Major Camera Issues! - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo General

I am REALLY hoping I may just have a defective/lemon unit (as I could swap it out)... I need some testers willing to submit similar shots to see if this is actually a manufacturing defect/issue or just the unit I have currently.
My images are showing major image warp, almost like a fisheye effect but worse. Easily most noticeable when taking pictures of legible text. I have used both stock and Google camera, yielding same results. I took pictures of the Droid Turbo & my S5 boxes.
I am on Version 21.21.15.en.US for the record (latest update) in case this may have been cause by firmware/software...

I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to. I don't really see anything except slight blurring towards the middle, wouldn't call that major but I get what you mean. However, I took an image of the back of my box so you can compare it.

The majority of cameras have image distortion. Photoshop even has an option to fix it. Usually this distortion is fixed through post-processing but maybe Motorola isn't doing it, or not enough?

I hope you're kidding? Do you not see the text bending/waving all over the place? It is basically acting like there are multiple fish eyes in one picture...
I don't notice this on any other phone I own. Either a software issue or a defect with the lense or function of the sensor in the camera.

Just look at the text, not the box itself.

I think I get what you're pointing out. The text is clear where you point the focus to, but the further you move away from it, the more blurry it gets? I think that's just the way the focus is. TBH, I never even noticed it till now. Could be a software issue though.

Not even just that, the text itself is warped. It's not straight, it's all over the place. I'll edit a picture and post more specifically what I mean.

Not a problem at all. No "major" issue. Looks almost 100% fine. If you want great pictures get an actual camera. There is NOTHING major about this.
Edit: if people are having a hard time seeing your issue it's nothing to complain about.

I do see size differences in the text and the wavy you're speaking of. My assumption would be that when the megapixels is increased you see more of the paper not being perfectly straight or flattened so you get this affect? Idk. My guess. I don't see it as much but I just wanted to say I appreciate all the feedback on this phone as i haven't gotten one yet and am looking at people's reviews. Not trying to shoot you down.

I thought the same thing initially. Perhaps the box was not flat or the printed text itself was an issue, not the case. Which is why I took pictures of two different boxes. Same issues recurred.
I also took same pictures with my S5 and iPad 3. No similar effects. They take pictures with straight text, the tops do tend to warp a tad, but nothing in the centers. Nothing close to what my Turbo is doing.
I'm asking others to take pictures to see if it is something to do with the lens, glass, sensor, idk? I am on the latest firmware/software and all apps are up to date.

Also, it seems to provide worse results with HDR enabled. This may be software based...

can it be related to the 4:3 ratio instead of 16:9? try 15mpx mode

Hmm you could test maybe to see if it's hardware vs software. I'm thinking maybe hardware would be more likely to give a consistent distortion (I.e. in same location and to same amount), whereas a software defect may cause distortion but more randomly across various tests. Try getting grid paper and set up the phone (so its securely in place) to take pictures perpendicular from page. Then compare several pictures by examining the deviation from straight lines of the grid and see if they happen consistently in the same spots or randomly with little to no consistancy.

I would agree with the OP - that this is an issue in his phone.
A strong driver for me to upgrade from my Droid Maxx to the Turbo is the 21 mpx camera. And if that one has issues, then I stay put with what I have for now.

put a straight edge on the line of the box, third picture I think.
To the naked eye it looks bent all over the place. I lined the edge of a sheet of paper against it, and it's straight. Probably just the font and an optical illusion, some people are more sensitive to this type of perception than others.

Disapointed with DROID X camera (photos inside)

The photos that come from this phone litterally sucks.. all my photos come out grainy and pixely. That is with flash on and off. Taking self pics come out even worse. Gets dark and stuff. Would not reccomend this phone for its camera.

