Disapointed with DROID X camera (photos inside) - Droid X General

The photos that come from this phone litterally sucks.. all my photos come out grainy and pixely. That is with flash on and off. Taking self pics come out even worse. Gets dark and stuff. Would not reccomend this phone for its camera.

You have to be a bit more objective than that.
I have come from an Incredible, EVO, TP2 and have seen the iphone4 pictures.
I think so far the X has better low light performance than everything aside form the iphone. You also want to make sure you have the phone set to 8MP as default it is at 6MP.
Try messing around with the ISO sensitivity, maybe on auto it is selecting too high of an ISO generating a lot of noise.
The device also does a much better job in macro shots as well than any of the other phones. We are not at point and shoot replacement category yet with any of the phones, namely because all the sensors are nothing more than small 10$ units. But they are light years better than a year ago.

I had the nexus one and the pictures that came from those were CRYSTAL clear! I loved them. Now these are all blurry and grainy. Im going to upload examples soon. As you can see none of them come out clear and all have a little grain in them

What error could it be? Everything is in auto..?

Try getting out of the house once in a while. All your pics are indoor, low low light. This is a phone, if you want an all purpose genera, buy a camera

be happy it works at all. my camera seems busted. all it does is display a black screen when opening any app controlling it. gotta take it back to get it looked at, which means a long line.

i think it's safe to say anyone who comments on this forum hasn't bought a phone specifically for the purpose of "talking on it" in quite some time.
the real question is when can they create an app that has my phone making me breakfast?

I kind of understand what the OP is saying, but he should post pics side by side of the Nexus and X.

My DroidX has the exact same problem - black screen on all camera / video apps. I tried factory reset and all, but no use. I took it back to BestBuy and they said they'd replace it once they got their next shipment in (whenever that will be).

Here is a night shot I took with my X

I agree, the camera on this phone isn't all that great, I too get better shots with my N1.
I was aware of this before I bought the phone, seeing all the pictures & videos that've been posted over the past few days, but I decided to go for the phone anyway.
If a camera is a major requirement on your phone I'd get one of the Galaxy S phones, camera is amazing on that.

somehow i woke up this morning and gave it another shot(so to speak) and it worked. i did nothing to change it, just went to sleep. hope yours starts working too...

i bought it partially for the camera. i didn't buy it because it was the best camera on a phone but it is up there. for in door pictures of yourself, you aren't going to be able to tell if its auto focusing correctly. that is one of the issues with the phone is in door auto focusing. you might want to use a mirror to make sure it does it correctly. the camera button is used to focus then capture. you should see the in door quality on the evo, it is the worst lol. and of course the droid x rapes the nexus one on just about everything so finding one thing the nexus one is better at is no surprise.
the galaxy s phones are a good option but they don't have a flash, so who knows how well it will do depending on how dark it is.

6mp vs 8mp
Nevermind.

Nexus One vs. Samsung Captivate side by side *videos-pics*

I just picked up a captivate, haven't even unboxed it yet.
I'm going to hang onto my N1, so if anyone wants to see any side by side comparisons, please ask away.
My Nexus is unlocked/rooted running CM6-RC1.
Let me know guys. This is the kind of thing I wanted to see before buying one, but no one had done it, so I just want to help others out in the name of science.

OK, here is a batch of pics I just shot. One of my homescreen (both phones setup the same with ADW launcher) Both phones are set to 50% screen brightness.
Several shots of each phone playing one of the 720p vids that came with the Galaxy S
One shot of a hi res photo taken with my camera

I would like to see a side by side comparison of the screens close up on the same picture. Engadget did this for the N1 and iPhone4 to show the difference in being able to see pixels on the screen. Just curious how good a super AMOLED screen looks up close compared to an AMOLED screen. Also, it would be nice to see the difference in the camera quality in pictures taken by the N1 vs. the Captivate.
A comparison would be great.
I'm too fed up with my Samsung Jack and couldnt wait for WP7 so I can compare it myself against Android (I really like having Outlook on my phone which is the main reason I didnt get an Android device till now).
I just ordered the Captivate. Been messing around with a friend's N1 running Froyo and its pretty damn good, so I guess i'd like to see how the two stack up, especially given that Captivate still runs 2.1 and ATT sucks at upgrading in a timely manner.
I would like too see a screen comparison, camera and build quaility. Thanks..
I would love to see some side by side shots etc. Especially the performance of the camera against the Nexus one's.
More importantly I would like to see the OP updated instead of having to scroll through the thread .
Thanks in advance!
What's with the misleading thread title...either you have the photos and did a side by side, or this is all just a big waste of a thread...phail.

I'm not just gonna do some huge review based on my opinion that no one would give a crap about, that's stupid. The purpose of this thread was to see if there was anything specific that someone would want to see.
I'm not gonna get into any opinion based stuff, like build quality. Pictures and video make it easy for people to make their own decisions.
Tomorrow I'll take some shots with each phone and put them up, then put a couple hi res photos on each and take a pic side by side.

