Unlimited WiFi Tethering - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 General

I've seen a few threads in the Q&A about this topic, so I'll just make a dedicated thread for it so other sections don't get too clouded.
**This will only work if you have an unlimited data plan!**
**MUST ALSO HAVE ROOT ACCESS**
This will essentially re-route the output of data so it is not taking off of your Tethering plan, instead taking off of your main data plan.
That being said, if you do this method and you have a 5GB main data plan, don't come to this thread saying it didn't work for you.
*****
Get an app on the Play Store called WiFi Tether Router:
http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter
MUST HAVE LATEST VERSION OF THE APP (v4.0.6 OR NEWER)
*****
Keep "Always scanning" checked. Don't do what the dialog says and uncheck it.
*****
Configure it and go down towards the bottom and hit "APN Settings". In there you will see your main APN that is used (fast.t-mobile.com).
You're going to have to make a brand new one with all of the details identical to the original, but where it says "APN Protocol", change that from ipv6 to ipv4. This step is essential to making the tethering data come off of your main data plan so you can truly use your unlimited data to your heart's content.
Whenever you make a new APN, the Protocols are usually already at IPV4. If they are already IPV4, you are good to go.
This has been working for me with no problems for the past few days. I've used about 20GB so far in tethering alone.
If I helped, hit that thanks button.

Might want to add that this requires root just in case someone jumps the gun and buys the app without reading the app description.

I'm currently using Dirty Tethered Mod from the S4 T-Mobile thread and been working fine .... I have used at least 200GB with no problem ...

Wifi Tether Router is the only method that works for me.
I have tried the Dirty Tether Mod from the S4 forum and I can not get it to use my unlimited data and stop using my tether data. I have spent a lot time reading and trying to use this method. Not sure what I am doing wrong.
JUSMEJOSE, is it possible for you the stat a thread and explain exactly what needs to be done to get the Dirty Tether Mod from the S4 forum working?

I just noticed that mine is set to IPv6 for APN Protocol and IPv4 for APN Roaming Protocol.
So my Roaming is already set to IPv4....should I change something? should the APN Protocol be IPv4 as well?

I have IPv4 set for both APN Protocol and for APN Roaming Protocol and Wifi Tether Router is working how it should.

OP updated with info and video tutorial.

FYI also , don't use Internet Explorer in windows while tethered as t-mobile does check headers every so often. I'm not really sure if tmobile actually cares about the few who do unrestrict tether as the tmobile rep is the one who also showed me this method in op and about ie usage

Did you uncheck the option "always allow scanning" in the advanced settings? If you dont, it won't work.

Unchecked always scan, APN SETUP, AND UNLIMITED DATA PLAN

Same here. Not broadcasting where any of my pc's can see it.
did you run native tethering once or something? maybe that's the difference?

I also had to enable:
AUTO disconnect WIfi when start tethering. seems to relate to no disable wifi. If that's ON, it wont switch to LTE tethering.
so with those 3 checked, I was able to tether and verified website access.
Have NOT checked tmob site to be sure tho.

When I run the speedtest.net app on my phone T-mobile note 4 and my tethered Galaxy Tab S using the native T-mobile tethering app I constantly get simular DL 50+ Mbps & UL 14+ Mbps speeds. When I use the WiFi Tether Router app my DL speed on my tethered Galaxy Tab S is constantly sufficiently slower and average DL 10 Mbps & UL 5 Mbps. Since using the WiFi Tether Router app my DL speed has never been faster the 20 Mbps on my test.
Anyone know why I get much better speeds using the T-mobile native tethering app?

Tmobile unofficial tethering

So I think I got free tethering to work on my MG with tmobile $30 prepaid plan by changing the APN, but not 100% sure if I got the process down correctly since I've been tinkering, rooted and still on 4.3.
Anyways, maybe you guys can give a try and see if it works. This is aimed towards t-mobile users who don't have hotspot as part of their plan or have already exhausted their monthy tethering limit.
steps:
- go to settings > More....> mobile networks > Access Point names
- add a new APN by hitting the "+" sign
- Set "Name" to what ever you'd like (e.g. Hotspot4life)
- Set "APN" to fast.t-mobile.com
- Set "APN protocol" to IPv4/IPv6 or IPv4
- Leave everything else untouched
- hit menu button then select save
- Select the APN just created.
- Active native tethering (assuming you've adjusted ID and password already to your liking)
- If it works, go back into settings and select old APN... and check if tethering has been blocked.
Note: there's no need to reboot when switching APNs.
If it doesn't work, then a file change I did beforehand while rooted made a difference or something else was a factor.

