Getting a replacement S6 due to screen. - Galaxy S6 General

Hello!
So I just wanted to make a brief post and post a pic of my current S6 and why I'm sending it back for a replacement. I noticed today that about 1/4th or 1/5th of my screen (towards the bottom near the home button) is pinkish. It's visible mostly on white images, but now that I've seen it, I can't un-see it! I've read a few other posts here and there about screen discoloration, and I noticed that Erica Griffin touched upon it on one of her videos. I'm thinking that it has to be a hardware problem, cause I can't see how software would cause this issue. Pics below:

Let me know what you guys think. Am I crazy and making things up in my mind, or does the screen actually have like 2 different color calibrations?! :crying:

Nope...one of the two I bought look kinda like that. I think yours is worse actually.

I have the same problem but it's towards the left in the middle. But I have to really look for it. It seems to be worse at certain angles. My GF has a Note 4 and her whites look kinda rainbow-ish as well. So maybe it's a Samsung thing?
But like I said in another thread. I've had a 2 M8s, Nexus 5s, and Z3s side by side and none of the screens looked the same. Some looked better, some had different color temps, etc. So if you return it, there's a good possibility the next one won't look as good or have slight defects. I've seen people return phones several times until they were satisfied.

You are not crazy. I had the same problem with the S6 I preordered from tmobile but the pinkish/purplish tint was on the upper 1/3 of my screen. Yours does look worse but mine was pretty noticeable as well. It's actually most apparent on grey backgrounds with the tint section looking much darker than the non tinted part of the screen. And I agree, once you see it, you can't unsee it.

Both the display units I look at at Best Buy had it to some extent, though not nearly as bad. I had it on both the S3 and the S4. I was pretty noticeable on the S4 but I just dealt with it. After how much I paid for the S6, I wasn't about to again.
Anyway, I got my replacement last night and am much happier with the screen. It still suffers from the uneven screen tone issue, but its far less noticeable and something I can definitely live with.

Hrm... how widespread is this issue. I am still on the fence about picking up the S6 and I certainly don't want one if it has uniformity issues. Maybe I'll wait for the second batch to come out before deciding.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. T-Mobile for me is pretty decent about returns. I noticed some scratches on the heart rate monitor glass and they're shipping one out (about a week delay). Seriously, take the chance it's worth it. This phone is amaze-balls.

I am starting to regreat of preordering..

Well what do you expect? The device isn't even officially launched yet, what people are getting are some pre-released units. Not to mention that the phone has almost no problems, except the flash and now the dead pixels, but the latter one is something which can happen to everybody. Nobody is immune to dead pixels....

I've never owned a Samsung smartphone before, but kept reading how amazing their displays are VS iphone and LG, but there are so many threads like this one.. Don't know what to think. I hope the one I get is fine.

This has nothing to do with preleased units. I got a retail unit that I preordered early. It's probably from the same batch that will be sent to T-Mobile stores on launch day.
This screen issue is something that affects just about all super amoled screens. I've checked out numbers galaxy phones (S4s, S5s, Notes, S6s, etc...) at verizon AT&T, best buy and nearly all suffered from this uneven screen color balance to some degree.
The thing is, in most situations the screen looked absolutely gorgeous. You really can only tell on certain backgrounds (mostly white and various shades of grey). That's why when you go to see the phone at a store with its demo on or casually play with it, you probably won't notice it. But once you get it home and have had a chance to really do things like reading a book against a white background, you'll eventually notice it. As as I've said before, once you see it, you'll always see it.
What matters is how much it'll bother you. My wife and brother-in-law didn't think it was a big deal and would not have exchanged it. My sister and few of my coworkers said they would get a replacement. I got a replacement and am happier for it.

The screen is amazing. Unless you get an S6 with this screen issue that is as severe as the OPs, you display will look fantasticmost of the time. Like you, I came from a LG G2 and also own a Tab Pro 8.4, which both use LCD panels. Even though my replacement S6 still suffers from this issue a bit, I think it look much better than either of those other devices. This is really apparent on photos and videos. I did a side by side comparison of the newest 1080p Avengers trailer from youtube with the S6 and G2 and the S6 looked much better. I simply love the deep blacks and more vivid colors.

My bad, those aren't dead pixels. Those are likely just pieces of lint or dust cause I took the pic with the S6 on my bed. My replacement unit is set to arrive today, so I'm going to take a side by side pic of both phones on a white screen again to compare the difference. Will post it up when I get it :good:.

Did Tmobile reship free of charge on shipping and whatever, restocking fees, or any other expenses? Or was the exchange completely free?

