2 month old ZTE AXON 7 won't quick charge anymore. - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

My phone is two months old and has ceased to quick-charge. Actually, 90% of the time, it will only charge when powered down. I use the factory charger and cable but get a message that I need to use the original charger and cable. Catch 22?
I bought it at Best Buy so I took it back to them this evening. My charger is fine as is my cable. Best Buy confirmed that my issue is a factory defect and politely sent me on my way. I take care of my phones if nothing more than the fact that I've had to replace micro USB ports in the past. The weird thing is that when it charges powered down, it seems to refresh to full battery very quickly.
Has anyone else had similar issues? If in fact, I do have to deal with ZTE, what has been members experience?
Thank you for letting me vent.

U can test your charger using USB volt amp reader on another phone which supports quick charging.
If charger works as it should then u need to test your phone with multimeter to see how much current it draws while phone is powered off without charger (battery only).
But that means you need to open 2 month old phone which i dont recommend if u have warranty.
Axon 7 draws about 2.66-2.68 amps while in quick charging mode. Volts i forgot but i think it was 6v. I'm not in shop at the moment so i cant know exactly.
But for amps i remembered.

Wallor77, thank you for your reply. My charger is in good working order. In fact, I have several 2.0 and 3.0 chargers. They all work fine on my Samsung Galaxy Note Edge. The Samsung displays "Fast Charger Connected" on the lock screen.
Now my ZTE Axon 7 will not charge while it is powered up. As soon as I turn it off, it charges just fine. This is really annoying!

If your charger and cable are OK, perhaps have you recently installed an application which limits the power. Such methods exists in some antivírus to preserve the health of the battery. It's just an idea.

Same thing there. If it charges normally while power off u need to see how much amps. USB volt amp reader is a good little device. I recommend for everyone to get one. It cost about 15 bucks. From there it's all about elemination process to diagnose proper issue

I second this. But $15?! You can get them for about $5 on aliexpress!

U have USB volt amp reader with both volt units, amp units, time duration and mAh over time charged value. But 15$ was about avarage price listing. I'm sure there is cheaper as well.

UPDATE: 6/2/17
I ended up sending my phone to the ZTE repair center in TX. It took about 3 weeks to get it back. There was no explanation of what was repaired and I received my original phone; not a refurbished one. All I know was that it was covered.

I am in the process of returning my 3rd Axon to ZTE. 2 of them have had this problem. It's definitely known because when I was talking to them and told them what was happening they just kind went "yeah ok" and fast tracked the whole thing. Thank god for this warranty, their quality control is ****e.

Last night, mine started doing this. It goes on and off about every two seconds. What's weird is it only does this with the quick charger. it slow charges when connected to a PC usb just fine. Its not the OEM charger either since my wife's quick charges just fine with the exact same charger.
Guess I'm going to have to call ZTE....

Mine suddenly stopped quick charging - I have 3 different chargers that work fine with other phones except for this one. And chances of all 3 of them going bad at the same time are slim to none. Tested different cables as well, but again same result. It charges with normal speed even when connected to QC3.0. Tried wiping cache. I think it's no different if I turn the phone off. Think it might be time to move on. Had it since December 2016, so I guess it's nearly 2 years old now. Still shame.

Quick update. Swapping batteries (OEM) hasn't helped. I wonder if this is software or hardware related

Let me add to this thread. I'm also not getting quick charge anymore for maybe a month already. Tried different cables, booting to safe mode, etc. There are few instances where i see quick charging but very rarely. I was thinking it's my usb port but I haven't opened my phone yet to verify.

[Q] fast charging issues!!!!!

soo my issue is the fast charging.
first few days it was fast charging everything worked fine after that it stoped fast charging. when i plug it in it dosent show "fast charge connected" insted it shows " usb ".... so i thought something wrong with the cable so i changed it.... so i changed just the cable not the plug works fine. my first thought is that the cable is broken or something,
1. can that be true that the cable is not proper build?
2. does it affect anything that i charge my phone with an older cable?
Just double check under settings, power settings, fast charging is still checked. Once I accidently uncheked it.

no no the fast charging is checked.... like i said with the cable that came with the phone fast charging is not working...... other cables yes everythings normal
That's odd because the cable has nothing to do with it. Maybe your stock cable has been damaged.
I don't know it's confusing to me too. because the first two days it was working great after that It's not fast charging . maybe my cable was bad made!! but fast charging is working with another cable l have from my old s3 !

Also does it affect something on my battery that im using an old cable for fast charging???

