Sony announces massive Android 5.1 upgrade plans - Xperia Z3 Compact General

Android 5.1 Lollipop is currently in development for lots of Xperia devices and it is scheduled for a July release. The Xperia devices, which will get the 5.1 update are:
Sony Xperia Z3 series: Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
Sony Xperia Z2 series: Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet
Sony Xperia Z1 series: Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z Ultra GPE
Sony Xperia Z series: Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z
Sony Xperia M2 and Xperia M2 Aqua
Sony Xperia T2 Ultra
Sony Xperia C3
The dual SIM flavors of the devices above will be treated with 5.1 Lollipop as well.
The updates will roll out starting this July. Naturally, the availability of those updates will vary by markets and carriers, but eventually they should reach to all compatible devices out there.

Poeple in these forums complain a lot, but Sony is really on its game with the updates.

yeah I think with some justification though, but thats partly down to the insanely stupid lolipop mess. They had this testing for months and still released a half bodged version which has to be patched up.
good to hear from sony, maybe ill upgrade from kk if its any good.

I find it to work pretty fine aside of battery life being reduced and camera missing camera2 API. If you think its half bodged version, what should Samsung and HTC owners say about theirs... Memory leak bug still present after numerous tries to patch it, while Sony released it already bug-free...

By all accounts, 5.1 still has the 'mobile radio active' bug that is draining peoples' batteries. I have noticed that bug and am currently testing my second install of 5.0.2 to see how much of a problem it will be with my usage patterns, so I might end up going back to 4.4.4 rather than forward to 5.1

Sony's Lollipop is great. Samsung freaking had to cease the update of Galaxy S5 because it was so bad. Sony's one actually had only one or two bugs which quickly got fixed. There are nearly no issues on the lastest firmware really minus the headphone profiles bug
Sent from my D5833 using XDA Free mobile app

Sony's lollipop has the same bugs as stock android as far as I can tell. It does have a few nice extras, but also has a few fugly touches and some bloat.
My biggest gripe is the Android "mobile radio active" bug... is no-one else experiencing this with the sony firmware?

No man, Sony Lollipop sucks because the Ram Managment is very, very bad... Maybe you don´t use a lot multitasking, but users that buy this phone and use it for work and need a good amount of apps opened all time with 2GB or 3GB of RAM are very disappointed, we are waiting 5.1.1 too, to see if Sony fixes that, we hope that. With 2GB or 3GB this problem doesn´t have to happen.

I have all of these apps open. And they are all cached. They open instantly. I don't know of this multitasking problem you speak of. One day, i had a file minimised in office suite and it was still there the next day and opened instantly. I don't know what you guys are doing wrong but my phone is flying and is managing RAM better than any manager at Walmart.

I haven't noticed any issues with the D5803_23.1.A.1.28 second release of 5.0.2. Rooted and running very nicely; battery life seems similar to KitKat, possibly very slightly worse (could be an updated app causing that).

I've not noticed any issues at all with lollipop I play a lot of memory intensive games and occasionally forget to close them >_<

Can't people just be happy that support for this phone has not been dropped (yet), instead of complaining about timescales for release of the promised updates?
I thought people on these forums are a little more in the know than most places and would realise that it's not a fast process to prepare, test and release an update that isn't completely broken/full of bugs.
I guess I was wrong lol.

The developers here do a fantastic job and I have massive respect for everything they do for the modding/Android community. Several devices of mine have had their useful lives extended greatly because of people on XDA.
However, they are not under the same constraints as the devs that work for Sony.
Sony's devs will be under strict developmental, testing and qa constraints and cannot release updates with bugs and rely on people providing bug reports/logcats to fix said bugs after the fact. They have to release software with all features working and with minimal bugs.
Not to mention all the red tape/paperwork they no doubt have to deal with and the other devices that all need maintaining. I would also imagine that the budget for maintaining older devices is dwarfed by the budget for new devices.
It's also worth noting that a lot of the devs good work on XDA is only possible because of blobs/binaries provided by Sony's devs in the first place.
Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk
Sony releases an update with a camera app that takes 4 sec to open and everyone loses sleep over it while some1 here releases an update with wifi issues, screen on delays etc, they get praise for the device bring up which gets labeled as 1st release. lol
Obviously Sony cant depend on rapid development and recoveries and backups and all the fancy stuff we do when we get into issues when it relates to the average android user who by the phone and occasionally plug it in for PC companion to update and that's it. When wifi stops working no one is gonna say " oh this is a first release. They will fix it soon". People take back the devices and swap brands like that. Consumers are a fickle bunch.
Also as I have always said to myself , AOSP is the most barebones and feature lacking kind of experience out there. Android has matured a lot since the froyo gingerbread days and so have the OEM modifications. The reason I decided on the XZ against the N4. I am one willing to sacrifice smoothness for functionality any day. My Z is still stock and I will probably keep it that way til the EOL is reached. I came from the LG O2x which got ICS in December/January so trust me when is say I can wait lol.

