Verizon did not dump The Nexus One, Google getting out of the Phone Sales Business - Nexus One General

Found this on another board and thought it was worth sharing:
http://androidheadlines.com/2010/05/verizon-dumps-nexus-one-google.html
Does not look like any more phones are going to come directly from Google, however, I am still VERY happy with my Nexus One!!

Ill reserve my judegement for an official announcement, I dont see anything that indicates google is done with phones.

They are definitely not done with phones. They will continue to develop the software, and might just pull out of the "hardware" business and leave that to HTC.

well the only thing confirmed in the article is that Verizon did not cancel the phone. Google did.
Rest is pure speculation of the blogger. If Google wanted to quit completely... why did they launch the at&t version?
Phones for verizon and Sprint (CDMA etc) are not as straight forward as for T-Mobile and At&T (GSM). The phones have to be locked to verizon and sprint.. they are always at the mercy of the provider. GSM are standard based and all you need is SIM card to move from one service to other. You are not tied to a carrier.
Anyways... I will avoid speculating further myself...There are just way too many things going on in the corporate world.
Just be assured... Google has shares in the market... they will have to release a press release and give good reason to cancel phone business as the phone business was in black. They can't cancel any profitable business without explaining it to investors.

The nexus one is profitable to google? At&t version shouldn't be too hard since it's gsm like T-Mobile. Maybe they just decided they don't want to make a cdma phone since gsm is the standard around the world anyway.

What google wants to do can't be done with the two biggest cell phone companies because it's a closed ecosystem.

yes. Nexus One is profitable
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/15/feel-goodroid-nexus-one-is-in-the-black-60k-android-devices-ac/

Not one sentence of that is from a public/official source. Google on the other hand has said publicly that they are making money, they are happy with what they were getting out of it, they plan to stay in it for the long haul. Hmmmm.

I actually like that the nexus has poor sales.... Its a great phone than no one bought (mostly due to zero marketing and lack of tech support) so it gives it a sense of exclusivity. Usually to get such exclusivity you have to buy a crappy phone or a really overpriced one. and google is not hurting financially... this was more of a science project for them
Its quite different from when I had my iphone... I remember I would be out on a dinner and when the “apple ringtone” went off, 10 people would bust out their iphones, no people contantly ask me what phone i have

Google should have put a Beta tag on google.com/phone.
Then no one would have complained about the low sales and it would be clear that this is just them getting their feet wet.
Put it this way: the next phone Google sells on their website, you can be guaranteed that sales (and off-line advertising) will be much higher.

no one will have brand new google phone anymore.

I went to google.com/phone and I didn't see anything about this on there. Is this news offical? I'm 24 more days away from ordering my Nexus One and I was hoping to have it delivered to my house and such. Damn, I wanted to get my phone engraved too.

I still don't see a timetable in either of those two links. It might be better if I went over to t-mobile store and picked one up.. that way I could see if "dust is under the screen" or some sorta damage on it... idk..
Looks as though they will still sell it online and in stores and eventually they will do away with online all together.

Yep they just "announced" it. No specific date on when they'r pulling the plug on the online store.

Few have it..it IS unique...but noone knows wth it is and just assume its some stupid iphone.
Only cel store folks have had any clue of what it is.

Im assuming you wear fruit of the loom shirts , lee jeans , walmart sneakers ,no belt , a blank cap , drive a GM vehicle , and use plain black stock headphones.
Some people like to things because they are unique. Some people dont enjoy looking or using the same exact thing or way that everyone else does.

is this true at all?

i want to upgrade to the N1 when it hits sprint, i hope soon?
anyways im hearing the phone itself won't be in sprint stores and you cannot get it serviced at sprint either. you have to buy it online from google and send it in for repairs, is this true? if soo i smell a BIG fail coming. will the phone even be branded with a sprint logo at all?
Why is this posted in the HERO forum?
That sounds consistent with how the N1 has been sold so far, as far as I know.