Well, second time wasn't a charm lol. Received the replacement unit today and it suffered from the same discoloration on the screen, this time in the upper 1/4th to 1/5th of the screen. I didn't even bother to mess around with it, just packed it right back up and went to UPS and sent it back. At this point, the only option I really have is to wait until the replacement phone is received back at the warehouse, then go into my local Tmobile and get a new device from them in person, THEN send this original phone back via UPS to the warehouse... What a pain in the ass. I'm not sure who to be more upset with, the ridiculous hoops you have to jump through with Tmobile, or the faulty screens/calibration from Samsung.
Edit: The only thing I've found that helps with the problem a little is to switch from basic to AMOLED Cinema under the display settings, but the colors look so ridiculous with this setting that I honestly don't know if I can keep it like this. In fact, I don't think changing it to AMOLED mode actually fixes the problem at all, it just distracts my eyes enough with everything else that I don't notice it as much lol.

Hate to say but I did say it would be 50/50 chance. Quality control on phones nowadays is terrible.

I had to exchange my device 4 times due to a particle inside the glass screen. I didn't notice about the pink hue until I got to my third device and read this thread. I assume that my first two device I exchanged had the same issue.
I too would rather wait for S6 to be release in-store and hopefully one of the reps can notice the faulty display issue. I'm just getting tired of contacting customer service every time to order a new device and return the old one. My EIP is practically piling up.
I just hope that someday the media would pick up on this problem when the device is officially released.

Hehe yea, I figured since it was my first device I'd roll the dice and see if I got lucky; didn't happen haha. At this point, I'm just going to return my original S6 as well, have them activate a microSIM in store and throw it in my old Blackberry Z30 until both phones reach the return destination in Texas. After the refunds and everything I'll pick up another S6, in store this time. (I've learned my lesson: I'm never ordering a phone online again. It's gonna be in store or not at all from now on lol).

Both mine and my gf's Note 4 suffered from this issue. While it was annoying it didn't seem to bad enough to warrant return/exhange. I was concerned about it on my S6 as well. The funny thing is when I first turned it on I didn't notice anything until I switched the screen to the basic mode and turned the bightness down. Whites are definitely uneven, with a warm spot. I don't think its severe enough to replace. But it does seem to be almost unavoidable. I didn't notice it on my S4 until I went back and examined it. Otherwise, the screen is beautiful. It doesn't help being OCD.
The first time I experience this was on a Nokia Icon - it was severe. Fortunately none of my other devices were to that degree.

Yea, I hear ya. See my problem is 2 fold: 1) I am pretty ocd when it comes to defects in things, and 2) I've been using TFT LCD screens on multiple phones for awhile now, and this is my first time back on an AMOLED in a long time. Due to that fact, I'm guessing this issue is sticking out a lot more to me than it might others who have been using AMOLED screens for a couple generations now in succession. I can take a few problems with a phone here and there, like a scratch on the metal or whatnot, but when there's a problem with the screen of a device, you can't get away from it. Every time you use the phone, you have to see it :\.

Different Versions / Colors of EVOS

So we bought 3 EVO's yesterday.
2 of them were a darker black and appeared smoother then the other one which was lighter black which appeared to have a tiny bit of texture.
Which versions do you guys have?

I've got the lighter, more textured version.
Frankly, I'm starting to get pretty damned mad at HTC with all these little 'surprises'. First they start substituting different types batteries in some Evos, and now they decide to begin alternating battery covers? This isn't cool at all. What if a certain population with one type of battery cover discovers that theirs is more fragile than the other? I can't imagine HTC alternated for nothing more than aesthetic appeal.
Combined with the software issues we're experiencing, I'm seriously considering returning this phone, as much as I love it. This just screams poor quality control and uniformity.

I'm pretty certain the only difference is one of your battery covers is jacked up.. from what I can tell, both EVOs look the same exact around the rim of the phone.

They're definitely different battery covers. The smooth one appears to pick up some lint and hair. The textured version is unable of doing this, judging by the surface and time I've had it in my pocket.

Again 2 of my EVOs are smooth dark black, and one of them is lighter black with a little more texture.
I was going to guess the lighter colored textured version was the oddity but I've talked to 2 people now that have this version.

From the Sprint literature it appears to be flat dark black:
Again I see other reviews from people where they have the lighter more textured backing and side edges:

The lighter grey version is from the first batch. The darker black is from the second batch.

How are we supposed to react to this? HTC must have changed it for some reason besides aesthetic appeal. Personally, I'm wondering if the first batch of batteries has a few duds, seeing as how there are so many varied outcomes of battery life. If it is, I certainly won't be a happy camper, having one of the gold-trimmed batteries myself.

