Nexus One vs. Samsung Captivate side by side *videos-pics* - Nexus One General

I just picked up a captivate, haven't even unboxed it yet.
I'm going to hang onto my N1, so if anyone wants to see any side by side comparisons, please ask away.
My Nexus is unlocked/rooted running CM6-RC1.
Let me know guys. This is the kind of thing I wanted to see before buying one, but no one had done it, so I just want to help others out in the name of science.
----------------------------------------------------
Here is a video of some side by side speed tests...

OK, here is a batch of pics I just shot. One of my homescreen (both phones setup the same with ADW launcher) Both phones are set to 50% screen brightness.
Several shots of each phone playing one of the 720p vids that came with the Galaxy S
One shot of a hi res photo taken with my camera
http://www.boostedvr4.com/pics/n1/ All of the photos were resized with Photoshop.
---------------------------------------
OK, here is a vid I shot outside with the Captivate. Youtube kinda killed it.

Here are some photos taken with each phone. Everything is set to auto, and largest size/best quality on each phone. The flash on the N1 is OFF. Again, resized with photoshop.

I would like to see a side by side comparison of the screens close up on the same picture. Engadget did this for the N1 and iPhone4 to show the difference in being able to see pixels on the screen. Just curious how good a super AMOLED screen looks up close compared to an AMOLED screen. Also, it would be nice to see the difference in the camera quality in pictures taken by the N1 vs. the Captivate.

A comparison would be great.
I'm too fed up with my Samsung Jack and couldnt wait for WP7 so I can compare it myself against Android (I really like having Outlook on my phone which is the main reason I didnt get an Android device till now).
I just ordered the Captivate. Been messing around with a friend's N1 running Froyo and its pretty damn good, so I guess i'd like to see how the two stack up, especially given that Captivate still runs 2.1 and ATT sucks at upgrading in a timely manner.

I would like too see a screen comparison, camera and build quaility. Thanks..

I would love to see some side by side shots etc. Especially the performance of the camera against the Nexus one's.
More importantly I would like to see the OP updated instead of having to scroll through the thread .
Thanks in advance!

What's with the misleading thread title...either you have the photos and did a side by side, or this is all just a big waste of a thread...phail.

:Every time I come to this thread, before there is an actual comparison with pictures/video, I'm going to pissed

I'm not just gonna do some huge review based on my opinion that no one would give a crap about, that's stupid. The purpose of this thread was to see if there was anything specific that someone would want to see.
I'm not gonna get into any opinion based stuff, like build quality. Pictures and video make it easy for people to make their own decisions.
Tomorrow I'll take some shots with each phone and put them up, then put a couple hi res photos on each and take a pic side by side.

Ummm.... where?

i would love if u did this

Hmm, seems like the nexus has a deeper and richer color, correct me if im wrong. Also could you test the GPS issue out on the captivate? I've read that it has problems locking onto gps or sometimes taking a few minutes to do so.

I was just about to comment about the pics, yah I agree. Pic quality on both are great though.

What are your impressions of it after using it for the day? How is the usability of the interface? Any quirks or issues (small or big) that bothers you?

I haven't done much with the Captivate today other than what I'm doing for this thread, so its hard to say.
A couple of things, the screen is awesome. I hate to say this, but it feels faster than my N1. Just has a snappier feel. Its killing the N1 on web page loading times.
Not having a trackball to wake the phone up is killing me. Not being able to sideload apk's without using adb is really getting old too. Of course I couldn't use Titanium backup to redo all my apps+data, so thats a *huge* set back.

Added photos....

Did you get the Tmobile version or the AT&T version? I like the Tmobile version better. AT&T likes to **** around with physical specs and styles.
Unfortunately I just bought my Nexus on contract with Tmobile, so no new phones for a while (which doesn't bother me).
Regardless I would like some side by side pics of thickness and screen size. Supposedly Froyo was going to be available in August to all of the Galaxy 2's. I don't know how the carriers are going to handle it but thats what I read.
Also I think while the Samsung looks brighter (semi-negative) I think it has better contrast with the colors. The Nexus 1 looks a tad washed out. Nothing major though. It could also be the auto light sensor as well.
Both phones are look great. I would probably be really on the fence about the N1 or Samsung if I was in the market and had neither. Lots of my friends are looking at Android and I am referring them to the Samsung just because of the new processor and high specs on the major carriers (AT&T mostly).
I think if the Galaxy is popular enough, we may see a large community fan base that is able to root and support custom roms and tweaks. Because I like to tinker it would be a hard decision right now to buy the Samsung until a few months when we learn more about the bootloader and ease of roms.
If the Samsung was able to be opened up like the Nexus, it would be a no brainer purchase. With limited knowledge about the Sammy right now I think I would wait to see how it shapes up or get the Nexus if you couldn't wait. Or buy both like the OP!

