What is the adblocking method you're using ? - One (M7) General

A quick poll to see what users of one prefer using ..

I wish I could still use ad blocking but I started to notice on a few web sites I frequent, the back button would not go back to the previous page and the current page would just reload. I noticed this on my GS3 and the One. Took me a while to figure out it was ad blocking that was interfering with the proper loading and back function of these web sites for some reason. I don't have any such problems on my desktop PC, presumably because the ad blocking usually works differently on a PC. On mobile phones, it's usually just a freaking huge host file that black holes known ad urls to 127.0.0.1 or equivalent.

Might wanna try adblock plus, it works differently I guess, I indeed noticed some websites not working properly when using adfree or adaway or through the host file .. weird thing is I don't remember that on my jailbroken IPhone or GS3/Galaxy Nexus ..

You probably don't remember it because it only happens on some sites. Just so happens some sites I frequented had the back button problem, I don't remember the specific ones. Maybe huffpo.com or something like that.
I will try Adblock Plus, thanks for the suggestion. I use it with Firefox on my PC and I love it.

Adaway. Installs as an .apk, and works in the background. Even updates in the background.
Ad-Block plus requires that an icon be in the Notification area, which I don't like.

It can be hidden, and in apps menu notifications can be disabled, this used to be an issue in the early builds.

Adfree android works well, plus it's the only one to work on android 4.3. As for the back button, I always found pressing the back button twice worked for me.

Interesting, I had no idea the back button problem was caused by my ad blocker. I just thought the websites have really stupid developers. I wonder if they do this on purpose to punish users of ad blockers...
Still worth it to me. I haven't seen an online ad in years, besides the odd one that slips through

Tried all three (Adfree, Adaway and Mother of all Adblock). Found Adfree gives best zapping of ads, has the largest hostfile size (more ad & tracker sites blocked) and has the most personalised white/blacklist. Why am I on the HTC 1 thread? Researching to shift from the XZ to the HTC1 dual-sim or the Butterfly S.
Dead Cookies leave mo trails...

AdAway, for the web.
If I really like a app I buy the donate/pro version so I can support development.

Using a host file with rom but I also have that website problem on websites like Engadget. But I just press back multiple times... the real issue is that I can't access websites through the slick deals app because clicking them just takes to a 404.
Not sure if there's a fix for this but I'm thinking of getting rid of the adblock

Adaway since first day and working like a charm

Been using Adblock plus and are very happy with it. Have some problems in a few News apps, but I'll guess it's ok.

Aren't apps like adaway etc blocked from the play store? How are you finding the apps?

Yes, these apps were available @ Play Store but Google removed them.
You can search for them on the net, download the apk file and then install it on your device.

Have been using Adaway for a couple of weeks ....Seemless :fingers-crossed:

Workaround for the page reloading issue when hitting back button is to enable webserver and set it on boot.

Some roms like android revolution use the host file from them. The option is there when you are flashing in recovery.

Odd Facebook Issue

So I was able to get DL17 working last night. Now I'm having an odd issue with FB. I'm attempting to update the factory FB, which is apparently around version 1.2. I attempted to update to the latest version (1.6.1) and it keeps crashing while loading. Everything downloads fine and says it successfully installs, but it keeps crashing.
What am I doing wrong?

I have Friendcaster on my droid... I'm not completely sold on it, either. Although, the paid version might be better than the free one.
I was able to send her the apk for 1.6.0 (the latest is 1.6.1) and THAT apparently updated just fine. If she has any issues updating from now on, I may point her to Friendcaster.

I did that on my old Blackberry, as the FB app for it bit. But, I like the options some of the apps vs. the mobile site. The problem I'm finding between the 3 is inconsistencies of what you can do. I know I used one to tag friends. I know the regular FB app, you can't add check-in places (you can with mobile site or Friendcaster). Seems odd that the 3 would be different.