How do you know of fast charging is working? Thought the screen had to be off?
Yes the cable will affect fast charging. Fast charging only works with cables of certain gauge (thickness). You must have damaged your cable, or it was already damaged before you got it. Don't worry this has no effect on the battery, no degradation.

ok so the cable could have been already damaged...... the thing is when i fast charge it with the other cable it charges the same time as the cable that came with the phone.... i also noticed that i get the same battery life also...... sooooo i there must be no harm at all right????
rapid charging multiple issues
My Note 4 did the same thing: 1st charge worked great, then it started showing connected to the RC, but unable to charge and flashing LED. Sometimes it still charges okay (not rapid) and sometimes really crawls. The "not able to charge" plops up every few minutes. Word was that there was a chord issue with the OEM and that they were fixed, but replacing the ones that were shipped already with a problem. That didn't fix my issue. The new word is that it's a device issue in some cases. For me, it does appear to be the device since I've done a FDR and tested multiple chargers, chords, OEM and carrier options. Contacting Samsung today as a DOA device. I'll let you know what happens. :fingers-crossed:

If you are hooking it up to a computer to charge, you will not get fast charging. It has to be plugged in with the power plug only to get a fast charge.

I got a replacement device by warranty and it's charging exactly as it should. All of my cables and plugs are working.
Wow...it's fast...faster than expected even! I'm loving the new Note, now! Just one of those things that happens sometimes.
Good luck with getting yours working. I should think it would be covered by the warranty.
Happy holidays to you and yours!
replacement
How long did it take to get a replacement? Had my phone for almost a month now and its very on /off with the charging. When i first got it it showed fast charger connected and got 50% charge as advertised in half an hour. Now it will, if im lucky charge maybe 10% in an hour. Just now, went to bed with 13%. 5hrs later it got to 32%. Havent tried a different cable and plug combo yet.

Another thing to check, make sure the standard usb end is snug in the charging adapter. Mine wasn't fast charging, but it was slow charging (I think - showed lightening bolt in battery icon) and then I pushed the usb into the fast charging wall adapter a little more and it resolved the issue
Hey, I was wondering if you're still experiencing this problem; I have the same model number & have the same problem.

I've had my Note since December last. It was fast charging just fine for about a month then I noticed it became sporadic, then it went to slow charge after that, then stopped charging altogether.
I changed the cable and it started to fast charge again for about a month and the same thing happened. It just deteriorated over time until it stopped charging.. So this is what I've been doing since. I'm on my third cable now. I've been wondering if the higher voltage etc, that enables the fast charge feature breaks the cable down. Just a thought:confused.
I had the same issue when I just got my note 4 a few months back. It turn out to be the charger that is causing the problem. I went to the service centre (in Singapore), the reception told me it is a common problem with the charger. Had it changed and the problem solved.

Fast charging issue

Hi guys,
I recently brought a new Note 4 two weeks ago and its awesome, but 2 times this week now I've stuck the phone on charge to get a boost & the fast charge facility has not kicked in.. meaning its only charged about 20% in 30minutes.
If I restart the Note it seems to correct itself but it is a bit frustrating that the phone is less than a month old and 1 of its main selling points isn't working properly.
I have got a sm-n910f running Lollipop 5.0.1
My phones not rooted and I usually clear open apps before sticking the phone on charge.
Fast charge is toggled on. Can anyone give me any suggestions to what might fix this?
I put this query into the battery thread this morning but didnt get a response, so apologies for clogging up the forum but I am hopeful that some genius on Xda can give me some help here [emoji3]
Thanks for your help
Fast chargin is working only till 50% If you are more than 50, then it is charging with normal speed.
Thanks @Matin.salat I know this. When put my phone on charge at 15% and went to check it 20-25 minutes later it had only crept up 9% to 24%
do you get the "adaptive fast charger" (or something like that) notification when you plug it in? are you using the supplied cable? power only cables do not work with quick charge; needs to be data+power.
AFAIK Fast Adaptive charging only works if you have the specific adapter (charging block) that is capable of it. Are you using the original charger that came with the Note 4?
Below is a link to the part on samsung's website;

Hey.. I am using a SM-M910C. I had a similar problem just like you. My device is just 4 months old. Fast Charging used to work properly until a week back suddenly I noticed that it wasnt charging fast. Just like you mentioned, it was charging extremely slow. I checked everything to find out whether the problem was with the phone, power brick or cable. I borrowed my friends cable and tried it on and voila it was working fine. It was showing fast charger connected in notifications. So then I remember that, I had used the same charger and cable to charge my Power Bank before that. And I clearly remember the cable being hot at the time when I removed it. So figured that the cable got burnt off or something. Because the cable needs to have a particular resistance in order to support fast charging. Went and bought a new authentic cable and now fast charging is working as it used to. Never gonna charge the power bank with it anymore.
Hope this helps. Cheers!

