LG G2 or Moto X - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im considering the LG G2 or the Moto X kinda dont know which to chose...Have anyone had a chance or experience with the Moto X, that could chime in on what they thought as to which was better in their opinion?

G2 that is all.

No reason as to why?

Better is in the eye of the beholder. I think that they are both great phones that cater to different audiences. It really depends on your preference.
For me, the G2 was a no-brainer, as I prefer a larger (>5") screen as well as long battery life. There are a lot of people that want a smaller screen, and the X might be a great choice for them. Having said that, if you want a larger screen or screen size isn't a factor for you, I'd go with the G2.

Never had a LG phone.. I'm wondering how the reception stack up to motorola...I had a SG3 and it sucked really bad...Also, is the LG pure AOSP or close to it?

I was in the same boat. The deciding factor for me came down to price. Both phones are 600.00, and if I'm going to pay a premium price for a phone, I want premium components. The Screen, Battery, CPU, and the Camera are premium on the G2, they aren't on the Moto X. So my money went to the G2. I do think the Moto X is a fine phone, but it's not a 600.00 phone, IMO.

I've had a chance to use both the X and G2, hands down G2, same size as the S4 with a bigger screen, better cpu, screen, and just as good battery life.

I was really contemplating getting a g2... Then I had to do a reality check. After the huge disappointment of the g2x,I just don't think I can stomach another lg phone. The g2x could have been great but lg seemed to just turn their back on it. The g2 looks awesome but I'd hate to blow that much money again. Same reason I haven't bought a new nexus.

Ignoring specs, the Moto X is more practical. The size and shape feel great, and it looks much better, is better built, and can be customized. The price seems kind of high now, but you know its gonna drop like a rock since it doesn't have the highest specs to begin with. The LG G2 is still gonna maintain its price for a while. Then again, the Nexus 5 is gonna come out soon. I would choose that over these for the best bang for your buck.

Coming from a Gnex and I am facing the same question. The chance of Verizon getting the new nexus are well probably zero so I went and picked up the X the other day with the intention of possibly swapping it out for the G2 within 2 weeks. I like the X and still need to go okay with a G2 this weekend but if the G2 is as nice as people are saying it is I will probably end up dealing it out.
The X just feels small to me, I keep saying to myself it's the same size as the Gnex but it still just feels small.
In the end for me its about the screen, both phones will eventually get rooted and the awesome developers will produce custom builds for both so......

Base on this rumor the Nexus 5 could support a bunch of LTE bands and possibly Verizon, even though the found out the LG D821 is a Verizon G2, it doesn't explain the D820 with a smaller 4.96" screen so it could still be the Nexus, regardless it will be made by LG.

I'm in the same boat. Coming from an LG Optimus G (which I loved for the most part), I am due an upgrade. I purchased a black Moto X on launch day, but will be exchanging it for a G2 when they hit stores Friday, and I'll cite a few reasons why...
1. It blows that neither phone has expandable storage, but for $199 the G2 gives you 32GB whereas the MotoX gives you 16 (unless you spend $50 more)
2. The screen on the Moto X looks great... Until you put it next to an HTC One. Comparison is the thief of joy I guess
3. The Moto X doesn't lag at all, but given AT&T's move to a 24 month upgrade cycle, I do have some concerns about just how "future proof" it's hardware will be.
I do love the Moto X. It looks and feels great, and I am definitely going to miss active notifications. However, I just think the G2 gives me more of what I want/need for my money.

I was thinking of the MotoX for my wife and the G2 for me. But at the price point the MotoX is at Id rather just buy her a G2 like Im getting or even a Galaxy S4 (since she doesnt really need a stock Android experience).
If the Moto were cheaper or had replaceable battery/sd slot then maybe, but 199 for "meh" worth of phone isnt that great, especially with the brand new G2 at the same price and the S4 way cheaper.

You can read any G2 review or watch a Youtube video review/comparison and that should give you a better idea. But in short, NO it is not close to AOSP. A simple root/de-bloat will go a long way for this phone. I have the N4 now and the reception is fine, but I'm sure the radios are different.

G2. No OIS on MotoX

I have a Maxx same as the moto x in terms of user experience and love it I was contemplating taking it back (getting G2) because today is day 14 for me to return the Maxx. Guess what? I'm keeping the maxx the battery is killer the os is so simple and fluid I can not... let me repeat I CAN NOT get this UI to lag skip glitch etc. It is amazing the real deciding factor is root Jcase just got root for the motox and an exploit should arrive in a timely manner. Think the LG G2 will get root? I don't know, what I do know is my Maxx will.