I thought you were supposed to be able to, but I never saw the + to add one. It really wasn't a HUGE issue, but I was trying to add one for my house and my in-laws house. Had to use Friendcaster to do that.
Just start typing the name of the place you want to add and when Facebook can't find it, it will say "add [check in place]"

first step would be using the search function on these forums...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28734102&postcount=5 download the apk here...
then just use any browser other than chrome.
alternatively, if you're using youtube website, just go to www.youtube.com/html5 and enable html5. that will allow your device to use html5 for any webpages that use embedded youtube videos.
Thank you very much guy. I don't know why didn't think about a different browser. Again thank you

I am running FireFox (google Mozilla APK) and Flash APK and using a FireFox addon called 'Full Screen'. It gets rid of the URL part so u can zoom in and get as close to 'full screen'; if u try to use the regular full screen, most of the time the browsers crash.
At first I thought 'Full Screen' sucked b/c of the ratings but its not as bad, actually its pretty good b/c it seems to work perfect for tablet (seems like phones its not so good since smaller screen). Just make sure u know that u have to turn it on thru the menu (no quick hotkey/gesture) and to turn it off to get back URL bar, u hold down on a page till popup comes on asking to turn it off or not. Overall its pretty good on the Nexus 7, only wish is to have a quick gesture/hotkey to turn it on.

[Q] It seems my Samsung tablet was hit by some kind of malware, how to check?

The symptom is, each time I switch on my tablet, I receive a notification in lower right corner promoting something like lucky draw, game, etc. If I click on the notification, it automatically starts downloading apk. The apk is always named like yyyymmddxxxxxxxxxxx.apk. I never run those apks, I guess they are not friendly. How can I check which app I installed is doing this?

First check what you have installed recently. Could be one of those apps give spam notifications. I saw something similar on my bro-in-law phone and that was because he installed some kind of "enhancement" program to make his phone run more efficient (it didn't help bytheway).
Also, since you didn't say what OS you're running, 4.0+ has the option to disable notifications when you go to settings>applications>app name. If you find its an app you need, then that might help.
If you thinks its beyond this, then install lookout or norton from the market.
It's not malware, they're called push notification ads. Just download "Ad Blocker" (root required) from the market and it will tell you which app(s) is doing this. You can also choose to delete it from within the app.
Pretty handy.

I don't have it now, I will load it when I get it next time.
However I have the list of apps I installed because I sent it to the author of push detector. How can I send it to you? I just don't want to post it here.
I have another finding, which seems odd to me: I set the home page of chrome to be blank, and I double checked that, but each time I open the browser it always opens a search page with a lot of informations (looks like a portal but I don't like it). How can I know which app replaces my home page with such rubish?
Is it possible the 3G provider does this kind of things? (notification ads and home replacement)?

No, your network provider would have nothing to do with push notification ads or homepage replacement. And as for setting your homepage in Google chrome, are you talking about the desktop version? Because I don't believe you can make that selection on the mobile version, unless I'm missing something?
BTW, you can send that list to me in a PM if you'd like.

Try this app, it will tell you every app that has a shady ad network and you can delete it. A friend of mine had an app that was creating a ton of shortcuts all over her home screens.

Boat browser is my favorite, better than dolphin IMO, chrome sucks on android.
The stock browser not supporting a permanent desktop-mode is enough to make me look for a replacement though, this is a HUGE letdown for me. Not only that, but the removal of flash content makes the stock browser almost useless to me other than the text preview function.
However, It seems the stock browser is the only one that supports text preview without opening a link (mostly useful for various forums) in addition to smart scroll.
Which would be the best browser that supports flash while not being laggy/bloated with features and also having a permanent desktop mode?
I've found the latest chrome update to be really slow. In comparison, the stock browser loads the same page/pages in double quick time. Am I the only one or is it a general problem across the board?

I also found Chrome to be too sluggish. The browsers with the highest ratings at least based on reviews were Dolphin & Boat. A lot of the reviews on Boat said it was very snappy, very fast and that imo is probably the biggest factor with Flash support and a permanent desktop mode right behind.
been using chrome, but slowly trying to convert myself to the default browser so i can actually use all the gestures that i paid to have on the damn phone
I personally love dolphin with the jetpack installed. Normal browsing, jetpack turned off. When watching flash, jetpack turned on. With that turned on, flash works like dream on this phone. Can watch full episodes of Colbert no problem =)

Here is the apk for SABS for those that want to set it up
Blokada (www.blokada.org) works really well.
It is free and open source and works across all apps (not only the browser)!
It doesn't require root, supports both wifi and mobile networks, and is perfectly safe and simple to use.
You can make exceptions for certain apps and hosts and it is using Black- and Whitelists.
Just make sure the app gets not killed by battery optimization and things like that (there is a setting to ensure it keeps running - showing a VPN symbol in the status bar).
Best regards
Amber
