Verizon did not dump The Nexus One, Google getting out of the Phone Sales Business

Does not look like any more phones are going to come directly from Google, however, I am still VERY happy with my Nexus One!!

Ill reserve my judegement for an official announcement, I dont see anything that indicates google is done with phones.

They are definitely not done with phones. They will continue to develop the software, and might just pull out of the "hardware" business and leave that to HTC.

well the only thing confirmed in the article is that Verizon did not cancel the phone. Google did.
Rest is pure speculation of the blogger. If Google wanted to quit completely... why did they launch the at&t version?
Phones for verizon and Sprint (CDMA etc) are not as straight forward as for T-Mobile and At&T (GSM). The phones have to be locked to verizon and sprint.. they are always at the mercy of the provider. GSM are standard based and all you need is SIM card to move from one service to other. You are not tied to a carrier.
Anyways... I will avoid speculating further myself...There are just way too many things going on in the corporate world.
Just be assured... Google has shares in the market... they will have to release a press release and give good reason to cancel phone business as the phone business was in black. They can't cancel any profitable business without explaining it to investors.

The nexus one is profitable to google? At&t version shouldn't be too hard since it's gsm like T-Mobile. Maybe they just decided they don't want to make a cdma phone since gsm is the standard around the world anyway.

What google wants to do can't be done with the two biggest cell phone companies because it's a closed ecosystem.

Not one sentence of that is from a public/official source. Google on the other hand has said publicly that they are making money, they are happy with what they were getting out of it, they plan to stay in it for the long haul. Hmmmm.

I actually like that the nexus has poor sales.... Its a great phone than no one bought (mostly due to zero marketing and lack of tech support) so it gives it a sense of exclusivity. Usually to get such exclusivity you have to buy a crappy phone or a really overpriced one. and google is not hurting financially... this was more of a science project for them
Its quite different from when I had my iphone... I remember I would be out on a dinner and when the “apple ringtone” went off, 10 people would bust out their iphones, no people contantly ask me what phone i have

Google should have put a Beta tag on google.com/phone.
Then no one would have complained about the low sales and it would be clear that this is just them getting their feet wet.
Put it this way: the next phone Google sells on their website, you can be guaranteed that sales (and off-line advertising) will be much higher.

I went to google.com/phone and I didn't see anything about this on there. Is this news offical? I'm 24 more days away from ordering my Nexus One and I was hoping to have it delivered to my house and such. Damn, I wanted to get my phone engraved too.

I still don't see a timetable in either of those two links. It might be better if I went over to t-mobile store and picked one up.. that way I could see if "dust is under the screen" or some sorta damage on it... idk..
Looks as though they will still sell it online and in stores and eventually they will do away with online all together.

Yep they just "announced" it. No specific date on when they'r pulling the plug on the online store.

I said before launch...I hope its a phone that everyone wants but few have.
Few have it..it IS unique...but noone knows wth it is and just assume its some stupid iphone.
Only cel store folks have had any clue of what it is.

Im assuming you wear fruit of the loom shirts , lee jeans , walmart sneakers ,no belt , a blank cap , drive a GM vehicle , and use plain black stock headphones.
Some people like to things because they are unique. Some people dont enjoy looking or using the same exact thing or way that everyone else does.

Google will stop selling it online, and instead will let the carriers sell the phone instead.
Reason? Google says it's because customers want a hands-on experience before buying the phone itself.
The online store was for early adopters+niche market.
Just to clarify things up: The Nexus One is not dead, it just won't be available online, only through carriers as stated by the employee:
More retail availability. As we make Nexus One available in more countries we’ll follow the same model we’ve adopted in Europe, where we're working with partners to offer Nexus One to consumers through existing retail channels. We’ll shift to a similar model globally.

It's different news tho. That one was an article on why Verizon probably didn't carry the Nexus One. This is google officially coming out to say they will stop selling it.
If it really is repetitive, then feel free to lock. 0.o

Does this mean we can finally get subsidized N1s? If so I'm going to sale my N1 while they are still worth something. Then use money to get subsidized one.

The ONLY thing Google has conceded, in no longer exclusively selling the N1 via website, is that people don't want to buy something site-unseen.
Nexus One lives on, but now will be more readily available for people to "kick the tires" before buying.

You can already with t-mobile.
They are probably gonna be available with more plans now though.

Interesting... I wonder how Google is going to get retail stores to showcase the N1? By Google paying the Retailers a portion of the profits for each one sold but maintaining control or by giving the retailers total control over the phone and the retailers paying Google for each N1 sold?

IDK, if you were me... would you feel better picking a N1 up in the store or ordering from the online store. I'm liking the online store better for some reason..