You have to be a bit more objective than that.
I have come from an Incredible, EVO, TP2 and have seen the iphone4 pictures.
I think so far the X has better low light performance than everything aside form the iphone. You also want to make sure you have the phone set to 8MP as default it is at 6MP.
Try messing around with the ISO sensitivity, maybe on auto it is selecting too high of an ISO generating a lot of noise.
The device also does a much better job in macro shots as well than any of the other phones. We are not at point and shoot replacement category yet with any of the phones, namely because all the sensors are nothing more than small 10$ units. But they are light years better than a year ago.
I had the nexus one and the pictures that came from those were CRYSTAL clear! I loved them. Now these are all blurry and grainy. Im going to upload examples soon. As you can see none of them come out clear and all have a little grain in them

My DroidX has the exact same problem - black screen on all camera / video apps. I tried factory reset and all, but no use. I took it back to BestBuy and they said they'd replace it once they got their next shipment in (whenever that will be).
Here is a night shot I took with my X
I agree, the camera on this phone isn't all that great, I too get better shots with my N1.
I was aware of this before I bought the phone, seeing all the pictures & videos that've been posted over the past few days, but I decided to go for the phone anyway.
If a camera is a major requirement on your phone I'd get one of the Galaxy S phones, camera is amazing on that.

somehow i woke up this morning and gave it another shot(so to speak) and it worked. i did nothing to change it, just went to sleep. hope yours starts working too...
i bought it partially for the camera. i didn't buy it because it was the best camera on a phone but it is up there. for in door pictures of yourself, you aren't going to be able to tell if its auto focusing correctly. that is one of the issues with the phone is in door auto focusing. you might want to use a mirror to make sure it does it correctly. the camera button is used to focus then capture. you should see the in door quality on the evo, it is the worst lol. and of course the droid x rapes the nexus one on just about everything so finding one thing the nexus one is better at is no surprise.
the galaxy s phones are a good option but they don't have a flash, so who knows how well it will do depending on how dark it is.
6mp vs 8mp
Nevermind.

Nexus One vs. Samsung Captivate side by side *videos-pics*

I would like to see a side by side comparison of the screens close up on the same picture. Engadget did this for the N1 and iPhone4 to show the difference in being able to see pixels on the screen. Just curious how good a super AMOLED screen looks up close compared to an AMOLED screen. Also, it would be nice to see the difference in the camera quality in pictures taken by the N1 vs. the Captivate.
A comparison would be great.
I'm too fed up with my Samsung Jack and couldnt wait for WP7 so I can compare it myself against Android (I really like having Outlook on my phone which is the main reason I didnt get an Android device till now).
I just ordered the Captivate. Been messing around with a friend's N1 running Froyo and its pretty damn good, so I guess i'd like to see how the two stack up, especially given that Captivate still runs 2.1 and ATT sucks at upgrading in a timely manner.
I would like too see a screen comparison, camera and build quaility. Thanks..
I would love to see some side by side shots etc. Especially the performance of the camera against the Nexus one's.
More importantly I would like to see the OP updated instead of having to scroll through the thread .
Thanks in advance!

I'm not just gonna do some huge review based on my opinion that no one would give a crap about, that's stupid. The purpose of this thread was to see if there was anything specific that someone would want to see.
I'm not gonna get into any opinion based stuff, like build quality. Pictures and video make it easy for people to make their own decisions.