I haven't done much with the Captivate today other than what I'm doing for this thread, so its hard to say.
A couple of things, the screen is awesome. I hate to say this, but it feels faster than my N1. Just has a snappier feel. Its killing the N1 on web page loading times.
Not having a trackball to wake the phone up is killing me. Not being able to sideload apk's without using adb is really getting old too. Of course I couldn't use Titanium backup to redo all my apps+data, so thats a *huge* set back.
Added photos....
Did you get the Tmobile version or the AT&T version? I like the Tmobile version better. AT&T likes to **** around with physical specs and styles.
Unfortunately I just bought my Nexus on contract with Tmobile, so no new phones for a while (which doesn't bother me).
Regardless I would like some side by side pics of thickness and screen size. Supposedly Froyo was going to be available in August to all of the Galaxy 2's. I don't know how the carriers are going to handle it but thats what I read.
Also I think while the Samsung looks brighter (semi-negative) I think it has better contrast with the colors. The Nexus 1 looks a tad washed out. Nothing major though. It could also be the auto light sensor as well.
Both phones are look great. I would probably be really on the fence about the N1 or Samsung if I was in the market and had neither. Lots of my friends are looking at Android and I am referring them to the Samsung just because of the new processor and high specs on the major carriers (AT&T mostly).
I think if the Galaxy is popular enough, we may see a large community fan base that is able to root and support custom roms and tweaks. Because I like to tinker it would be a hard decision right now to buy the Samsung until a few months when we learn more about the bootloader and ease of roms.
If the Samsung was able to be opened up like the Nexus, it would be a no brainer purchase. With limited knowledge about the Sammy right now I think I would wait to see how it shapes up or get the Nexus if you couldn't wait. Or buy both like the OP!
Update, just added a video to the top post, showing some speed tests. Sorry for the crappy quality, I have a decently old cam.
Also, just copied an Xvid avi file right to the phone, it plays great. I also got speeds around 6-8MB/second while copying, which trumps the N1's 2MB speed.

Consistent blurry pictures with flash *big picture warning*

I can actually say I haven't been able to take 1 clear picture with flash. Is there something wrong with my phone? I have a fairly steady hand, I used to be a DSLR photographer and never had any problems. What gives to this? here are some examples, not even a moving object. These pictures are taken stabilized on my knee

R.I.P., Left Shift key.
As a rule, indoor pictures with the Evo are just poor quality. Outside, they're crystal clear, but even with the flash, when you're inside the camera is adjusting the exposure to the ambient light, which means grainy, blurry pics. There are some tweaks you can do to minimize this (white balance, exposure defaults, etc.) but in general it's just not that great.
Same with video: If you're inside, the camcorder drops down to, like, 8-10fps capture. Outside it does much better. It's all about the ambient lighting.
the lighting looks bad, and plus you gotta click in the pic to focus it and then hold down the shutter button untill you see your pic, thats the only way i can take pics

i cant beleive, or i missed, no one pointing this out.
you are friggin shaking in the picture dude.
no picture will look good when there is movement.
but i side with you, my camera compared to my wifes camera is garbage.
my wifes takes consistantly better video and stills than mine does.
mine will show the camera focusing and all it does is focus near then far, then stops, it never stops on the right focus point, you can see where it focuses right on past it.
if there was a hack to allow a slider for focus that would be kick ass.
after some time and practice it would be easy to use the slider for focus.
but my shots such ass, big time.
if i Zoom in it will focus much better than if it isnt.
so i am not sure where the focus point is compared to where you place your finger but it isnt where you place your finger thats for sure.
It sounds like a problem my phone seemed to have in the beginning; it would focus and then stop auto focus a little blurry. I don't know what fixed it, but after I had the phone a few weeks, the issue seemed to go away. Now I can take pretty clear and amazingly focused photos.
As for the iPhone troll, I ignored him as I was on a website viewing some flash content on my phone just after I got done with a video conference on 3G . I then made a phone call and held the phone with both hands without dropping the call.

The first time I saw a couple night mode pics i couldnt believe it.
most of them look BETTER than a camera with flash.
It really is quite good. 10x better than any other phone i've used in the dark.
And on every one of the above shots, a camera flash would have horribly blown out the images and made them unusable.
Ok, where's the setting for THAT?
Nevermind - found it.

Unless you are talking picture in a small room, the LED flash on most phones are pretty useless. Night mode FTW.
Do you know what would be even more amazing? A flash WITH night mode, ala samsung epic 4g. It really pisses all over the rest of the galaxy s lineup. If that bad boy releases with no gps issues, good bye vibrant and dual-bootin hd2, helloooo sprint!

The effective distance of a camera flash (even the standard one on an SLR) is up to about 15 feet. On a cell phone camera, it's closer to 5 feet. Most of the pictures above (particularly the beautiful one of the tower) wouldn't look any better with any kind of flash. If anything, they may actually look worse, since the camera would lower the ISO or increase the shutter speed since it'd be expecting the light to reflect off the subject, underexposing your photos.
I would have to check this out myself, but knowing digital cameras, the night mode likely works simply by increasing the ISO. Unfortunately, for most lower end cameras this means that the quality of the picture drops (in some case dramatically) and the pictures become very grainy. If my Canon powershot sucks at this, I'd be surprised for a cell camera to be any better. But at least you'll get some sort of a picture.