Update, just added a video to the top post, showing some speed tests. Sorry for the crappy quality, I have a decently old cam.
Also, just copied an Xvid avi file right to the phone, it plays great. I also got speeds around 6-8MB/second while copying, which trumps the N1's 2MB speed.

"Upgrade" from Froyo'd Nexus One to Galaxy S?

I have to admit my eye's been caught by this little beauty. The screen is the big attraction for me, particularly the size and the proper multitouch.
For anybody who's had experience with both the Galaxy S and the Nexus One with Froyo, would it be a good decision to trade in my Nexus and get the Galaxy?
I own the nexus outright with no contract, and I'm due an upgrade so could get the Galaxy for minimal expenditure, although stuck then on a 2 year contract.
I'm slightly disappointed about the lack of a camera flash on the Galaxy, although it's not something I ever use much.
Any thoughts?
I'm in exactly the same boat as you.
If they say it'll get froyo soon, or if I see some comprehensive dev going on, I'll probably get it, but I'm still very worried about Gingerbread. Samsung track record on updates is abysmal, right now I'd be shocked if we got it.
There is a lot of talk over the lack of a flash, although as a keen photographer I really don't understand why. Having a flash right next to the lens is the worst place for it anyway.
Besides, it all detracts from the fact that the lens and sensor on the Galaxy S are remarkably good for a mobile phone class of camera, the colour and exposure are very good, and produce very usable results. The lens itself goes down to F2.8 so works well in low light situations, and the screen is bright enough that you can see what you're photographing in bright sunlight, these are far more useful to me than a little LED thats going to put horrible highlights on peoples faces and in their eyes
This is a pic I posted in another thread, taken on the Galaxy S, and is completely untouched apart from a 50% reduction. The colour and exposure are exactly as they were captured. The white balance is spot on, the saturation is good although a little heavy in the greens. Its in focus and reasonably sharp.

Although if you plan to be photographing drunk mates in the pub late at night, then yeah you probably need a flash and dont care so much about image quality, because such pics are never very flattering
Right now, if you have 2.2, you might miss some of the extra features, but the Sammy is gonna get 2.2 soon too, and then there'll be no comparison. I dont have a Nexus One, but I've used the Galaxy S and an HTC Desire side by side, and there is no comparison, am soo glad I waited

thanks for your impressions and image.
from the shots ive seen the camera quality does indeed appear to be above most mobile phone cameras. for me, the pictures are quite nice considering it is a phone camera and readily available at all times.
the flash would have been a nice addition, but the same as trav, i wouldnt use it all that often, and agree that phone flashes are weak to begin with and dont add all that much.

I'm pretty sure we'll get 2.2 on this phone... Samsung said they'll do it, but their word counts for very little obviously after the Behold 2. But market pressure should make them upgrade it. The question really is about Gingerbread. I know the Nexus One is going to get that, but who here can say they expect Samsung to rewrite Touchwiz for an update designed for UI upgrades? That's the real problem here. I can't be sure if this phone has as much future support as the Nexus One.
The Nexus has a flash camera, which is important, but it looks like in every other hardware regard, the Galaxy S wins out. It's all about software now.
youtube. com /watch?v=xAqZ5Hk96QY
I don't know whether I'm being naive, but I'd assumed that by the time gingerbread comes out, the galaxy will be well and truely rooted and it'll be a matter of the necessary community existing to put new versions of android on it.
I do have a slight suspicion that the Nexus One is the better bet in the longer term, but the Galaxy looks so tasty right now!
However, given the shelf life of phones these days, the question will probably be irrelevant in 6 months time when we'll be looking at the latest 2ghz dual-core multi-camera behemoths.
What I'm really wondering is - if the Galaxy S is a significant enough upgrade over the Nexus to make it worthwhile - to be a noticable improvement day to day.
Very good question austinchimp!
If you are hesitating about buying this phone, I would suggest you to wait because if it does not have the features you've always wanted on a phone, sooner or later you'll continue to search for a different phones. That is an expensive strategy. I've waited pretty long for a phone as the SGS, and I don't regret buying it. I don't care about the hype of Iphone 4 or HTC Evo 4G, I love my Sammy.
Hmm interesting, looks like there is no touchwiz 3.0. Although all other samsung apps are there. Is it going to be end for custom UIs?
here is a photo i took the other day indoors with no flash just a light on.. great photo with this camera.