I haven't done much with the Captivate today other than what I'm doing for this thread, so its hard to say.
A couple of things, the screen is awesome. I hate to say this, but it feels faster than my N1. Just has a snappier feel. Its killing the N1 on web page loading times.
Not having a trackball to wake the phone up is killing me. Not being able to sideload apk's without using adb is really getting old too. Of course I couldn't use Titanium backup to redo all my apps+data, so thats a *huge* set back.
Added photos....
Did you get the Tmobile version or the AT&T version? I like the Tmobile version better. AT&T likes to **** around with physical specs and styles.
Unfortunately I just bought my Nexus on contract with Tmobile, so no new phones for a while (which doesn't bother me).
Regardless I would like some side by side pics of thickness and screen size. Supposedly Froyo was going to be available in August to all of the Galaxy 2's. I don't know how the carriers are going to handle it but thats what I read.
Also I think while the Samsung looks brighter (semi-negative) I think it has better contrast with the colors. The Nexus 1 looks a tad washed out. Nothing major though. It could also be the auto light sensor as well.
Both phones are look great. I would probably be really on the fence about the N1 or Samsung if I was in the market and had neither. Lots of my friends are looking at Android and I am referring them to the Samsung just because of the new processor and high specs on the major carriers (AT&T mostly).
I think if the Galaxy is popular enough, we may see a large community fan base that is able to root and support custom roms and tweaks. Because I like to tinker it would be a hard decision right now to buy the Samsung until a few months when we learn more about the bootloader and ease of roms.
If the Samsung was able to be opened up like the Nexus, it would be a no brainer purchase. With limited knowledge about the Sammy right now I think I would wait to see how it shapes up or get the Nexus if you couldn't wait. Or buy both like the OP!
Update, just added a video to the top post, showing some speed tests. Sorry for the crappy quality, I have a decently old cam.
Also, just copied an Xvid avi file right to the phone, it plays great. I also got speeds around 6-8MB/second while copying, which trumps the N1's 2MB speed.

Consistent blurry pictures with flash *big picture warning*

I can actually say I haven't been able to take 1 clear picture with flash. Is there something wrong with my phone? I have a fairly steady hand, I used to be a DSLR photographer and never had any problems. What gives to this? here are some examples, not even a moving object. These pictures are taken stabilized on my knee

R.I.P., Left Shift key.
As a rule, indoor pictures with the Evo are just poor quality. Outside, they're crystal clear, but even with the flash, when you're inside the camera is adjusting the exposure to the ambient light, which means grainy, blurry pics. There are some tweaks you can do to minimize this (white balance, exposure defaults, etc.) but in general it's just not that great.
Same with video: If you're inside, the camcorder drops down to, like, 8-10fps capture. Outside it does much better. It's all about the ambient lighting.
the lighting looks bad, and plus you gotta click in the pic to focus it and then hold down the shutter button untill you see your pic, thats the only way i can take pics

i cant beleive, or i missed, no one pointing this out.
you are friggin shaking in the picture dude.
no picture will look good when there is movement.
but i side with you, my camera compared to my wifes camera is garbage.
my wifes takes consistantly better video and stills than mine does.
mine will show the camera focusing and all it does is focus near then far, then stops, it never stops on the right focus point, you can see where it focuses right on past it.
if there was a hack to allow a slider for focus that would be kick ass.
after some time and practice it would be easy to use the slider for focus.
but my shots such ass, big time.
if i Zoom in it will focus much better than if it isnt.
so i am not sure where the focus point is compared to where you place your finger but it isnt where you place your finger thats for sure.
It sounds like a problem my phone seemed to have in the beginning; it would focus and then stop auto focus a little blurry. I don't know what fixed it, but after I had the phone a few weeks, the issue seemed to go away. Now I can take pretty clear and amazingly focused photos.
As for the iPhone troll, I ignored him as I was on a website viewing some flash content on my phone just after I got done with a video conference on 3G . I then made a phone call and held the phone with both hands without dropping the call.

You do know that the camera tech is almost identical? Only thing that is changing the "quality" of the pictures/video is software + compression.
Another typical oblivious iPhone user...

Check your camera, there might be a problem !