The Maxx is also 100 more even on contract. Id like a comparison of the Ultra vs the LG first.
And, even Touchwiz is fairly fluid nowadays....the CPUs on these things are going to make anything feel fast.

Do you plan on going from a "higher spec'd" device to the Moto X...

and why? I like the simple design, hopefully this 4.7" screen will be more readable than the htc one 4.7" screen. I'm thinking so? But if I get the device I'll be coming from an sgs4. Kinda tired of touchjizz and always had a softspot for motorola, and miss my nexus 4 experience minus the horrible battery life. I hope we can unlock the bootloader on this device with no issues :0
I'm using an SGS4 as well and have always loved Moto handsets. I'm sure the Moto X is going to be great. Nothing beats Moto radios...
The bootloader is supposed to be unlockable on the Google Store variant, which is what I'm gunning for...

Would the google store variant be stripped of the moto x features? Sort of like the google sgs4 edition stripped of tw. IDK.

That would be great, the question is when? And why would they not release at the same time as carriers. I mean I'm guessing they dont want to interfere with carrier sales but that can also backfire as people can just wait for the google version? More choices for different types of users.
I'm sorta making a lateral move. I am going from the Galaxy Nexus to the to the Moto X. It isn't really a major spec bump if I remember all the specs correctly.

Currently have the SGS3. Not really wanting a new phone, but wife needs one and has an upgrade, so she's taking this and I get a new one!
I thought I would be a shoe in for the SGS4, but the X has really intrigued me. That and I just end up running CM 10.X on the galaxy, so why not start out with a stockish experience? I do enjoy ROMing and modding, so not sure how that will work out if I get it thru Verizon on contract. If unlocking the bootloader is definitely a no-go, then I could wait for developer edition. Not sure what I'll do.

the way the software and hardware work together far surpasses any higher specd device on the market right now..
the reason the iphone is such a success (other than crazy marketing) even with its sub-par specs is because the hardware and software play nicely giving you a very smooth user experience.

This is such an annoying thing to read over and over.
The iPhone STILL has a class leading GPU and a year ago it's processor was EXCELLENT. Apple doesn't skimp on specs. They use less ram sometimes, but that's about it.

Its CPU is nothing to write home about. The dual core swift is about on par with the MSM8960 krait CPU. I doubt that the A7 CPU will surpass the SD800, but the OS is less demanding and the GPU will be awesome, although Samsung is starting to use imagination technologies GPUs again, which is good.

Based on all the reviews I have read, there hasn't been anything you would normally do with a phone that the MotoX cannot do and is very responsive. That's all you really can ask for. The Adreno 320 GPU is the same as what's in the htc one and sgs4, so gaming isn't an issue either.

As long as its staying as close to vanilla as possible sprinkled with a few moto x goodies, it should be smooth. I hardly game on my devices. I'm looking forward to this, not expecting to be wow'ed. I was going to wait for the nexus 5, but lg again? I'm not the biggest lg fan.

My Verizon GS3 (Owned 2) wireless radio > RAZR Maxx + Razr HD. Better Wi-Fi range & connection as well.
To answer the thread, no. I will not be getting the Moto X. Development has always been weak for Motorola phones. I've owned 2 stated above. My wife use to own the Motorola Photon on Sprint. I know Motorola phones well enough lol. Not blaming developers. It's Motorola's security and locking everything down. Plus I don't like Motorola's camera quality for pictures and videos.
I'm now waiting to see what the next gen Nexus will bring. After owning a Nexus 7 (2013), I enjoy it too much I now want that experience on my phone also. Still love my S3 but when my contract is up, time to move on.

Except for wireless charging I can't think of much. But with our amazing battery that doesn't seem to matter! I love this phone...stock and all.
Absolutely not, just on the basis of battery.
yeah g2 has better specs. to me nexus is a mid range device.
Nope, especially when I managed to snag a new G2 off Craigslist for only $50 more than a nexus.
Glad I chose my g2
I'm on Verizon, so it's not like I have the option to get an N5, but lately I've been thinking about ditching Verizon for a GSM provider and picking up the N5. I'm month-to-month with Verizon currently and pay ~$80/month. I still have my unlimited data, which is one of the big reasons I'm still with Big Red. I'm not a power user, but I like the unlimited notion.
I have been seriously debating if Straight Talk or a GoPhone plan is worth the money I'll save from ditching Verizon.
The bottom line is that I really like my G2, but part of me wants to try out the N5.
Don't hate on me, but YAWN, stock android/Google Edition. I had the HTC One. Couldn't believe I actually liked sense 5, but I did. Tried the official GE edition on it. Ho hum. no more character. just another clone.
Same with this phone. I didn't plan on liking LG Home, but I actually do. And I like the various feature it bring us, whether I use them often or not. (and no offtense to cm or cm users, but I had it on here today for about 20 minutes before I asked myself WTF am I doing, and restored my regular setup
From pictures, it looks like they are wasting more screen space on bezel than the G2 as well. I am happy with my decision

