Wireless Charging meltdowns [Rev 1 hardware problem] - G4 General

UPDATE March 16th 2016
The new phone has been wireless charging fine. It has been over 2 months and still no "issues".
On my travel charger, about once an hour, it would freak out and stop charging. It was fine at home charging on my Nokia pucks.
However this warranty replacement has wireless network issues. It randomly just displays a message saying Network Disconnected... and when it's charging and reaches 100%, it starts to make this high pitched squeal. It wakes me up at night and I have to remove it, which defeats the purpose.
I have been super sensitive with QC 2.0 fast charging. I've used it a few times at home and in the car to give a quick boost, but never ever let it stay on a Fast charge for extended periods or overnight.
I think I am going to ask for a different phone from Verizon. Root and custom days are over for most carrier devices. I wanted to conclude this test.
UPDATE January 13th 2016
New replacement is fine. Called Verizon and found they are aware that Hardware Rev1 has a bad (abondoned) wireless charging chip and has been updated in Rev2.
Unforunately they cannot guarantee a Rev2 during a warranty replacement. So that sucks.
UPDATE January 11th 2016
The G4 is just screwed up. I am calling for another replacement. This time, NO Fast Charging at all. I think it has a bad chipset in them.
UPDATE January 9th 2016
My QI Charging completely died. Multiple batteries, Stickers, Chargers. Nothing. Qi puck wouldn't even turn on the charging LED at all. Absolutely dead. I have been using my QC 2.0 Fast charging at the house and in the car. Last night I charged off a 500mAh USB charger. And this morning it is Qi Charging just fine. I threw it on multiple pucks, multiple times throughout the day.
I think this concludes that it HAS to be a programming problem with the phone with QC 2.0 chargers and the power expectations of the input. I think it gets stuck in a rut after doing a QC 2.0 Fast charge and receiving the super fast charge. Afterward I think the Qi's lower power output, the phone thinks it is a bad connection and rejects it. It will either attempt to make a connection (cycles on, off, on, off, on forever) or just nothing at all.
I will continue testing this. At this point it is charging fine. I will refrain from using any fast chargers and see how long it lasts before freaking out again. After a week, I will fast charge and see if I can "break" it and "fix" it. Perhaps it just needs a good overnight of a 500mAh slow charge to "reset" it's database or something.
UPDATE January 1st 2016 Happy New Year
I can't figure out the Wireless Charging on this phone. I bought a LG Qi Circle Case. Still having issues. I went back to the stock back + my Rev.2 Qi Sticker.
It is still wonky. It was working for a while, then got worse and worse. It seems to have something to do with Quick Charging and wireless charging.
I think the phone has some weird bug where it gets used to the super fast quick charges and expects a specific amount of power, but then when you throw it on a slower Wireless Charger later, it still expects the same high inputs of power and just, maybe, keeps cutting the connection hoping for a better one.
I DID prop up my Qi Sticker charging tabs with a small roll of tape and it seems to be holding fine for now.
This really sucks. Between the Touchscreen issue, Qi Issues, and locked bootloader... I think this might be my last LG device.
UPDATE December 1st 2015
Still goofy. A factory reset seemed to help but it is iffy at best. Works perfect sometimes. On, off, on, off, no problem. Other (most) times just starts and stops constantly.
It seems now it'll charge for 5-10 minute before it starts getting wonky. Starts and charges for a while, then freaks out. Start, stop, start, stop, etc.
I woke up this morning with 43%.
I think the phone is faulty. I plan on swapping it via carrier warranty. Who knows if that's a good solution but my original G4 charged great after a few weeks of "breaking it in". It was wonky for a few weeks but ironed out and worked for months. My 2nd replacement phone worked for a few weeks and then stopped.
UPDATE November 14th, 2015
The initial success proved to be a fluke. At this point I factory Reset and now it is charging better.
Prior to the factory reset, I ordered a new V2 sticker. So that is 3 different stickers, 3 different batteries, and multiple Qi Chargers. All performed the same. As a last resort before replacing the device, I factory reset via Recovery (VolumeDown+Power on boot). I tested prior to doing any setup and it was working as it should. I even tested with the other stickers and batteries now charge normally after a factory reset.
So my initial conclusion went out the window. How a software reset could affect a hardware issue as simple as charging is beyond me. The only thing I can think of is a meltdown of some process. Typically reports (and even in my case) is that it typically works for about a month before it breaks down. Time will tell.
I have a Verizon VS986 btw. We are running on older 11A (latest) firmware. This may be something that gets patched out in other variants... hopefully.
UPDATE November 10th, 2015:
My Tests show it is the battery that causes the constant start/stop/start/stop > over heating > lockups
If you have a promotional or extended battery, try using that one. I have 2 LG G4s (1 replacement), 3 batteries, 2 Qi Backs, several Qi pucks. My issue/lockups/crashes/aggravation was only when I used my ORIGINAL OUT OF THE BOX BATTERY.
The Promotional Battery and the Out of the Box Battery are different. They have the same model number but different markings and text layouts. I think they are 2 different batteries. I think the included battery is faulty in some cases. I NEVER had any problems charging via hardwire though. Only Qi.
My theory is that the ORIGINAL battery just wasn't getting enough juice via the Qi charger to allow a charge. It sees the initial connection, but drops it for some reason and retries. This is why I think some pucks work better than others. Users have reported changing to a "higher quality" puck stopped the nightly reboots/lockups. Perhaps it was sending MORE power, enough to keep a steady charge flowing.
Where the PROMOTIONAL and Extended battery are normal and just take what they can get.
Makes sense right!