I just found out that there might be something really wrong with the camera optical part of the Desire HD. I don't think all phones are concerned, but I'm pretty sure that HTC put a good batch of bad phones on the market.
The main problem is that a side of your picture may be completly blurry. It can be the left side or the right side.
This can be better seen if you watch your picture in full screen on your computer. It's not obvious on small pics.
Already two guys (3 with me) complained about the same issue on the forum.
The website GSMarena reported the problem on their review of the phone :
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_desire_hd-review-534p6.php
I quote : "Our Desire HD unit (an off-the-shelf phone) did have an obvious lens issue, which smudges the left side of the photos."
Also by observing a lot of pictures on google taken with the DHD, you can see the same issue.
It would be great if as many as possible would check their phone, come and report in this thread. So we could know how many phones are concerned.
At last, here are 4 samples, two taken with my DHD (blurry on the left), the other ones with the DHD of a friend of mine (blurry on the right). No need to say the lens was clean and not scratched ! :
Look on the left :

Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
nope... not a single blur...
even i got mine in late october from cpw..

i may be blind but your pictures look in to me
On some I have blur:

On others no blur:

(click on the magnifying glass to zoom)
I think this is connected with the pixel cropping. In order to be wide screen, the photo is cropped.
Also the non blured photos were taken on the stock 1.32 rom.
Clearly it's a software issue...
I got mine December.

Your blurred pictures look the same like mine, blurred on the left.
You talk about non blurred photos, but you just show one, and this one is a close shot, so maybe it's not so much significant. But as you said it was from your old stock firmware, I would be curious to know if you have others coming with this firmware, and showing no blur ...

On the two first pictures, just look at the stones. There is many details on the right, and it is completly blurred on the left. All my pics from this day at the beach look the same LoL
My camera do not have the blur problem that you mentioned, but it has the pink tint problem, like the HD2. The pink tint is best visible when the background is white. Not sure if any member alrdy mentioned about it, sorry if this problem has already been discussed and fixed!
My camera works great and no blur problems. The pinkish tone is there in some cases but it´s just to tone down saturation a tiny bit in a photo editor afterwards and it´s gone.
I had blurry and out of focus pics with an earlier HTC Legend though. It is a lens failure i guess from the manufacturer. I have also heard some people has problems with the autofocus "motor" it looks fine in the focus but when you press the shutter key it looses the "lock" and the pic gets blurry and ugly.
I guess it´s bit of lottery today with all electonics
my hd has blur on right side
in my camera guide you can see non of my pics has the issue even at full scale, taken using both 1.32 and 1.72, never noticed a pink thing either
its interesting to test if this is related to wide screen cropping option
either way this HTC batch thing is getting on my nerves, like the two screen types, let alone HTC skipped slcd on such an expensive phone, mine has annoying scanelines
its always something with HTC
Mine has a blur on the left of pictures

Nothing on mine, crystal clear pictures everytime,, well when im holding the phone properly anyway!

I just tried changing for 4:3 and saddly the issue is still here
Well I think you were talking about that, isn't it ?
Btw, I'm sorry for your screen problem, I wasn't aware of that. Hopefully the DHD is still a nice mobile for Android, despite its many problems.
Hey this might sound silly but have you looked at the lens cover and maybe given it a wipe?
Once I took a picture that looked like that classic (oiled up baking paper filter)... i thought wtf!! my phones dying in the a**...
but then yeah... I gave it a wipe and all is ok. A single finger print on the lens cover could distort the look of a picture.

I know some don't have good zoom, but I checked them on my pc, they are fine. Some have little blur, but I think this is the focus, or hand tremble.
edit: I noticed that the camera lens is a little bit off-centred. I saw that every DHD has this problem. Maybe the issues are connected.

[petition] kill the lg g3 oversharpening!

Hey guys!
If you've been using the LG G3 for a while now you're probably heard of the oversharpening problem. While I'm not sure how many of you care about this, I have seen quite a few discussions about this problem on the forum.
I made a thunderclap petition to hopefully get LG's attention and get them to release an update that either removes the sharpening or allows us to toggle it on or off.
http://pocketnow.com/2014/07/22/lg-g3-sharpening
Thanks in advance to everyone who decides to participate.
This is another one of those 'problems' I fail to see, much like the 'lag'.....

