Swapping HDD on Pro version - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone, I would really appreciate if anyone would be able to confirm if there is a way to swap out the current 500GB for a 250GB SSD on my Shield Pro? Is there a way that maybe Clonezilla could be used? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm very interested in this as well. The shield with a 200+ GB SSD would rock

Not duplicate, the quoted article speaks about expanding the internal storage space of the 16GB version and using an SD to offload internal applications and/or games. What I am asking is for the possibility to swap out entirely the 500GB HD and putting in a 250GB (or any capacity SSD) in its place on the pro version. But from what I've read, the system does not pick up ANY HD that is not configured with the system partitions and file system as the original HD. Hence why my question is if anyone know how we could clone the original HD unto another drive.
Would you happen to have any ideas?
Thanks.

Very sorry. I linuked the wrong thread. Had too many pages open. I'll try to find the thread that I was talking about. It's about switching the 16GB version and installing a hard drive. Once they get the connector added to that model, than the steps will be the same. That's still a WIP.

Ok, AWESOME! If need be, I can volunteer. Do you know how difficult it is to pry open the SHIELD wihtout breaking the external casin? I haven't tried and wouldn't like to break it if I need a specific tool or something...

EDIT: Proper URL

That is the correct thread that I meant to post. We technically have 2 sections. Maybe try to post there to see if the guys that have opened theirs have any tips on doing so. It will void the warrenty, which I'm sure you know, but a notice must be stated before saying anything of the sort. Good lock, and I'm following that thread also, so I'll be sure to check back there or here if you quote my post if you need anything else that I can help with.

Thank you kind sir. No worries, I am fully aware that my warranty would be void, I've been with Android since the Moto Milestone days and I'm not afraid to play around. I may not have the coding skills, but I am quite obstinate when it comes to getting something to work.
I will head over to the other conversation and see if anyone has made any progress. If any mod wants to close this conversation down, please be my guest, I should have read it thoroughly before opening this new thread.

was the OP not good info? i didnt see the thread anywhere in the dev section and a XOOM sytstem dump seems like dev worthy material... i know i would have never seen it if it was not posted... i dont spend to much time in the HD2 section, only this one. i get that it was posted already in another section but isnt that why there are specific sections on this forum? otherwise the first post of the system dump would be packed full all the people with all the diffrent phones and tablets. and i know i dont go searching all the other subforum stuff for GTAB related info...
so off my soap box now... lol thanks for the find and for the post!! cant wait to see what this brings us!!
I've been mucking about with the system image, trying to get it to run, from a VEGAn base, not been successful so far. But my experience with ROM devving has been scant, to say the least
Basically I tried pushing the xoom system files straight on top of a VEGAn install, which ran out of space! Then tried just the xoom system, which fit, but rebooted to recovery and "erasing MSC" came up.
Then tried a mix of both, which had permissions errors (no +x on /system/bin), which when fixed, led to a reboot to recovery.
And then my lunch break was over, so I had to get back to real work Will do some reading tonight (Now + 4 hours or so), and a more thorough look at how VEGAn hangs together, and how stuffing a honeycomb /system into it will help us out.

Thats why I said the third thread posted today about the same thing. It has been moved from the development thread multiple times because its not development. Without a boot.img this system dump is completely worthless. There still files that are needed from nvidia that are not in this dump.

ah i see, i didnt understand your reply. So the system dump cannot offer anything from a dev standpoint over the SDK that we already have?

I didn't know the other two threads were moved? I was wondering why they were in the general section because like the OP I was unaware what was needed to cook or port a ROM.
This would have been nice to know right away.

If we had a boot img yes but by itself it doesnt do much. Sorry but as a regular user here at xda I get tired of seeing the same thread started over and over and its usually by n00bs who think they've discovered the wheel. I'm not putting you in that group as I can tell by your questions you are genuinely interested and are thinking before you post. I promise you that several of us have links to places where info shows up first and that as soon as there is a rom worth using it will be posted her as sticky for everyone to try. How they build a rom to NOOK without Boot Image
I know XOOM running Tagra 2. The first vision of SDK compatible for that Nooks processor. But however they run 3.0 on Nook. But now we have full system dump running on Xoom. Why we can't do like Nook guy's?
Because the Nook Honeycomb is made from a preview SDK without any optimizations made for Tegra 2. The Nook barely runs it.
We need a dump from a Tegra 2 device or access to the AOSP HC source library-neither of which are currently available.