t mobile and Three use Packet Sniffing to check the file headers to detect tethering. If you tether an iOS device or an OSX device to your phone, often they will not get flagged and the tethering will work. If you use a Windows PC or other device it will be detected immediately. I mention this, as it could be a factor if you tried tethering with an ipad or something and got it to work. Messing with the APN on Three has no effect, so I'd be surprised if it works with T Mobile.
Thanks for the tip! I found that this works, but unreliably on my Moto G.
I just got a MG last week and was frustrated to find tethering would not work at all out of the box. I stumbled across your post and made the changes you recommended and it worked very well at first - for maybe15 minutes or so. Then I noticed my Chromebook lost connection and upon further diagnosis it was the Moto G that lost connection to the T-Mobile network. I tried to turn of tethering, but that didn't help and I finally had to reboot the phone to get it back on the network. I switched back to the default APN and the phone worked reliably again, but obviously not tethering. In the past couple days I've tried the new APN with your settings a few times and get similar results - it works for a while, but then the phone loses cell connectivity. I've since found that I toggling Airplane Mode on and off will restart the cell connection and tethering will also start working again, so it kind of works but not as well as it should.
I've been doing more searching regarding the fast.t-mobile.com APN and other threads seem to indicate that APN is specifically for LTE phones. Since the Moto G doesn't have an LTE chip, I wonder if that's causing the reliability problem?

PS - I think there might be a typo in your instructions and fast.t-tmobile.com should be fast.t-mobile.com - with just 1 t in the t-mobile. Thanks again!

You're right. I've fixed it. Thanks.
I rarely tether, so I haven't used it in every scenario. But when I do tether, its while tethering to my tablet, my friend's phone, or desktop/laptop WITH user agent switcher on Chrome to mask the desktop/laptop as a mobile device. After reading your post, I tethered to my laptop for an hour and did not encounter any issues. Do you lose connectivity even when the phone's signal strength is strong? Have you tried tethering to a different device (mobile)?
Thanks for the follow up. I've been trying it again today from my home where I get better cellular signal strength, but I'm getting similar results. It connects up and runs for 15-30 minutes and then starts flaking out. After rebooting both the phone and Chromebook, the Chromebook kept trying to go to a T-Mobile sign-in page, but couldn't even load that. And I too am using a Chrome extension to change the user agent to Android. The Moto G seems to be working fine and not losing it's connection this time.
I have also been able to test tethering on a Nexus 4 running Android 4.4.2 today and the Chromebook is connecting just fine and staying connected - no problems at all. I compared the APN settings between the 2 phones and the Nexus has the MMSC entry filled out (which xda won't allow me to post here because i'm too new), so I added that into the Moto G, but it did not help. Darn. I really like the Moto G, but really need reliable tethering. Thanks again...

You need install a User Agent String changer addon in your browser and change the string.
I use this one: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...r-c/djflhoibgkdhkhhcedjiklpkjnoahfmg?hl=en-US
I have instructions for another device here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201062
Good luck.
Thanks for the recommendation! Sorry I didn't make it more clear in my reply above, but I am using a user agent switcher - currently the Ultimate User Agent Switcher. Just to be sure, I disabled that extension and installed the User-Agent Switcher for Chrome that you linked to, but unfortunately I'm getting the same result - the Chromebook takes forever and keeps trying to connect to the "Welcome to T-Mobile" page.
And I tried again with the Nexus 4 and the Chromebook connects up immediately and runs great - no T-Mobile page or any other problems. I did a little more research and found a post on the Nexus 4 forum recommending disabling IPV6 in the APN Protocol, so I switched both phones from IPV6/IPV4 to just IPV4 and am getting the same result on each. Both phones work fine on the cell network and Internet, but the Chromebook only tethers successfully to the Nexus 4.

You need to set the Firefox string in my thread. That is the only desktop browser string that works. The reason why Chromebook/Ipad/Ipod devices work is because T-Mobile allows those devices since they can all have Cellular radios in them for radio. It would block legit paying customers.
Hey - thanks for the quick follow up!
Unfortunately, I just tried all 3 of the Firefox settings in the user agent switcher and rebooted the Chromebook each time, but no joy - each time after restarting and connecting to the Moto G wi-fi hotspot the Chromebook just tries to redirect me to the T-Mobile site.