Dude if this makes you want to return it... then maybe you should get a iPhone. The EVO is awsome, and a different texture doesn't bother me in the slightest. Nor does the battery issue, because when the Extended Batteries come out, I will be buying a "baby bump" for my EVO. And you can take that to the bank.

Are you really that defensive over a cell phone? I am as big an Android fan as they come, so I'm not criticizing Android. I am obviously questioning HTC. There ARE other smartphone manufacturers beside HTC and Apple, you know.
I am not annoyed solely over the battery cover itself being different. I am annoyed over HTC making such a significant switch in batteries, covers, and SD cards for no apparent reason in the second shipment. There could be a world of differences in a batch of devices created in April/May and a batch manufactured this month. So the battery issue doesn't affect you personally; so what? It affects everybody else who suffers from it, and not everybody can afford to or wishes to buy an extended battery to rectify HTC's mistakes.
You also completely ignored my points regarding the software issues. This hardware switch isn't the only thing strange about the Evo since its launch, let alone the light bleeding and poor screen grounding. Factor in the 30fps graphic cap, touch sensor lag, and poor Wifi reception, and it's nothing short of a pain in the neck for people who expected to get their money's worth. It's clear that HTC isn't treating this like a flagship device, otherwise they wouldn't be making little switches and software changes like this.
Mine is definitely the blacker more rubbery backing. So I guess I lucked out and got the 2nd batch. I got it at a radioshack at 6am on launch day too, so I guess they had both batches on launch day. No wonder I haven't been having all the issues some of the users are having.
I don't have light leakage, don't have battery issues, don't have bottom screen lifting, no SD card issues. 2nd batch has less issues maybe?
Do you have light leak? Take it out of any covers and go to a completely dark room and look under the 4 menu buttons and see if you see any light leak.

Returning it will not fix the software issues the phone has. Furthermore, I'd have to get it exchanged by HTC, since I bought mine from Wirefly. Even if I wanted a phone from the second batch, I'd have to wait quite a while for the supply to increase again.

No light leak at all. But if the room is completely dark, the touch icons have a slight glow, but definitely not a light leak below that on the seam.

You have to take brochure pictures with a grain of salt. The timing is sometimes such that you're creating a brochure before the final product is actually ready. Often times you will have untextured plastic, no logos, etc, in your photography models. It then all gets corrected in photoshop. It's really amazing what they can do, but it doesn't always match up 100% to the final product.

I have the lighter, smooth cover and my hardware version says 002.
So there is definitely something different.
Also, another thing about the battery cover is this:
The people with the first batch (hardware version 002) seem to have a flimsy battery cover. By this I mean, the right side seems to not fit after you remove it a couple of times. It sticks out a little bit.
Can the newer batch (hardware version 003) confirm the battery door resting flush?
Revision 3 here. Case is a dark black color but seems pretty smooth to me. AData SD card. Battery looks red but has the gold trim on the back. 2 small patches of light leak at the bottom of the screen under the function keys. Never had any issue with my battery cover not fitting.
Mine came from Sprint Releases. Ordered the day before launch day, received it the next Monday

Disappointed with washed out screen

I received my Shift today only to find out it has a crappy washed out screen. I've had some experiences with bad displays on the Mytouch 4G as indicated in this thread so I decided to visit a few Sprint stores and kiosks to check out their displays. They all exhibited washed out screens when viewed from an angle. All the reps I talked to are unaware of a display issue or didn't even notice problem until I pointed it out.
I also noticed that all the EVOs I looked at had a similar problem. I decided to check out a Verizon kiosk and looked at the Droid Incredible, Droid 2, and Droid X - which I believe are all LCD panels - and they all had good to great viewing angles.
I'm wondering if it is an issue similar to the MT4G where HTC was using 2 different panel types. If this is the intended quality of the screen I'm pretty disappointed. Fortunately this phone isn't for me and my girlfriend doesn't mind it. As bad as Samsung is I enjoy the SAMOLED screen on my Vibrant. I think I will pass up on the EVO and the Shift and wait to see what Sprint debuts in the next few months.
I think you have a bit of an unreasonable expectation there. Its a phone. You're supposed to look directly a it.

Can you post some pictures similar to the one in the MT4G thread for comparison? A return is definitely warranted if the screen quality is abnormal.