Original Post:
There are several Wireless Sticker threads and an issue that comes up is that while charging overnight, the phone freaks out and locks up. You can see the launcher icons, but the background resets to default and crashes constantly to a black background over and over until it resets. The problem is random and doesn't happen every night. Some times it happens multiple times a night. It seems there is an issue with the G4 ONCES it reaches 100. Possibly the constant "re-up" to maintain 100% is triggering some service meltdown. It is very odd. We have found that different chargers yield different results. I know some of the cheaper Qi pads will not trickle charge and just turn off after 100% (you wake up with 78% battery). Others have found different stickers have been the culprit. Some speculate the curve of the device causes the coils to not receive a constant charge (creates variances in mAh).
Something is causing it. I figured a dedicated thread to get to the bottom of it would help spread awareness and help get to the bottom of it.
All Wireless Charging users are encouraged to participate but posts such as "mine charges just fine" is not helpful here. So I want to try and stick to a format:
Code:

[b]Sticker or Official: [/b]
[b]Qi Charger: [/b]

For me:
G4 Model: Verizon G4

DPI: 540 or 560 (can't remember but I changed it)
Alarm Usage: Used Daily for 7:30am

Sprint G4
Yootech circle case with qi
Yootech puck
Nova launcher
Alarm set to 6:00, 6:30, 7:00 daily.
Dpi = stock setting
What I've noticed:
If I allow the phone to charge to 100% and use it for a bit but not allow charge to dip below 100%, then set it back on the puck (cuz i just wasn't done sleeping yet)... This is when I noticed a hot phone and it freaked out.
The following night, I cleared all apps before setting on the puck and never removed it. Woke up to a normal phone.
Following night I did NOT clear apps but left it on the puck all night. Woke up to a normal phone.
Have not been intentionally been able to duplicate a hot, freaked out phone.
Hope this helps.

This sounds something like a voltage issues seen when using off branded (i.e., ebay) batteries or inferior charging cables. Both can be found to routinely cause phone freak out, lock up, jittering, etc. Just a piece of info to drop in to consider.

Nope. Tried 3 charges and still lockup.

I think one parameter might be the way the charger is plugged. Even with a very good pad, if not using wall plug but some lower voltage source like usb plug on appliances (computer/TV/console/...) the charging often goes on and off, probably due to the non flat back of the phone. The type of back (leather or plastic) may play a role here too.
I'm wondering if the instability of the charging could make the phone go crazy?

Oh so all chargers lock up. I read your post as 3 chargers and no problems.
I have tried replicating the issue with no luck. Someone said they think it is when it reaches 100% and still charging. Perhaps the on/off behavior of the charger top off? One night I woke up at 3am and it was locked up, rebooted, threw it back on the charger, and woke up at 7am it was locked up again.
Hopefully now there is a root process we can get some more information.
For me, it typically locks up 3-5 days a week.