Ya i agree, I think its mostly psychological, one of those once you see it you cant unsee it, like a dead pixel.
I am running my phone on paranoidAndroid and it doesnt have sharpening and I don't see the difference , both look great
Its obviously there, even in TWRP, if you cant see it don't complain when other people can. It IS there.
Not too convinced about this thunderclap site as I dont like to share this stuff on my social accounts, but you have my support.
This sharppening is so stupid I cant even find words to describe it.
I guess it is here to trick clueless people into seing a difference with other screens ? :s

Id love to see this in a photo, could you please show us a photo of the screen with a sharpen test or black text on grey background?
What sharpening?

That glow/outline you see around, for example, black letters on gray background.
I can't believe there's somebody who can't see it. Check your eyes or maybe there's another display model/manufacturer?
No sharpening no lag here D851. I really dont think a petition would solve this so called issue any way. Good luck though.

Not everyone have this... Like me and the other guys...
Been looking for that over sharpening effect with no luck... D855 32GB
I am fairly confident that there are different quality display panels out there, the sharpening issue seems to be linked to this (which also appears to be linked to brightness levels).
Those without the issue have displays that can go to brighter levels, those with the issues tend to have dimmer displays (even on max brightness).
Those without the issue only see the issue if they go to 'sub-zero' brightness levels with an app like Lux.
My belief is LG realised that some panels were poor(er) so adjusted the sofware to assist.
If anyone can't see it, use lux to reduce brightness a bit below zero and have a look at a text heavy webpage; its awful.
Try not using lux, maybe thats the issue... Who needs below 0 brightness?
Using LUX is not a problem, it is a very good app.
If you go below 0 then moan that is your own fault, going below 0 is not a function the phone is designed to do and when you "mod" you do so at your own risk.
I do go below 0 for night mode, but you don't see me on here moaning about sharpening issues.
______
That being said, some people (not me) do have issues with sharpening when their phone is above 0, but I believe this is because their phones are naturally darker, so their say 10 brightness might be the same as my -10, which is why they are seeing sharpening in 'normal' conditions when I am not.
What's brightness got to do with it? Its just as obvious at 100% as it is below 0.
All G3s have it, some people just cant see it, if you cant think yourself lucky.

"all g3's have it"..... no they don't at least not at normal operating levels.
If my display is anywhere between -2 and +100 brightness there is no sharpening effect at all, no glow, no weird text no nothing it is a perfect display - this is a fact, not my eyes.
if I go to around -4 you can see it until I go down to about -10 then it stops again.
I am not questioning the issue, I have seen and compared my display with others who do have the problem and it can be a real issue, but not everyone has it.
As for what does brightness have to do with it, I am trying to find out what the differences are between those that have the issue and those that don't and the only common denominator is the fact that all the displays that have the issue cannot go as bright as those that do not have the issue.
e.g. 100% brightness on my phone will be significantly brighter than 100% on someone who suffers from oversharpening.
This is also why when the G3 was first released there were lots of threads on here about the display being too dim.
Then take a picture and prove it. Its on every variant, every firmware. Its there.

because variants and firmware doesn't alter the quality of the LCD panel!
are you not reading? There are plenty of people here on XDA who say they have no issue, including quite a few with very high credibility levels, who have nothing to gain from lying.
And sorry I cannot currently take a picture as I am not in the habit of carrying a second camera device around with me.....

Does it appear if you take a screenshot (Power + Vol Dwn)?
I have a rogers D852 and tried to replicate the Black text on gray background and I don't see it. Brightness on 100% but I normally keep it at Auto.

Its got nothing to do with the LCD panel quality, its an artificial post processed effect, its nothing to do with the hardware. Ive seen the phones of some people who say they dont have it, they have it! I bet if I saw your phone id see it at all brightness levels. Its less obvious at low brightness, but thats just a natural result of the dim display, its still there.
I don't care about 'credibility'. Just because someone is good at making ROMs or whatever it doesn't mean they have good eyes. They have the effect, they just don't notice it. There is no other explanation for why LG released the phone with this effect, its hideous to those that see it.