Well that has been their trend so far with the other carriers, so it's very possible, but it's kind of to early to tell art this point
That's Google's new method--buy from google.com/phone and don't worry about anything else.
Who cares if it's Sprint branded? As long as it's considered an upgrade you'll get your nice price.

Well, the problem is that since you bought it from google.com, when you have problems and call Sprint for help, they can say "You have to call Google."
Of course, Google doesn't seem to have any publicly available phone numbers for you to call, so you're stuck with their worthless message boards...
Plus, if the actual hardware craps out, you can't walk into a Sprint store and get it replaced the same afternoon, you have to deal with shipping in two directions and be without a phone for a week....
Or at least that seems to be the major complaint about the N1 currently on the market....
just wait for the evo 4g, its got better specs then the nexus and a bigger screen,

Hang on to your hero then. I still have every phone in my sig as a backup. I'm glad that google is doing SOMETHING to shake up the status quo a bit. Remember if you buy phones that are sold and supported by sprint, you'll have to wait on sprint for things like android 2.1, just like we're doing now. If google is able to get sprint (and other us carriers) to budge from their traditional phone-tied-to-carrier model, it'll just put us one step closer to breaking the wireless phone oligopoly.
Many years ago, you had to buy your land line telephones from your land line provider. They were sold and supported there, and they had very high costs. Then over time, that changed and people bought phones that weren't branded by their carrier. (or supported by them either, omg!). I'm sure it was a very scary time, but think about how ridiculous that sounds today.

Google changes plan, will stop selling Nexus One online.

Wow. just plain wow. Did not see this coming at all.
Google will stop selling it online, and instead will let the carriers sell the phone instead.
Reason? Google says it's because customers want a hands-on experience before buying the phone itself.
The online store was for early adopters+niche market.
Just to clarify things up: The Nexus One is not dead, it just won't be available online, only through carriers as stated by the employee:
More retail availability. As we make Nexus One available in more countries we’ll follow the same model we’ve adopted in Europe, where we're working with partners to offer Nexus One to consumers through existing retail channels. We’ll shift to a similar model globally.
From retail to viewing. Once we have increased the availability of Nexus One devices in stores, we'll stop selling handsets via the web store, and will instead use it as an online store window to showcase a variety of Android phones available globally.

It's different news tho. That one was an article on why Verizon probably didn't carry the Nexus One. This is google officially coming out to say they will stop selling it.
If it really is repetitive, then feel free to lock. 0.o
Does this mean we can finally get subsidized N1s? If so I'm going to sale my N1 while they are still worth something. Then use money to get subsidized one.
The ONLY thing Google has conceded, in no longer exclusively selling the N1 via website, is that people don't want to buy something site-unseen.
Nexus One lives on, but now will be more readily available for people to "kick the tires" before buying.

Interesting... I wonder how Google is going to get retail stores to showcase the N1? By Google paying the Retailers a portion of the profits for each one sold but maintaining control or by giving the retailers total control over the phone and the retailers paying Google for each N1 sold?
Thoughts?
Shoot, I'm keeping mine. They sold so few of them, it might someday be a collectors item.
So then how are AT&T versions of the N1 to be sold when AT&T clearly doesn't want to sell it?

FINALLY
Finally, we can stop seeing all these RETARDED articles about "awwwmagad was the nexus one a faylure!?!?"
NO!
The Nexus One was GREAT!!!! The store was not.
If it wasn't for the N1, phones like the Incredible or the Evo would most likely have come out much, much later than they did/will. It certainly raised the bar for "high-end" Android phones, and smartphones in general.
I'm also sad about this, because as attn1 mentioned, what's going to happen when carriers like AT&T don't want to carry a particular phone in the future?? Buying a phone through Google for AT&T was like a big "Hey AT&T, here's a /middle finger for you!"
AND not only does it allow phone manufacturers to make and sell a device without worrying about the carrier blocking it, but it allows for selling it worldwide without even taking into account WHICH carrier it's designed for. Grab the phone, use it in Canada, India, Europe, etc.
How many people on this forum would never have an N1 had it not been for the Google store?
Last but certainly not least, it also leaves the phone bloat-ware free! Can you imagine the Nexus Two with AT&T crapware and not being able to install non-market apps like the Backflop??
I really, really, really hope this isn't the last we've seen of the Google store. There are just too many benefits aside from the above three. At the least, I hope the Google Store will be an addition to carrier-sold phones.