Now this may help, I was at work, trying to charge my phone before I left to get the train home, to make sure I had plenty of charge to last the journey. It was charging, using a cable, for about half an hour, and was just quite hot, but the percentage wasn't increasing... (when I charge, I make it practice to just put on charge, and leave it alone, screen off, in order to get the quickest charge possible)
Never happened before, or after that. But maybe this isn't just related to the wireless charging, maybe there is a scenario with a particular app or something that is causing this to occur, rather than the fact its wireless charging?
I haven't had any issues with my QI charger though, although for now I'm not using it anymore, as I've gone back to the standard battery cover, and am awaiting a QI sticker in the post (couldn't get along with the quickcircle case, the flaps drive me mad)

G4 Model: H815 (EU)

Have experienced 3 times that the phone is set to charge at bed time and then is around 95% battery in the morning, still on the charger. Launcher has crashed and all I see is a black screen. Then some kind of reload and my wall paper is back to default, for some reason..
Edit: After changing charger, both NeWisdom sticker & QuickCircle CFR-100 case both works fine.

That is typical Konstigt
I used a different launcher last night, Acrion Launcher 2, and it was crashed this morning. Default wallpaper, black screen, same as above.
I am not sure it is a downloadable app, but a stock background app maybe. The reason I dont believe it is a 3rd party app is because it will lock up on a freshly rebooted phone with no apps running.

G4 model: H811 rooted

Only problem have is finding the sweet spot on charger to get it charging, sometimes takes minute or so to get going but other than that no lock ups, etc. Also phone is at 100% after being on all night.

I installed the upgraded NeWisdom sticker a couple weeks ago, and I've been charging wirelessly each night since then. I have yet to experience any lockups. It does get hotter and charge slower than my previous phones that used OEM wireless charging backs (Galaxy S5, Note 4) or came with wireless charging built-in (Droid Turbo) when using the same wireless charger.

The only thing I haven't tried is a different charger. I really want to keep using my Nokia puck because it works very well and easy to just throw down.
I am getting really annoyed by this Qi crap.

G4 Model: H815 (EU)
Sticker or Official: fonesalesman Sticker from Amazon.de
Qi Charger: Nokia DT-900, LG WCD-110, EasyChee T900
Launcher: Stock / Nova
I've had several crashes during wireless charging from beginning on. I've ordered a qi-sticker from fonesalesman along with the phone and put in on since it arrived. It crashed on day one with stock launcher and nearly no settings made. And it still chrashes after I configured all apps and using nova as launcher. Also tried different chargers...
Today I could watch it crash in the office. The phone went up to 100% and the charger (EasyChee T900) stopped charging for a moment. After a while it changed from no charging to charging in an arbitrary rhythym. One moment it charged for 1-2 Minutes, then no charging for 30 seconds, then charging again for a couple of minutes. Sometimes in between it changed states several times within 30 seconds... As I wanted to check I had the same symptom you all got.

Yeah this is the problem. I guess we just wait for a custm rom to see if the problem can be fixed.
Anyone able to grab a logcat? Maybe there is some app that monitors the qi charge and freaks out.
Anyone running a custom rom able to test this? I saw an AOSP rom in development. Hopefully it isnt a kernel issue.

Aha, my HTC chargers output was only 1.0A and my LG WCP-300 should have a 1.8A input. Changed to the stock LG G4 charger to feed my WCP-300 and now I have not seen the issue again. I have also changed to a CFR-100 QuickCircle case.
So good charger + QuickCircle = no problems.

I use a Nokia Puck which has a barrel plug. I am assuming the included adapter would run at the proper specs. I haven't tested amperage. But you have problems with the sticker but not with the CircleCase? I am curious if you believe it was the power problem or the sticker problem (or both)

Anyone here have their wireless charging stop working completely?