Do you have the T-Mobile branded Moto G? If so you may need to disable the upsell app as I did in my L9 thread. You may also need to edit /etc/apns-conf.xml
Also, use this app instead of the builtin tethering. It may be notifying the carrier of tethering.
https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Thanks again for more suggestions.
I am using an unlocked US GSM model of Moto G I purchased from Amazon.
I have not rooted yet, but may try that and the tethering app you linked to. I'm wondering if the stock app included on the Motorola device is the culprit, whereas the stock tethering app on the Nexus device may not be reporting back...

MetroPCS (T-Mobile) Tethering Issue

Is anyone else having tethering issues on MetroPCS or Tmobile with the MXP? I have tried applying various apn tweaks but I always experience DNS issues on the tethered devices. My device is bootloader unlocked and rooted if that even matters.

I am in the same situation and it sucks not being able to tether on metroPCS specially since my service plan of $60 offers free mobile hotspot up to 6GB to teher. The phone has potential but in the end I might have to return it if no tethering options are available.

Have you tried going to the store to get their information on this? I'm about to get this phone on t-mobile amd I hope this can be fixed, did you buy the phone at motorolas site? Because I seen the option to add your carrier sim with the phone if that even makes a difference as im assuming it doesn't, but maybe it has something to do with the imei not being registered to the network so I think you should stop by a store
I have not had any issues tethering with T-Mobile. Not rooted and bootloader is virgin locked.

Are you getting an error when turning on Hotspot, or just when a device connects it cant hit the internet. Its 2 different issues, but both are fixable.

Had to dig deep in the adb logcat to find the issue, the problem is DNS routing when using tethering . For tethering to work I had to use Wifi Tether Router.
Change the following for tethering to work:
Interface: wlan0
Method: Native tether
DHCP Settings : DNS Redirect checked
Redirect DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4

Also you may need to change your APN to use IPv4 and not IPv6.
The issue is the hidden tethering APN. T-Mobile is the only one that does this that I know of.

No problem man. Can you let me know if your tether data is showing up in your data usage. Mine doesnt show up at all , maybe since its bypassing tmobile's DNS servers.
In case this helps any Metro PCS (who else does Hotspot for free?? Nice). I was so upset that I couldn't hotspot that I rooted and tried the WiFi Tether Router app and settings above (had used before on Sprint with success). Nothing worked.. I uninstalled and tried a few simpler things: I just modified the APN by adding 'dun' to the APN type line, and changed APN protocol to IPv4. Works great at LTE speeds. I don't think using then deleting WiFi Tether Router left some beneficial settings somewhere deeper; anyone know?
I have the same issue. A reboot fixes it for a short time only. I posted this on Moto forum and other people have having an issue. I know it's the phone because I put the sim back to my OPO and I can tether fine with it. I call t-mobile to verify that Hotspot feature is turn on. It's very annoying having to reboot again and again to use hotspot.
MetroPCS blocks ALL tethering for non-MetroPCS devices. That said, I have been tethering with MetroPCS since Day 1 using this guide:
http://pocketnow.com/2015/01/01/nexus-6-tethering
Summary:
Add tether_dun_required=0 to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db using a SQL Editor.
Change APN to IPv4

same problem here,i use simple mobile and computer connect to wifi but data is not transfering,i found that happens when lte when i have h+ or 2g tether ok...anybody know how to fix this ,i have no problem with asus zenfone 2
with 3 different roms, all I've needed to get fast LTE tethering is basically using IPv4 and adding 'dun'...
(all others "Not set")...
APN: fast.metropcs.com
MMSC: http://metropcs.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
MMC: 310
MNC: 260
APN type: default,supl,mms,dun
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4

Unlimited MetroPCS/T-Mobile Tether Settings.

