What's Best Ad blocking Software for GS5? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys! I would like to know which ad blocking software do you use in your S5.
I've been using AdAway in my G900F, but it doesn't work 100% properly.
Soo tell me! Which one are you using? Does it work? Which could you say is the best app for blocking ads on the S5?
Does it completly erradicates all ads? Does it leaves the non-intrusive ones?
Root required - non root requiered, anything! :fingers-crossed:

I'm using AdAway and it's working perfect. Have you tried Adfree? That works good too

That's weird... for me it doesn't block all ads, for example in apps I usually get that white ad rectangle in the lower part of the screen.
Hey does someone knows a way to remove ads from videos in youtube? Because AdAway doesn't block those does it? (the ones that shows before the video starts), I've heard of some, but they all need xposed....

I've used many apps and they don't work. Don't know why.

Minminguard has been pretty awesome for me, gets rid of all ads. Have to be rooted and use the exposed app to download it.

toally agreed. I'm using also AdAway. In Firefox, i'm using adblock-edge also.

I myself use AdAway and it works quite good.
And if you use Xposed, you can use the "YouTube Adaway" module so you dont get any ads on YouTube .
Another advice: If you use this module, you can also use the "YouTube Background Playback" module from xposed too, so you can play music even when you leave the YouTube app.

always use HOSTS file method
theres forum called Motherofalladblocking
see it

I wish I could still use ad blocking but I started to notice on a few web sites I frequent, the back button would not go back to the previous page and the current page would just reload. I noticed this on my GS3 and the One. Took me a while to figure out it was ad blocking that was interfering with the proper loading and back function of these web sites for some reason. I don't have any such problems on my desktop PC, presumably because the ad blocking usually works differently on a PC. On mobile phones, it's usually just a freaking huge host file that black holes known ad urls to 127.0.0.1 or equivalent.

Might wanna try adblock plus, it works differently I guess, I indeed noticed some websites not working properly when using adfree or adaway or through the host file .. weird thing is I don't remember that on my jailbroken IPhone or GS3/Galaxy Nexus ..

You probably don't remember it because it only happens on some sites. Just so happens some sites I frequented had the back button problem, I don't remember the specific ones. Maybe huffpo.com or something like that.
I will try Adblock Plus, thanks for the suggestion. I use it with Firefox on my PC and I love it.
Adaway. Installs as an .apk, and works in the background. Even updates in the background.
Ad-Block plus requires that an icon be in the Notification area, which I don't like.

It can be hidden, and in apps menu notifications can be disabled, this used to be an issue in the early builds.
Adfree android works well, plus it's the only one to work on android 4.3. As for the back button, I always found pressing the back button twice worked for me.

Interesting, I had no idea the back button problem was caused by my ad blocker. I just thought the websites have really stupid developers. I wonder if they do this on purpose to punish users of ad blockers...
Still worth it to me. I haven't seen an online ad in years, besides the odd one that slips through

Tried all three (Adfree, Adaway and Mother of all Adblock). Found Adfree gives best zapping of ads, has the largest hostfile size (more ad & tracker sites blocked) and has the most personalised white/blacklist. Why am I on the HTC 1 thread? Researching to shift from the XZ to the HTC1 dual-sim or the Butterfly S.

AdAway, for the web.
If I really like a app I buy the donate/pro version so I can support development.
Using a host file with rom but I also have that website problem on websites like Engadget. But I just press back multiple times... the real issue is that I can't access websites through the slick deals app because clicking them just takes to a 404.
Not sure if there's a fix for this but I'm thinking of getting rid of the adblock

Adaway since first day and working like a charm
Been using Adblock plus and are very happy with it. Have some problems in a few News apps, but I'll guess it's ok.
Aren't apps like adaway etc blocked from the play store? How are you finding the apps?
Yes, these apps were available @ Play Store but Google removed them.
You can search for them on the net, download the apk file and then install it on your device.

Workaround for the page reloading issue when hitting back button is to enable webserver and set it on boot.

Temporary Root??

So, I know we are still a long way off from a real root solution, given the locked bootloader issue. However, would there be some way to get root at least until a reboot. I've got a couple of apps that I can't live without, and as I am about to get my S7 Edge, I am getting concerned.
Top of the list:
1. Titanium
2. Ad blocker
Use AdGuard, NetGuard or Block-This for ad blocking, works just as good. going without TiBu sucks though.

Not sure if it was a bad install, but I tried Block-This last night and it worked great, until I restarted my phone. I couldn't swipe left or right on home screen, and couldn't access app drawer. I had to uninstall it by pulling down from top and going into settings then app management. As soon as I uninstalled all was working again.

It's a virtual VPN. Your data doesn't go through anyour outside servers. It just let's you use a HOSTS file without root. Personally I use NetGuard. I had issues with Block this.

Removal of Ads

Hi Guys
I got my XZ Premium and I wanted to get it rooted just to get the app I used that remove ads (which requires root)
Ive seen that there is no way to currently root it and wanted to know if there is another way I can get rid of ads
The phone has been rootable since day 1 and just use adaway.
If you dont want to root you can use any of the free alternative nonroot adblockers that block ads via vpn routing.
If you are referring to ads on websites, just switch to Firefox Focus for browsing. It has ad blocker builtin.
I have been using AdGuard Premium for years. It blocks inapp ads and https in Chrome. Haven't seen any ads for ages (it works with root + nonroot - with nonroot you will have to enable PIN lock to make https filtering working). You get 1 Android + 1 PC lifetime license for about 7 euros

And AdGuard is hidden for the websites. Other websites "see" Adblockers and don't let you see the content.
So, AdGuard is definitly the best for unrootet phones.

So how do we do Adblocking now that Adhell and SABS are dead?

Hi,
sorry if this was asked before - but now Adhell is dead, SABS is DMCA'd - what can we do for Adblocking now, despite using the Samsung browser with Plugins?
Any other way without root/hosts file? Thanks.

Or you could run pihole on raspberry for network wide adblocking rather than individual devices. Plus you can run openvpn so you can browse safely through your home network when off site.

The thing that frustrates me with Disconnect Pro is that there's no custom list functionality. Otherwise it would be probably the best available.
+1 for Raspberry Pi and the use OpenVPN to tunnel DNS whilst not at home.
Here is the apk for SABS for those that want to set it up
Blokada (www.blokada.org) works really well.
It is free and open source and works across all apps (not only the browser)!
It doesn't require root, supports both wifi and mobile networks, and is perfectly safe and simple to use.
You can make exceptions for certain apps and hosts and it is using Black- and Whitelists.
Just make sure the app gets not killed by battery optimization and things like that (there is a setting to ensure it keeps running - showing a VPN symbol in the status bar).
Best regards
Amber