Well part of the hostility is that a lot of posts are started here basically just to ***** about something and what not. And people get tired of it.
Also something like this is very subjective because a lot of people wouldn't expect a device like this to be viewable from 120 degrees, because why would you want to view it like that.
If you don't like the display then thats fine, just don't buy the phone and then start to ***** about it.
Personally, I haven't noticed any viewing angle problems, but I'm usually viewing it from the intended viewing angle. (or pretty close).
I do notice some washing out at 120 degree or greater, but I can barely read whats on the screen, so it really doesn't matter.
Perhaps the Epic 4g is the phone for you if you just want to be able to view your phone while laying in bed next to it... (i kid i kid) but seriously perhaps the Epic (Galaxy S line) is the way for you to go.

You're complaining about a imaginary problem on a phone you're not even going to use, yet your girlfriend doesn't mind this supposed issue? Most people view the display right smack dab in front of them. Its not a tv, you're not going to be ten feet away from the device trying to use it are you?

I don't notice any unreasonable amount of washing out (or any at all really) at ANY angle. I imagine if you're standing in sunlight it will, but inside my work, I can pretty much view it at angles up to 180 degrees. Can I read the icons? Of course not, but the screen isn't "washed out" at that angle either.

well many of us read the posts because we genuinely want to help somebody if theyre having a legit problem so "dont like it dont read it" doesnt exactly work in a forum like this....i agree the hostility should def come down a level but I also agree this is basically a non-issue, at least for 95% of people out there who dont need to look at their phone from any sort of angle....but to be fair to the 5% left it is a legit concern so def no need for any hostility at all really.....

Can you post a picture similar to this (including the HTC clock widget)? I'd like to compare to see if my phone is in fact defective.

I agree that viewing angles aren't that big a deal on a cell phone. The device is really meant to be looked at directly and from a close range. Hell, this could even be a privacy feature! With this kind of screen, the guy next to you on the bus can't read your emails!
BS aside, I think this is a non-issue for the vast majority of people. If it's a big deal to you, return it. Get a Sammy phone. It's your money. You should get what makes you happy.

so the "washing out" you're talking about is mainly on white areas on the screen? Mine does that at angles over about 75 degrees, but that's to be expected with most (if not all) LCD panels so it's certainly not unreasonable or even noticeable to me.
Why are you trying to view it at that kind of an angle anyway?
I will mention that I can still read what's on your screen at that angle, even if the colors aren't accurate to what they are viewing straight. Heck, I can read text messages on my phone at nearly 90 degrees. They're obviously off color, but the text shows up just fine.

It doesn't only affect the white areas on the screen, i.e. the numbers in the clock are supposed to be black. Check out the Mytouch 4G thread I linked in my original post, it shows side-by-side comparisons of 2 different panel types on the MT4G - one exhibiting this washed out effect. It's been speculated by developers whom sifted through source code that the "bad" panel is a Sharp panel and the "good" panel is Sony. I'm not savvy on LCD panels so I don't know if this is an inherit trait of LCD technology. I do know that I've seen devices such as the Droid Incredible (LCD version), MT4G with a good panel, and others that do not have this problem. The high quality IPS panels on the iPhones don't exhibit this either.
It's not that I use the phone at these angles. This is just the best way to show the washing out effects.
compared to my htc aria my shift's screen is washed out, the darks arent as dark, the colors aren't as vibrant.
I have friends with regular EVOs (launch day evo's not current) and the screen on those screens are horribly washed out. The evos at the sprint store are much better..
I don't think the shift's screen is at all bad, but there is room for improvement.

Not massive bleeding but it was still there so I managed to get it swapped out today thankfully! I didn't want it getting worse. Seems this was a big problem on the Prime so why havent Asus fixed it for the Pad?
I've got a little from one edge, but not ebough to bother me. Does this get worse? I assumed it would stay as is.

I thought over time it would get worse? My replacement model has no signs of this bleeding.
Can you even see that much light bleed during normal use? I feel like as long as I'm not looking at a black screen with nothing else close to the edge I would never notice this.

True but it was bugging me, I started to notice it on the Gallery (Black Screen) then on Boot Up.
Seems I spoke too soon as the sun is setting here and I just started to notice it again...rubbish. Is it a actually fault or just something I have to ignore and live with?
Not sure how your new one looks, but mine has slightly less bleed than your pics show. I don't notice it at all except during the boot screen, so I'm living with mine. but to each his own, I guess you'll have to decide whether or not its acceptable.
Judging by other people's reports, light bleed is normal with these tablets. The key is to find one with as little light bleed as possible. The first one I got had massive light bleed around all sides, especially in the lower right corner. I exchanged it because of a dead pixel, and my new one has light bleed, too, but it's only across the bottom edge and very minimal. I don't even notice it in the status bar (black and always at the bottom edge of the screen) at all during use, only during boot-up. So, I'm satisfied with my replacement's slight amount of light bleed based on the light bleed from the first one and the reports on this forum.

