Verizon Bloat in 5.1 - Nexus 6 General

Looks like Verizon somehow got their backup bloat into the Nexus 6 5.1 image. I am on AT&T and have the backup app with Verizon's logo for it.

That is disgusting to see. Then again, like SprintDM, the phones will have all of this so that all the models with have the same OS and therefore one model for all networks.

You know what, I think Verizon shows up because I have the My Fios app installed, yeah that's why.

My Nexus 6 has this App and I didn't buy it in the US (nor do I use it there).
It's very disappointing to see stuff like that which can't be disabled.
There's also something called "VZWAPN"

YUCK. The worst part is you can't even disable it or uninstall it. OH well it's going right next to SprintDM in titanium backup frozen hell

There's SprintDM and T-Mobile MyAccount too, on mine. Sounds like the risk of having a single update for all carriers is you gotta have the stuff for all carriers in it. I wonder if the factory image will have this stuff.

Yeah, it's really not bad. It's not like the apps are even being used at all. I mean, you can always delete the apks with a file manager if it hurts that much.

The t-mobile one you can uninstall. I don't have that one on my phone. The sprintDM and verizon backup wouldn't be such a big deal if it was just on the phone but the fact that it runs in the background is the annoying part for me. I'll probably end up needing that Verizon one as I plan on swapping my VZ and Tmobile sims from time to time. I hope 5.1 allows me to just swap the sim in instead of factory resetting the phone.

Wow, people. You should really listen to yourselves. When you have a device that works on multiple carriers, there are ALWAYS going to be carrier specific libraries in order to make things work. Yes, there's a VZWAPN APK. Yes, there's a SprintDM APK, there are also US Cellular-specific APKs in there, and there's probably some very T-Mobile and AT&T specific code if you want to dig for it. Christ, people. You have a phone that works on just about every network in the history of the world. Do you think that all happens just like magic without any involvement from any carrier at all?
And for those of you outside the US, clearly Google doesn't want to have to manage two separate ROMs for the Nexus 6 just over a few APKs, so yeah, your ROM is going to have APKs for US based carriers in it too. Somehow, I think you'll survive.
Come on, now. I know y'all are smarter than this.

I think its funny people are calling it bloat. Like its bing maps, skype or the samsung S apps.

We are smarter than that. That's why we freeze it. . It's just one of the things friends ask me is. Why do you like nexus phones and why should I switch? I tell them that nexus phones don't have all that bloatware carrier phones come with. And while it's still free of bloatware for the most part, I hope it's not a trend in the wrong direction. If they can install carrier apps depending on what carrier Sim, why weren't they able to keep these apps carrier specific? It's not THAT big of a deal for now but like I said I hope it doesn't go in the wrong direction.
My theory is that eventually the upcoming Google wireless service will be compatible across all 4 carriers. Imagine never having a coverage issue because you have a phone that works on all 4 concurrently with one service.

Google wallet and AT&T S3

Is there, or will there be a way to use google wallet on the non sprint S3s? With or without root or rom?
There has to be some info on this out there. Is Google Wallet just a gimmick or will this really take off? If so I would think AT$T and Verizon being bigger providers than Sprint, there would have to be the ability to get these to work with it.

there is info on this, if you search.
wallet is only support officially by sprint. the rest of the carriers you will have to find the modded apk for wallet.
(also, i hit the thanks button accidentally instead of 'quote' on your post, so free thanks for you!)
I searched, but anything that comes up is about Sprint having it and AT&T not...But at least I know that it will be possible at some point.
The question is if the At&t version has a secure element. If it doesn't, then there is no chance.

How do we go about finding something like that out? If they are wanting their version of the s3 to work with some other "google wallet" type system, it would seem it would have all the same requirements. I dont see them killing the ability completely, just had the software side removed. But who knows what these guys will do these days.
Att is developing their own system with some other carriers called ISIS. Probably not a chance to get Google wallet working on the att version.

EDIT: That only works on rooted devices, my bad
Having to root it is not a big deal, I just wanted to know it was possible to use it if the need came up. Right now I dont think NFC payments are big enough to consider a must have, but if the day comes that 8 of 10 shops use some sort of nfc payment system it will change my mind for sure. I just like to know that I can do something. Im sorta waiting to root as well Its running like a champ and everything that i use daily is working without a root. Once a nice easy one click is out that will not trip the counter I will go for it, or if some app or ability that I just have to use requires it. But just enjoying the phone for now as is
I am rooted still doesn't work on i747 just hangs on activating
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Maybe now that so many are getting this phone we will see some work being done to figure this out.
to get it to work you will need to fudge the phone into thinking it's connected with Sprint using Market Enabler or equivalent. That's I had to do on my G Nexus in canada.
so, for some reason, i installed it, it loads but i get this message, and just stopps.
"Initializing your device. this make take a few min...... blahh blahh.. "
thats it..
Worked for me on Canadian sgs3...
I'll try post instructions for it tomorrow evening.

Will Google Edition take Touchwiz ROMs?

I'm definitely going to buy the Google Edition of S4.
I know they have the same hardware as the rest of the US Variants but I'm just wondering if Touchwiz STOCK rooted ROMs can be ported to the Google Edition.
I will be using AOSP/CM/AOKP ROM anyway but I just want to know just incase I want to test out TW.
Thanks
of course they can, and the other way around is also true, AOSP roms will be ported to TW versions of the phone
See the thing is. There are more devs who will work to port aosp onto the gs4. I can't say the same for devs working to port touchwiz onto google edition. It seems like everyone here tries to get rid of touchwiz
i haven't checked any roms lately, but if there are any existing TW roms, i'm pretty sure it'll be very easy to port them to the google edition since it's the same phone
No.
It will work but it won't work 100%

Truth. There's no "pretty much" about it in this case. It's the same phone. Shouldn't even require much porting, if any at all. Just look at all the tmo, sprint, and i9505 ROMs we've been flashing - no porting. No different here.

