So how do we do Adblocking now that Adhell and SABS are dead? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hi,
sorry if this was asked before - but now Adhell is dead, SABS is DMCA'd - what can we do for Adblocking now, despite using the Samsung browser with Plugins?
Any other way without root/hosts file? Thanks.

SABS still works fine even though it won't be getting updated anymore. I'm currently still using it.

Okay yeah, but didn't see any download links since the thread was edited. I'll try to find it somewhere else

Or you could run pihole on raspberry for network wide adblocking rather than individual devices. Plus you can run openvpn so you can browse safely through your home network when off site.

Yeah wait for the next Knox renewal. You can't build new Adhell packages anymore. Of course you could use your old apk and edit it yourself I guess.

The thing that frustrates me with Disconnect Pro is that there's no custom list functionality. Otherwise it would be probably the best available.
+1 for Raspberry Pi and the use OpenVPN to tunnel DNS whilst not at home.

Here is the apk for SABS for those that want to set it up

Blokada (www.blokada.org) works really well.
It is free and open source and works across all apps (not only the browser)!
It doesn't require root, supports both wifi and mobile networks, and is perfectly safe and simple to use.
You can make exceptions for certain apps and hosts and it is using Black- and Whitelists.
Just make sure the app gets not killed by battery optimization and things like that (there is a setting to ensure it keeps running - showing a VPN symbol in the status bar).
Best regards
Amber

kinda like what I said about VPN Hosts..... which is free ... you provide the hosts file and you flip a virtual switch to turn in on or off anytime.. puts the virtual private network icon up in the top bar so you know its on ... and its free too ... I like simple and it is...

There you go. there is a new one. its called NotSABS. Its basically the same as SABS but uts been update it from a different dev. Ive been using it for weeks now without having a problem. :good:

Control Your Note 10.1 From Your PC - Including Using S Note

This is pretty cool. You can mirror your Note on your PC and control it using your PC's keyboard and mouse. It's a great way of editing and reviewing S Notes on your PC while they are still in native form on the Note. It connects either over USB (with debugging turned on) or over Wi-Fi.
Here's the desktop app...
http://www.mobizen.com/en/?page_id=236
Here's the Play store app for the Note...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5yc3VwcG9ydC5tdmFnZW50Il0.
I can confirm this works well with the Note 10.1, thanks for the heads-up. :good:
Edit: You have to download the APK from their website as the market version reports it is incompatible with the Note. The downloaded version has the correct skin for the note.
Great app but it`s not showing the proper skin for me (downloaded and installed the apk from their site version 1.0.1.26).
Anyone wanna post the apk file, play store says it's incompatible with ALL my toys and can't find the apk file on the mobizen site.....
Doesn't help I just finished work and have to start again in 7 1/2 hours....

The desktop app reads the device's model number when it connects. I have a N8000 and it worked fine. It also worked for my N7100. I don't know about the N8010/13 or non-international versions of Samsung's devices. The company that built the app is in Germany and probably doesn't know the N8013 even exists (as well as Samsung phones with carrier specific model numbers).
Well it`s woking fine with my note2 (n7100) too and showing with the proper skin. I have the n8000 but for some reason it`s not showing the proper skin. Anyway as long as it`s working ..... Thx for the great recommendation!

This is a great tool, thank you very much for sharing! I have it installed and it is working very well.
This is exactly what I was looking for, something that allows me to easily connect to my Note and utilize S notes (or whatever) with my computer keyboard.
I have plenty of work documentation that I can now easily copy and paste into S notes, and this saves me a lot of time retyping everything. :good:

Reading the user reviews in Google Play, a lot state that they took away WIFI. Can someone confirm that? I'd really love this if it could be used over WIFI.
Maybe downloading the apk from the link provided early instead of downloading it from Google Play will still have WIFI available??
Can you tell me how you copy paste into the tab using this tool.. I want to copy text from PC and paste into tab using mobizen screen.

After you install it on the device and start it, it asks you if you want to download the wireless module (APK) to use it over Wi-Fi. Still works for me. Once it's set up, all you need to do is start the desktop app and it automatically finds and starts the app on the device if its connected to Wi-Fi.

hi all,
does there exists a security software, that protects also the other browsers- like firefox, opera etc?
Most of the solutions only support one - mostly the standard browser..

There is no such thing as stupid question. There could be only stupid answer.
If you don't know how to help or don't want to share your knowledge then don't be offensive at least.
no you don't necessarily NEED antivirus, however you could use a firewall if your so inclined. Alot of the malicious software will want to download onto your phone or send your information to a server over the net. If your meticulous with a firewall you can get a pretty good balance of safety plus access.. I ran one for a while but on an older phone it was a bit slow. You have actually reminded me i may try one out again..
as for antivirus specifically if you want to you can use one, lookout seems to be very good for not slowing yoru phone down to much, antivrus ability and also the ability to have extra features such as phone wipe etc (however android manager can do this for you)
In my opinion antivirus softwares will only slow your device, really you don't need any.
Tkanks a lot for your answers.