Tmobile Credit

Might be inappropriate in this forum, if so I apologize. But if you are posting to 'Samsung Vibrant General', then you have Tmobile...
I called TMO again asking for any update regarding the GPS bug, they gave me the same old script.
I asked if there was anything they could do to credit or compensate my account for the lack of functionality.
I was put on hold for 1 minute and then was given a $20 statement credit.
Maybe if they have to dish out plenty of those, they'll also get on Samsung's back harder.
Good Luck.
bugging tmob and asking for credits does nothing to help with fixing the gps problem, especially since they have pretty much nothing to do with the issue. if you don't like the phone or can't live without gps, return it until it's fixed.
What lack of functionality? GPS?

what makes you think this is free money? for every credit tmob gives for an invalid reason (like gps not working on a phone that tmobile doesn't make), that delays things like hspa+ expansion, getting more and better phones available, etc. not to mention the fact that a bunch of people calling and asking for this credit is going to make a lot of customer care reps miserable, at least that was my experience when i worked customer care for tmob years ago.
if you are so unhappy with the phone, return it. but as far as tmob goes, you are receiving all the services you are paying them for with this phone.

I'm happy with my phone and personally I never use the GPS for anything hense why i don't really care.
Here is my point and i will shut up. We have these phones there is a "problem" and t-mobile can give you "something" for your troubles. i suggest you take it. Tmobo reps are there to serve I don't care if I bug them its there job. Its not like the CS reps are the developers for Samsung when we aren't calling. Plus this doesn't hinder the development in fact its the opposite they actually will press Samsung in the future for a better product as well as increase there testing of said product.
At least in theory.
my two cents
JTHM for life
so i take it when you get your credit card bills, you ask the post office to pay part of it since the mail did not make you happy and they delivered it?
or when you buy clothing that tears up early or has some bad material etc, do you go to the store and ask for money.
you either take it back or you keep it, outside of that there is nothing else they will do. If you bug tmobo reps over something they or tmobile has control over that is one thing. Do you thing tmo just said, "hey samsung, release a defective item, we dont care".
and when you say tmobile can give you "something", thats really liberal, they didnt say, for your troubles take this, you said "for my troubles i want this". big difference

I'm not coming back to this topic again and I know the person I quoted isn't coming back either, but I just had to say this.
Look at what is in bold in the quote. T-Mobile isn't giving us "something" for our troubles. You, or the OP(whomever it is), is "asking" for credit. If T-Mobile offered me free credit, then hell yeah I'll take it, but I'm not going to ask for credit unless it's appropriate. For example, the stupid salesman at the T-Mo store didn't charge me $249 for the phone like they were suppose to, so I had to ask for a $15 credit, which I deserve since they promised me a full upgrade price.
If I was having issues with the phone, I would just return it for a refund and then rebuy it when it's fixed or a better phone comes out.
That's it, bye.
true i agree on that money is money
i have had any problems with GPS so far, but i had also did the fixes that was available, so far it works great, but money is money and if their is a way i can get something off my bill from my service provider whether its there fault or not i will do that.