You know what's the best thing about a camera flash? You can turn it off. So you don't have to use it in those pictures where it wouldn't help, like landscape and distance shots. Don't take the apple route and just say "oh I don't need it" because it's not included. Think of how nice it would be to take a photo in pitch blackness of a subject 8-10 feet away with camera flash AND night mode. With the right software post-processing, it'd be as clear as the middle of the day!

Which app did you use to get the tilt-shift look?
don't sell your DSLR...unless you use Nikon and you want to sell me something cheap
I did the tilt shift in Photoshop because no app really gives me the control I want.
Vignette does a decent job for a generic tilt shift focus and Photoshop Express can modify the colors moderately well to finish it off.
I still prefer doing it manually.

The camera on this phone is great and I really like my phone. But replacing a DSLR with a 5 mpx with a cmos sensor like 10 times smaller is not something I would recommend. But hey, it's your camera right If quality is not your primary concern then why not? As far as quality is concerned, I don't think ill see the sensor in a phone get up to a APSC size anytime soon. Don't misunderstand me, im in no way undermining your decision to do so. Just laying it out straight. I have the Pentax K-x DSLR and the difference in detail is literally night and day. Btw, I love your post processing dude. Great job. Tiltshift is awesome.

There is no wrong or right way to use a DSLR. Can you fit a 10 lbs setup in your pocket? No?

There is when you have a 2yr old and a 5 yr old. My sammy takes fine pictures of stuff to sell on craiglist, but no matter how you configure it, my kids look like flash gordon.

Your joking right? This is a great little cam for a cell phone, but not even close to dslr quality.

Compactness and portability is more important to me now then quality. I have a few L series lenses that I've already sold off. I don't want lug my 20lb setup with me everywhere I go anymore. Something that fits in my pocket is much more desirable (and cheaper).

[LIGHTS!★CAMERA!★ACTION!] Post your money shot taken with the S6 Edge.

Let the games begin....
Funny story: "I was showing my buddy who is a photographer some pictures on my iMac of some shots I took with my Note 4. As we were going through them I kept saying, my Canon 70D is amazing isn't it? It was hilarious seeing him agree with me. After we've gone through all the pics, I said, "Not bad for a phone eh?." - You should have seen the look on his face ROLF." Classic....
Well....now it's hard to imagine that we have something even better on the S6(E) .... this camera is amazing.... The days of point and shoots are officially gone. DONE. I felt this way even back with the Note 3, but now.....game over.

Hey can you do me a favour and download the manual camera app on the play store to see If you can get long exposure shots with the new camera apk. I've got this phone in pre order and this is the only question I'm curious about. Also what's the longest exposure the app allows? And can you try taking some raw shots to?. Btw that food looks so good I'm hungry lol

Hey there, is there a specific app in the playstore that you want me to download to check? With the S6(E) having an aperture of F1.9, 28mm focal length and a 1/2.6" sensor.....it's the best in class....I'd be interested in getting the exposure info for you as I too am curious.....
Havn't eaten since yesterday at 6pm, and you post food...
Jerk

Hey there...it's a paid app eh? I don't mind buying it, but thought I'd confirm with you (as a previous user) if this camera app is the best manual camera app you've found? If so I'll get it no worries....small change, it's nothing....I'm just very particular with apps and keep my set up very tight with apps that I only need.
looks like it is , dont bother ill test it when i get my unit in a few weeks , thanks anyways

All good. I'm interested in that camera though...hmmm...having full out manual functions is pretty awesome.
Does the S6 have voice activated shutter? I've been an HTC person and enjoy the feature so curious if Samsung implemented this as well

Easier said than done.
With that said, he probably doesn't know there's an ignore feature. So Brava, look through your user CP and you should find it, and it should block unlock's posts. I think.
first test of camera caught in traffic
I was previously jealous of the Note 4 Photo Quality when I tried one.
Now I am very interested in the S6 due to even lower noise .
Looks like the pics from these also look really good even on a Monitor at 13" or 15" screen ?
I need to be able to take pics that will be viewed often on a Computer sent uncompressed in Gmail and still look clear and not turn to mush or photocopier look.
Is S6 at this point ?

Hi,
You can actual install the following free application which will check whether the paid app is supported:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.vipek.camera2_compatibility_test
Do you mind posting the results you get in case you install it ? Thanks !

Definitely. The start of amazingness was with the Note 3. Then it got better with the Note 4 which held the throne until now....but don't get me wrong, the Note 4's camera is fantastic and in most shots with a lot of lighting (outdoor) it'd be hard to tell the difference from a Note 4 and S6(E).
There's nothing to worry about with quality. We're talking the best here.
