HTC & Sprint Changed Specifications on Evo?

I'm just getting more and more disappointed with HTC & Sprints recent practices..
Few weeks ago I went on the htc website and looked at the tech specs, and i'm almost certain it said 800x480 resolution as we all know..
The same thing on the sprint page.
Now, ever since the Nova v. Epson debacle they took down every mention of the phones resolution
Leading one to believe that the Epson units don't even have the same resolution.
Is it possible that these have not only a different screen, but even different resolution and no ****ing press release or information?
What the hell is going on here? WHY would they take down that kind of information?
I mean FFS how can you call it tech specs while leaving out key info?
I have a bunch of problems with my nova 003 phone right now, light leakage, screen separation, stuck pixel etc.
Now I have to worry about getting an even worse unit if I replace it!
All this added onto the 30fps cap and the bull**** with disabling the stock android launcher is making me a very unhappy camper..

I've gone through every bit of information they have on the website and NO mention of resolution anywhere..
The only other possible reason is that they don't want us to know that it has a lower res. than the iphone. (lol)

It all sounds too convenient though, why wouldn't they put something like that up?
Before the iphone4, WVGA was considered an excellent resolution.
The strangest part is that similar phones have that info easily accessible from htc.com.
So what is it, HTC too lazy to put up tech specs? Or are they trying to conceal something..
We already know that their are 2 variants of the evo displays, so it's not that far-fetched..
Finally, I know it can be done, but how do we check res on our phones? Can someone with an epson device chime in?

Is your screen so bad that you have to worry about what somone wrote about it? Sheesh, I ripped Avatar from Blueray to 800X480 and it looks awesome on my phone. No one I have showed it to has said..... man you shoulda got AMOLED.

The worry is that i'll replace my phone, and my old problems will still persist and i'll also have a worse quality display..
I wasn't sure that WVGA meant 480x800 or greater. I thought it meant that ballpark..

i woudlnt' believe the resolution until someone has done tests. if any one follows tv technology, you'd know how many tvs lied about their own resolution. games as well.

To be completely fair, you would expect that response from someone that has never seen AMOLED or doesn't have one next to a TFT panel. If you've only had ground beef your whole life, steak is going to be so much better once you get a taste.

To be fair - Taste is subjective. It's like saying that SteakHouse 1 is better than Steakhouse 2. Not to everyone even after they have visited both.
I have the HTC incredible as well and I do not like the dots in the text. It's looks grainy. Pictures are very nice but small text is not as defined(anti-aliased) as TFT. Once again subjective to my own eyes.

HTC's page definitely needs an update. Doesn't the Evo also support WiFi N protocol as of the latest updates, and earlier hacks? :]

I think with the discovery of the use of Novatek and Epson screens in the phones, people are looking at HTC as a bottom feeder when it comes to parts.
I'm an A+ tech, had to teardown and put back together many machines, and if you looked at the different part numbers that existed for the same part (i.e. HP laptop LCD may have four different part numbers, the system board may have two, etc.), then you see HTC's use of two different parts for what it is, nothing.

some ignorance going on this thread. You should be weary of any replacement parts. you are paying for a $500 product; maybe it's biggest selling point being it's screen, and you're saying who cares?
Laptops often replace their screens with cheaper ones. HDTVs, eg. sony have replaced their higher end models with cheaper totally different panels (think $500 generic tv quality) after stellar reviews have been out. This is well documented.
The fact that manufacturers get away with false advertisement so often should be warning to keep on your guard.
If you think this is paranoia, you are not an educated consumer. That's ok, but don't insult those of us who are.

@mrono.. I am well aware of the differences between the various standardized terms for display resolution..
However, the W in WVGA stands for Wide.
Are you telling me that 799x480 isn't wide vga?
I wasn't proposing that the newer ones have VGA res or something outrageous like that, but it's not out of the scope of imagination that there are differences between the epson and novatec screens apart from contrast/brightness..
It is obvious that the two displays are different, and if I got one with an off hue or the worst one because I couldn't put up with the screen separation, i'd be pissed.
So this is me covering my bases..
Which is only natural since recently it seems like they've been getting parts from wherever they can..
I'm not "complaining" about anything I just want to be sure I'm not making a mistake..
Very annoyed at all the assholes saying, just enjoy the phone.
I never mentioned anything about not liking the phone, which is why i'm REPLACING it and not returning it.