you're right and you're wrong and heres why... Cell service carriers are ultimately responsible for the phones used on their network since they are the ones who limit our choices of models in the first place. If Tmo didnt require its users to choose from a list of cell phones they authorize then I wouldnt hold them accountable for them, but since they do i expect them to have fully researched and tested all models that they impress upon us to buy. If I could buy my phone directly from the manufacturer and choose my service provider from there then I would only hold the manufacturer responsible. I understand the difficulty GSM CDMA TDMA and varying network bands but this is the situation the carriers have gotten themselves into due to competing strategies. If t mobile is willing to issue these credits to then i can only assume that they understand this as well. and since applications like google maps latitude navigation and telenav all require GPS and a data connection to send back and forth i would have to disagree with you again that i am in fact not receiving all the services i am paying them for with this phone. each of these are bundled in the 95% functional phone that t mobile sold me and each of these are why i pay $30 every month to tmo for my data plan
In all Honesty O have been with TMO for 8 years and they have always been fair with me. the last thing they did for me which they were in noway responsible or have to do, was to help me with the HD2. I was trying to get this phone from Walmart for 50, because that was a walmart sell. After 2 days walmart totally screwed up my account and wouldn't sell me the phone. TMO straightened everything out and sent me the HD2 for $50.
Now if you feel that TMO is at fault for the GPS sure call them and get the $20
But have you tried getting into the GPS menu and enabling Skyhook? This works fantastically
*#*#1472365#*#*
Application Settings
Use Skyhook = ON
Back out of the menu
As for getting a credit from the cable company for the faulty box I can guarantee you that if it was a problem from the manufacturer with every box they wouldn't credit you, but wait for a firmware update.
IMO TMO should do the same. this is a samsung problem since other phones have no problems with GPS on TMO's Network

Nexus S Supply/Demand

What do you think it is going to be like on the 16th? When BestBuy says stuff like this
There will be no pre-orders on the Nexus S. Units will be distributed on a first-come-first-served basis on launch day. We will use a ticketing system much like we do on Black Friday to allocate inventory and keep the process organized.

it worries me I mean because Id hate to be without a phone until I found an NS..I have 3 Bestbuys within 20 minutes of me and are pretty sure even if the demand is high enough for them to need to use a ticketing system. or maybe the supply is low? But either way If i have to wake up at 7AM to be there when they open I will
Just curious as to what you all think?
I am not worrying about it. People here seem not very into those modern toys. There are two Bestbuys nearby. I guess I'll just drop by when I wake up.

I really have no clue and wish I did
I think there will be a VERY tiny amount of people that actually know / are ready to buy the Nexus-S on it's debut date but one of the smart guys on here suggested going to a best buy that doesn't sell T-mobile handsets in order to increase your chances.
I'd say you would def be able to get your phone on the day of launch though

Yeah you'll be fine
I mean, in the entire 10 months I've had the Nexus-1 I've only seen one other person with it. Chances are it will be the same for the Nexus-S and you will get it no problems

True, very true, good points. It wouldn't surprise me to see a TV advertisement since Google made that commercial with the view were your looking at the persons feet the whole time.
Im sure they will seeing as the N1 was a "marketing failure" but i really hope we dont end up seeing every other person with a NS...thats why i loved the N1, very unique
Personally, I think your chances of grabbing one are good. It seems to be very similar to the galaxy line, and if samsumg sold 3 million in the us, I know those folks won't be ready to shell out $600.00 four months later.

I am gonna ask my dad, to pick one for me from Cincinnati - Best Buy. There are 3 in cincinnati, I guess. I hope he gets to pick one after 3-4 days from there. Say by 20th December.

Did you read their FAQ? They stated that they are currently spreading the news among all Best Buys. It just takes time and if the manager of the stores don't tell the employees, then expect to hear that from the employees.
The Nexus S doesn't have the popularity of the iPhone, so I'd assume supply/demand will just be fine. Possibly, a Best Buy located in a populated area would get more in stock than those that aren't. Just my guess.

Am I the only one seeing the Nexus S ads on these very forums? (HTC ads come up too).
It's funny talking about the Nexus S with the ad flying around in that ad bar...