Does anyone speak enough Italian to understand what they're actually saying? Is it not just showing a hacked-on "Froyo style" launcher thing rather than a Froyo update from Samsung?
It's not froyo. It's Eclair running without that much of the touchwiz interface. The notification bar still has the touchwiz though.

Disapointed with DROID X camera (photos inside)

The photos that come from this phone litterally sucks.. all my photos come out grainy and pixely. That is with flash on and off. Taking self pics come out even worse. Gets dark and stuff. Would not reccomend this phone for its camera.

You have to be a bit more objective than that.
I have come from an Incredible, EVO, TP2 and have seen the iphone4 pictures.
I think so far the X has better low light performance than everything aside form the iphone. You also want to make sure you have the phone set to 8MP as default it is at 6MP.
Try messing around with the ISO sensitivity, maybe on auto it is selecting too high of an ISO generating a lot of noise.
The device also does a much better job in macro shots as well than any of the other phones. We are not at point and shoot replacement category yet with any of the phones, namely because all the sensors are nothing more than small 10$ units. But they are light years better than a year ago.
I had the nexus one and the pictures that came from those were CRYSTAL clear! I loved them. Now these are all blurry and grainy. Im going to upload examples soon. As you can see none of them come out clear and all have a little grain in them

My DroidX has the exact same problem - black screen on all camera / video apps. I tried factory reset and all, but no use. I took it back to BestBuy and they said they'd replace it once they got their next shipment in (whenever that will be).

I agree, the camera on this phone isn't all that great, I too get better shots with my N1.
I was aware of this before I bought the phone, seeing all the pictures & videos that've been posted over the past few days, but I decided to go for the phone anyway.
If a camera is a major requirement on your phone I'd get one of the Galaxy S phones, camera is amazing on that.

somehow i woke up this morning and gave it another shot(so to speak) and it worked. i did nothing to change it, just went to sleep. hope yours starts working too...
i bought it partially for the camera. i didn't buy it because it was the best camera on a phone but it is up there. for in door pictures of yourself, you aren't going to be able to tell if its auto focusing correctly. that is one of the issues with the phone is in door auto focusing. you might want to use a mirror to make sure it does it correctly. the camera button is used to focus then capture. you should see the in door quality on the evo, it is the worst lol. and of course the droid x rapes the nexus one on just about everything so finding one thing the nexus one is better at is no surprise.
the galaxy s phones are a good option but they don't have a flash, so who knows how well it will do depending on how dark it is.
6mp vs 8mp
Nevermind.

Galaxy S II vs Galaxy Note

I just got my Note yesterday and spent a great deal of time with the device. I figure this might be a good place to share the experience
1. Pentile display complaints on Note is a moot point. Specially around the curved text edges, it looks like Note is noticeably sharper than the S2
2. Feel is very similar. Note is pretty much a bigger slightly quicker S2 with a larger screen/battery
3. SAMOLED HD is gorgeous
4. Sad to say this but i'm already used to the device size and S2 feels tiny every time i go back to it
5. Onscreen keyboard is easier to use due to size and spacing (it's probably the best onscreen keyboard that i've used and this includes the 10.1 and ipad)
6. S-Pen is awesome and it works much better than any other stylus that i've used including the capacitive ones

^^ lol. Its so he can see the size difference. i would like to see that too actually as im considering getting a Note next month too.
How about fluid and smoothness? as good as S2?
Is it a pain to use in one hand i.e reaching the far side of the screen? or do you need to use 2 hands?
I read somewhere on here that bigger screens dont actually mean more text on the page, its just larger text. If you load the same page in both browsers do you actually see a lot more on the page of the Note?

