three days ago at LG G2 Promotion, Central Park, Jakarta.
One of the best deal I've made. Got IDR 1 million cashback (from the original price IDR 6.8mil) and a bluetooth device. As for the phone itself, coming from Nexus 4, I find G2 noticeably faster and smoother out of the box than my N4. I am proud owner of N4 but compared to G2 (stock vs stock), it's way a different world. Only with custom rom and kernel (PA rom and hellscore kernel) my N4 get near the smoothness of G2. Maybe the only thing I miss is that the development here is not as much as Nexus generation devices.

To OP: you don't have to worry about dev for LG. Just sit, relax and this phone will get the ROMs it deserves. If you think LG is bad, think again (I'm looking at YOU, Motorola).
There are so many launchers and icon packs that will replace Lg ui. G2 will also receive 4.4 updates so that will ties your up for a while.
Devs for g2 are doing great works. Root, recoveries, are avaliable. If you are not in to flashing rom you can stop with rooting your phone, and be happy with the things you can do.
Personally I came from nexus device. I flash roms every other weeks to try to get best battery life and smoothness for my phone. With G2 hardwares and battery, I am enjoying stock, forget about flashing and just uses the phone.

First, this is NOT an attack on you personally so please dont take it that way. But what the hell phones did you guys come from that make the dev and forum for this phone slow?! This forum is about to eclipse the size of my last phone that is 2 years old! And that LG phone didn't have anything for several months. This phone already has bootloader bypass and root and a few roms going with more on the way. Maybe it's not as fast as Samsung devices that have millions upon millions of sales in a couple of days, but compared to many phones this is quite quick. Chill, it's coming. My last phone was slow for dev due to small sale base and only one carrier, but we still had official CM and MANY others. There will most certainly be no shortage of development here.

Except for wireless charging I can't think of much. But with our amazing battery that doesn't seem to matter! I love this phone...stock and all.
Absolutely not, just on the basis of battery.
yeah g2 has better specs. to me nexus is a mid range device.
Nope, especially when I managed to snag a new G2 off Craigslist for only $50 more than a nexus.
Glad I chose my g2
I'm on Verizon, so it's not like I have the option to get an N5, but lately I've been thinking about ditching Verizon for a GSM provider and picking up the N5. I'm month-to-month with Verizon currently and pay ~$80/month. I still have my unlimited data, which is one of the big reasons I'm still with Big Red. I'm not a power user, but I like the unlimited notion.
I have been seriously debating if Straight Talk or a GoPhone plan is worth the money I'll save from ditching Verizon.
The bottom line is that I really like my G2, but part of me wants to try out the N5.
Don't hate on me, but YAWN, stock android/Google Edition. I had the HTC One. Couldn't believe I actually liked sense 5, but I did. Tried the official GE edition on it. Ho hum. no more character. just another clone.
Same with this phone. I didn't plan on liking LG Home, but I actually do. And I like the various feature it bring us, whether I use them often or not. (and no offtense to cm or cm users, but I had it on here today for about 20 minutes before I asked myself WTF am I doing, and restored my regular setup
From pictures, it looks like they are wasting more screen space on bezel than the G2 as well. I am happy with my decision

Based on reviews. The LG G2 still has the better specs. Any Nexus 5 feature the LG G2 is missing?

According to reviews and users, the nexus 5 has mediocre battery life. I have one coming Wednesday and it'll go on swappa asap.

Midrange? I think that's a stretch.

yeah because all the previous version of the nexus has slightly lower spec than the flag ship phone of the manufacturer. also while coming out later, I mean if it comes out later it should have better specs.
no
I'm honestly amazed at the excitement over the N5. It has one, single selling point - what some might call an advantage: it's pure Android and its updated first / more frequently. Everything else is a step below the G2.
The N5 is for purists, I guess. I rather have the larger, better screen, incredible battery life, and better camera (and knock, knock!)

So far nothing, the g2 has a much better battery, better camera, better screen and faster charging. Kitkat will be rolling soon on cyanogenmod.

Unfortunately the "better camera" will become the "same camera" once you install CM.

Because this phone is a year old. The new moto x 2015 forums have been created. With time it will get slower and slower. The only exceptuon being when android m is relrased, those still on the moto x 2014 will start talking about it like crazy when it's time.

Just because a device is a year old, people don't stop writing about it. Just take a look into the Nexus 5 forums.
The reason I think, why the Moto X forums aren't that active is simply because not so many people have this phone. Even fewer who are on xda.
For example the Nexus 5 has been sold far more often than the Moto X. And as Nexus phones are designed for devs and enthusiasts way more people here on xda have it and dev for this phone than for the Moto X.
i was looking into buying this phone and was very surprised at the lack of development for it, even after a year after release...i previously had a galaxy s3 and currently an lg g2 and development for those devices are very much in full force..i really wanted to buy this phone because it has such a great hardware build with great specs, but the lack of development turned me off
Well, the phone just works out of the box. Not much need of roms development when it works fine.
I must say, I am pretty much satisfied with the stock rom as it is.
Only thing that I want is Xposed modules for lollipop working flawless.

I was just checking random threads... The Xperia SP was released in 2013 and is now 2 years old. We have got a very active community and golden developers with a lot of ROMs (even 5.1.1).
It is weird that your forums aren't active because everybody knows the Moto X.

I am not the person who posted the complaint... I was defending this phone's development by saying that we have the 5.1.1 roms too.

Oh I am sorry, I didn't read the name because I was busy.
This the first phone I used which doesn't need to root, modify or install a different ROM on it, I did it twice installing new ROMs but reverted back to stock in one or two days.
Moto X special features are not replaceable up till now.
Being stock is just the way it has to be. Just root few apps out some froze and xposed.... Finally most of the cellphone companies (lg, Sony, motorola, Google, dtc) are making an incredible work on the stock stuff....