I'm honestly amazed at the excitement over the N5. It has one, single selling point - what some might call an advantage: it's pure Android and its updated first / more frequently. Everything else is a step below the G2.
The N5 is for purists, I guess. I rather have the larger, better screen, incredible battery life, and better camera (and knock, knock!)

For me, absolutely. I went as far as to buy a second Dev edition in case I ever break mine. If you're a power user, it might not be for you because of the dual core or lower clock speed. Also if you're a bit of a flashaholic, not much development going on. However most of us who own the device think things like active display and touchless controls outweigh the downsides (by miles in my opinion). No one can tell you if you'll like the phone, I suggest getting your hands on one to see if you even like these features before you make a decision.

Personally, i used to be a flashaholic, but since nov/dec, ive really settled on the google edition stock htc one rom, which is pretty close to the moto x rom if im correct; so the lack of develepment, while dissapointing, is not reason for me to shy away. I have played with a moto x a couple months ago at my local costco, but thats not as good as having one untethered and really able to mess around with. The idea of the wood backs, active notifications, insane battery life, supreme radio performance, and small form factor are the factors that pull me to it. Everyone who has/had one seems to say they love it, and im betting i really would too.

If you want all of Samsung's bloat and gimmicky features plus Samsung Knox just to get the "better specs" I'd say go for the gs5. If you look at the at&t note 3 forums especially the development section they don't have much development going on either because of Samsung knox. You want a great phone that's has everyday usefulness go moto x but don't get the carrier branded moto x get the Dev edition. But if you can wait several months the moto x2 might be out.
MOTO X SLAPPED
the moto x is truly wonderful, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be better.
i would personally wait for the moto x 2.
or the Z2 for that matter, if it does make it to ATT.
the special features are really nice, but i don't feel like its enough of an upgrade over the HTC one.
the camera is pretty mediocre, and so is the screen. the speakers obviously would not be as impressive.
battery would be about the same.
the Z2 on the other hand would improve in many aspects over the One.
so i would wait for the new moto x so you get your moneys worth instead of side-stepping, which might have you dissapointed with your X the minute the new X comes out.
I should also note that i would only really have it for 6 monthsish. I also have an upgrade in december, so yeah.
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
well then if you want to try something new go for the moto x, if you really want an all out upgrade, as much as i'm not really interested in the device, the S5 is a better upgrade.
the only thing the moto x has going for it against the S5 is the form factor and the active display honestly (which is pretty awesome but still feasible on the S5 which also has a LED display).
I love the moto x but given your choice i would probably opt for the galaxy 5 and wait for december for the new motorola, whatever it will be.
the galaxy will have a much better camera, performance, battery, display, micro sd slot, removable battery, water and dust protection, some nice features, and as far as i can tell will also have always listening mode (which was available in the note 3, so should be on the S5)
probably have better wifi reception and connectivity also.
the only downside would be the touchwiz rom, which has honestly gotten much better than the days of the S2 (i still don't like it though).
however, this is going to probably be the most popular android phone and thus will have the largest dev community, you can expect to have an AOSP rom in no time to solve that issue.
I really like both of my moto x's. I don't flash roms with the moto x like I have with other phones in the past. I feel like it is well balanced for us who like to mod and also for normal users. My wife has the regular white moto x coming from a iphone 4s and she loves it. Personally I would save the upgrade, and buy a barely used moto x on swappa.

This is probably one of the best responses i could have read. Everybody mentions the new moto phone, but is that even confirmed? And i had an S3 that i modded the hell out of, but i was never really thrilled with it. Its a very important choice, but its nice to see such a good review like this. I promise to keep this all in mind as i make my choice in the next 2 months. thank you sir!