If the screen is bigger, but the resolution is the same (e.g. Galaxy S1 and Galaxy S2, the latter has bigger screen but same 800x480 resolutio, so the view will be the same on both, with S2 text being larger). However, the Note has higher 720p resolution, so it should fit more.
Sounds good.
I prefer big screens (100inch screen via projector in my living room lol) so i would love the Note. Im gunna pop down to city centre on the weekend and try get a bit of play time with one in the stores.
The modding scene doesnt look very big on XDA at the moment, i guess thats cos its still new though.
I needed a second phone and was about to get a Note. Then I found out it doesn't have Gorilla glass and some users have already reported it easily gets scratched. I hate screen protectors. I agree with the rest of its wonders, but no Gorilla means no phone to me.

Gorilla glass is just a brand name and samsung might be building their own fortified glass similar to nexus
Btw, gorilla glass does scratch and it all depends on what your device gets exposed to

I wish I had never bought my Note...

My reason? I have finally stopped trying to find the perfect Android phone! I have had so many over the years and was constantly looking for the perfect one. Got a GSM Galaxy Nexus last month and fell in love...until I fell out of love with ICS. Seriously if the Nexus came with Gingerbread, it would be just another phone. The camera sucks, etc.
The Note literally has everything I want in a phone. I'm finding myself sitting here enjoying it without searching incessantly for a better phone. Feels kinda strange, actually.
My wallet thanks me and I'm a happy camper. Best phone ever.

I really need to stop reading about new android devices. Makes me want to catch em all. But no worries, I love my note.. for now.
I had a try with the galaxy nexus here in the shops....i must say i was very dissapointed with it....the screen is not as vibrant plus ics is also not as good of an os as i was expecting....but maybe thats because i only played with it for about fifteen minutes..
I can honestly say, I wont be buying another device until Galaxy Note 3.
WOW! Those are some specs!
A phone with those specs will be hard to ignore! GNote is doing great for now! It really does do so many things well!
For now the Note is the best.
It has got its problems here and there.
I had problem when I transferred to many apps to Ext SD
and the phone keeps on rebooting. Can't seem to handle
the extra apps in Ext SD, don't why.
Still it is a great phone & mini Tab.
Best combination ever= GNote and Jailbroken iPhone 4.
The SIM is in my note for now, but some times I just needed that smaller form factor. Pop the SIM out of the adapter and back into my iPhone, head on out!

3d without the glasses is TERRIBLE for your eyes. You can cause serious damage if you look at it too long and if you can't do that, then why spend $700+ on it?
Ill stick with good old 2d.

Do you have a cite for this? I have never heard about it.
I tried 3D on the Evo at a store and I was quite impressed with both viewing and the camera. I expect the technology will only get better and I would be pleased if the GS3 has 3D. However I am not sure whether I would want to go back to the smaller size and lose the S-pen.
A Galaxy Note 2 with 3D, NFC and quad-core would be utterly amazing though.

Are you sure that's true? Haven't seen the news on any of the popular tech sites, the phone has a single camera but is supposed to shoot 3D?
Sorry to hear of your troubles ericshmerick.
I cannot understand why your unhappy with the camera, possibly a problem with the camera or phone itself?
As for myself I'm extremely pleased with the camera, video camera and it's results, BEST i've seen in a mobile...
Here are some samples I've taken myself with the Note, you can judge the photos yourself.
Unfortunately I've not had a chance to use the camera during the day just yet, will try and take some proper day time shots soon!

Lol, your right! However he still confused me because his title says: I wish I had never bought my Note...
Then a few lines down he says:
The Note literally has everything I want in a phone. I'm finding myself sitting here enjoying it without searching incessantly for a better phone.
Anyway here are a few more random snaps of junk in my office to show off the camera on the Note...
The snaps are nothing special, just random shots. I'm actually surprised that no one has opened a thread such as ''post your best shots. ''
Here are some random shots I just took at work:

Give me Windows on Note
I completely agree with you.
The Note has the best HW I ever has seen, except the placement of the on/off switch, which, however, is a minor disadvantage. But Android is terrible, synchronisation with Outlook is terrible, lot of apps are terrible and very badly designed or not intuitive to use. I like it as an eBook reader. The rest is a crap more or less, unusable for business.
I wished this device having Windows!!!

