Tmobile unofficial tethering - Moto G General

So I think I got free tethering to work on my MG with tmobile $30 prepaid plan by changing the APN, but not 100% sure if I got the process down correctly since I've been tinkering, rooted and still on 4.3.
Anyways, maybe you guys can give a try and see if it works. This is aimed towards t-mobile users who don't have hotspot as part of their plan or have already exhausted their monthy tethering limit.
steps:
- go to settings > More....> mobile networks > Access Point names
- add a new APN by hitting the "+" sign
- Set "Name" to what ever you'd like (e.g. Hotspot4life)
- Set "APN" to fast.t-mobile.com
- Set "APN protocol" to IPv4/IPv6 or IPv4
- Leave everything else untouched
- hit menu button then select save
- Select the APN just created.
- Active native tethering (assuming you've adjusted ID and password already to your liking)
- If it works, go back into settings and select old APN... and check if tethering has been blocked.
Note: there's no need to reboot when switching APNs.
If it doesn't work, then a file change I did beforehand while rooted made a difference or something else was a factor.

t mobile and Three use Packet Sniffing to check the file headers to detect tethering. If you tether an iOS device or an OSX device to your phone, often they will not get flagged and the tethering will work. If you use a Windows PC or other device it will be detected immediately. I mention this, as it could be a factor if you tried tethering with an ipad or something and got it to work. Messing with the APN on Three has no effect, so I'd be surprised if it works with T Mobile.

Thanks for the tip! I found that this works, but unreliably on my Moto G.
I just got a MG last week and was frustrated to find tethering would not work at all out of the box. I stumbled across your post and made the changes you recommended and it worked very well at first - for maybe15 minutes or so. Then I noticed my Chromebook lost connection and upon further diagnosis it was the Moto G that lost connection to the T-Mobile network. I tried to turn of tethering, but that didn't help and I finally had to reboot the phone to get it back on the network. I switched back to the default APN and the phone worked reliably again, but obviously not tethering. In the past couple days I've tried the new APN with your settings a few times and get similar results - it works for a while, but then the phone loses cell connectivity. I've since found that I toggling Airplane Mode on and off will restart the cell connection and tethering will also start working again, so it kind of works but not as well as it should.
I've been doing more searching regarding the fast.t-mobile.com APN and other threads seem to indicate that APN is specifically for LTE phones. Since the Moto G doesn't have an LTE chip, I wonder if that's causing the reliability problem?

PS - I think there might be a typo in your instructions and fast.t-tmobile.com should be fast.t-mobile.com - with just 1 t in the t-mobile. Thanks again!

You're right. I've fixed it. Thanks.
I rarely tether, so I haven't used it in every scenario. But when I do tether, its while tethering to my tablet, my friend's phone, or desktop/laptop WITH user agent switcher on Chrome to mask the desktop/laptop as a mobile device. After reading your post, I tethered to my laptop for an hour and did not encounter any issues. Do you lose connectivity even when the phone's signal strength is strong? Have you tried tethering to a different device (mobile)?

Thanks for the follow up. I've been trying it again today from my home where I get better cellular signal strength, but I'm getting similar results. It connects up and runs for 15-30 minutes and then starts flaking out. After rebooting both the phone and Chromebook, the Chromebook kept trying to go to a T-Mobile sign-in page, but couldn't even load that. And I too am using a Chrome extension to change the user agent to Android. The Moto G seems to be working fine and not losing it's connection this time.
I have also been able to test tethering on a Nexus 4 running Android 4.4.2 today and the Chromebook is connecting just fine and staying connected - no problems at all. I compared the APN settings between the 2 phones and the Nexus has the MMSC entry filled out (which xda won't allow me to post here because i'm too new), so I added that into the Moto G, but it did not help. Darn. I really like the Moto G, but really need reliable tethering. Thanks again...

You need install a User Agent String changer addon in your browser and change the string.
I use this one: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...r-c/djflhoibgkdhkhhcedjiklpkjnoahfmg?hl=en-US
I have instructions for another device here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201062
Good luck.

Thanks for the recommendation! Sorry I didn't make it more clear in my reply above, but I am using a user agent switcher - currently the Ultimate User Agent Switcher. Just to be sure, I disabled that extension and installed the User-Agent Switcher for Chrome that you linked to, but unfortunately I'm getting the same result - the Chromebook takes forever and keeps trying to connect to the "Welcome to T-Mobile" page.
And I tried again with the Nexus 4 and the Chromebook connects up immediately and runs great - no T-Mobile page or any other problems. I did a little more research and found a post on the Nexus 4 forum recommending disabling IPV6 in the APN Protocol, so I switched both phones from IPV6/IPV4 to just IPV4 and am getting the same result on each. Both phones work fine on the cell network and Internet, but the Chromebook only tethers successfully to the Nexus 4.

You need to set the Firefox string in my thread. That is the only desktop browser string that works. The reason why Chromebook/Ipad/Ipod devices work is because T-Mobile allows those devices since they can all have Cellular radios in them for radio. It would block legit paying customers.

Hey - thanks for the quick follow up!
Unfortunately, I just tried all 3 of the Firefox settings in the user agent switcher and rebooted the Chromebook each time, but no joy - each time after restarting and connecting to the Moto G wi-fi hotspot the Chromebook just tries to redirect me to the T-Mobile site.

Do you have the T-Mobile branded Moto G? If so you may need to disable the upsell app as I did in my L9 thread. You may also need to edit /etc/apns-conf.xml
Also, use this app instead of the builtin tethering. It may be notifying the carrier of tethering.
https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

Thanks again for more suggestions.
I am using an unlocked US GSM model of Moto G I purchased from Amazon.
I have not rooted yet, but may try that and the tethering app you linked to. I'm wondering if the stock app included on the Motorola device is the culprit, whereas the stock tethering app on the Nexus device may not be reporting back...

