Verizon Xoom 1st gen, rooting and custom ROM - Xoom General

Hello folks,
Most likely, I am very very late to the party but here it goes.
My Verizon Xoom 1st gen (OS 4.2.2) has been working flawlessly. To be honest, waiting it to die to justify buying newer tablet to DW, but this darn thing just keeps working. Lately though, it has become atrociously slower. I reset to the factory defaults but after google updates stuff in the background, it becomes crawling slow.
I never bothered with rooting or custom ROM because it was reasonably OK to use. We use it primarily for reading pdf articles and YouTube, thats it. But now it has become really difficult to use. Hence I came here looking for rooting and custom ROM options.
I checked many threads last night and most of the links to the files required for rooting are dead. I am curious if there is anyone with a dump of these files that I could get my hands on.
At the end, all I care is that I should be able to use MoonReader Plus and YouTube. I am OK with other stuff not working, primarily cellular signal and stuff. Does anybody has an idea how I can proceed?
Many thanks in advance.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. I have downloaded. Hopefully everything is good. Feel free to delete.
I will make a step by step process and post here, just to make sure that I am doing everything right. I hope you (or other folks) won't mind confirming my process. I have rooted all my phones so I am not new to it but older Motorola's particularly do not go easy on me.
Thanks in advance.

In your original above post you said "I will make a step by step process and post here", so I was wondering if you have had a chance to post the step by step instruction. If it is posted somewhere else, I would appreciate the link to that post.

My apologies.
A correction to my previous comment. Some of the files didn't work but I think whatever I tried/used I have uploaded on a Google Drive. If you want, I can link those files.
There was a lot of mix up. I was pretty frustrated. I was just flashing every file I could find on the web. So at the end, I myself don't know how or what I flashed that worked. Hence, I didn't post any steps.

I'm looking for details as well. Can you post the additional files from drive?

Would you happen to have those files still available?, I want to revive my tablet, it's useless at the moment and wanted the kids to enjoy some YouTube and some games.

What files are you looking for?

Keyboard Backround

Can anyone help me figure out how to change keyboard background?
I have looked through everything and must be missing it somehow...
Well we found the files, edited one to test but now when we reflashed the swype.apk, no virtual keyboard is installed. ADB pushed it, reflashed it, moved it to system/app... no keyboard shows up after only changing one image...
I am confused...
I basically need to figure out how to resign the apk after customizing and I am pretty noob right now..
You'll be better off asking this in the theming subforum.
I figured it out finally. It was me being dumb is all...

Would you mind contributing to the community and sharing the solution?
Sent from my mind using telepathitalk
Let me get it completely figured out first but then of course!!
To change it, you have to edit swype.apk and I have had to reflash 3 times now because I keep making little errors. It is kind of a painful process!
Well I finally got most of the editing done... I kept it pretty simple as far as the letters and I didn't really try hard with the placements on things because to be honest I wanted to throw the phone after awhile !
But here is a sample of what I did, if there is actually a demand for people wanting to do this then I will write a "how to" but I have to warn you it is painful and you will need experience with photo editing...
I changed the flame color in the background to be different for each mode.
And yes, Swype still works!
Consider this your first demand for a how-to.
Ha.. I will go ahead and get started on it then and post under themes/apps for everyone! I am not taking credit for doing it but I will write the how to for somebody to try.
Maddog and Illinois08 were the biggest help during the process so I will include them in the walk through.

[Q] Continuum 2.2 Update for Beginners?

I'm a noob when it comes to smartphones and android. My wife got this Continuum for free for me, and well I wish I would of known about it. I got this Friday and not knowing anything about Android, I thought I got a good deal, but soon realized after reading several forums up here there isn't going to be an official 2.2 release, but thanks to the kind folks here, there is a leaked version.
To my question, and I guess it's just me not being use to it, and trying to learn everything in a day, it's just not sticking. I would definitely want to upgrade to 2.2, but I'm lost. I understand the concept of it all, but like I said I'm lost. I haven't tried it yet, but do you have to root your phone first? Before you even attempt the update. I understand the concept of rooting a phone it basically gives you complete control over it, but is their a beginners guide?I guess I'm just lost although the leak was posted with great instructions it seems like a foreign language to a noob like me. Any help would be appreciated.