I believe the ads are handled by google so figure if your searching for Nexus S on google you will get targeted ads, and this is a phone site so it makes sense

Ive been on the phone with Best Buy/NExus S Call center since 10 AM PST and up until 4PM I was told that they have no information that they can tell me. But then on one of my batches of calls they all told me the same thing, 157 Best Buy stores/Best buy mobile will be getting them.
But i was also told buy one of the reps, who i talked to for a good 45 minutes about the subject that they get new information every day and i should continue calling them because they give out info as they get it
He says that by the 14th they should have information as to what stores will be getting the NS.
Take it for what its worth, thats just the info i got from them . Just doing some digging of my own but i will be calling to see if there is anything new they can tell me and ill keep you guys updated if anything
You know, I really don't think it'll be out of stock. You should be able to get a piece easily.

This might be why you can’t find a Nexus 6 in the Google Play Store right now

http://bgr.com/2014/10/30/nexus-6-sold-out-in-google-play-store/
The publication says the Nexus 6 is “huge” for Google’s future in the smartphone company, and the phone is intended to be sold mainly through carriers, rather than on Google Play.

Interesting read if for nothing more than the comments
Dumb. Dumb.
Another great flagship phone that next to no one can buy...instead of by design due to a moronic invite system...this time due to a moronic inventory choice.
Heads are going to roll for this 3 years mess: Today Andy Rubin, co-founder and former leader of Google Inc.’s Android mobile business is leaving Google!
Not sure exact reason but....

How is it moronic if numbers say most will buy through a carrier. Seems like a simple choice to me.
Sent from my LG-VS980 using Tapatalk
It could be that there is an official agreement to allow carriers to sell most of the devices. Of course, if that were the case they never should have offered a Play Store pre-sale in the first place.
Just seems like a typical BGR article. They're a rag of a site that makes up news
BGR..... I cant even bring myself to click their click bait $*¥+ any more

When Google has a golden opportunity to sell a device that most carriers haven't even listed on their sites yet or formally announced plans to carry, and make money...it is moronic.
Having a flagship device that no one can buy due to your (Google's) idiotic bureaucratic decision making is how to get people who otherwise are your fan base pissed at you...see the idiocy of One+

Its not moronic if that was the condition carriers wanted if they were to carrier the product. I'm pretty sure the men making these decisions know more than the all of us here. Not to mention they have access to numbers and info we don't to make such a decision.

people need to stop crying and just go into their carrier and buy it there. it's not like it isn't the same phone online.

The phone isn't even released yet... People need to calm down. Even IF you were able to preorder it would still have been weeks before you got the phone.

Odds are it isn't.
You get some degree of bloat (albeit removable it sounds like) and what is more delayed updates.

tmobile nexus 4 and 5 was the same one from the play store nothing different. it still got the updates from Google. no bloat at all unless Google put it on there. I can't speak about the others. I am buying mine on the 12th from the tmo store and I am sure it will be the same one Google sends out.

This is one of two things I was worried about if I have to pick it up from T-Mo:
- 1) I just want to make sure the updates come from Google and not the carrier (T-Mo in this case). Especially since I will be paying all upfront for it since I am prepaid and don't want to sign up for a post paid plan. There's no sense in me having to wait for an update if I'm not tied to any sort of plan or carrier.
- 2) I would very much rather purchase directly from the Play Store if only for the GREAT 1-year hassle-free warranty coverage they have. I had to do a warranty exchange a few weeks ago on my N5, and whole procedure was absolutely painless. I had my replacement device in-hand the very next day.
So, as much as I would prefer to buy it from the Play Store, if the speculation that the majority of sales will be taking place through the carriers and the supply on the Play Store will be scarce, I would just want the T-Mo phone to be EXACTLY like the one they sell in the Play Store, with no carrier meddling/bloatware.
Google news for us in the uk then as long as there is a decent amount of stock as no carriers have listed it as exclusive to either O2, ee, Vodafone or three afaik

I'm really hoping the same thing doesn't happen in the U.K. with Stock issues
Hopefully its all under control by then, and they just put it on the site for sale and ship the same time as the US

1.) Same freaking phone no doubt about it. Its been said a billion times. Updates from google Tmobile bloat
2.) You get next day shipping with Tmobile if you have their insurance plan which I recommend as it extends it past the 1 year google offers.