Major Camera Issues!

I am REALLY hoping I may just have a defective/lemon unit (as I could swap it out)... I need some testers willing to submit similar shots to see if this is actually a manufacturing defect/issue or just the unit I have currently.
My images are showing major image warp, almost like a fisheye effect but worse. Easily most noticeable when taking pictures of legible text. I have used both stock and Google camera, yielding same results. I took pictures of the Droid Turbo & my S5 boxes.
I am on Version 21.21.15.en.US for the record (latest update) in case this may have been cause by firmware/software...

I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to. I don't really see anything except slight blurring towards the middle, wouldn't call that major but I get what you mean. However, I took an image of the back of my box so you can compare it.

The majority of cameras have image distortion. Photoshop even has an option to fix it. Usually this distortion is fixed through post-processing but maybe Motorola isn't doing it, or not enough?

I hope you're kidding? Do you not see the text bending/waving all over the place? It is basically acting like there are multiple fish eyes in one picture...
I don't notice this on any other phone I own. Either a software issue or a defect with the lense or function of the sensor in the camera.

Just look at the text, not the box itself.

I think I get what you're pointing out. The text is clear where you point the focus to, but the further you move away from it, the more blurry it gets? I think that's just the way the focus is. TBH, I never even noticed it till now. Could be a software issue though.

Not even just that, the text itself is warped. It's not straight, it's all over the place. I'll edit a picture and post more specifically what I mean.
Not a problem at all. No "major" issue. Looks almost 100% fine. If you want great pictures get an actual camera. There is NOTHING major about this.
Edit: if people are having a hard time seeing your issue it's nothing to complain about.

OK. Apparently "major" is over the top... Still an issue, I don't have this problem on my other phones. At least, not noticeable like this...

i really notice the fish-eye kind of effect, but i honesty dont think its a big issue, at least not for me.

Damn, I see what you're saying, and I wish I couldn't haha. Not sure what to make of it. Did you try the updated version of the Motorola camera? I haven't taken a picture yet since updating it, but give that a shot I suppose.

I do see size differences in the text and the wavy you're speaking of. My assumption would be that when the megapixels is increased you see more of the paper not being perfectly straight or flattened so you get this affect? Idk. My guess. I don't see it as much but I just wanted to say I appreciate all the feedback on this phone as i haven't gotten one yet and am looking at people's reviews. Not trying to shoot you down.

I thought the same thing initially. Perhaps the box was not flat or the printed text itself was an issue, not the case. Which is why I took pictures of two different boxes. Same issues recurred.
I also took same pictures with my S5 and iPad 3. No similar effects. They take pictures with straight text, the tops do tend to warp a tad, but nothing in the centers. Nothing close to what my Turbo is doing.
I'm asking others to take pictures to see if it is something to do with the lens, glass, sensor, idk? I am on the latest firmware/software and all apps are up to date.
Also, it seems to provide worse results with HDR enabled. This may be software based...
can it be related to the 4:3 ratio instead of 16:9? try 15mpx mode
Hmm you could test maybe to see if it's hardware vs software. I'm thinking maybe hardware would be more likely to give a consistent distortion (I.e. in same location and to same amount), whereas a software defect may cause distortion but more randomly across various tests. Try getting grid paper and set up the phone (so its securely in place) to take pictures perpendicular from page. Then compare several pictures by examining the deviation from straight lines of the grid and see if they happen consistently in the same spots or randomly with little to no consistancy.
I would agree with the OP - that this is an issue in his phone.
A strong driver for me to upgrade from my Droid Maxx to the Turbo is the 21 mpx camera. And if that one has issues, then I stay put with what I have for now.
put a straight edge on the line of the box, third picture I think.
To the naked eye it looks bent all over the place. I lined the edge of a sheet of paper against it, and it's straight. Probably just the font and an optical illusion, some people are more sensitive to this type of perception than others.