To most of us, these are not phones with extra gimmicks, but mini-computers with the ability to make calls..
They're expensive gadgets and have no reason not to work as expected.
It's not about being unable to accept a phones flaws, I accepted the G1's many flaws until it broke.
I'm trying to make an INFORMED decision about whether or not to replace my current evo with another possibly worse one within my 30-day window..
My only purpose in creating this thread was to spur conversation about the obviously different versions of evo's out there, and thus make a decision.

Sticking with the Evo

I reserved an Epic 4G for pick up today from the Sprint Store but decided to play around with a demo before buying it. Good thing I did. As the title suggests, I ended up walking out of the store with my Evo still activated.
The Epic has some things going for it. The appearance of the screen is amazing, as every single review has said already. The keyboard feels pretty good but unless I'm composing a long e-mail or typing up a word document, I'd rather just use the soft keyboard for quick texts and brief e-mails. The GPU on the Epic is also much better than the Epic. I downloaded Quadrant and the 3D graphics tests were hitting 30-50 FPS range where the Evo would only get to 15-20 FPS. Also, the Epic has Gorilla Glass...enough said about that.
Now for the bad. The soft keys are a pain in the ass when they dim. You can't tell what you are pressing until you've already hit the wrong one. The camera is not that great. I took a picture of the inside of the store with both the Evo and Epic. Both cameras were set to their max resolutions with minimum image compression. On the Evo, I could zoom in on the snapped picture and make out the weave in the carpet. But on the Epic, all I could see were colorful blobs. You wouldn't think the screen size would matter much but this was also very noticeable when using the soft keyboard and tapping on links with the browser zoomed out. Much easier to do on the Evo. Quadrant also gave the Epic (2.1) 900 vs the Evo (2.2) 1400 score index. I wish I had a 2.1 Evo to compare scores but that was all I had. Subjectively, I liked the look and feel of the Evo more than the Epic. The Evo looks slick and feels dense like a piece of jewelry where as the Epic looks like, well, a plastic phone.
Everything else was a draw. If I did not already have the Evo, I'd have a much harder time deciding which one to walk out of the store with. However, since I already had the Evo, I felt it wasn't worth the hassle to switch phones for a questionably minor change.

if you guys own an evo, I don't think there is enough benefit to outweigh the new price unless you need the latest and greatest cpu/gpu. But for someone coming in looking for a new phone, the Epic wins handsdown. I mean there is no real comparison here. I've been using my Vibrant for a month now and literally, every other screen I look at looks like crap. Including the evo. I've used my friends evo and it is laggy as well. But either way, a phone is a phone right?
This is without 2.2 lol. Once 2.2 hits you can expect 3000+ The pic below is not mine but mine hits 2250, every thing/program/etc runs instantly. This so called lag fix is nothing special. Other manufacturers uses it on their phones not sure why Sammy didn't include it from the factory. I don't think any other phone out there in the WOrld ever hit over 2000 lol.

I am pretty sure Caulk has a screen shot of his hitting 3000+. Apparently it is not hard to mess with the scores and that the way it currently determines the scores is very flawed.

I just came back from a Sprint store expecting to be absolutely overwhelmed by the Epic screen. I was not. In fact, I was underwhelmed.
I honestly was expecting to be blown away. But I was not. In fact, I think the Evo display looks better! Why?
1. Color seemed to be oversatured
2. The screen is REALLY pixelated. I mean not just a little. More pixelated than an iPhone 3GS, I kid you not. I was shocked. I was expecting it to be really crisp since it's same resolution as the EVO on a screen that's physically smaller. But seriously, why hasn't anyone mentioned this? It's hard to spot pixels on the evo screen, that's absolutely not the case with the Epic. The Evo screen looks like a Retina display compared to the Epic. Go to a Sprint store if you haven't and see it for yourself. Again, i am EXTREMELY surprised no one has mentioned it, even in reviews.
3. White is not white, it's blue.
Everything else was really nice. But I was seriously underwhelmed with the screen.

I went in to look at since still under 30 days. Kept my evo. Screen is really nice but damn that .3 inch is a killer. Also didn't like the bottom buttons. Nice keyboard. Had a tp2 which I loved the keyboard. But I always went back to the screen on it. It looked like the settings for contrast was all the way up. I'm sticking to my evo. Wasn't impressed with the epic. Just the screen. For what I do or what phones are capable to do right now with apps the evo is fine.