Notice he said reading.....All I did was read for 2 weeks before I started posting and I havent started 1 thread. I agree that noobs need to ask questions but at least look for the answer first. If you end on the irc you will find I'm one of the first people to help someone. These constant new threads with the same subject matter are just cluttering up the forum and making it impossible for noobs to learn anything because the real information is buried in endless....THE HONEYCOMB XOOM DUMP IS OUT.....WHY DON"T WE HAVE A HONEYCOMB ROM YET!!!!!!!......threads. Or one of the 100 threads started asking how to install clockwork or a rom. Most questions can be answered in the sticky posts alone but no one wants to read. They want they info spelled out to them personally. This doesn't go for everyone but its certainly intended for the "honeycomb is on the Nook, why not on the GTab now that we have a system dump" crowd.

I agree on the need to read... I have read and read, I haven't asked because I was learning slowly about all things android. For me it is hard to ask questions for fear of being called a "noob" and told to "read and search". I appreciate what those who know have done for people like me.
Glad to see you did'nt leave frogman!
I'm very glad to see that everyone's excited, but this is not going to be an easy task, at least not for me (I can't speak for the other devs and modders of whom I bow to their collective genius).
A system dump is a start, but it's not the whole picture. It's like putting together a new bicycle that's sort of the same as the old kind, but with no manual and only half the parts. Trust me, I've already tried and for longer than you might know - so far no dice.
You want to help us out? If you plan to buy one of these tomorrow, try to root it and get us a boot.img. Or the unlocked bootloader. Or a full nvflash dump would be wonderful (that's how I got the Adam mod to work on a GTAB - not because I'm a genius but because I was darn lucky that NI was forced to release an nvflash dump). I'll even take an init.rc - anything would be appreciated.
But chants of "what don't we have a port yet?" over isn't going to help us at all (and you know who you are). Seriously, I would greatly appreciate it if you would please stop. Thanks in advance.

If anyone wants to know how to get a response in a speedy manner from elocity you need to leave a review on shopnbc.com they, its what I did in regards to my my thoughts about their service and needing to release kernel. and about a week later I had a response. Good news is kernel should be released soon.

What is this speculation based on? Hopefully more than the fact that you wrote them an email that began "your support sucks". I don't think that a gripe phrased in such an unprofessional way will elicit any sort of positive response. More likely it was just printed and used as a practice shot for someone's trash can free throws.
Hi
I got the same template e-mail from Elocity .
I noticed that altough the OS does not recognize the microsd card, I can access it with Root explorer on sdcard-disk0.
I still cannot move apps to the sd card ,it does not recognize it through apps2sd.
Help......

Please, enlighten me. I have read every one of your posts and nothing definitive has been said.
All of a sudden you are making claims that you "know" they will be releasing kernel source soon... I'd have to be an idiot to not be skeptical. So until a source is cited, I am calling BS

Edit: Ahh, I have a PM ... hold on reading now...
Edit Edit: Well, if whoever originally wrote that has anything to do with the people they have coding, I think we have just found out why things don't work lol.
I have met illegal immigrant maids with a better understanding of grammar and spelling. Hopefully we can trust the word of someone who can't even spell kernel.
On face value it looks promising, but we will see.
Thats how I feel it wouldn't be a programmer who would respond it would be a customer service person, but what they say in response would come from some where. Can't just make stuff up.
I sent in a new support request and asked if they could narrow down the kernel release date timeframe. I'll post if/when I hear anything.
I don't think any of that will be release until the a10 actually gets pushed out

SD card won't mount
Hi,
I don't know if anyone can help me or maybe I am posting this in the wrong thread. But my a7 used to read my usb drive and the sd card. Then suddenly it would not mount the sd card. I've contacted elocity support 3 times, and all they did was tell me to wipe. This is what I've tried:
- I tried formatting the sd card as 32 fat; didn't work.
- I tried a wipe; didn't work.
- I tried a new card; didn't work.
- Finally I applied Dexters 1.41 mod and even that didn't work.
The sd card always says "Preparing external storage checking for errors".
Any suggestions?
Thanks much!
Do you apply the vold patch with 1.41? Also you have to have a folder/directory sdcard/sdcard-disk (sdcard-disk) is the one needed. This still won't allow card to be read from boot other then applying zips with sysrecovery. It has been mentioned before in another thread if your not running elocitys FW you can't really complain about it to them.
If that folder/directory isn't created it won't read with the patch. USB also has something about it. Read up on this thread.