I think it's normal that the Asus TF300 has light bleed,I got my new Asus yesterday and I have same issue.
Mine has a minimal amount of bleed at the bottom.
Only notice it during boot tho.
Not worth swapping and getting something worse.
Mine also has light bleed, but its not as bad as the first one i had.
I don't think i notice bleed so I'm fortunate.

Hey guys, I just started to notice this on my new 32. I never noticed it on the 16 I had before this (but I wasnt looking for it either). After a lot of research it seems this is normal for IPS screens. Ive seen some pretty pad Ipads on you tube. Anyway Ive attached a picture of mine at its worse. This was while viewing a solid black jpg. Does this look like a bad case, or minimal? Ive already exchanged/ returned several tablets for different reasons so Im hoping not to need to again.
It's kind of hard to tell with the jpeg quality. It makes everything look kind of pixelated.
I'd say, though, that the top two corners look pretty bad. The bottom right corner isn't looking so hot either, but it's better than the same corner on my first TF300.
As for whether you should return it, does it bother you a lot? How often do you look at your screen when it's pure black like that? If you think you can ignore it, save yourself the hassle of another return. If it's going to ruin your tablet experience, return it, and try again.
I received mine two days ago, I immediately did the update and I never had any flickering issues.

That is not light bleeding, but banana bleeding. There are giant yellow swaths on the display
Seriously though, that is part of the issue with this type of tech if wanting to price for mass consumer range (for the panel volumes purchased). It gets expensive with the needed design / production specs and the substrate layer to avoid the light bleed. The tolerance in production also means some will bleed more than others. The iPad 1 had issues, but Apple were able to get better quality panels, due to economy of scale to lower cost for the better quality panels.
The Toshiba Excite appears to have even more bleed than the average 300, but the A510 has zero light bleed (reviews support this observation). Of course, most folks buying the 300 are wanting to use the keyboard, so the A510 is not an option.
Light Bleed Fix (if your brave)
Ok, Im in the middle of a fix that I have found for the light bleed. Its actually not all that hard. Im going to write up a full how to once Im done, but just wanted to let anyone know thats interested that it is absolutely fixable.
Ive been through so many tabs I lost count. Im on my 4th TF300, so needless to say frustrated. All returned or exchanged for one reason or another. This one works great, except for the light bleed. So I got brave and decided to tear into it to see what I could do. Ill get into all the details later, but Ive attached before and after pics of one of the worst light bleed spots. The first pic just shows my whole screen in all its light bleeding glory. The second shows it after I have taken it apart, and shows one of the worst spots. Which in the lower right at notification area. The 3rd shows what it looks like after I fixed it. I have about 3 more areas Im going to work on, but wanted to let you guys see its fixable. The best thing about it is that if your careful you can do this without voiding any warranty. Theres one one sticker inside that is the kind that voids warranty if broken and its not hard to avoid.
Anyway see attached pics for my progress so far.

Let me guess you followed the thread in Prime's forum about fixing it yourself. Did you loosen the screws in the lcd? I been wanting to do this, but since I might not have the right tools I don't want to screw up the warranty. I'm going to check if the service center near my house can do this for me so it stays in warranty. I pretty much have the same light bleeds as you.

Actually no I didn't know there was a thread about it already, But that's pretty much what I'm doing. If there's a thread about it already I won't bother, I was just trying to help.
Dude I didn't mean it like that, I was really looking forward to your walkthrough since it will be 300 based. I was just asking where did you get the idea? Since I've been googling around and I found that on the Prime a couple of weeks ago. Keep doing the walkthrough please, I want to see how you did it? what tools you used? how did you avoid breaking the warranty tapes? etc.

The idea came from a YouTube video that I watched, For transformer prime but the way he took apart was totally different. I'll keep trying and if I succeed I'll post a tutorial unfortunately I don't have a way of video taping but I can write a walk-through.

Display Issues Thread

We can discuss display issues here. Here's my situation:
Let's be clear: MOST display have problems. My iMac I'm posting this from is tinted yellow on the left half and magenta toward the bottom right corner; my Nexus 7 2013 had edge light bleeding; 3 iPad minis retinas had edge yellowing; I returned and exchanged my way through 5 iPhones 5ses and 5 Nexus 5s before I found one without display problems; etc. But these faults are subtle enough that the general population isn't sensitive to them, or else they mostly don't care.
Sure enough, my Note 4 has display issues. I'm not sure if this is Mura Effect stuff or just bad quality control. Check it out below.