I reserved an epic but bought an evo last friday.the evo is smaller edge to edge but has a larger screen.there may be problems with the epic gps and many more roms are currently available for the evo.

huh? this makes no sense. People that have the ability to trade in their current phones for the new phone are not doing so because they don't like it.
I don't even have a choice, but I wouldn't get it because of its smaller screen and physical keyboard. I do wish the Evo had a better CPU/GPU combo though.

Dude, trust me. If the Epic was better, I would have gotten it. I can change phones like I change clothes. Also, your post has irony written all over it lmao.

I'll have to stroll into a radioshack some time soon to check it out. I've had my Evo for 5 days so I still have time to switch. I've been enjoying my Evo so far though so it'll be hard for Samsung to win me over.

After you do can you please also confirm that the screen is Pixelated as hell? My brother has an iPhone 4 and kept rubbing in how he couldn't see pixels on the Retina display, until I showed my EVO and he couldn't either. lol.
The Epic's screen is so pixelated it actually makes it a deal breaker to me. I am just stunned no one else has mentioned it, it's just so glaring to me.
P.s.: I don't think radioshack stores have working models on display. Just dummies.

You might just be right. I saw a Tmobile Vibrant on demo at RadioShack last week and it was playing a movie and it looked really pixelated. I wasn't sure if it was just the movie or what since it was stuck on some kind of demo mode. I'll report back as soon as I'm able to play around with an Epic.

im getting flashbacks
this is a Hero VS Samsung Moment decision all over again. From the Hero's light leakage to the moments blue hue and a-moled screen. Even then the Samsung moment had a better processor. I chose the Samsung moment because of the build quality and regretted the decision. I can assume the Epic wont be treated like a bastard step child. I think more people were happy with the Hero than the Samsung moment. Part of that , i recognize is the fact that Samsung never advertised the Moment. I am going out on a limb and predict that this phone is too large (thickness) for mass appeal. Regardless of how you paint it and how many specs you can throw out, it is not as sexy as that "idevice". I hope i made the right choice purchasing the EVO no more bulging pockets!

Any evo owner anticipating the t-mo g2 though?

I'm assuming any current Evo owners that dislike the Vibrant/Epic would also dislike the G2, the G2 and Vibrant/Epic seem to be in the same class.
The only two things I would want from the Vibrant/Epic is its CPU/GPU combo and 16GB on-board NAND, everything else is a con to me, compared to the Evo.

An Evo user's thoughts on the Epic...

My immediate first impression: It looks better in person that it does in pictures online. I thought it looked pretty bland when I first saw it online, but in person, it's not bad. It definitely looks better than the Samsung Captivate on AT&T, but I still think that the Vibrant looks the best. Once I picked it up, I was surprised by how light it was. Initially, I was disappointed; I thought for a split-second that it was a dummy model that I was holding. It was noticeably lighter than the Evo. I couldn't, however, decide if this was good or bad. The lack of heft puts the Epic 4G dangerously close to being perceived as "cheap and plastic-y". The phone (as well as the other Galaxy S phones) just didn't feel that solid to me. Especially compared to phones that have some noticeable heft to them, like the Evo and Nexus One. I feel that if it were dropped from waist-high, it would shatter into a million pieces or something.
The lack of heft aside, the phone feels really good in the hand. It's rounded corners fell better than the Evo. But because of the keyboard, the phone is pretty thick. I noticed that trying to use the phone with one hand can be difficult sometimes (and I have fairly large hands), especially when trying to reach things at the top of the screen (like the notification bar).
The screen: I have mixed feelings about Samsung's Super AMOLED screen. When I turned on the screen for the first time, one word popped in my head: OVERRATED (the same word that came to me when seeing the iPhone 4's "retina display" for the first time). I honestly don't see the hype. Yes, if you're looking at a picture / movie, the colors look amazing. But looking at text, on the other hand, is a different story. The main problem that I had with the SAMOLED screen is the "screen door effect". You can see the individual pixels! What's worse, you can see them without even looking hard. They are just there, in your face. I have perfect vision, and I have to put my Evo pretty close to my face in order to make out individual pixels. On the Epic, you can see them everywhere. It's really bad when looking at text on a white background (like on almost every website). You can see the white lines in-between the black of the letters. It's like looking at a mini chess board. I would rather take a regular AMOLED, TFT LCD, or Retina display any day of SAMOLED
Ahhh, the keyboard. This is the ONLY reason I even considered swapping the Evo for an Epic. In short: it's really good. It's one of the best landscape keyboards I've ever used. The keys are really clicky, and are a nice size. My only complaint is that I wish they were domed more. Because they are flat, my fingers tended to slide over to adjacent keys. I'm sure with time I would be really fast & accurate on it. The only landscape keyboard that's better than this one is the one on the Touch Pro 2. That this is amazing.
I'm not gonna talk too much about the software, since we all know what Android is about. What I will say is that TouchWiz isn't that bad. It's actually better than the skin Motorola has put on the Droid2 and DroidX. It's not as good as Sense UI, but it's definitely better than stock Android. Overall, everything I did on the phone was super fast. Scrolling was smooth, and it didn't lag at all. No complaints.
Minor annoyances: -There is a dedicated smiley button on the keyboard… wtf. It would be much more useful it they put the @ symbol there, instead of it. -For some reason, Samsung likes putting the lock/power button on the right side of the phone. Not a big deal on the other Galaxy S phones, but every time I would lock/unlock the phone, the keyboard would move/open a little.
Final thoughts: It's a really good phone. If I had the choice today to either get a free Epic or a free Evo, I'm about 65% sure I'd take the Evo. If I was a new Sprint customer, there is almost no way to justify taking this phone over the Evo, especially seeing as how it's $50 more… Unless, of course, you abso-freakin-lutely need a physical keyboard.