Charging Issues; Need advice

Hello,
First off I want to preface this by saying I have my bootloader unlocked, rooted, running a 6.0.1 ROM.
This past weekend I noticed that my phone wasn't charging on a generic 4 port USB charger that I have. Made sure it had power, tried it on my tablet I had laying around, and eventually got it to charge using a different cable. No problem, stuff like that happens. Noticed it was "charging slowly" Hmm..wonder if the USB charger is going back. Tried it other places, but always getting EXTREMELY slow charges. Unfortunately I had my OEM charger at work at my desk so I couldn't try that but I have a QuickCharge 2.0 car charger that I tried. I plugged it in there and I was actually LOSING charge at what seems like a faster rate than just a normal drain. WTF!?
Got to my destination (going to my buddy's house) and tried a few of his chargers; same thing, "charging slowly". Made it through the weekend, got home and the problem is still going on with all my chargers.
So today, I get to work to try my OEM quickcharge and it drains my battery as well! Oh boy. This is bad.
Anyone else experience this? Since I've unlocked bootloader and no extended warranty AND the fact that Moto Support is god awful anyway, I'm screwed when it comes to professional help. Anyone have luck opening up this beast and fixing anything? Any help or guidance would be very much appreciated.
My phone isn't charging very well either. I went out to do some errands and phone was on 84% saying it'll be charged in 35 minutes I came home three hours later it's still on 84% with 35 minutes to go and burning up to touch. This is already my fourth Moto X in the week.

Not the same charger but all four different chargers the phone comes with. I ordered it on Amazon with next day arrival and the first two phones had dead pixels third one was reading 138 degrees with ampere while charging and would stop and fourth (current) refuses to charge past 84% unless I have the phone off I noticed. I unlocked the bootloader on this current one though so I don't think I'll be able to exchange it now

Question to OP: DId you ever find a resolution? I have recently noticed that my XT1575 (currently restored to stock 6.0 but still unlocked) actually LOSES charge while "charging" (as reported in Battery setting) in my Car (12vDC) and on my motorcycle (12vDC). Granted, I am running GMaps and streaming music running, among other apps... In fact, I just saw the charge drop from 74% to 68% in about 15 mins while driving this morning... On the other hand, when plugged into AC Turbo charger, I can run all those apps and then some, and charging, the battery charge goes up 1-2% per minute... Wondering if anyone else has seen similar issue when charging via DC current?

now that I think about it, its DC going into the phone regardless of the source, so the type current is not a factor... so assuming I don't have bad cables, what could be causing the difference?

Upon further research I just discovered and ordered a Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 capable car adapter... I'll bet the "standard" usb power the phone can draw from a cheap car adapter isn't sufficient to effectively charge on top of streaming, GPS mapping, Bluetooth stereo and screen on... Lets, see what the new 2.0 QC adapter can do next week....

I've noticed issues with the charging port. I have two brand new 25w turbo chargers and neither of them connect/charge my phone. I got an OEM USB cable and connected it to my old Droid Turbo charger and that is the only charger that works for me. Bummer. Was considering sending back the phone to moto, but I'm unlocked and have a feeling they would not repair/research it...

You can download an app called "Ampere" it will actually show you the charge and discharge rate that the phone is doing. Might help out in determining what is wrong.
For those experiencing issues with the device not charging to 100% when it is extremely hot, this is normal behavior. This is from Motorola...
Some facts on battery temperature
* Devices need their space; There are no on-board fans, cooling relies solely on the device being able to dissipate heat through the air. To help cooling, ensure the device is not in a pocket, purse, carrying case, or direct sunlight.
* Normal temperature is (97f) ~36c
* A user will begin to sense a “warm” device at 106f (~41c) and it will seem hot at 109f (~43c)
* Cool Down Mode kicks in at 152f (67c)
* Batteries with temps => 113f to 140f (45c to 60c) will not charge to 100% capacity
* Battery temps >140f (60c)will not charge at all