Also here is response from elocity I received only a day after emailing them.

What kind of lamery is this?

I'm trying to post a question on the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138051
For the Taboonay 2.2 rom and it says that I need to post 10 times elsewhere before I can ask my questions (paraphrased). This is lame!
How am I supposed to ask a question in a relevant thread and have my problem potentially fixed and have others see this problem fixed so it can help them as well? Is this not what forums are for?
This is a bit of a rant but I really need to figure out how to get my bluetooth working after I updated to 2.2 so does anyone have any idea how I can be able to post in that thread to get my (and potentially others') problem solved? Thanks.
dq
This is a tech question post. In the question forum.one more post from you will be 3 of 10 to be able to post in developers section.
This rule is to help keep non development related post from new members out of the forum.read forum rules is advisable ..
Enjoy XDA don't confront them.the rules are set in stone
Post here someone will help likely.
Good luck.
Well, Vache asks us to post in that thread if we need help so that's what I tried to do. I'll post something here-- it's still a lame rule and these arbitrary forum rules are really annoying though. I still can't get over the ones that filter-out three character (or less) searches. I mean, how else is one supposed to search for things like: pdf, etc, gui, kde, x86, ...? Anyway, I don't think these forums have this filter but I'm trying to increase my post count.
Thanks.

Giggles your close
in my opinion its a stupid rule. Im a long time reader and have lots of experince with roms / computers / programming and cant post to dev till ten post so spamming which defeats their purpose of trying to reduce spam
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
Rules are rules, I think the 10 post rule is to keep it sorta tidy in here, I was on one forum with little rules and it was fluded with crud.
I don't mind the rules ans love the search button.
I've got nothing to add.. just wanted to see my post count..
I for one don't know if it really is all that effective compared to perhaps a 1 week post restriction after initial signup. I read through the replies in the dev section and can understand why a dev would not revisit their thread. I could go spam several threads to get to 10, but why contribute to increased database size for no beneficial reason? I'm sure this view has been expressed before.
It's precisely BECAUSE of spammers that this rule was instigated in the first place.
No offence, but I think we seemed to have missed the point of this post, and that was to try and help this guy out with his bluetooth problem. Now since you have your 10 posts is it safe to assume that you have moved on to the taboonay post and asked your question there?
I think there should be more notice that you are limited for the first ten posts when you sign up. I'm quite observant, but also quick and to the point. I probably signed up in the least clicks possible and read only what I needed. Then I tried to post in the taboonay thread as well and got shut down by the forum.
Not saying it doesn't say it; but as I don't usually miss things, you might want to make that more clear.
I would *love* it if someone helped me with my Bluetooth problem. I posted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302082
and in the Taboonay thread but so far have had no bites... Guess I'm the only one with the problem or something.
Personally, I'd rather post in a forum or sub-forum rather than a thread that has hundreds of replies each having a different problem. It's kinda like having multiple conversations with one other person over chat. Anyway, vache asked us to post there so I did...
I also would love to figure out to keep the speakers muted when the headphones are plugged-in but it seems that I'm the only one having that problem too-- although maybe I'm not using the right searchwords...

This is probably little comfort, but if you're experiencing such issues with Taboonay, perhaps you should go back to stock? I'm running stock, I'm very happily running stock, although I am using Richard Trips kernel just so that I can overclock. Everything works fine on my tab...

What have you tried so far to resolve those issues? Personally i would do the necessary wipes of the usual things, then reinstall the rom and see if that fix the issues...To me almost all Rom seem moody, you can do every thing right and end up with alot of problems. Do the same thing again and they work without a prob...
I am running stock 3.2 only modified for Root with Thor Kernel. The min i pair my BT headphone or plug in head set, the sound on tablet speaker get muted. Also if you still having prob with the Rom after you have tried all possible solutions. I will advice you to try the stock 3.2. Its really fast and Zero problems so for.