You guys have no clue if it's identical. They could change one tiny thing internally and mess it all up, which I could see them doing
What maybe different is most of the sensors maybe disabled like in the HTC GE version.

4G LTE
I just got a 4S I9505 and can't get LTE only H+.
(AT&T says it's because it's not AT&T branded)
I guess they'll try to add my IMEI to their data base in the next couple of weeks.
I wonder if the Google phones will have the same issue?

Yes, I've changed the APN settings.
Problem is AT&T doesn't recognize the new IMEI.
I put the SIM in a old Inspire (using a adapter).
When I logged into my account I could see my three lines and phones (2 Vivids & the Inspire).
But as soon as the SIM is back in the S 4 my account updates and the Inspire picture is replaced a general picture.
I have even tried to change the phone info on line. I selected Samsung but the i9505 isn't listed.
I'm thinking about using the IMEI from a broken vivid I have, but suspect it would be noticed.

This is one of the things with getting off network devices. Like my carrier only allows their devices to use the LTE network. Any IMEI in the network that is not theirs goes to get on LTE.
Also don't talk about changing your IMEI. It is Illegal.

Missing some Advanced Features from settings...

Is anyone else missing some features from the advance feature menus on the verizon s7 edge? I was looking for the switch for the app drawer removal and the switch for the white pages caller id. Is there any way to sideload with out rooting? I cannot root i use samsung pay everyday.
Verizon has removed the white pages feature.
Any way to enable them like you can with adaptive storage?

FYI - This doesn't actually do anything. It will say you've turned it on, but it doesn't work.
They also removed the auto restart feature.
I finally have 7.0 on my Verizon GS7 Edge. I know Verizon blocks some Samsung features, but I was wondering if anyone has a list of everything that is missing. Unfortunately, this is a work phone, so I can't just switch carriers. I had the Note 7 with T-Mobile, but we all know how that turned out. Rather than carrying 2 S7 Edge phones I decided to cancel my line with T-Mo and just rock the one phone for a while. Now I'm wondering if that was a mistake.

Yes. Unless someone cracks the bootloader. Verizon carries all the government contracts so they will never knowingly allow unlocked phones on their network. Honestly though I doubt you will find a more streamlined experience than stock Android on the Pixel. It was designed to run 7.1. I doubt any ROM will improve on it. The fact that Google is in control of the software as well means you will always be on the latest version.

Right. So I don't see anything about Verizon and not allowing carriers like Verizon to remove apps and features on their phones. They let them install bloatware Verizon apps that can be "deleted" but can they be uninstalled?
This isn't like Apple because Apple doesn't let Verizon "handle" their updates.

I linked an article and said to read #6 but you did not. So here it is on a spoon for you.
Update [10/12/16]:?*Google and Verizon seem to have reached a revised and more firmly defined position on this matter. In a new statement provided this morning, Google now says: "Google controls the distribution of all OS updates and security patches for Pixel devices. OS updates and monthly security patches will be updated on all Pixel devices (Verizon and non-Verizon versions) simultaneously."
Everything I have read has stated the the VZ apps are uninstallable.
It is more like Apple for updates in this case. Google and Verizon both said Google will be pushing the updates.

Everything I have read has stated the the VZ apps are uninstallable.
It is more like Apple for updates in this case. Google and Verizon both said Google will be pushing the updates.

Yeah the Nexus program was just google dabbling. They are going directly after apple with the Pixel. And hopefully other Android OEM's. Fragmentation has always been a problem and Google is finally starting to do something about it. iOS has always had the upper hand this way by controlled releases and software/hardware being designed together. That's exactly what the Pixel was made to compete with.

Qualcomm backdoor found

So recently there was an article on XDA about finding a Qualcomm app preinstalled that could be used as a backdoor granting root without unlocking the bootloader. It doesn't clarify whether such an app would work on all Qualcomm chipsets (835) since it's shared by various devices. Thoughts?

It was found on a one plus, but if it's a Qualcomm app it's should work on Android in general
Well, you would need the same Qualcomm app software to switch it on, and have to use fastboot to push it to the device. If your goal is to achieve root, you can just push a modified boot image, which is the best way to do it now, to the device. So it would be the same amount of work at best.
I'm definitely not an expert, though...

That app has to be installed as system. It's useless outside of Oneplus being dumb and leaving it in their image.

True, but those with VZW pixels whose bootloader can't be unlocked...it seemed plausible. It makes sense though that'd it'd have to be installed as a system app though. But the possibility of root without unlocking.. It came across like finding a 4 leaf clover

Easier solution, have Verizon replace your device due to burn-in. I did that on Saturday and got my replacement yesterday. Guess what? They sent me a Google Store unlocked device as my replacement.

Not all of us can afford or want to spend $1000 flatout on a device. I'm on the edge program and just upgrade every 2 years.

Curious is this just coincidence or is this what they are actually expected/told to do?

Yes, but I still require a service provider and Verizon is the best in my area. I'll look into it when I graduate my next device though.

I don't think either. I think what's happening is due to Google increasing the warranty by a year and by the announcement of burn-in being possible Google might just be directly handling all the surplus on replacement devices personally.

I have Verizon and I got the Google store version with financing. You can still use your current service provider, or even bring-your-device to whatever carrier FYI.

I'm well aware I can buy the Google Store version. I was pointing out that since I still need a service provider and already have Verizon and am already enrolled into their Edge Program I grabbed the phone through them.

Not just system. PRIVILEGED system, and signed with the vendor key. You can't just copy it on, even if you already have root access to the device, because the platform will reject it unless its been signed by the same private key as the platform.