Brand new G4 Play Battery Issue

I bought a brand new unlocked Moto G4 Play from.Amazon Prime last week. Between purchasing it on Prime and the phone being old and OOP I got a great deal. However, I'm having a couple issues.
The first is with the battery. It charges insanely slow. Yesterday morning I had it plugged in for 3+ hours and it only charged 70%, from 15% to 85%. Also, for a battery rated at 2800mAH, it seems to drain fairly quick. Is it possible that the battery lost some of it's power while sitting around in the Amazon warehouse for so long?
My second issue is with file transfers onto my Mac. This is the third Android phone I've owned and it's the first to.cause my computer to freeze up when connecting it via USB. The charger that came with the phone is just one piece, I.e you can't disconnect the USB cable from the outlet plug. I had rummage around for a USB cable to use. It's an old cable, so I think that's what could be causing my.computer to.freeze. I'm gonna buy a new USB cable today and hopefully it fixes the problem.
Getting back to the battery, is there an app the can analyze my battery? So I can find out if it's defective or just not running at 100%? Any other suggestions on what I can do to remedy this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam
As far as apps go you can check the Play Store, and go by rating to see what is best for you. I use this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fsinib.batterymonitor
Charging with the stock charger will take hours. It's only rated at like 527 mamps (or whatever it's called), but it will never charge fast. I use a 2 amp quick charger, and from around 20% to 100% it takes just about an hour.
The drain may be because it's new, and getting settled in, so it should get better after a bit of time. Plus it does take a couple charge cycles to reach its full charging potential. I get an easy 5 1/2 to 6 hours screen on time on a full charge.
Now for using a computer I don't have experience with Macs, but I have heard issues with Android and Macs not playing well together. Maybe newer/better cable will help.
I've used 3C Battery Monitor Widget.
Like said above, the charger that comes with it is very low power, you can charge faster with a 1 - 2 amp charger and it won't hurt anything since there is built-in circuitry in the phone to control charging.
When I first got my G4 Play, I charged it up and let it sit unused for about 2 weeks only checking the battery remaining periodically and it still had ~15% left after 2 weeks on standby.
If your battery doesn't get better, you may want to exchange the phone with Amazon before your return is up.
G4 Play XT1607 Battery Drain
I'd like to revive this post real quick. @adam79 did you get your issue figured out?
I bought a phone from eBay. Ok, a bunch of them. I'm buying broken, fixing, and selling. I have hovered around G4 Plays as that is what I learned with and am slightly comfortable with. This new issue has got me stumped though.
Moto G4 Play - listing stated 'will not power on or charge'. No problem, I have extra parts. I tried to plug it in and sure 'nuff, no power. Tried another battery and she fired right up with Marshmallow already reset. I replaced the charging board and it started charging but it was hot. Hotter than normal I thought. Said that it would take 3 hours to fully charge from 71%. Whatever. She wanted the update to 7.1.1 just like the two xt1609s, the other two xt1607s, and my recent xt1601. I let it update then turned it off. Battery was dead the next morning. Plugged it up and no charging animation appeared. Another battery and it fired up. The heat is coming from the metal plate just above the battery contacts. Drains the battery no matter if it's on or off. What could it be?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

2 month old ZTE AXON 7 won't quick charge anymore.

My phone is two months old and has ceased to quick-charge. Actually, 90% of the time, it will only charge when powered down. I use the factory charger and cable but get a message that I need to use the original charger and cable. Catch 22?
I bought it at Best Buy so I took it back to them this evening. My charger is fine as is my cable. Best Buy confirmed that my issue is a factory defect and politely sent me on my way. I take care of my phones if nothing more than the fact that I've had to replace micro USB ports in the past. The weird thing is that when it charges powered down, it seems to refresh to full battery very quickly.
Has anyone else had similar issues? If in fact, I do have to deal with ZTE, what has been members experience?
Thank you for letting me vent.

If charger works as it should then u need to test your phone with multimeter to see how much current it draws while phone is powered off without charger (battery only).
But that means you need to open 2 month old phone which i dont recommend if u have warranty.
Axon 7 draws about 2.66-2.68 amps while in quick charging mode. Volts i forgot but i think it was 6v. I'm not in shop at the moment so i cant know exactly.
But for amps i remembered.
Wallor77, thank you for your reply. My charger is in good working order. In fact, I have several 2.0 and 3.0 chargers. They all work fine on my Samsung Galaxy Note Edge. The Samsung displays "Fast Charger Connected" on the lock screen.
Now my ZTE Axon 7 will not charge while it is powered up. As soon as I turn it off, it charges just fine. This is really annoying!

If your charger and cable are OK, perhaps have you recently installed an application which limits the power. Such methods exists in some antivírus to preserve the health of the battery. It's just an idea.