First off I do believe you have to have unlimited data or use a VPN App to bypass your usage restrictions. Both companies have been unlawfully cracking down on data usage and overcharging our "unlimited" plans. So, without further ado this is how I have come of maintaining true unlimited tether usage!
Here is everything I have configure thus far with MetroPCS/T-Mobile that works 35/35 Mbps.
APN Settings:
APN-fast.metropcs.com
MMSC-http://metropcs.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
MCC-310
MNC-260
APN Type-default,supl,mms,dun
APN Protocol-IPv6
APN Roaming Protocol-IPv6
Wifi Tether Router Settings:
Interface-wlan0 (or whatever your config that works)
Method-Native Tether
Check ON Keep Screen ON / Prevent Stand By / Nat Policy Alternative / Reset Default Route
Wifi Tether Router DHCP Settings:
IP Address-172.16.11.0
DNS 1-8.8.8.8
DNS 2-8.8.4.4
Next, I use Free Tethering Unlocker
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2439424
Okay, so I've realized other methods have stopped working. The only method I have consistently work is the "Native Tether" option I explained previously. If the "Free Wifi Tether Unlocker" doesn't seem to help I suggest you use SQLite to modify the file: /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db, find wifi_tether_dun, click on it and change the value from 1 to 0 (some brands use "tether_entitlement_check_state" or other names, just remember the default value before you change to 0. Good luck!
SQL Table
Looking for the Tether* field in the sqlite file. I have searched manually, but cannot find it. Would you happen to know what table it is in? I looked for anything that might be related to tether but only found is_phone_provisioned.
Also FYI the link tether unlocker is 404.

my apologies, you don't necessarily need to edit the SQL database if you use the Free Tether Unlocker; supposedly it will do it for you. I guess the XDA link is 404'd but it can still be found on the Play Store located here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.kernelxp.freetether&hl=en

I suggest rebooting your phone after you make the suggested changes, then activate the hotspot. If you could possibly tell me the error as well. While in windows left click on your wifi icon in the taskbar, then right click your connection and click "status" and then "details", from there take a screenshot of your settings so I can verify it looks correct.
I will do and get back with you. Thanks for the help. I have my own way of getting Wifi Tether to work as a hotspot but it makes my phone hot as hell and sometimes I feel like I should just get better speeds. The normal hotspot don't heat my phone like this.

I have followed your step minus the sql as i cannot find the table. I do not know to what extent it works but it does work for me to some extent. Hulu.com wasnt loading much but since I have windows 10 I downloaded the hulu app and it is streaming fine for me.
This is the result that I got from speedtest I do not know how good or bad this is compared to my regular tethering.
Cant post url will find an alternative
Two problems that I have encountered is one that it displays the setting set through my regular hotspot not throught the wifi tether app so I do not know if I am just using regular tethering or what also i do know that I exceeded my 8gb limit. Also I experienced the wifi going out and I would need to restart it through the app I havent configured if it works also just by re enabling the wifi in settings. I also do not know if it may be because of my screen going off.
I also changed the setting from wan0 to auto.
Some sites such as google loads extremly fast and other load slow may be the content such as flash or something I heard it could be flash I do not know if hulu runs of flash.
Thanks hopefully it works fine , I just do not know if the speeds for the test are good or not. Would the speed be better through usb? Please inform me and if so how would this work would it be through PDANet? As i tried and would not get a connection.

please remove the space before net also I have not experienced the wifi timing out for the past hour with the screen on. I also changed the time out from inactivity from 10 to forever.

It is possible you need to alter your DNS settings. In the Wifi Tether Router settings go to DHCP settings and make sure your DNS is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, in my APN settings I have them both regular and roaming type set to IPv6

Sometimes if you have a RAM cleaner app it will kill the process, especially if you have an unpaid for apk as well, Fabio has his app secure when it comes to piracy so I do suggest you buy it if you haven't already. It updates almost every other day and if you're outdated for some reason it will crash quite a bit.

Still unsure as to what the issue may be, if you could give me your make and model of phone as well as what carrier you use I'll have a look into it!
I am Mad!!!
What??????? I cant believe that!!!
ok so I actually already have hotspot working,I'm just curious if this can allow me to get possibly faster and more Internet on my phone,as currently I only get 8gb of high speed hotspot available, after the 8gb it acts like 2g speeds :/

Do anyone know how i can bypass my tether on lg k7.. I just got the unlimited plan 2day please help

Good luck!

After changing apn as you instructed get the new foxfi. When you turn on hotspot click the 3 little dots and turn on proxy server...works great, still shows that small amount of tether is used, just to get connected(only like 15mb) once multiple proxy start can use many gb before even getting 100mb.
I have a iPhone will it work for iPhone.Im trying to play update a game but it takes long since I have used all my hotspot with my 60$ plan.