Faulty charger?

Ok I just receive my Axon 7 Wednesday. After draining, I charged it with included charger and cable. Quick charge is working but it keeps on disconnect/connect cycle for every 5-15 secs. It's annoying as hell since screen goes on and off with sound! I tried it charging it thru pc and it works fine. Also, the charger have a buzzing sound (coil whine). It sounds like its going to explode so I never tried to charge it more than 10 minutes on 2 tries. Luckily, my sister note 7 quick charge works fine with it. So, is the included charger faulty? Should I contact zte for this?

I would contact ZTE - my charger is quiet. You sure the buzzing sound waqsn't from your sister's note 7?
Same issue here, except oddly it only starts to connect/disconnect from the included charger if I try to turn the screen on while it's charging. Once I put it back in standby it stops. For now i'm using an older non-Quickcharge Samsung charger and it never happens with that one. I'm within my exchange period though, considering exchanging the whole thing rather than taking a chance that it isn't the charger and then ending up with a refurb from ZTE because my 15 days is up to exchange in store.
It also makes some sound, but it's very quiet.
I'm having exactly the same issue. I bought one, had this problem, exchanged for another, same problem. Also, I've tried a couple of different chargers and cables and it's always the same. I've noted that if I charge while it's off, there's absolutely no issue, so it makes me believe that it's just a software bug.
hi,is that A2017U or A2017G?
This started happening to me. Except I can't charge neither with the included charger or my s7 edge charger. Going to have to send it to ZTE. Anyone gone through the exchange? Just got the phone 4 days ago

Just got mine a few days ago. With any charger and cable, ZTE or otherwise, it's taking 15 hours to charge from 0. Have to jiggle the cable to keep it connected. ZTE tells me bad charge port or battery. Won't enter Quick Charge. Shame it has to go back. Nice phone otherwise.

The AC charger is bad. No wonder for a 400 bucks phone they'll go after the cheapest brand they could to get us 3.0 chargers. Plugged it into my car this morning and it worked. Can I used the fast charger off my s7 edge? The input Is the same the output is obviously higher because it's 3.0 and Samsung one is 2.0. Will ZTE send a replacement charger? Or will I have to buy another. Says on the manual I can't use 3rd party charges too long or I can damage battery, guessing 20-40 cycles. Do I have to purchase another?

you can use any charger you want, but a Dash Charger from Oneplus because it's proprietary.
I personally use an Auckey QuickCharge 3.0 charger and it works great: https://www.amazon.com/AUKEY-Quick-...2-spons&keywords=aukey+quick+charge+3.0&psc=1
and the portable one too.

Ok .. wait... you like the phone ... the phone is perfectly ok ... it has a bad 5 dollar charger so you are going to send back the phone and buy a different lesser quality phone for higher price and .. well .. you may get a faulty charger on that one too .. or maybe even a faulty phone.... why take the chance .. just have ZTE replace the charger since the phone isn't defective. You do realize that you can charge it without QC and it is actually better because no matter what ZTE or anyone says .. QC will kill your battery faster than normal charging so QC should only be used if you need a quick boost and not to charge your phone on a regular basis. .. just use the little adapter they give you and your computer or an old charger you have laying around from your old phone and have ZTE send you a replacement for the bad charger you got.
When things are mass produced there is always a chance for a faulty component... and since the faulty component was the charger not the phone .. it seems kind of a foolish move to replace the phone if you "like it" .. I guess you don't really like the phone if having a charger go bad makes you want to switch out phones.

I'll just use my fd s7 edge till. I will be returning this device. It should work great out the box. No problems I will not buy another charger just so it won't work with this phone either. No AC charger works. Not to mention Wi-Fi has less range. Like I said I like this phone but I mostly like it for its sound. Wont keep it just because it sounds awesome when the battery wont charge. Not even going to deal with this sht I'll just get with a company I know makes quality products. Samsung never failed me, HTC either. Good luck guys.