Yes, it seem to me, that a firewall is more important!
Is ist better to take a firewall with root? If yes - why?
Which firewalls are you using?
I found some:
Root: FWall+ (Android Firewall +), Android Firewall - Donate
Without Root: Firewall ohne Root (grey shirts)

There is no need for firewall either if you're not dealing with NSA sensetive stuff. All though firewall wouldn't help much. I don't think there are firewalls at all for android, or what..?
The only issue can be malware wich comes with shady apps. Can be removed with "dr. Web" app
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
Hehehe, of course not NSA stuff, but I do most of my banking on my phone, I sometimes purchase stuff using my credit cards too, so I'd like to be as secured as possible. that's about it
Which firewall are you using?
I used droid wall fairly simple interface and I believe it required root..
However a firewall nor really a antivirus will protect you buying from sites online. Of you chose to use a credit card rather than a payment service like PayPal you are only as safe as their webpage and encryption of the specific site with your data
As for banking does your bank have a specific app that will get you away from just the browser webpage?
Also read permissions of the apps you install on your phone of some seem dodge don't install it or revoke certain permissions to stop unnecessary ones I do the latter often as a game does not need to look at your sms nor phone calls so they can be blocked
I use the free version of Eset for antivirus
I use the built in hidden App Ops(activity of built in settings app) for a firewall/permissions management tool

Temporary Root??

So, I know we are still a long way off from a real root solution, given the locked bootloader issue. However, would there be some way to get root at least until a reboot. I've got a couple of apps that I can't live without, and as I am about to get my S7 Edge, I am getting concerned.
Top of the list:
1. Titanium
2. Ad blocker
Use AdGuard, NetGuard or Block-This for ad blocking, works just as good. going without TiBu sucks though.

Not sure if it was a bad install, but I tried Block-This last night and it worked great, until I restarted my phone. I couldn't swipe left or right on home screen, and couldn't access app drawer. I had to uninstall it by pulling down from top and going into settings then app management. As soon as I uninstalled all was working again.

It's a virtual VPN. Your data doesn't go through anyour outside servers. It just let's you use a HOSTS file without root. Personally I use NetGuard. I had issues with Block this.

No good. Those values don't show up in shortcut master.
Anyone had any luck with this? I can't find the file that OMJ is talking about to save my life. I don't see any attachments.
I've tried editing my build.prop and I've tried editing the default xml to change the rules and enforcement to 0.
The latter DID let the hotspot start for me. Other devices can connect. But they never get network connectivity.
Can anyone help me confirm what I'm missing?
Fabio Grasso's WiFi Tether app works for me on the 10.

I can't get it to work on mine! I've achieved root, installed the app, matched all the settings up....no internet connection. It's strange, my Ipad can see the network and it says it's connected. As soon as I connect it though I lose internet connection on both devices, can't load a single web page. Did you have this issue at all or would you have any idea what would cause this? I'm at my wits end with it, and I've used this app for 2 years on my M8.

HAH. I couldn't get it to work with this app (not initially anyway). I turned to his site to check if there were settings already available to use for the HTC 10 because it couldn't auto-detect the wifi adapter name. On his site, it says HTC users need to uninstall "TetherGuard" - system app.
Did that, figured I'd reboot and try the built in tethering which now works beautifully. Got it still within my refund window for Wifi Tether Router.
So some combination of what I posted above plus UNINSTALL TETHERGUARD! And life's good now. Thanks much.

You can use Titanium Backup to uninstall TetherGuard since you're rooted, instead of just disabling it.
Anyone want to post the specific changes/tweaks they've done? I've done changes to build.prop and default.xml (using the various settings found all over XDA) and also disabled/removed TetherGuard, but I'm still stuck at hotspot enabling but no data connection for any connected devices (data still works for the phone while hotspot is on though).

You can install and use it without root, but if you want internet you'll need to use wifi instead of bluetooth. Or, like you said, install it as system app to use bluetooth. Which currently is hard to do since Google changed the filesystem on android watches. In other words, you cannot modify system files from from the watch itself, you need to unpack/repack filesystem image on pc to edit system partition.
However, the screen is way, way too small for comfortable browsing. It is, the only free way to login on the wifi network that requires you to click some button on the gateway website.
Take a look here at my old thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/android-wear/general/guide-connect-to-public-wifi-hospots-t3123995
Note that you cannot permanently change system DPI due to the issue I described above.