So now since my 2 year contract is up on both of my lines, will i be able to get it subsidized through tmobile dirt cheap?

BTW this may mark the first time in history a celphone store worker was right. Had one insisting the Nexus One would be avilable in Tmo stores by June.....of course that was followed by "we're also getting the iphone"...so....

Well 180 is better then 570, which is what i paid for my current n1. Although i just might wait and see what else they come out with.

I think this is good news. Im predicting nexus sales will jump up 80%.

The Nexus One was GREAT!!!! The store was not.
If it wasn't for the N1, phones like the Incredible or the Evo would most likely have come out much, much later than they did/will. It certainly raised the bar for "high-end" Android phones, and smartphones in general.
I'm also sad about this, because as attn1 mentioned, what's going to happen when carriers like AT&T don't want to carry a particular phone in the future?? Buying a phone through Google for AT&T was like a big "Hey AT&T, here's a /middle finger for you!"
AND not only does it allow phone manufacturers to make and sell a device without worrying about the carrier blocking it, but it allows for selling it worldwide without even taking into account WHICH carrier it's designed for. Grab the phone, use it in Canada, India, Europe, etc.
How many people on this forum would never have an N1 had it not been for the Google store?
Last but certainly not least, it also leaves the phone bloat-ware free! Can you imagine the Nexus Two with AT&T crapware and not being able to install non-market apps like the Backflop??

I probably wouldnt have the N1 if it wasnt unlocked and available through Google. I was only a few months into contract.

I'm on a family plan so I could never get the N1 for anything less than 529.00; I had to wait till some crazy chick on craigs list sold it to me for 400 because she just wanted an Iphone, lol

Why I hate Verizon even more now

Have you read what they're doing lately? To me, this is such a disrespectful move towards Google and the Android OS. Yeah, Android is open source, but you shouldn't let the carriers abuse and diminish Google and the Android name.
I will NEVER join Verizon. Google needs to make a stand for their OS, for their revenue stream, for their stance in the mobile world.
And they need to make a ****ing Nexus Two and sell it better, market it better, offer it for cheaper and sell it online. I believe that they could revive their online phone store if they had the right marketing people to do it. They need to come out with a device that does MORE than everything currently available. They need to put the "making of phones" politics down, put everything in a device that will do everything. I hate it when manufacturers only put current specs, or a little over current specs just to put out a device four months later with a couple upgrades.
Google needs to stay true to its OS, and to its phone line. I would buy every Nexus phone here on out because it has simply been the best phone i have ever owned out of like 20.

Google won't be mass-producing phones, and there is no "Google phone line". They offer developer phones for developers, they don't produce the phones - they outsource the production to actual phone manufacturers, they did that ever since Android, and that's what they'll do. They won't market their phones, they won't sell their phones, because they don't want to. Go search "Open Handset Alliance", read, and use some brain to understand, why it's not going to happen. Not hard, really.
Google can respond easily, and it already did. Google search in on the Market, anyone can install it. And it just needs to make easily installable VoIP app.

Tried posting a link but don't have access yet. Besides the default search they are bringing the VCast app to android in hopes to compete with the market.

I just moved from ATT to T-Mobile. Got one of those MyTouch 3G Slides for my mom and the bloatware on it wasn't as bad as what I saw from ATT and Verizon.
Now I read a thing on En or Giz, can't remember which, about Verizon also making its own Android App store and Google are fine with that because they say they want Android everywhere. That's their current goal. In my opinion, it's a double edged sword. On one hand, I think Google should work on a wall for its "garden." But, on the other, it'll no longer be a completely open environment.

I like the phones that HTC makes. I like the phones that Google calls their Developer models (G1 & N1). So, I bought both those phones.
As mentioned by lbcoder, it's YOUR MONEY.
Don't support Verizon.

The only US carrier to respect Android at all has been T-Mobile, who have added some network apps to their phones, but they are removable (i think) and don't change the actual phone experience. Other than that they've supported vanilla Android and Google search- I will stick with them for Android. AT&T and Verizon would not be able to ruin the iPhone like this because of Apple, Google need to step in and stop this disgrace to the market.

What you all should do, its stop buying subsidized of the carrier, even off the carrier at all. Buy off internet, third party or the like. The only way too hurt carriers and show them your not happy its to hurt their wallets
Why whinge about it then go down to carrier and buy a phone? They will keep doing it if people keep buying phones

Only one problem with that theory!!! 90% of people buying cell phones dont want to spend 400 or more on a phone..( they want that free or spend as less as possible ) lol But I totally agree with you.. Cause I buy phones off craigslist half the time..

