[Q] add adds back to rom?? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know this is a strange request but how do I remove the ad blocking that's built in a ROM? I'm playing gravestompers and want to get free skulls in it but can't go to tapjoy to install crap because of the ad blocking so my question is? Is there a way to stop blocking once in a while and turn it back on after if the ad blocking comes with the ROM itself. what is needed to turn the function on and off??? Thanks in advance!

Most ad blocking is done by changing the hosts file so that the ad sites are listed as localhost. This means when they are attempting to go there, they don't.
So check for the hosts file on your device (/system/etc/hosts)
Remove the entries and you are no longer adblocking.

Problems blocking ads

I've rooted my Nexus 4, but I can't seem to block ads. Tried adaway and adfree. Any suggestions?
Try adblock plus as well, maybe that works.

Check to see that the file /etc/hosts actually gets updated when you use adaway/adfree. Also, you need to reboot your phone after you apply the new hosts file.
Same issue here, Used adaway, adfree, none of them seem to work.

No you don't, my ads are always blocked immediately after running ad away even if I don't reboot.

If you don't reboot your phone immediately after using AdBlock or AdFree (I switched from the former to the latter), then you will run into an issue where the Back button doesn't actually take you back in the browser. You have to double click it and mess with it in general.
I didn't know this for a solid 5-6 months when I first rooted my Atrix back in the day and it DROVE ME NUTS.
Anyway, go into Superuser or SuperSU and make sure that you've given AdBlock or AdFree root access. I would maybe even recommend just installing both apps anyway, reinstalling, granting root access, run/apply new hosts file, and then immediately reboot.
adway working just fine, are you sure that you rooted it properly though.

Whether you have to reboot or not depends on cache and DNS. Just because your ads are always blocked, doesn't necessarily mean everyone else doesn't need to reboot.
Adfree works fine for me. Reboot the phone to be safe.

There's some funky stuff going on for me. I checked my hosts file, and it had in fact been updated by Adfree/Adaway/Adblock Plus (I've tried them all troubleshooting this).
Superuser says that they have the appropriate permissions.
I take it that there's multiple methods for rooting, right? I just followed the first walkthrough I found. I'm running the CM10.1 nightly with this issue.
Could someone who has adblocking working describe what method they used for flashing recovery? I'm thinking that there's some sort of problem with my filesystem. One symptom is that I can't figure out where RomManager is storing my backups. It sees them, and they take up space, but they're not in my SDCARD partition.
EDIT: I see that my backups are in /data/media/clockworkmod and the hosts file that is being altered by adblocking software is in /system/etc.

[Q] AdAway-like ad block application for Windows

Hello guys
I'm looking for an AdAway-like application for Windows 10 x64, using the well-known "hosts" blocking method.
I know there are browser extensions doing the job, but I'm missing an application like AdAway where I can add my own hosts sources, apply custom black- and whitelists etc.
Does anyone have a solution for me?
Thanks in advance!
This thread can be closed, I created something on my own. See here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/win...ll-adblock-t3103598/post60616286#post60616286
This sounds pretty cool, the only thing that gives me pause is how would one go about uninstalling it, or is that even necessary?
Great idea will check thread out on laptop later
I recommend this, a multi-platform hosts tool called Hozz with a beautiful UI. Merging different hosts files from internet, easy backup, all the features you need is here.
Hi, will this triggers Anti-AdBlockers scripts?
I got the Android host after passing adaway and put in the windows host ran perilously

Hey Adaway to stick on dirty unicorns?

Does anyone know how to get Adaway to stick on DU? It seems the hosts file gets updated but then reverts back to original after sometime.

Yeah I haven't been able to get it to work, their own integrated ad blocking (that doesn't work at all) gets in the way I believe so there's nothing we can do. Have you tried another ad blocker like Adblock Plus?
System > Etc....find all 3 Host files and delete them. Run Adaway and it will stick.

Yep! This was my only complaint with their ROM. I substituted adaway with some adblocking Xposed modules. The modules coupled with DU's native adblocking did the trick.
Thanks for the input. I think i actually got it to stick. Here's what i did
1. In adaway preferences, touch Target hosts file then select custom target
2. Select custom target then enter /system/etc/hosts.og
3. Close preferences the hit download and apply.
4. If asks to create symbolic link select yes
So far is been sticking for me. I i think hosts.og is the original and being restored at some point.

No, no, and no. No GApps or Playstore access. If you want the Kindle app search the forum for the modified one and side load it. You'll also need to update cacerts.bks in order to sign in.

I have tried looking in the forum but there doesn't seem to be a dedicated downloads area, installs and files it seems are attached to posts like this one. So i'm reading through post after post to see if someone as added anything in . Its very time consuming ,confusing and there's rarely confirmation in the posts that the attachments work.
Is this the one i need??

That is the correct Kindle app. There are a few updated cacerts.bks files now. Here is a link to one with instructions: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/general/nst-g-revisiting-cacerts-bks-t3872617
Oh, and you need to check your email when you are trying to sign in. Amazon requires a two-step authorization for this old app. They will send you a one-time password to use. It will look like the login has failed, but just check your email.

ok i've installed kindle app using apk and copied a cacerts.bks file from the link you provided into files/system/etc/security
both /etc/security didn't exists so i created them, is this correct? The kindle app is asking me to 'register to get started'
If try and log on in this window i get 'no internet connection' error. There's links below for 'forgot password', amazon.com.jp customer?' and 'don't have an amazon account'.

No. Those directories must exist on the device, so either the ancient rooting method you used did not work properly or else you are using some kind of file manager that does not show everything. Some of the old rooting methods may fail with FW 1.2.2 (which is what I assume you are using).

Yes, did you see the last bit I added to my previous post? When you try to login with your Amazon account you get an error and Amazon almost immediately sends you an email with a one-time password to enable the old Kindle app to login. BUT, without the updated cacerts.bks file functioning, any login attempt--even with the one-time password--will fail.
You said "file/system/etc/security". What is "file" doing in there? The folder you want is at root so the address is just /system/etc/security. Unless you meant something else.
Okay i can see the security folder now by following post 3 by Overbytes here https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/general/view-root-files-nst-t2817036
"If you're using ReLaunch that was installed with NookManager, to change the launchers behavior from the home screen click on the gear in the upper right corner, this enters you into the settings menu, click on advanced settings, general settings, make sure that the don't leave start directory item is unchecked, go back and under file manager settings check show hidden files and uncheck hide known extensions. Back out again and in the main advanced settings menu scroll down and click on the save settings and restart item. You should be able to view anything on internal and external storage."
However when try to copy the i simply get an error message 'unable to copy/move cacerts.bks
Maybe the device isn't rooted????

I'm not sure Relaunch can do what you need. You can "see", yes, but that doesn't mean you can change. To do that, /system has to be mounted as R/W and I don't know if Relaunch can do that. Back in the day I used an app called Root Browser. Now I just use ES File Explorer as a general file manager. It can be set for root access and also can mount /system so you can make changes. I've attached a copy below.

If you are asking about the NST, Google abandoned Android 2.1 back in 2017. No market access. You'll have to search online for what you want and side-load it.