I was like you a week ago, lost, afraid, overwhelmed with information. But then, I found the search bar and now my phone has 2.2 on it. I don't really remember what happened, musta blacked out. Oh well... good luck!
Check out www.addictivetips.com/mobile and search rooting continuum. For that matter, read a lot from that site. It helped me a ton, and they put it in layman's terms

I got it running on my first try. It really isn't too hard once you grasp it. Thanks for all the help offered. And especially a big thanks to the people who brought 2.2 to the Continuum. At least it's not so dead after all. My Rom from pastorbennett runs perfect. I do have another question...would it be safe to download the My Verizon app. Even though it's a little aggravating, I do like being able to keep up with my usage, but if it's not advised I'll stay away from it.
I've been reading through a lot of the threads for loading Froyo onto my continuum, but am running into an issue that I have not been able to get past (or maybe I am being impatient).
I have the phone in debugging mode (only way Odin seems to pick it up)
I click the PDA button
Load the tar file
Click start
The process seems to begin, but gets hung up on SetupConnection and does not proceed from there.
Is there something I am missing? Not doing right?
This is my first Android phone and am still learning the terminology and so on. Any help would be appreciated.
EDIT - Figured out how to put the phone in download mode, everything moved right along. /facepalm

I'm glad you posted your fix. That might help others that read the thread. I guess it's a pet peeve of mine when I see a post that says, "Nevermind, I figured it out." And doesn't explain what they figured out, and how they did it... I'm just sayin'... Ya know!
Agreed, Moon Shadow.I've done several dozen searches, and clicked on promising links to someone who is having the same issue. The only resolution I see is "I got it". Which makes the search useless.

There should be CLEAR instructions in the OP of the Blackrose thread. This **** is ridiculous.
What do I need? Do I need the Android SDK? If I do, can I install it on a seperate drive? I don't need ****e clogging up my SSD. No one has stated I need the SDK, hence why I haven't bothered with it. If it is needed, then my point about none of it being CLEAR is reinforced.
Been trying to figure this **** out for hours. Seen countless numbers of posts with people trying to give instructions. I try these things to find that I have missed something because I can't complete a step or some other problem.
And did I mention how helpful the installation video was in the OP? Really good stuff, that.
Any actual help will be appreciated. Gonna jump off the nearest cliff if someone suggests to read through the thread again. Which seems to be the only thing that people like to tell others in these "help" threads.
Cheers.

No, you do not need the SDK installed. You do need the drivers for your device installed though, both for fastboot and normal mode.

Hours? When I got my first smartphone many years ago, I spend months lurking around this site trying to take in as much knowledge as I could before even attempting to flash anything. I wanted to make sure that I understood everything I was doing before doing it -- I did not want to blindly follow someone's step by step.

This is much more helpful. My apologies.
If I were the one creating these sorts of things for others (and myself,) I'd very much like it to be as simple as possible for the end-user. I'd like as much support as possible and I would be isolating the majority by making it more difficult than it could be. I shouldn't need a developer's knowledge to be able to take advantage of a developer's work.
I'm sure I just missed something simple. It wasn't the drivers. After I installed them and tried the Blackrose exe again, it stops at "waiting for device." Read through some of the thread, not understanding half of it, as you would expect, and didn't come across anything that could have helped me with my problem.
Any ideas?