[HOW TO] Bypass Hotspot 600k Throttle

How to bypass hotspot Throttle Confirmed working. Update 12/19/2017
For anyone wanting to use Unlimited data on a PC or Laptop "because we the people shall take BACK control of net Neutrality by Force"
1. Download your favorite VPN. Make sure it has a RELIABLE network Lock. (Vypevpn, ExpressVPN seem to work)
2. Go to regedit, and change default TTL to 65. (google this)
3. Disable IPV6 on wifi adaptor.
4. Reboot PC.
5. Reset hotspot, reconnect, then enjoy "true unlimited" on America's Largest throttled network.
For those that have a rooted Android tablet or other device: (vpn isn't required.)
1. Change TTL to 65
2. Disable IPv6 on lan0 interface (most devices).
Side note: You must setup network lock in VPN and have it enabled at all times, and you must not use any data/internet without vpn otherwise Verizon may detect the connected PC as tethering. If this happens, disable/re-enable wifi adapter or hotspot and retry. You may need to reset hotspot after install and setup of VPN. You can reset either the hotspot or the adaptor both seem to work.
If this has worked for you please consider liking this, and sharing it. Post any questions in the thread and Ill assist.
It seems you have to have all these going, as Verizon is using a variety of DPI, to detect tethering. They are inspecting TTL hops, sniffing packets, as well as checking browser headers and ip's being accessed. This is why these methods of hiding tether usage is required. Verizon is also throttling Instagram, and a few other non video streaming sites i have discovered.
Now to add, I recommend if you are actually gaming, and VPN performance is bad, feel free to disconnect the vpn and make sure the internet is set as metered connection in Win 10. Although the Throttle will kick in, your latency will be low and your gaming will likely be better, as gaming typically little bandwidth. If you are downloading huge patches, torrenting, netflix etc. then use the throttle bypass method.
I will post a youtube video soon on how to bypass. It seems any VPN that has a fallback network lock works fine.
*Verizon has been confirmed to block: Samsung Cloud
*Verizon has been confirmed to throttle: Netflix, Youtube, Instagram.
Update. I figured out how to bypass it. They are tracking hotspot by TTL. I will upload a guide on how to fix it to bypass TTL.

I don't think they only track it using TTL, though I wish it were that easy. They utilize multiple methods for detection, including a type of deep packet analysis. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on this though, as in, where you planned on taking this in order to bypass TTL detection. I've been working on a little project myself, though it's still a cluster of theoretical data I have compiled and a few scripts written in hopes of bypassing throttles.
Hi, it seems like the 600k throttling is intermittent. I changed my ttl to 65 on pc and it seemed to have worked, now I'm slowed again. I also noticed that the throttling only happens after a couple of minutes after a device connects to my hotspot, not immediately. I saw this when streaming YouTube on a tablet. I am thinking it's not at the device level, and there is something other than ttl or even packet inspection.

No, that's the deep packet inspection doing it's job. Do you happen to be rooted? If so, you can add net.tethering.noprovisioning=true to your build.prop, which may or may not help. If I recall, you may be able to add it using adb without root as well.
There is another way that it may work, but it's far more complex. It requires you running an ssh server and a vpn, I haven't tinkered with it myself, but I'm familiar with networking and quite certain this would be the way to go if you're up to the challenge. I recall a few people on reddit discussing it (maybe in the r/hacking sub?), if you wanted to look around on how to accomplish this. I'm on mobile or I'd find some links for ya, but depending on how tech savvy you are, it's not too complicated (though it's much easier to accomplish on a linux distro).
Good luck and let me know if you figure anything out!

Im interested in this as well. It has killed my internet usage at home. Please update us with a way to bypass this.
Ok guys so far I have a temporary working solution on Verizon wireless. I am unsure how long it will last. I am running airvpn over port 2048 udp no ssl or shh. With a ttl of 65 in windows Registry. It seems almost as if they are checking if multiple devices are hitting the same IP. I have been running YouTube full 1080 on throttled hotspot for an hour. It seems that they are doing deep packet inspection on their end because my device is not rooted and unlocked stock s8+.
If anyone can try the same setup (make sure your VPN is running on a different port,) I will probably get a router to host VPN on. Even better would be if it were possible to funnel all VPN traffic including hotspot through the same tunnel on Android.
Edit confirmed working hotspot unthrottled on port 2018.
Time to get the word out. I'm going to post a guide soon.

I wonder if this method works for tmobile.
I'm not sure about hotspot, the TTL hack seems to be hit or miss, but I have been bypassing throttle on tether with FoxFi. I know, I know, people have said it doesn't work on Nougat, well I tried it anyway and have unthrottled speeds, using QH3 unlocked stock firmware and Windows 10.