I echo the same thoughts as you and still have my evo, i will try the epic out for 30 days and see if it grows on me but I have slight evo withdrawals. The physical keyboard is nice, I feel like I would miss having that option.
The screen is growing on me, I really love how readable it is in the sun and the colors and contrast are really great.
Another thing you left out is how incredibly fast this phone is. Even at 2.1 without CM6 it blows the EVO out of the water in every way, there is virtually no lag and you don't see the typical tearing or jitterness you get on the EVO. I can't even imagine how smooth it will be when 2.2 is on here...
The one thing that will determine whether I keep it is if the development community will be as good as the EVO. The EVO dev community from the start was bursting with life but the epic dev community seems rather flat and slow so far.
Another concern is Samsungs commitment to keeping the phones up to date and bug free. Something I don't have too much faith in as I saw how they pretty much ignored Samsung Moment customers.

I also own both an EVO and the Epic. My decision to switch was based on the keyboard and the processor speed. Both lived up to my expectations. The speed actually exceeded my expectations, whereas the keyboard isn't as good for games as I thought it would be. Wish it had a more game-like dpad. I think EVERYONE is pissed off about the decision to have a dedicated smiley button.
I'm actually very impressed with the screen. Unfortunately if you look closely you can see the pixels... but only when it's still. I honestly think it's mind bogglingly good when playing games or watching movies. The size of the EVO's screen is definitely a plus. So big. But I can see my Epic SO MUCH BETTER in direct sunlight. Even with auto-brightness on. With my EVO, I had to manually crank it up to 100% to get even a slight idea what I was looking at.
I actually found it to be so much faster than the EVO (even with 2.2). Games feel soo much smoother. Especially 3D games. And I am a huge gamer. Also, surprisingly, TW isn't all that bad (as you said). I actually plan on keeping it for a while. On my EVO I ran launcher pro, but sense is nice too. The EVO has the edge in widgets. No manufacturer's UI has anything close to the same quality widgets that sense has.
I actually don't mind the weight of this phone. I know the EVO feels heavy and sturdy, but the reason the SGS phones are so light is because of their screen technology. Both phones have the same soft-touch back.
All in all, I'm really glad I made the switch. I'm having a lot of fun with the Epic. The only thing I miss from my EVO is the GPS... but we're getting a fix for this this month.
Oh and one more thing. Stock battery life on my Epic KILLS what I experienced on my EVO. I'll post some battery life results later. I almost think my phone is a fluke.
I'd definitely recommend this phone to a new Sprint customer. But that's just my vote. I'm sure other EVO users will chime in.

I feel the same to going to test it a little more for the next 2 weeks I am having 3g probelms for some reason a lot slower then my evo and the wifi shuts on and off but the screen is nice keyboard is awasome and is really fast but evo will make a come back

Which phone did you end up sticking with?

I too own both, feel like I miss stuff from the EVO, but I am giving the Epic more time to grow. love the screen and +1 for the camera, the Evo has failed me so many times with the camera. Some goods and some bads. if it had tilt/kickstand that would be sweet.