I think what you posted above is where the problem is. People here are not creating things here for others. They are developing something, and sharing it with others.
And I guess, you didn't read the comment in the link in my previous post. Otherwise, it probably would have been more clear.
I'm not trying to insult. On the contrary, I am trying to help you figure it out, not have someone figure it out for you, in the spirit of xda-developers, not xda-support-desk.

lol, seriously?
There are 956 posts in the Blackrose thread alone. Expecting someone to read EVERY single post and absorb all of that information at one time is a bit proposterous. I'd bet it'd take a good 3-4 hours to just read that single thread.
I'm not saying we should spoon feed the newbs (especially the ones who can't follow simple instructions, like not posting a question in a forum with a big sticky at the top that explicitly says "WARNING - DO *NOT* POST QUESTIONS IN THIS FORUM - only tips/info/etc."), but at what point do we say... hey, this is how you do it, these 900 posts don't matter, or are outdated, or are duplicate questions...

I WAS being serious. Maybe it's just me, but I like learning, and I like helping those who like to learn. And don't tell me it's because people don't have time to read them...I work 60-70 hours a week, take post-graduate classes, raise 3 kids (which includes going to soccer games, homework, skating and dance lessons), and I still have time to read some threads, write up some guides, and help others.
If I want to flash something, I read the entire thread, so I learn from others' mistakes. When I had my Nexus One and I wanted Blackrose, I read every post in that Blackrose thread, up until I replaced the N1. I guess I have a hard time understanding someone who doesn't, and then complains that the guides should be better, and saying "this $%!& is ridiculous".
One of the things people need to develop skills for, if they're doing anything technical, is SEARCH. It helps a lot to filter out the crap, because it's indeed impossible or at least unreal to read threads of 300+ replies. But searching helps. Noobs should start working on their google-fu.
I agree that Blackrose thread isn't the simplest around. But just think - it's not more and not less, but bootloader replacement! The very thing that noobs SHOULD NOT TOUCH until they understand what they're doing.
So, the first response should be - if you don't understand how to do something, STAY AWAY UNTIL YOU DO. And indeed, go vent somewhere else. This isn't a forum for pleasing users.

[Q] First Timer Requesting Assistance

Thank you for this website and all the helpful information it provides. I was a long time apple user and was fed up with the ios so jumped on the bandwagon of android.
I rooted my phone it it a Telus i337M with the OTA update on it.
My question is what would the best stock to put on? I know it is a vague question ive been trying to do some research but i dont see anything that says it is compatible with the update that recently came out and I am a but nervous proceeding without expert advise. I like to have more battery life.
Id like to get rid of the bloatware as most probably do and TrulyClean 1.6 seems to be the choice. The installation is what baffles me.
If there is any information that i am missing that should be provided I have no problems with that.
Thank you again to who ever replies for your time. once i get the hang of this ill be happy to offer help to others who are in my shoes.
Too bad it your first post, best threads are frowned upon. Just try a couple of different roms and see what you like. Didn't people like different things. I've heard vision x is good.

Read the "pinned" threads in the general and Q & A sections. In them, you will find a list of available ROMs. Read the OPs of each ROM thread to see what they have to offer.

Some roms display "4G" in the status bar when you're connected to LTE. Do a speed test and see if your speed is less than it was before.

App That Roots The LG G6 H873? Any Hope Left?

I read not too long ago that the LG G6 H873 was rootable via an app that was developed, but the guy in charge got scared of the legality of the whole thing, and shut-down development. The post I read had a link to the app in question, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. If it's not too much trouble, would anyone mind sharing the link to the post, or the link of the app itself? Also, is there anyone working on achieving a root at the moment? I read a post, but OP seems to have gone dark for about a week now. I'd like to know if there's any hope left at all. Thanks for reading. A response would be greatly appreciated.

I finally found it! As the posts say, it's only temporary, and you must roll back to Android 8, but it's definitely something! I'll post the link to it below. Apparently, it works with the H873, and it runs well. Just follow the guide that one of the people posted. Hopefully, we'll be able to find someone skilled and motivated enough to unlock the bootloader through this. I'm going to respond to a few OPs that are still working on unlocking the bootloader/rooting the device with the link to help them. I wish anybody who tries this the best of luck. I'm going to try it myself soon. Thanks for reading.