Same thing there. If it charges normally while power off u need to see how much amps. USB volt amp reader is a good little device. I recommend for everyone to get one. It cost about 15 bucks. From there it's all about elemination process to diagnose proper issue

I second this. But $15?! You can get them for about $5 on aliexpress!
U have USB volt amp reader with both volt units, amp units, time duration and mAh over time charged value. But 15$ was about avarage price listing. I'm sure there is cheaper as well.
UPDATE: 6/2/17
I ended up sending my phone to the ZTE repair center in TX. It took about 3 weeks to get it back. There was no explanation of what was repaired and I received my original phone; not a refurbished one. All I know was that it was covered.

I am in the process of returning my 3rd Axon to ZTE. 2 of them have had this problem. It's definitely known because when I was talking to them and told them what was happening they just kind went "yeah ok" and fast tracked the whole thing. Thank god for this warranty, their quality control is ****e.
anyone noticed that occasionally it stops charging?

Last night, mine started doing this. It goes on and off about every two seconds. What's weird is it only does this with the quick charger. it slow charges when connected to a PC usb just fine. Its not the OEM charger either since my wife's quick charges just fine with the exact same charger.
Guess I'm going to have to call ZTE....
Mine suddenly stopped quick charging - I have 3 different chargers that work fine with other phones except for this one. And chances of all 3 of them going bad at the same time are slim to none. Tested different cables as well, but again same result. It charges with normal speed even when connected to QC3.0. Tried wiping cache. I think it's no different if I turn the phone off. Think it might be time to move on. Had it since December 2016, so I guess it's nearly 2 years old now. Still shame.

Quick update. Swapping batteries (OEM) hasn't helped. I wonder if this is software or hardware related
Let me add to this thread. I'm also not getting quick charge anymore for maybe a month already. Tried different cables, booting to safe mode, etc. There are few instances where i see quick charging but very rarely. I was thinking it's my usb port but I haven't opened my phone yet to verify.

Really slow charging after battery upgrade.

Hi
Just put in a brand new battery and the phone will not go into turbo charge. Best I can do on any charger is about 500mAmps. Battery will barely hold it's own when the display is on. Let me go through the specifics:
Battery was acting erratic (random shutdowns, short life) and was replaced with a labeled Motorola branded battery. I believe it was charging in turbo mode before replacing, but it was so erratic I can't say for absolute certain. No drama on the installation, it went very smooth.
Battery capacity is now great. The random reboots stopped.
Charging is very slow, less than .5amps. It says that it is charging off a USB port. It does not give the turbo charge message.
Tried four different quick chargers (2.0 and 3.0) and a few different cables. Also tired it on a 2amp USB charger. At least two cables were brand new. All the same.
Cleaned out the USB port on the phone. Thorough cleaning a couple of times, not much junk out came out. Also tried some alcohol to clean the contacts. The connection feels tight and has positive lock. No help from that.
Factory reset. No help.
It has had a couple full charge/full discharge cycles. No difference in charge rate.
I have a USB detector that I can plug into the charger and run the charge cable out of it to the phone. It shows 5.2volts and about .4 or .5amps. Doesn't show the high voltage charge (about 8volts if I remember).
One thing that is funny is the charge rate as reported from Ampere. It first reports 1-1.5 amps initially and then goes back down to .5 amps. I suspect it is Ampere acting funny, not the phone. The USB detector does not show the initial high current. There might be a clue in there somewhere.
The phone is running stock Nougat and is not rooted. I am beginning to think it may be a software issue.
Any ideas?

It could be the battery. Buying batteries has seemed to be trial and error for this phone. Where did you buy the battery from?
I know that problem with batteries. It's like a 50/50 chance of getting a decent one. I seem to have found a pretty good one. It was off Amazon, but it was branded Motorola. It says so right on front, if that is worth anything. It charges (just very slowly) and has great life. The phone used to do random reboots on the old battery, that is cured. I am inclined to think it is not the battery. Is there some specific check that you know of that would rule it out?
Thanks for the idea.

Fit the old battery again, if it turbo charges then the problem is the new battery.
good idea.

That was a good idea. I gave it try but it was still in the awful slow charge mode. But that old battery was junk, no life and random reboots. Based on the condition of the battery, that may not have been a great test I will just button it up one last time and recharge it every night. On the plus side: Life on the new battery is as good as when the phone was new. That is a very nice phone and I would buy another new one if they were available.
Thanks for the idea
John