SERIOUSLY?!? Is that the best you can do? How patronizing is that?!?! Tell me to search the forums and say that there are solutions to my problem but not actually help me by providing links etc.??? I know how to search forums and have been doing so for well over a decade. Why do you think my post count is so low!?!?!? I search forums!
Now, when I finally have a legitimate question that I can't find an answer to all I get from people is "search the forums".
You're right about a couple of things. Yes, there are questions about getting Bluetooth working in the Taboonay 2.2 thread but they are all fielded by *me* with no answers in sight! You're also right about the fact that there is probably an answer here in the forums-- but I can't find it so I'm asking for help!!!!
Seriously, telling me to search the forums and not providing any concrete help is more of a waste of time and space than actually re-posting a solution!
Sorry, if this sounds like I'm angry, but it's because I am. BTW, did you actually look at the Taboonay thread? You may have noticed about 50 people asking how to fix the market on the latest upgrade and multiple solutions re-posted. No one got after those people for re-posting the same question multiple times. Also, I didn't need to re-post a question about the market because it was there and I fixed it.
Now, it's my turn: if you're not going to be helpful don't post anything at all!!!

I tried doing a fix permissions in CWM and I tried re-installing TabletTalk. I haven't tried a full wipe yet but that's because I'm afraid to lose my stuff. I still need to figure-out a proper backing-up solution (which I haven't started to look into yet).
I'd prefer not to install a stock 3.2 if possible but I guess I could try that. I just want to make sure I stay rooted.

So, there's no Strat II forum, so I hope this is the right place. For those interested, I did a teardown and analysis of the chips on the Strat II mainboard.

If anyone has some tips on getting a USB jig to work with this thing or UnBrickable mod, I would be much obliged. Otherwise, it's a new board for me

Just wanted to say thanks for the tear down and corresponding link! As you know, there is VERY little development going on for our device and I'd love to hear anything else you may have to contribute on the subject, including if and how you may have managed to unbrick. Good luck!

Well, I'm not unbricked yet. I did find this thread the other day:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856327
Since we know the CPU on the Strat II is the MSM8960, this becomes VERY useful. I ordered a replacement main board the other day, so once it arrives I am going to run dmesg on it to find out if the USB controller supports the Jig. If so, it probably means we have the ICS bootloader (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402286). We'll find out when it gets here!
Unroot?
Hi, I was wondering if there was a way to unroot. I rooted with system.img.ext4, but now lost ability for wifi and bluetooth. In addition, I tried uninstalling something (system ui or something like that) and now lost the status (notification) bar at the top.
Is there a way to get it back to original image/rom? Please let me know. Thanks.

Verizon Xoom 1st gen, rooting and custom ROM

Hello folks,
Most likely, I am very very late to the party but here it goes.
My Verizon Xoom 1st gen (OS 4.2.2) has been working flawlessly. To be honest, waiting it to die to justify buying newer tablet to DW, but this darn thing just keeps working. Lately though, it has become atrociously slower. I reset to the factory defaults but after google updates stuff in the background, it becomes crawling slow.
I never bothered with rooting or custom ROM because it was reasonably OK to use. We use it primarily for reading pdf articles and YouTube, thats it. But now it has become really difficult to use. Hence I came here looking for rooting and custom ROM options.
I checked many threads last night and most of the links to the files required for rooting are dead. I am curious if there is anyone with a dump of these files that I could get my hands on.
At the end, all I care is that I should be able to use MoonReader Plus and YouTube. I am OK with other stuff not working, primarily cellular signal and stuff. Does anybody has an idea how I can proceed?
Many thanks in advance.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. I have downloaded. Hopefully everything is good. Feel free to delete.
I will make a step by step process and post here, just to make sure that I am doing everything right. I hope you (or other folks) won't mind confirming my process. I have rooted all my phones so I am not new to it but older Motorola's particularly do not go easy on me.
Thanks in advance.

Did those files work for you?
If so, do you the steps?
Thanks in advance!

Yes, they did. Not too sure what you mean by if I did the steps.

In your original above post you said "I will make a step by step process and post here", so I was wondering if you have had a chance to post the step by step instruction. If it is posted somewhere else, I would appreciate the link to that post.

My apologies.
A correction to my previous comment. Some of the files didn't work but I think whatever I tried/used I have uploaded on a Google Drive. If you want, I can link those files.
There was a lot of mix up. I was pretty frustrated. I was just flashing every file I could find on the web. So at the end, I myself don't know how or what I flashed that worked. Hence, I didn't post any steps.
I'm looking for details as well. Can you post the additional files from drive?

Would you happen to have those files still available?, I want to revive my tablet, it's useless at the moment and wanted the kids to enjoy some YouTube and some games.
What files are you looking for?