If this surprises you, you should see the 2013 Moto X forums. I have owned both and can tell you that the most viewed threads are probably related to rooting the phone. That's practically all I need.

I completely agree with you.
Installed CM 12 snapshot.
Then CM 12.1 Nightly.
Nightly was buggy a bit.
Tried Nexus Exp.
Finally back on 5.1.1 stock.
Gotta say nothing beats the stock till now.
Still I'd like to see some active development for roms like MIUI, PA even as a Legacy Device.
Wish I had time to learn how to port

The nice thing about the Moto X 2014 is that it works well out of the box without the need for much tweaking. I mainly need root to WiFi tether for free. I also like a few rooted apps like Titanium B/U and Adaway. CF Lumen is nice too. But other than that, there isn't much I need to change.
Now I have the XT1096 (Verizon) locked down tight model so I did have to get root via MoFo and that required some threads/posts to get accomplished. But other than that there isn't much to talk about when you have a phone that works great without needing much in the way of tweaks for you to have a good user experience. I value the Moto software more than any tweaks a custom ROM could give me so I don't miss the custom ROMs.
Once you get the MX14 rooted, there isn't really much to talk about b/c the phone is great without any custom ROMs. Accessories are worth talking about but people talk about those most when the phone is first released and then the chatter dies down. I don't even bother with a case very often on mine because the leather is so beautiful although I have a case I use if I am running outside. I don't use a screen protector either. I do use the Seidio Springclip holster for the GS5 because I like to have a holster. I have a FitBag case for the phone when it is in my purse, love it. I have the Hula bumper but don't use it.

Truth! I've tried other ROMs but always come back to stock. Motos software is too valuable to me and I use it daily!

I think that since motorola razr and razr hd motorola is making awesome stuff on stock firmware, you don't really need a customs room, just root and, if you like the nav bar to be more thin or the center clock, xposed install and you're done. ... I came from a LG g2 because it broke and I am impressed on battery performance and system smooth, remember g2 got a 3k battery.....

Bought G4 and sold it and bought Nexus 6P - Reasons

Hi everyone. I was happy Nexus user until i got Oneplus One - The flagship Killer. Later after using it for an year, i planned to change my device and i bought a brand new LG G4. I was really happy when i bought it. I didn't make any big research in XDA to learn that it was not able to unlock bootloader. When i found it i started regretting. Specs wise the phone was very powerful but LG G4 had no unlock bootloader makes it **** according to my concern. So after a month or two i bought Nexus 6p and I'm back to that form where i fall in love with Nexus Brand. Now I'm happy. Specs is very powerful comparing to LG G4 and even the camera is also awesome with HDR. But there is no manual mode in camera just like how LG made it. I heard there are lot of apps which allows you to take macro picture using manual mode just like how LG was. So that's it. I'll update regarding the battery life here soon after using the phone for 48 hours. Thank you.

Maybe you should read at xda. My bootloader is unlocked (official supported by LG).
That the nexus phones are nice, we all know.
But The G4 is a pretty awesome phone with a wonderfull cam (if you know how to use it)

Not all G4s are supported by the official bootloader unlock tool.
Only the European H815 is supported. No news on whether other G4s will be supported, especially the SEA and TWN G4.
I didn't say I dunno to use it and I mentioned in my Topic that LG G4 has an awesome cam. If your bootloader is unlocked that doesn't mean all carrier bootloader has unlocked.

Yea you are right.. I think he doesn't know that. All I have been waiting was to enjoy some kernel or some root for marshmallow at least. But what I learnt is it never will happen unless LG release the official unlock bootloader tool. So I made my exit and bought Nexus 6P and I can tell you even this has a good camera too.

Lol. I have had several g4s changing phones as we do here from sgs6 to g4 then to nexus 6p. Everyone is different but I really enjoy lg g4 interface. Most useful feature for me is the double tap to wake and copy paste tray which stores regular text oh and sd card and removable battery. Things which annoy me are the slow focus times for camera indoor situations ! Oversharpening in video capture and rear speaker even if it is loud. Nexus 6p for me was a really frustrating phone missing too many key features oems have added and left pure android playing catch up.

Even I love all that feature.. But my LG G4's motherboard was dead and I had to go to service centre which is 300km away from my home. I traveled and repaired my phone and came back. Thereafter I was bit worried you know. I had only 2 months warranty left. So I sold my LG G4 and happy to take a new Nexus 6P. I don't want a broken phone.

Definitely understand your view.
But that doesn't mean the Nexus 6P wouldn't break.
It is electronics, it could break at any moment....

But not that soon... I didn't even over clock or underclock the phone damage it's motherboard also.. LG g4 I never dropped my phone. Also no dent or scratches happen. I dunno why motherboard was dead. I read many blog and many Android forum that LG has motherboard issue.

True but it was fixed in newer hardware, which is likely what you got after repair.
Deserter!
Lol, just kidding, the 6p is a fine device, the G4 too.
For me, the 6p was a little bigger than the G4 , and I prefered the lg because of that.
If the 6p has and SD card slot it would be my device right now. Did not get the S6 because of that reason too.
I've got my G4 where I like it now, rooted, DPI at 540, xposed, and tweekbox. I am on LP but really MM does not give me anything I like. In fact I hate the new DnD notification since I always keep my device in DnD where it only makes sounds for phone calls.
Unlock the boot loader and this would be a perfect device for me for a while.

Provided you don't get another 505 refurb. Each device that goes back for warranty is an expense and they are going to try and mitigate that somewhat.
So the question is how does one ascertain the serial of the replaced board. Preferably without having to disassemble the device ?