Okay, so I found a way to bypass the throttle (sort of) on my home PC. I purchased samsung dex, and connected my monitor and sound system. Now i can Netflix, surf, trade and download all I want. Not a total solution, but for now, its pretty usable (except for gaming). F U Verizon and all USA carriers.

Because, its not tethering. Its the actual phone running the Monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers. The new generation of Computing baby.

I figured it out...sorta. USB tether via PDANET registered so not crippled to PC. That connection is 'shared' with the normal LAN. That cable is moved to the 'Internet' port on my router so it can feed other devices. So the PC is the middleman here so to speak.
** No throttling!
Cons...
**PC must be running
** charging only from USB cable so unable to use my QuickCharger 3.0

Can you explain this to someone who is computer literate, but completely phone/networking illiterate? For example, I'm not sure what you mean by "via PDANET registered." I've never tethered before either, but I've seen that as an option when I plug USB into my computer, so I think I can figure that out at least.
I'm stuck in a hotel for a month for training for my work and the hotel internet is awful (only .2 down) so I decided to pay up for Verizon's unlimited data plan and hotspot it, but now I've hit the ridiculous 600k throttle.
For the record, I have with me my laptop running Windows 10, and my phone is a Samsung Galaxy S6 (purchased at a Verizon store).
The worst part is I was really hoping for an ethernet port in this hotel room but there isn't one unfortunately.
Edit: Just realized this is under Galaxy S8+... My mistake, I found this thread via a google search. Not sure if you can help me or not since my phones an S6, but would still appreciate any and all help.

Bypass Verizon throttling after reaching 15GB hotspot limit [Root/VPN Required]

Hello everyone, this is for customers on the ULD plan with 15GB of hotspot. I tried a lot of different methods and I would like to share a method that is working for the Pixel 2 xl on Android 8.0.0! I want to give credit to @hydrofarmer for posting the method in a different forum. This method is a little different as I could not get FoxFi Wi-Fi hotspot to work on my phone, possibly due to Oreo.
Requirements:
1. Root Phone
2. Edit build.prop; place net.tethering.noprovisioning=true at the bottom
3. Install VPN Tether from play store.
Bypass Method:
1. Start VPN. (I use IPVanish)
2. Start Wi-Fi hotspot
3. Open VPN Tether (Grant root access and start)
4. Connect device to Phone
You will not get throttled using WiFi hotspot anymore. I hope this is useful to others. It helped me out so much, my Wi-Fi hotspot was useless at the speeds Verizon throttled me to. Again thank you @hydrofarmer!

Does this method really work? Trying it but seems like usage is still tallied up on hotspot use when reviewing account...or you can still use unthrottled speed somehow even after 15gig using this method?
This method technically works. It bypasses Verizon seeing your phone using data as a hotspot, so you are in term using part of your 22GB then de-prioritization instead

Could you check to see from your Verizon account to see if the counter for hotspot use is going up? Because I'm using this exact method (double/triple checked everything in build.prop, confirmed the devices tethering are sharing the VPN tunnel by running a location trace etc) and I see the hotspot usage still go up accordingly....or does this method somehow bypass the actual throttling even if the hotspot use is over 15 gig?

I don't even think you need to edit the prop. I think it should just work with a VPN and th VPN tether app. That's all I use on a note 4.

To be clear on this from my first post about all of this*** at first I did some extra steps as listed above. But after factory resetting my phone and starting from scratch it worked with the native hotspot app. Then I just turned on my VPN and then activated VPN tether and it works for me.

Sorry took so long to get back to you. All data is being registered as regular data. Tested it and it shows I have used 0 hotspot data. I downloaded like 4GB and it all registered as regular phone usage.

I'm still testing but something weird is happening...seems like this technique works with a computer but hit and miss connecting other Android devices. Will report back after more testing.
I just noticed that the new Verizon Data Usage page does not show the mobile hotspot data usage for the current month.... Anyone else can confirm? https://imgur.com/a/4ujKm

Has anyone tried this method and been successful on Oreo 8.1? I flashed the factory image of 8.1 and setup my phone the way i had it working before. I tried to wifi tether, but when i try to go to a website other than google i get a DNS error. I don't get that error with VPN tether app off. Any thoughts?
Found a fix for the issue I was running into. In settings/System/Developer options make sure Tethering hardware accelerations is turned off. For VPN settings I use port 443 and OpenVPN (UDP). Data does not count towards hotspot anymore. Everything is now working great!