The picture above doesn't do it justice, it's a lot more apparent when you've been using the actual display in real life for awhile. Also disregard the scan lines. But notice about 1/3 of the way from the top, there's a subtle horizontal line where the display below it is more gray, and more yellow above it. And if you divide the display diagonally from the bottom left to the top right, then the left half is tinted yellow compared to the right half, especially toward the upper left corner of the display. And the entire right edge of the display is tinted magenta, which is more apparent toward the bottom right.
Above I used the Note 4's Screen Write ability to document the imperfections as I see them.
Don't get me wrong, the display is nice. But I will likely have to flip through several devices until I end up with a good display. Are you guys noticing some Mura Effect problems, or other problems? Talk about them here.
PROTIP: to see the Mura Effect imperfections on your Note 4 display, grab this image and view it in a pitch black room and manually dim the display to the lowest level.
All I see is someone who is a perfectionist
So far I haven't had a display Issue. I keep at full brightness at all times.
Anyway, I know people are having issues and I am sorry you are too.

I dont notice this at all on my white note 4. Even if it so faint then the difference is neglible. Its not really worth the trouble going through 10 different devices just to get rid of this effect. But i turned off all lights and its night here so no outside lights and i see nothing at all wrong with my display. i also dont see anything wrong in your images either.

I see grey lines on the image that I'm not even sure is an artifact of the display or what you purposely have showing on the screen n I do see the slight greying 1/3 the way down, but again, what do you have displaying on the phone to represent this and how do you know that image itself isn't creating the artifacts, not the display?

The gray lines are from the camera, I edited the OP to reflect that. The image is just a plain white image, the same one i used to demonstrate display problems with the nexus 5 earlier this year. It's not that i get unlucky, it's that displays usually have problems. The apple store manager let me replace my 5s to get a good one because he acknowledged the edge yellowing and that colors were inconsistent even across the 10 display models. He told me outright that displays are calibrated within certain limits, and every display will appear differently, but that edge yellowing is an actual problem and he could see it after I pointed it out. I can't be blamed that most people aren't bothered by these problems, or that they're too insensitive to notice them. And again, the pictures don't do it justice...we're talking about a display you hold in front of your face live and stare at for hours daily.
On my current Note 4 what i mainly notice is that the gradient, where the yellow tint of the upper left gradually blends into the magenta of the bottom right. For me that's noticeable constantly. I can't make myself not see it, it's pretty apparent despite the image in the OP not showing it off well. As for the horizontal separation between the milky upper 1/3 and the gray lower 2/3, I'm only actually aware of that whenever i scroll, because eyes are made to notice contrast so it becomes apparent whenever my eyes are tracking something as it passes that border.

Also, not necessarily a problem just something i noticed, this display gets SUPER bright in direct sunlight (its max brightness is only allowed on auto brightness, you cant set it there manually). That makes all colors super washed out, its weird, but so far not a problem. What im writing about here though is something I've never noticed on an lcd displays: whenthe note 4 SAMOLED is at this max brightness because youre viewing it in direct sunlight, if you use your finger to cast a shadow on the display, it makes this really bizarre inverted shadow effect. Try it out, its kinda crazy!
Hey am having tmobile send me new device because of this issue,for me it was really noticeable in landscape mode browsing Web at night once eyes start to adjust to screen brightness, I can see on mine were one side is whiter and the other a greyish purple hue.

My note 3 did not have this issue.
It's highly unlikely that you're going to score a unit with absolutely consistent white balance across the display. I haven't had an AMOLED screen that doesn't have it to some degree, and i've had many. Even my Note 4 has it, but it's very difficult to see unless you're really looking for it.
When I first got the S4 a couple years ago I got a unit that was so bad that when looking at the keyboard in landscape it was clearly 2 totally different colors on each side, but I exchanged and got one that was much, much better, but still not completely 100% even. So you might try an exchange if you can, but don't expect absolute perfection. Most displays on most devices will have some degree of imperfection if you look for it, whether it's white balance issues, back-light bleed, uneven brightness etc etc. An AMOLED panel is still likely to give you a better overall experience than a comparable LCD.
As many others have said in this forum, just try not to look too hard at the finest details ("mura" effect for example)...it's still mass produced hardware. If your screen is that noticeable though, exchange it.
I had this problem with my black note 4, my wife has the white one so it was clearly there when put side by side, tmobile said it was ok so i had to take her phone the next time and then they said it was bad. Something interesting, the white ones seem to not have this problem.
Yea got shipping info for new device today,should be here Monday,which ever one has least defect I'm gonna keep.

my gf has a white note 4 from vzw .. i have a black note 4 tmo.. the only thing i notice between our devices is that hers has a slight yellow tint but her display is a little brighter.. i have seen this with my old iphone's if i ever had to get a warranty replacement form apple .. the replacements always had a yellow tint but were brighter ..
so far no issues with my note 4 .. i got lucky this time around :good:

Dude is that the way it looks ALL THE time? Dude GO WITH THE WHITE ONE. I know I am I have the charcoal black and seems to be a bigger problem with the black ones than white I went in to the tmobile store and they had a white and black one. The black one was the same as mine (bluish white/warm color) compared to the WHITE note 4 the white looked great. Sure the black seemed brighter but I think that's what hurt the device in the first place. Sending mine in today or tomorrow already set.