If you get the dock, it will work as a kickstand (its tilted just right). Unfortunately the dock isnt as portable and the headphone hack on the back wont work until the Epic gets 2.2 apparently.
What else do you miss from the EVO? Aside from the large screen? I also have an EVO and it just sits around. I never have any desire to pick it up... but I also refuse to sell it.

Ahm..both AMOLED and Super-AMOLED are pen-tile...aka what you showed in the picture above is for both...
Though there are many reasons to justify an Epic over an EVO..keyboard and screen are not the only reason that make the Epic shine...

He makes a good point. The difference with super amoled is that the touch sensor is integrated into the screen, making the overall display MUCH thinner and lighter. It's still AMOLED. Bright and brilliant. I absolutely love it.

i dont know man.. that picture in the first post doesnt look like my epic.. ( I know its a vibrant, i meant the screen) I even put it on the same contacts screen and i dont notice the pixels like i see them in that picture.. and i have 20/20 vision myself. This screen is amazing to me. especially coming from a touch pro 2. and my buddy has the evo.. His screen looks a little washed out next to mine. But it still looks good though dont get me wrong. I love the size of the evos screen and the kickstand is great too. I just needed the keyboard and processor speed which is why i ended up waiting for the epic to come out.. either way both phones are the best you can get on the market right now

heres a close up of how mine looks. i tried to use a similar screen.. this is with a 10mp camera in macro mode so its pretty close up.. the screen wasnt on full brightness. i can see the pixels in this picture because its so close but i cant get close enough with my eyes to even notice it

Considering the monitor size..the left picture is what you see..the right picture if what you would see with a magnifying glass...its not really a fair representation.
What he is seeing is not exactly individual pixels..more like jaggedness..this jaggedness is seen on some small fonts and on straight lines..mostly white lines..but even when text is jagged it is still perfectly readable..it kinda looks a little italic or sharpened lol...on things like bold font or zoomed in text its fairly un-noticable.

The evo's screen (and the Iphone's) look very washed out next to one another. Compare title screens for Angry Birds.

Please stop whining about Ink Marks/Blotches on SAMOLED display

Been a lurker here in xda-devs even before i got my s2 last july 2011, Am about to have my actual s3 in about 12 hours from now. It seems the Ink mark/blotches issue is getting out of hand and some individuals are even opting to have their unit replaced/serviced because of the said issue. So its about time I step up and DID my own investigation about this issue:

Bottom Line: Stop complaining about it, you wont see it in normal useage. thats all.
Important discovery: using this long shutter method also uncovers screen burn of my 11 month old S2 (upper part of the screen where time is) a good discovery heheh

and we can do something about it, thats the point...we can lower the brightness sets, use apps to fine tune our screen, use players that can decode well etc...no phone is perfect, but only the user can make it one...

Nice effect with the long exposure. Try it on black with the iphone?
I know it is called screen BURN IN, but the noticible view of the notification bar isn't necesarry a burn in. Plasma TVs have this as well, it isn't a burn in but rather a ghostly remain of the previous image that is slowly fading.
Try opening a black picture with white lines for 20min, then take the picture again, it might show the black lines instead of the notification bar.
You might, MAYBE, brake the myth about amoled burn in. How cool would that be

anyways, that is the same BLACK Screen test i did with the S2, heheeh it turned out bright (white hehe)on the Iphone 4, hehehe shows the contrast advantage of the SAMOLED because it is really BLACK heheh
the screen burn-in in the S2 is the actual corpse of the dead blue subpixels on the samoled

I have a couple of ink marks on my unit, I could put my dslr to use and grab a shot but the truth is I cant be bothered to do so.
My point is the problem does exist on the S3, however as stated above you dont see it during normal use so I'ma keep my unit.