For those who made custom Moto X's, has any gotten the wood backs/ does anyone know how well they stand up to heat? (Up to 110°F and down to 40°F) Does the back warp or does it stay solid in its form factor?

How does it stand up to heat changes? Any warping?

Nope. Hardly a scratch though I use a leather pouch. Hardly heats up though. Only when playing games.

I can't speak for the X, but the Maxx is wonderful. I get like 8+ hours of screen on regularly over about 36 hours. I wish it had an IR blaster, but it's not a deal breaker. It's smoother than my S4 is. Especially when updating apps. The s4 will lag while doing that but the Maxx doesn't. Just my 0.02

The s5 may be difficult to root I'm guessing and development may be quiet. I'd get an unlockable x personally.
The s5 will be marginally better than the s4 and has touchwiz. Ewwww.
Plus the x can be got just over 300, the s5 will be 700+. Notttttt worth the price difference.
IMO.
I'll add this....Samsung, aside from camera, will never match the quality of the moto x.

The GSM/T-Mobile version -- Model # 1053 -- is also a attractive option. Its sim unlocked / unbranded / no bloatware and, unlike the developer edition, it can use the Moto Maker design options. I had both an AT&T version and the GSM version, and ended up selling the AT&T phone. The GSM received the 4.4.2 update weeks ago, but still waiting for the AT&T phone update. Can also tether on AT&T without any special AT&T plan.

Yeah know 2.0 might a deal breaker for some people. Helluva an upgrade for peeps coming from s3. Hardly an upgrade from s4. Does seem like it is highest quality galaxy s so far. The camera so far looms great in low light but can't vouche for it til consumers get it. Still kind of disappointing though. It better get spectacular battery life or something.

If you had to choose..

My sincere apologies if this breaks the rules of this community, but I'm stuck between three cell phones and I'm having troubles making a decision.
If you had to choose between these three smartphones, which one would it be? ANd please do explain your reasoning.
DROID MAXX)
HTC ONE (m7
LG G2
I would appreciate no bias. Thanks in advance.

How can you ask which one I would like and then say no bias. Its all bias. I like moto due to build quality and vanilla android also timely updates. HTC is horrible with updates. LG I have never owned one but both the m7 and g2 are heavily skinned that is not for me.

Well, since you are in the Droid Ultra (including Mini and Maxx) forum, the answer will probably universally "get the Maxx". Seriously, those were the same three choices last January when I got my Maxx.
is the battery life the most important one for you ? --> get the maxx
better build quality and feel ? --> get the htc one
lg g2 ? idk benefits of it sry, never had this device in my hands.
yes i would say get the maxx, but if you want better specs then you should go with the htc one or lg g2.
one problem of the g2 is, that it has a closed bootloader and it cant be unlocked, like the droid maxx (except the developer edition which costs more).
the htc one should be able to be bootloader unlocked, as long as htc didnt change their bootloader policy.
do you want to flash or stay at stock ?
stock:
lg g2 with a heavily customized android
htc one heavily customized
maxx nearly stock android
flashing/modding:
lg g2 locked bootloader, so big problems for flashing
htc one possible unlockable (at least the retail device without a carrier branding, but idk, as i am not in the usa and only buying retail phones)
maxx unlock possible only on dev edition (or older 2013 devices with a chinese guy)
I love the battery life of my Maxx, but it's noticeably more sluggish than my Nexus 7 tablet, which suggests its probably noticeably more sluggish than the M7 or G2.
The M7 is a great looking phone. HTC has been doing better lately with updates. The M7 on Verizon got the Sense 6 update ( with Android v.4.4.2) back in May. And, as far as custom skins go, Sense is actually pretty good. If you're not set on a near-stock experience, you might be really happy with Sense. My biggest concern with the One was battery life. The M7's battery life isn't anywhere near as good as the Maxx. The M8, on the other hand, is a big improvement over the M7 in terms of battery life. I'd be awfully tempted to get that one now, although I'd be even happier with a Google Play Edition M8 (if it worked on Verizon).
I'm not a big fan of the design (build quality or button placement) of the G2, or the OEM skin, but the hardware and battery life are nice.
I do understand the criticism here concerning my decision to ask this question here. The reason I did so however is because I also decided to go for the MAXX, and that is the phone I have right now.
Stupidly though, I decided to update to Android 4.4 and now am stuck without the ability to root the phone - at least for the time being.
I can't help but wonder though if I made the right choice. I still have time to go back and exchange it with a 35 dollars restocking fee. I compared it to with the LG G2, and the specs completely outperform the MAXX in every aspect. Even its battery is at the same league as the MAXX"s.
Does anybody else feel this way?
PS: Yes, I did lie when I said I have trouble making decision. I already did make the decision, it's just that now I'm feeling like I made a bad one.
i'll take the Lg G2
because, it has a relative good battery (3000mah) against the 3500 mah of Droid Maxx and 2300 mah of HTC one m7
Better processor than Droid Maxx and same as M7
Better camera than M7 and Droid Maxx
Bigger Screen than Droid Maxx and M7
Good design compared to Droid maxx and M7
Overall its better than the other two.
I made my choice for four main reasons - battery life ,vanilla android, build quality , and timely updates. The lg g2 is one of the most fragile heavily skinned phones in existence. If you look at it wrong (figuratively speaking) it can break. My girl has one , and she's been through four of them already. The HTC is not the way to go ... Any HTC I've had has never seen a timely update ever.