Quick charging produces more heat than standard charging ... heat is what kills the battery. I have done more research and found that the heat caused by QC 3 isn't as bad as it used to be with prior fast charging methods and shouldn't really cause too much degradation of the battery. So if you are one of the people who replace their phone every year or maybe every 2 years .. then I guess QC3 isn't too bad.
If you are like me though, who doesn't replace their phone every year ... then QC3 may impact you if you use it for every charge. LOL .. my last phone before got the Axon 7 for replacement was a Samsung Galaxy S3 ... lol so I keep my phones for a long time .. The only reason I actually replaced the S3 was because I finally dropped it and broke the glass on the screen.

lol no offense but Samsung never failed you ???? you are lucky .. you bought a S7 edge instead of a Note.... Samsung .. a huge company failed a lot of people. But its obvious .. you are pissed off because a mass produced part went bad ... you are pissed because you had bad luck and got one of the bad chargers out of the 100000 chargers sent out. ... You act like the charger that came with it is the only way it can be charged and the phone is a paperweight because of this one small glitch that happens all the time and there is no way to control it.
No company can test every component they sell before it goes out the door... that would cost way too much and raise the price on the components way too much to be useful to anyone. As Samsung proves ... even big companies can have problems. Yes you got a bad charger .. just have ZTE replaced it .. im sure they would replace it without any problems at all. Until you get the replacement use either the cord from the Axon charger and plug that into your computer to charge it .. or use the adapter supplied with a charger that has a micro usb and charge it that way...
At least ZTE will deal with your problem ... I mean I have a Corsair AX760i Power supply .. it was over 200 dollars .. and supposed to be amazing quality .. well .. guess what .. it has a design flaw ... yet they still sell it even tho it has a known design flaw... they just don't care... at least with this ZTE .. its just a mass production issue.... its just a bad luck issue. .... they aren't selling defective products .... you just happened to get one out of thousands that prematurely failed and that happens to every product.

OK. So I've tried to use my s7 edge charger with it and it didn't work. Ironically it works with the car charger and it says AC charging but the phone displays a message to use the included charger for faster results. I come back from break and it don't work on AC, so in all honesty I would like to keep this phone but I think it's a defective unit. Not just the charger. So I'll contact ZTE to get a replacement because the phone is 4 days old. I will have more problems with a device like this if they can't do that I'll just get my money back. Thanks for your comments

yeah it may be an issue with the phone then .. I can plug my phone into my computer using the cord supplied with the original charger and it charges fine through my computer .. I can take my Samsung S3 basic non QC charger and plug it in with the adapter they supplied to convert it from micro to c and it will charge.. yes not fast but it will charge.
I would try plugging it into the computer and see if it will charge ... maybe the QC2 charger from Samsung just isn't compatible with the phone. .. for testing purposes tho .. i would try what I mentioned above .. using the computer with the supplied cord .. or using a basic micro usb charger with the adapter they supplied with the phone and see if it would charge... I guess if the only charger you have is the Samsung QC2 one .. I would try the computer with the supplied cord. I'm lucky I have a bunch of basic chargers lying around and they work to charge the phone without any problems .. yes its not quick charge but it still charges the phone.
If it wont charge when plugged into the computer ... or with a basic non QC charger and using the adapter to change from micro to c, then it may be something in the phone too ... but again ... these things happen with all mass produced products ... if you even have to do a full exchange ... hopefully you wont have bad luck with the replacement. My phone was fine out of the box ... as is with many others who bought it .. but ... again with all mass produced products ... it is always a crap shoot .... you can never say that each and every person is going to get a fully working product. Again to guarantee that they would have to test each phone and charger before packaging it and selling it.... and that would take many man hours and a lot of bucks so if they were to do that ... this phone would cost probably about 4000 dollars instead of 400.
I have to say I've had this phone now for a couple of months and I've had the s7 edge and s6 edge before that. I don't see the need for rooting the phones since i got the s6 edge onwards. The phones perform well out the box. But on all the Samsung's I've had from the original s series then the note series... There would be some sort of lag somewhere.... Though the Samsung's have improved recently... Still there is lag every now and then. This Chinese version Axon 7 i have is just totally lag free. It's on stock I've not done anything with it and it's working perfect out the box. I've got 2 sim and a 64gb sd card in it giving me a grand total of 188gb with dual sim. What can i say..... If they invest in some other features for the software... This phone can take over the smartphone market in a big way.

Coming from the HTC M8, the only difference that I noticed in wifi performance between the M8 and this phone is that the A7 takes twice as long as the M8 when connecting to a wifi source. When I say longer, mind you, I am only talking about ten seconds or so vs less than five for the M8. So, still not bad and totally acceptable. Once connected, the connection stays solid though. I am really happy with this phone. It is better than the M8 in every way. Beautiful design(esp. the front compared to the M8), newer and faster processor, bigger and better display, 4K recording, fingerprint sensor, USB-C, QC 3.0, dual SIM/microSD up to 256GB, Tmobile Band 12 support and, of course, the awesome audio/speakers. All that for almost $300 less than what I paid for the M8. This is without a doubt one of the best values in the high-end smartphone market right now. A premium phone but without a premium price.