I've never seen those on my gs2. I have a 4.5 inch one with the dreaded streaks, and it shows up on EVERYTHING, even on max brightness. That is a bigger concern. Hope the pentile gs3 doesnt have it. They are like lines on an old vhs tape, you know when you have to change the tracking to try and remove.
There's no use trying to be judgmental about people's complaints. Half the posts in threads with the smallest issue (camera jingly noise, warm phone, not perfect white) will tell the OP to return the phone. I just assume everyone on here is an asshole, including you!

cripes i love the attitude of people here...we have screen issues in the note threads and most of them uberly whine and complain and talk crap...but the ones who stuck it out are now reaping the benefits...honestly peeps...the problem is or may be there but it can be mended...lets wait for the actual s3 tests

The thing is that this problem exists since SGS1 days. Passing through the note, gnexus, etc. So you know that this problem is gonna be on the SGS3.
I have the ink marks too, i have a horizontal line about 0.5 CM long on the upperside of the screen.
In normal situation you can't see it, to see it you have to be looking right to that line in darkness watching a black image. I do that about 5 minutes before i go to sleep.
This is a non-issue for me. The problem is to the people who can see it under any light situation, i can understand them.
But if you are taking a picture in a complete dark ennviroment to find spots. Well, it's better to leave it there.....

@OP Im pleased for you that all of your marks are small and unnoticeable. Unfortunately, that is not the case for me... I have a large one right in the centre of the screen, visible without a DSLR.
And for the record. I can't see my marks either on high brightness like you used in your test. Try watching a film at night with the lights out, something with dark scenes like Tron. That's the real would situation i'm unhappy about.
I don't see why this issue shouldn't be discussed by people affected by it. Just my two cents.

Some people can and do see the spots and marks in normal use, and the fact is the quality of AMOLED screens and their durability varies a lot. This is what people are concerned about, don't generalize and say there's no problem.

i guess the point of the OP is valid somewhat for the reasons that some people here complain too much about screen problems and do nothing about it even if some able members suggest solutions...as said if you have a warranty and have noticeable screen issues then by God use that consumer right...and i hope you provide us with an accurate screen test of phones so as we may know what should be done...

Getting a replacement S6 due to screen.

So I just wanted to make a brief post and post a pic of my current S6 and why I'm sending it back for a replacement. I noticed today that about 1/4th or 1/5th of my screen (towards the bottom near the home button) is pinkish. It's visible mostly on white images, but now that I've seen it, I can't un-see it! I've read a few other posts here and there about screen discoloration, and I noticed that Erica Griffin touched upon it on one of her videos. I'm thinking that it has to be a hardware problem, cause I can't see how software would cause this issue. Pics below:

Nope...one of the two I bought look kinda like that. I think yours is worse actually.

I have the same problem but it's towards the left in the middle. But I have to really look for it. It seems to be worse at certain angles. My GF has a Note 4 and her whites look kinda rainbow-ish as well. So maybe it's a Samsung thing?
But like I said in another thread. I've had a 2 M8s, Nexus 5s, and Z3s side by side and none of the screens looked the same. Some looked better, some had different color temps, etc. So if you return it, there's a good possibility the next one won't look as good or have slight defects. I've seen people return phones several times until they were satisfied.

You are not crazy. I had the same problem with the S6 I preordered from tmobile but the pinkish/purplish tint was on the upper 1/3 of my screen. Yours does look worse but mine was pretty noticeable as well. It's actually most apparent on grey backgrounds with the tint section looking much darker than the non tinted part of the screen. And I agree, once you see it, you can't unsee it.
I actually looked for it right away when I got my phone because it's a fairly common problem on super amoled screens. Both the display units I look at at Best Buy had it to some extent, though not nearly as bad. I had it on both the S3 and the S4. I was pretty noticeable on the S4 but I just dealt with it. After how much I paid for the S6, I wasn't about to again.
Anyway, I got my replacement last night and am much happier with the screen. It still suffers from the uneven screen tone issue, but its far less noticeable and something I can definitely live with.

Hrm... how widespread is this issue. I am still on the fence about picking up the S6 and I certainly don't want one if it has uniformity issues. Maybe I'll wait for the second batch to come out before deciding.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. T-Mobile for me is pretty decent about returns. I noticed some scratches on the heart rate monitor glass and they're shipping one out (about a week delay). Seriously, take the chance it's worth it. This phone is amaze-balls.

Well what do you expect? The device isn't even officially launched yet, what people are getting are some pre-released units. Not to mention that the phone has almost no problems, except the flash and now the dead pixels, but the latter one is something which can happen to everybody. Nobody is immune to dead pixels....

I've never owned a Samsung smartphone before, but kept reading how amazing their displays are VS iphone and LG, but there are so many threads like this one.. Don't know what to think. I hope the one I get is fine.