How does that make sense if you then end up paying for the same data and voice plan? By not buying the carrier phone you are essentially GIVING the carrier $400+ for free!
They offer your $400 as a subsidy for a phone if you use their service ... if you don't take the subsidy but use their service, you only shoot yourself in the foot.

Like I pointed out in the forum you referenced, a lot of T-Mobile plans are $10 or $20 more a month if you sign up for a 2 year contract. That means subsidized phones on contract cost an additional $240 to $480 more than just the original outlay... Do the math, and see what works for you...
My wife's phone was subsidized by $270 by T-Mo, so I signed up for the contract to get the $270 saving, then paid the $200 early termination fee (saving $70).

I have N1 on TMobile. My wife has Droid on Verizon. I love my phone, and I like the fact I don't have any bloat-ware, but the Verizon network is way better. Her phone never drops from 3G (not to mention faster in many cases, her phone can pull up web pages faster than mine in most cases even though my phone is faster) and never drops a call. Verizon has to pay for their infrastructure somehow and trying to lock in unsuspecting customers who don't know they have search choices or other choices and use whatever in the default services provided is one of those ways...

I'm not exactly sure how your plans work in America, I'm Australian. They make their money off us here by charging slightly higher call rates on subsidized phones
But to think that a company whose aim is to make money, will give you a $500 phone absolutely free to you, and a cost to them. Thinking that way doesn't make sense

I've been with T-Mo for a year now and with the exception of the iPhone 6 pre-orders have been arriving either the day of launch or a day early on every major device since I joined up. Nexus demand isn't going to be anywhere near iPhone demand, so I am guessing that it will be the same here.

If they do then I'll be walking in and out with a 64gb white.

Some questions:
Will the T-Mobile version will be locked down to T-Mobile only? Meaning the resale value is going to tank?
Will it have any T-Mobile branding on the front and/or back?
Will the T-Mobile version be the only one capable of Wi-Fi calling AKA Wi-Fi Unleashed?
Can it be bought outright, or does it require a contract? I currently have the T-Mobile/Walmart $30 plan, and I'd like to stay on that if possible.

T-Mobile will be unlocked. The issue will be having the CDMA carriers adding the IMEI to their system. Using on At&t will not be a problem.
No T-Mobile branding
No idea on that one
If trying to buy our right make sure you go to a Corporate store. Retailers will most likely deny the sale of it without service. They will most likely tell you they don't have any.

Anyone know what time the online orders for the 64 will go live?

WiFi calling is actually a Lolipop feature, so theoretically all carrier versions will support it. That doesn't mean they will actually work when you try to use it, though - since VZT and ATT have not rolled it out yet it's doubtful that it will.
Worst case, you can route your calls through Google Voice via hangouts on the other carriers.

Going back & looking at my Nexus 5 preorder I had a ship date of November 22nd & end up receiving it on the 7th. These ship dates might just be placeholders

Makes me wonder what the heck is going on that carriers would intentionally gimp their inventory like this.

Will they have the 64GB version available online from sprint?

sprint usually only sells the 32gb variant of these celebrity phones.

Its not a official source. Google didn't over produce the "Blue" ones as they can't even keep them in stock so there is no surplus. This is a bust article from a bust reddit post.

Wouldn't matter anyway. If Sprint's getting limited stock my experience with the One M7 would suggest they won't sell outright; you'd need to be a new customer or upgrade on contract.

That's what I'm trying to do. Returned my Note 4 after 8 days because it was announced they would be carrying it. Was looking to get it at the contract renewal price, but if they're only going to carry the blue 32 (I want the white 64), then I may just go back to the Note 4 (or even switch carriers) as I can't afford to buy the phone outright for Play Store or Moto. Oh well. We'll see how true it is.

Yea I bought mine outright...I'm not thinking I'll stay on Sprint another 2 years considering how awful their coverage continues to be.
Also If I'm overseas, I can just plop a nano-sim in a single device.

That's the way I'm leaning also. By the time I save up for it, maybe it will actually be available to purchase from the play store. I'll just take it to whatever carrier I like.

Catch being with carrier devices...who knows what the FCC final rules on carrier-locked devices will be come the new year. Presuming that carrier sold Nexus 6s will end up being carrier locked (for duration of contract or what have you).

Yeah, last year Sprint only carried the 16GB Model of the Nexus 5. I end up getting the 32GB model from the Playstore but was unable to insure it through Sprint. I honestly expect the same this year. As bad as their bleeding customers you would think they would offer more variety. If I have issues activating my 64GB variant this will push me over the edge & I'm going to T-Mobile