I've had my axon 7 for 4 days. Good phone BTW. But this morning I woke up to charge my phone only to be woken up by the disconnecting sound. Battery at 30 and it refuses to go any more. Defect? I think so! Damn! Right when I thought this phone will be puuurfect. This happens I waited a long time to get this phone and now I might have to send it back

What was the charging temperature? I think over 44°C it shuts off. I sometimes have big lags when I download or stream stuff while charging. I had two other devices so far, this newer device has a larger actual battery capacity than the previous one but has this heating behavior. I think this is due to having different voltage settings to ensure larger battery capacity since it is still directly correlated. The other device didn't have this issue and felt more fluid overall but battery was depleting a little bit faster.
It may be that your device has too aggressive voltage settings and it stops charging because of overheating. But it is strange that it happens while you don't use the device at all.
Can you install accubattery and check your charging stats, estimated battery capacity, temperature, etc.?

I received mine a few days ago and it won't enter quick charge and I have to jiggle the charge cable to keep it connected. Tried multiple chargers and cables. ZTE tells me it's a bad charge port or battery. Too bad it's a great phone otherwise. It will have to go back though. 15 hours to charge from 0 is not helpful.

I am. Sure replacement will be great. I had 4 devices and they were all great, so you were just unlucky. Compares to other brands I had before, quality has been very consistent from device to device.

Thanks. Sadly, though, it started out great, but then started suffering from the same issue as the first. It's not quite taking 15 hours to charge, life the first, but a solid eight or nine. Also, there is the additional bonus of white flashing horizontal lines every so often, until I restart the phone.
I wonder if B&H got a bad batch. I noticed two other people, in different forums that got there's from B&H, had the exact same charge issue. Strange.
I've been living with it, until I can get a LeEco to play with, then it's getting RMAed. Hopefully the third will be the charm!

Which version have you been using? This is something strange. Do you think B&H may be sending returned faulty devices to their customers? You seem to be amongst a tiny minority of people who have issues - such a level of faultiness cannot exist for any manufacturer, it just contradicts the principles of manufacturing smartphones.

First I had a gold A2017U. Then a silver one. I have also heard some people that bought from Best Buy and had strange issues. I can tell you both got a big shipment in right before Thanksgiving. I almost didn't buy the phone because they were both out. The suddenly that week they both had them in stock. As a side note the tech support person at ZTE mentioned he had a few people with similar problems and was going to swap it out without hesitation. Instead I just returned it to B&H for a new one.
My tinfoil hat theory, and I have a background in manufacturing as an engineer, is that they cranked up production to meet holiday demand and didn't pay as close attention to QC (ie what parts their suppliers were providing). But I have no idea. It's just heresy and anecdotes from people. ::shrug::

I should mention, I still love the phone, and have no I'll will towards ZTE. It's an amazing bargain, and the best no contract phone I've had, aside from the issues. I looking forward to getting a replacement.

Charing issue.

Does this phone require a specific cable and or power block/car charger to charge? Im using my regular stuff that I use on my s8 pixel 2 xl and at first it said slow charging. Now it doesn't charge at all. I tried using a portable battery pack still nothing. Works fine on my pixel 2 xl. Not sure if it's defective or requires a specific charge like the oneplus 5 did.
Well this is weird after trying to reboot it got stuck in shuting down screen so I had to hard reset and now it charges.
No special charger needed. I use a Pixel charger and a Samsung Fast charger, and they both work fine.

After rebooting mine it charges but now it bounced between rapid to slow to charging. Not sure if it's the cable or I got a defective unit.

I have the same problem (white Sprint unit) with car charger fast charging works with other phones but not with ph1 and for couple of hours couldn't charge at all only after reboot start to charge again
Mine sometimes bounces back from rapid to show charge but I'm sure it's always rapid charging. Regardless of what state of charging is showing, my drive home from work always almost tops up my phone to 100%.
I just charged mine over night and it's at 92 percent when I checked it read slow charging 5 hours till full. I unplugged it plugged it back in same thing slow charging this is weird.

I owned this phone 3 times and they all did the same thing. Its the reason why I returned the first 2. It would work for a month with no issues and then I will have a issue for a day or a week and then it goes back to normal. I normally use a 3rd party charger that I never had a issue with. It might be it doesn't play well with other chargers. Reminds me of the Amazon Fire phone, it did the same thing. It charges fine with the original charger but acts up when you charge it with a 3rd party charger.
AC
I use the charger for my Huawei Mate 9 at work, and the PH-1 at home. The mate 9 works for rapid charge just fine.