This has nothing to do with preleased units. I got a retail unit that I preordered early. It's probably from the same batch that will be sent to T-Mobile stores on launch day.
This screen issue is something that affects just about all super amoled screens. I've checked out numbers galaxy phones (S4s, S5s, Notes, S6s, etc...) at verizon AT&T, best buy and nearly all suffered from this uneven screen color balance to some degree.
The thing is, in most situations the screen looked absolutely gorgeous. You really can only tell on certain backgrounds (mostly white and various shades of grey). That's why when you go to see the phone at a store with its demo on or casually play with it, you probably won't notice it. But once you get it home and have had a chance to really do things like reading a book against a white background, you'll eventually notice it. As as I've said before, once you see it, you'll always see it.
What matters is how much it'll bother you. My wife and brother-in-law didn't think it was a big deal and would not have exchanged it. My sister and few of my coworkers said they would get a replacement. I got a replacement and am happier for it.

The screen is amazing. Unless you get an S6 with this screen issue that is as severe as the OPs, you display will look fantasticmost of the time. Like you, I came from a LG G2 and also own a Tab Pro 8.4, which both use LCD panels. Even though my replacement S6 still suffers from this issue a bit, I think it look much better than either of those other devices. This is really apparent on photos and videos. I did a side by side comparison of the newest 1080p Avengers trailer from youtube with the S6 and G2 and the S6 looked much better. I simply love the deep blacks and more vivid colors.

My bad, those aren't dead pixels. Those are likely just pieces of lint or dust cause I took the pic with the S6 on my bed. My replacement unit is set to arrive today, so I'm going to take a side by side pic of both phones on a white screen again to compare the difference. Will post it up when I get it :good:.

Did Tmobile reship free of charge on shipping and whatever, restocking fees, or any other expenses? Or was the exchange completely free?

Well, second time wasn't a charm lol. Received the replacement unit today and it suffered from the same discoloration on the screen, this time in the upper 1/4th to 1/5th of the screen. I didn't even bother to mess around with it, just packed it right back up and went to UPS and sent it back. At this point, the only option I really have is to wait until the replacement phone is received back at the warehouse, then go into my local Tmobile and get a new device from them in person, THEN send this original phone back via UPS to the warehouse... What a pain in the ass. I'm not sure who to be more upset with, the ridiculous hoops you have to jump through with Tmobile, or the faulty screens/calibration from Samsung.
Edit: The only thing I've found that helps with the problem a little is to switch from basic to AMOLED Cinema under the display settings, but the colors look so ridiculous with this setting that I honestly don't know if I can keep it like this. In fact, I don't think changing it to AMOLED mode actually fixes the problem at all, it just distracts my eyes enough with everything else that I don't notice it as much lol.

I had to exchange my device 4 times due to a particle inside the glass screen. I didn't notice about the pink hue until I got to my third device and read this thread. I assume that my first two device I exchanged had the same issue.
I too would rather wait for S6 to be release in-store and hopefully one of the reps can notice the faulty display issue. I'm just getting tired of contacting customer service every time to order a new device and return the old one. My EIP is practically piling up.
I just hope that someday the media would pick up on this problem when the device is officially released.

At this point, I'm just going to return my original S6 as well, have them activate a microSIM in store and throw it in my old Blackberry Z30 until both phones reach the return destination in Texas. After the refunds and everything I'll pick up another S6, in store this time. (I've learned my lesson: I'm never ordering a phone online again. It's gonna be in store or not at all from now on lol).

Both mine and my gf's Note 4 suffered from this issue. While it was annoying it didn't seem to bad enough to warrant return/exhange. I was concerned about it on my S6 as well. The funny thing is when I first turned it on I didn't notice anything until I switched the screen to the basic mode and turned the bightness down. Whites are definitely uneven, with a warm spot. I don't think its severe enough to replace. But it does seem to be almost unavoidable. I didn't notice it on my S4 until I went back and examined it. Otherwise, the screen is beautiful. It doesn't help being OCD.
The first time I experience this was on a Nokia Icon - it was severe. Fortunately none of my other devices were to that degree.

Yea, I hear ya. See my problem is 2 fold: 1) I am pretty ocd when it comes to defects in things, and 2) I've been using TFT LCD screens on multiple phones for awhile now, and this is my first time back on an AMOLED in a long time. Due to that fact, I'm guessing this issue is sticking out a lot more to me than it might others who have been using AMOLED screens for a couple generations now in succession. I can take a few problems with a phone here and there, like a scratch on the metal or whatnot, but when there's a problem with the screen of a device, you can't get away from it. Every time you use the phone, you have to see it :\.