I'll second ChrisMaxx. I had an LG G2 for 3 months. It does have great specs. But I had to request a new unit due to MMS issues. Also, I missed (almost) stock Android. So I switched to the Droid Maxx, and couldn't be happier. I've found battery life to be much better on the Maxx than on the LG G2. Last, LG isn't good with timely software updates.

I would take the Droid MAXX anytime against G2 or M7. Cant compare the MAXX, an industrial piece of gagdet against some cheap ****.
The Maxx isn't about the specs... They're good enough. The Maxx is about the cool Motorola exclusive features like Touchless Controls, Trusted Bluetooth Devices, Active Notifications.
Last night I told my phone to set an alarm. I was across the room 8 feet away, the phone was screen off and I never had to touch it. There's no other phone you can do that with right now.

I have both the Maxx and G2. I'd get the G2 over the Maxx but with the G3 out, that should also be considered. You can't go wrong with either the Maxx or G2.The Maxx is for work and the G2 is personal. I only use the Maxx for work email when I'm home and tethering when I travel and get 3 days per charge when I'm not traveling. I day per charge when I do travel. My G2 gets 2 days per charge with light to moderate use and more widgets. I like the skin on the G2 and extra features it has. My previous personal phone was a SGS3 and my previous work phone was a SGS4. I've not regretted replacing either.

Had the g2, and the Maxx is better in every way aside from the camera. Obviously my opinion, but the vanilla experience with gravity box is just awesome. I get signal in places no other phone I've ever had would. Plus, my g2 had weird quirks and inconsistencies. This Maxx is just really usable, and I know for sure I won't spend hours tweaking trying to get to near stock android because I'm already there.

Is the LG G" still worth it?

Hi, I can't make up my mind. Should I buy this phone LG G2or should I go for a moto g 2015?
I don't like the G3 because it heats up insanely...
Thanks for the help.
Edit: sorry for my mistake in the thread title. It should be "Is the LG G2 still worth it?"

Coming from someone who owns both a G2 & Moto G, get the G2.
Moto G 2015 is a good phone no doubt but no match for the G2.
I was in the same dilemma a fee weeks back, if you're well versed in rooting and roming then definitely get the G2(that's what I did), has a more powerful processor, higher resolution display, bigger screen, better screen to body ratio, etc.
The only issue is the software, as I said if you want a good software experience you'll have to root it.

I'm planning to get one as a 2nd phone for work
The g2 is great to be honest I like it more then some of the phones that came out this year maybe because I get ROMs without ruining the phone or having hard flashing directions
The device itself is great, but be careful where you buy it from. Some people (myself included) have purchased 'frankenphones', devices that are made up of parts from different model G2's.
Thanks. I'm buying it from Amazon. Should be original.
Did you buy it in a Chinese store?

The 3rd Gen Moto G is a good phone as I've just bought one for a friend.
Even though my G2 is still running stock 20H KK 4.4.2, there is no way I'd swap it for a Moto G. Even though the G2 is 2 years old now, you can still see its a premium phone. Battery, Screen Quality, IR blaster, LED Notification Light, Battery.........
In 2 years time, some will still be rocking a G2.
Everybody is praising the lg g2. great.

I received my OnePlus 2 yesterday, but be sure I'll not give up G2 for now. Also Android M AOSP development started on G2, so I'll try to compile it for the G2.
So yeah, G2 is still a great phone.

Do you think that android m from the g3 will be ported to the g2?

I don't think so. If LG won't make Android M for G2 it will be rather hard to port anything.