I exchanged mine 2 times because they had dust under the screen . Too bad I didn't check the screen uniform last time.
Anyway I'm on my 3rd Note 4. I don't have yellow/blue/purple tilted part but the white is not uniform as I can tell the top half of my screen is a little bit dimmer. It's something that an average user wouldn't notice but I do because I'm extremely picky. Anyway my dad's note 3's screen has uniform white so maybe you can score a perfect amoled screen but then maybe you'd end up with another problem like dust or dead pixel.
Sometimes I hate myself for having such good eyes lol

My black Note 4 also has some issues with the screen uniformity. My right side has a pink hue as described above. I don't have the yellow tint on the left. Also under direct sunlight the screen creates a strange effect, it looks like the colors are inverted. If you place your hand to create a shadow over the screen then the colors look correct without the inversion, it is a very strange phenomena. I am trying to decide whether to exchange it for a white one or get another black one.
Are the white version somehow better in quality control?

Mine was looked like this. And everyone in the BestBuy from where I got this said this is NORMAL. Fortunately I could able to get a replacement from the other BestBuy. The new one is still not perfect (it looks similar to yours), but I can live with it since I don't want to send it for Samsung's Warranty service.
(My local BestBuy said they can exchange the smartphone for only one time. If I have a problem with the replacement, I have to send it back to the manufacturer for repair. I couldn't find this from policy in BestBuy website, but that's what they said to me.)

[ISSUES] Known issues, discussion and workarounds

Why am I starting this thread?
- To make a proper issue thread, most users are reporting issues on various threads.
- If someone is to buy a S6, or has got a new one, they can resort to this thread for checking their handsets.
- Issues can me major and minor, and considering we have paid a fat buck, we cant settle for less.
CAUTION:
- read this thread only if you want info about your device and for cross checking.
- Once you know your device has any of the below issues, it will bug you forever!! so dont blame me, I'm just trying to be informative.
1 ) Uneven screen, Uneven brightness, Uneven color, Gradient on grays, Pink/Yellow tints:
Common issue with amoleds, Amoleds are manufactured by deposition of various layers on a Substrate (Glass, plastic). Then these layers are exposed to light in a procedure called as "Fine metal masking" . During this process light gets unevenly distributed across the big plate of glass from which our displays are cut. Why does this happen? The technology isnt as mature yet, earlier in 2010, it was worse, now it has improved but not perfect. Due to uneven exposure of light while manufacturing, some parts of the mother-plate do not get equal light and hence we get tints, gradients on grays, and uneven whites (pink tints). The more your display is cut from the center of the plate, the better is the accuracy, the more it is cut from the sides, we get uneven tints.

What can you do about this? will this be fixed in a software update?
- NO, no update can fix it.
- only a screen replacement, or a RMA can.
- Replace your device if you cannot stand the tint, or if its bothering you (After all you have paid a lot for it)
- EVERY Amoled will suffer from this issue, ranging from negligible, to intolerable.
The note 3, S4 and Nexus 6 are affected by this issue majorly. Many live with it, some go for replacements and end up in a cycle of RMA's. If your display is tolerable or if it does not affect you, then dont go for a replacement.
2) Color shift at various angles
The display is glass, and it will show some rainbowing to an extent. Color shifts on pure whites are noticable . This does not mean your display is defective, it is just the way it is.
3) Auto-Brightness not working
The S6 shuts down brightness settings at low power to save battery. Make sure you're charged. Still if it does not work properly, check if you have any screen protector or tempered glass covering the ambient light sensor beside the earpiece. To cross check if your ambient light sensor is working properly, use CPU Z, go into the sensors tab and check for the light sensitivity, it should range from 0 to 30 or even more at brighter lights. if it is showing less value or no value, your sensor is not working. Get your device replaced or serviced.
4) Lines on display
Here's something new that I noticed today. If you subject your phone to direct sunlight, and full brightness, there are clear visible lines on the display. It is a manufacturing thing and it does not bother me. I do not use my phone is sunlight. I could not get a good picture, so I drew it in paint to show what it looks like.