Overall Performance seems better on KK. The difference between ART and dalvik is pretty big in some apps aswell. 4.3 brings trim.
The camera however ... Not so sure about that. I doubt they will even update the camera stuff. Why bother spending time and money optimizing an old flagships camera when people can just buy the New flagship with a camera that is advertised to be incredible? That's how a big company works. Time is money. Sad reality.

Not true, Sony was used to be lazy, now Sony is become the fastest to bring update..... Z1 was the first phone to get the 4.4.4 update before all other brand.... GREAT SONY KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
Excelent!
That kind of behavior puts Sony as the first for my next smartphone / tablet.
The way they keep supporting "older" devices and the fact that their "skin" is light and not intrusive (cough* cough* samsung) is a big plus in my mind!
I wounder if they will enable features like 4k / 120+FPS on the Z1 with the update. That would be awesome to get thoses things natively!
Any ROM makers planning on making a custom rom when it comes out? I'd love for a 5.0 rom real soon.

If only the L features are there, which will be....that alone will make the device a whole lot better standby battery life wise and camera tweaks will help immensely. Many features users here on our Z1 forums have been wanting from the Z2/Z3 are there by default, an ultra stamina mode(restricted performance to drastically improve battery life in cases of emergencies), double tap to wake, move to wake, more camera controls(RAW, Exposure control, shutter speed and better quality photos).
Even if some of these aren't implemented on stock Sony apps the updated google apps for 5.0 will have them. I'm not expecting much from Sony's side either, but as long as they just update it, which they will, Google's tweaks alone will make things significantly better.
Problem is Sony ROMs are quite buggy. They haven't fixed the Camera not available issue yet and all headphones stop working randomly every 2-3 days and phone needs to be restarted. There's also a delay in the lock screen unlocking process. If they simply update to 5.0 and make it really bug free I'm happy.
Omg yessssss, they even confirmed Z1s, which is my lame phone hoorayyy victorryyyyy
---------- Post added at 09:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:18 PM ----------
Also, since Android Lolipop said it's going to have a new type of camera api, that probably means our cameras will be going full potential possibly, same goes for the Xperia Z where people said it had horrible quality for a 13mp? was it or 8? i forget, other wise I hope our camera improves a lot since it's one of Android L's new features, or so iread somewhere

Another Z2, but only because this hypothetical switch would give me an extra couple of months' warranty. There's nothing out there which remotely compares to this phone other than the Z3, and most of its advantages will likely be in the Z2 soon, too. And personally, I prefer the styling of the Z2 over the Z3.

Pretty much the same as everyone else.
I've only had my Z2 for a few weeks, but as far as I'm concerned, I don't want to swap for another phone, even a Z3.
Like some of the other guys, I prefer the styling of the Z2 and, thanks to Niaboc79's ROM, I have most of the Z3's bells and whistles anyway. HD Audio and a slimmer design just aren't enough of a reason to upgrade to a Z3 and there's nothing else out there that catches my eye.
For me...
If my Z2 was completely irrepairable or stolen & I had to claim for it...
A M8, the M8 was my 1st choice but it wasnt available until after 2 weeks after I had already opted for the Z2.
I owe @niaboc79 the credit for making me not regret getting the Z2...
He has single handedly unleashed the dormant potential of this device.
I only used HTC devices prior to getting the Z2 and HTC custom ROM development is on a level of its own.
We are extremely lucky to have niaboc,

While we're waiting for the release of the Lollipop update, who should be this month, the Russian Samsung S4 gt-i9500 got the update. The S4 not the S5.
What bothers me the most, is almost all the flagships (Samsung, LG, Nexus, HTC,...) got the update expect Sony's

If Sony sells its mobile division, I'd probably by a nexus
I'll take Samsung for my example because I know them.
Samsung will rush their update, they make sure everything works as it should, but the software is not optimized, My S3 would always lag really badly when I updated, it could take 5 seconds for the app draw to load, and they fill it with bloat and update their own apps which also lag really badly. I would prefer to wait another month as see a quality product rather than relive my Samsung nightmare.

Was a gift from my gf, like my other phones.
Free phones ftw.
They should take their time. No need to hurry. Quality phone requires quality update

Sony is doing better now
Slower updates
Better updates
I dont care if it takes longer because its buggless
167 is a prime example.
Its coming soon, be patient!
To be honest it's this month and whenever they start to roll out the update, it'll be there on multiple servers unlike Samsung or HTC.
Other OEMs haven't started rolling it out completely and Only problem with Sony is that I am afraid they'll update mid-range phones to lollipop.
Plus Selling their mobile division won't happen I guess. They just need to stop producing more phones and just stick to a plan with less devices with more futuristic updates with some cool ads. Unlike boring or stupid ones. and they will rise from this nightmare and will continue to amaze us but I really hope that they'll release Camera features with the next lollipop update

I understand where you're coming from but it's been a Perennial issue with Sony. It's a very competitive industry and lagging behind others does Sony no good. There will always be the expected responses from Sony fans like better to wait for an update which is bug free than one rushed and bug ridden .
Truth is, there has never been an update from Sony that's been bug free and there probably never will be as is the case with all manufacturers.
The good news is they're at least closing the gap. Once upon a time they were many months behind. It's unfortunate because the Sony ui is one of the closest to stock so you should expect it to be one of the earliest.
Software support has never been one of their highest priorities but the new CEO did say they wanted to improve in this respect.
Let's hope so eh!

167 took ages because Sony wanted to showcase the software on the z3 range. That was down to strategy and not software optimisation. The 6 month madness was to blame for the delay in getting 4.4.4 to the z2. Nothing else!

Notice that I've been loyal to Sony since my first phone (w810) and so and so. And I would love to stick with Sony to the very last end but they should make some changes.
I don't know if its me, but the only bug I did have was with the Z when running 4.3: an app couldn't sync with the server, also the widgets stopped working from time to time.
That's all I can remember from the w810, w995, x2, x10, J, S, Z and Z2 bugs

Google Announces Android M - Will Xperia Z1 Ever Get The Update?

Google announced the Android M update at I/O 2015 keynote. Android M takes Android L and optimizes the **** out of it.
- Better battery life
- Android Pay
- Fingerprint support
- USB Type-C
- Enhanced Google Now
- App Permissions
That's a power-packed features list, eh? More about Android M features here. Also, the Android M Developer Preview is already available.
I wonder if the Xperia Z1 would ever get the Android M update, seeing that the Android 5.1 Lollipop update itself won't arrive until August 2015.
highly doubt it!
Yes, an the Android XL also.
If the z had received lollipop, maybe z1 will get android m.......should be possible....
I also highly doubt Z1 will get it. As of right now, I only hope Z1 will receive a fully stable no bug (no battery drain, no sound vollume problem, etc.) 5.1. Besides, I don't think Z1 can get much benefits from M anyway (like those fingerprint support or usb-c or even Android Pay since it's clearly not available everywhere)

Sure an update is always welcomed. It's just that we shouldn't really get our hopes up. In my opinion, It's already Sony's best effort for Z1 if it get 5.1. By the time M is official released, Z1 will probably be way over the 18 month support period by Sony. But who know, just my guess, maybe Sony will surprise us (in a good way )
BTW, is there any dev working on porting Android M developer preview for the Xperia Z1?
I'd like Android M, but if we don't get it then 5.1 had better solve the issue with the mobile radio staying active and causing ridiculous amounts of battery drain.
I guess one thing to keep in mind is that the Z got 5.0.2, so perhaps they will only drop support for the Z given how different the hardware is, while the Z1, Z Ultra and Z1C all share very similar hardware. From what I can tell, the hardware hasn't changed all that much since the Z Ultra aside from the Z3+/Z4 which is using an octa-core S810 compared to the quad-core S800/S801 inside most of the rest of the Z series. Whether that has much sway on development time I wouldn't have any idea.
If they can include Auto Backup for Apps http://developer.android.com/preview/backup/index.html Also using your micro SD card as internal storage.... http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/0...or-accessed-normally-with-no-additional-apps/
That would be great for those who don't root their handset
Even Z can get updated to 5.1 i think Z1 can at least get 2 more major updates. So yes
Of course not. I understand we all love our devices, but guys, it's just marketing. However, let's hope someone ports it to our Z1, otherwise, we may need to buy something new in the near future.

http://android.hdblog.it/2015/06/22/Sony-Android-M-Xperia-Z3-C-AOSP/ .. the answer is YES !
the binaries are up in the dev world of sony!
developer.sonymobile.com/downloads/tool/software-binaries-for-aosp-m-developer-preview/
i think it will recive M because the original z will also receve 5.1.1 so probably the z1 will recive the last android version as android M.
That's really nice! At least that smells good!
Sony will sell its mobile business before the Z1 gets M.
Android M for Xperia Z1
Good to know that even Xperia Z1 will get Android M update.
I did google to get some info. Below are some trusted links

Also there is tutorial on how to install Android M preview on Z1 at ibtimes.co.uk/how-update-xperia-z1-z2-z3-android-m-developer-preview-freexperia-rom-1510292
Enjoy...