I dont know how widespread this issue is, but its there on mine, clearly visible on lighter colors like (cyan, yellow) ONLY in direct sunlight. As it is not reducing my usability to any extent, I am not replacing or getting my screen serviced.
These markings look like some techie circuit lines. No display is perfect, there ought to be some or the other thing on it.
5) Flash always lit
This is a well known issue, as of now we cannot do anything about it. Even when the phone is switched off, the flash is on dimly. My guess is, it is the way it is, there is no current leaking into it as the phone removes current from the Motherboard when switched off. So this looks like the flash is manufactured like that, maybe some glowing material like phosphorous, (IDK). The flash otherwise works just fine. To see the issue, go into a dark room and observe the flash area, you will see a faint glow. Here is a picture by tenxo
6) Phone heating up
The phone will heat up on heavy use, it is very common on androids. I did not even needed to mention this issue as its not an issue. I read some people complaining, so I included this.
Androids will heat up. you cannot do anything about it. My Galaxy S3 and Nexus 6 used to heat like a frying pan (45 deg to 49 deg). Even my S6 heats up so much on heavy use, or while the Wifi Hotspot is on. (Lol. Hotspot). Anything above 60 deg is not normal. I have never experienced it, even on over clocking the CPU on my previous phone. The fast adaptive charger will heat the phone up, and it is normal.
7) Regional Locks:
Say, you have brought a S6 which is for some other country. There is a thing called regional locks, wherein you need to activate the phone using the same country sim. Idk why samsung has done this, but it is regionally restricted for activation. Once you have activated the phone, you most probably should be able to use it anywhere else. (Cant say as I havent tested it). How to remove regional lock? No info that I know of in that particular matter. If anyone has anything to share on this subject, please leave a comment as it will be helpful to others.
8) Heart Rate sensor always on?
Uninstall google fit, reboot the phone. Samsung health app has some problem with google fit. Uninstall google fit, and everything will be fine.
9) Capacitive keys always on?

10) High RAM Usage.
Apparently, a common issue. Samsung is really bad when it comes to ram management. It's a known issue that there are memory leaks in lollipop. Luckily software patches will be available soon, try closing all apps or disabling a few Samsung ones which consume ram. For me it is not a big deal as I am not facing any any lag whatsoever in any apps even after such higher ram consumption. The only problem is when apps are switched, the app may force close. Wait for an update, or flash cyanogenmod when it is available. Meanwhile try other stock custom roms in the forum.
Update :
After some minor updates over the last month, I've noticed some improvements in RAM usage. Earlier my ram consumption used to idle around 700mb free, now it's around 1 GB free. I have the same apps, same usage and I've installed more apps over time and still it has got better.
11. Uneven capacitive buttons:
One xda user reported the button backlit is uneven, I do not use the button backlight, it is always off for me. If you notice this issue please report.
12. Scratches on the screen
Scratches are not common and highly unacceptable. If you're noticing scratched screens, get your device replaced.

That's great. Enjoy a flawless phone.
Minor issue here, but me and others have noticed that the Samsung keyboard keeps re-enabling itself making the input selection notification show up in the notification menu. Does these consistently a few minutes after disabling it.
Will most likely be fixed in a future update, otherwise it could be possible to disable the keyboard completely via adb even though unrooted.
I have the tint issue, unfortunately, even after one phone replacement.
Regarding the lines under sunlight I believe it's related to the touch grid? I remember seeing it on my s4 too.

Touch grid would be uniform squares, this looks like a circuit
I've had tint issue that was bugging me. Getting replacement Friday. I will keep replacing until I'm happy

Good to know that my friend. After looking at many of your comments, even I decided not to settle for this tint issue and returned mine. Over here in India, they issue a Dead on Arrival certificate and I need to take it back to the retailer where I bought it from. Since I am out of town, I may just travel over the weekend to get this replaced or send it along with someone who is traveling. Hope the replacement turns out fine.
Annoying issue, which is popular in S5 too. "Searching using GPS" keeps popping up. There are suggestions to reinstall weather app. But none of the suggestions works.

very high RAM and is killing apps all over the place..This is the only issue that I have ATM on a otherwise perfekt phone

Looks like a majority of us have this. Even I could see that on mine. Dont bother about it unless you have other issues.

Exact same on mine! . Im going to attach this pic in the post. Looks like it is on most of the devices. It aint a defect, its just manufactured that way.

Yeah, but it shows up in the images as well, so nothing to do with the screen.

Looks like you have a dust particle on the lens, under the glass.
Hello, point 3 (auto-brightness) does not show any number.
Also one sensor is uncalibrated.
Is this ok?