Bypass tethering check on laptop dock possible?

Would buy a laptop dock today if I wasn't being asked to relinquish my unlimited data plan in the process. Any way to bypass the tethering check? When I placed my phone into a dock it checks for either data tethering OR wireless network connection. My suggestion, but don't know if it can be done: a program that tricks the phone into thinking its on wifi when running 4g (a la 3g unrestrictor for ios). Is this possible at all? I know some people were asking about a similar program in order to run skype off of android in 3d a while back (prior to skype now accepting 3g for calls).
If I posted this in the wrong section, my apologies.
Moved to general as not android development
As off right now the laptop dock doesn't work with the work around to allow wifi tether without tethering data plan. Because it actually checks with att if you have the proper data plan. I've been searching for something similar to the iphone app my wii 3g.
Sent from my Motorola Atrix 4g XDA app.
i mean i can take my sim card out, use it with my dell streak, and connect the atrix with dock to my hotspot, but that's another phone i have to haul around... i'm still likely to buy the dock, $399 at amazon isn't all bad.
I just bought the dock, and I have some interesting notes to add:
When I plugged in my phone to the dock at the AT&T store, the dock did not check if I had tethering. When I then pruchased the dock, walked out to my car, and plugged it in, it did not check and I did browse the internet. I then drove home and tried again, and this time it told me that I needed a tethering plan. This all has to be a software check which runs at certain times, which leads me to believe that we can find and remove it.
I am replying to this while on the laptop dock. I do NOT have the tethering plan. I used this guide to enable hot spot and it works with firefox webtop.
Key for me was set up new APN, plug phone into laptop dock, THEN turn on hotspot. I am also using the atrix's hotspot with another pc.
edit: bah, turned off hotspot but i am still able to surf the web on the laptop dock. this is confusing.
I was able to get it to work somehow.
Here is what i did:
1) Created the custom APN for free tethering as described here.
2) Under APN type i put the following: default, dun, tether
3) i made sure my wifi hostspot is working properly (to make sure i setup the APN correctly). Once confirmed i shut down the hotspot app.
4) connected the HD media dock and launched webtop - it tried to verify the connection and kinda got stuck there.
5) i then changed the APN from the one i created to a built in one called "AT&T US Tether". at that point Webtop got access to the internet somehow (an no i don't have a tethering plan, i have an grandfathered unlimited data plan).
6) I immediately switched back to my custom APN after i saw webtop passed the connection authorization stage and voila...it is online via 3G/4G. I know for sure that the webtop is connecting through the custom APN and somehow - it works.

nice, i did something similar. but the odd thing for me though is that i turned off hotspot while docked and internet is still good to go. no wifi in sight so i know it's not picking up anything else.
Here's what I did.
1. Setup the wifi tethering hack (custom APN - AT&T with type default)
2. I docked it - it goes into - checking account status for webtop etc.
3. In the settings of the webtop (left of wifi icon, the little gear icon - go to advanced and then network proxy - change Location from Cellular to Default
That did it for me.
Hope it helps you too

Working for me as well Followed your directions exactly.
THIS WORKS! Awesome find, now I don't have to give up my unlimited plan.
So I've been going back and forth on what phone to get. In the end, it sounds like the Atrix has nearly as bright and colorful a screen as the Infuse, has a smaller device footprint, and still has gorilla glass. So I came to xda to see if...
1) Can I sideload apps?
2) Use the laptop dock without giving up my unlimited data plan?
3) Where is it cheapest to purchase the phone and possibly the dock off contract?
Seems like 1 is possible with root and upgrades, and 2 sounds possible as well. Are you having to go though each of those steps EVERY TIME you want to use the dock?
And if anyone has any suggestions on cheapest availability for someone in Washington State, I'd love to get this from somewhere tax free if possible.
Thanks in advance.

Successful tethering to Galaxy S4 with TMO

I am pleased to report that I have successfully tethered my Note Pro 10.1 to my Galaxy S4 using TrevE mod on my phone (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2273401).
I opted for the www.privateinternetaccess.com VPN service. I had an unused gift card from a retailer they accept for payment. 100 days of service for a $25 Bass Pro gift card.
It requires a rooted phone, but the Tab need not be rooted.
I had to tweak the settings on my S4 phone:
- Device Profile: Samsung Galaxy S3
- Setup Method: Hostapd (master)
- Enable WiFi-Encryption: On
- Channel: 01
- LAN network settings: 192.168.3.0/24
- Routing fix: On
- Change preferred DNS: I had to change it to the DNS used by my internet connection. You will need to verify that. I used my network connected desktop (Windows 7) cmd: ipconfig /all
- Disable Wake-Lock: On
I'm watching Netflix at the moment to see if I hit the TMO tethering cap.
Update: Yup. Just got the TMO warning that I was approaching my tethering limit.
More research needed.
Oh, well. It was worth a shot. I guess VPN no longer prevents TMO from seeing tethering.
If you're running KitKat on your phone, Android now reports all tethering usage as such by default. There's a simple fix for this on the Nexus devices and hopefully it will work for you as well.
You need to edit the "/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db" and add a new value to the global table called tether_dun_required. Give it a value of 0 and reboot your phone.
It's not free, but I like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.sqleditor to edit the settings.db file. It's made by the same people who make the popular Root Explorer.
Using that method on the Nexus devices you are able to tether other Android or iOS devices without counting against your tethering cap. Windows/Mac/Linux (desktop) devices would still be reported due to the "sniffing" t-mobile does, but your VPN solution should take care of that.
Edit: Also, you can check your tethering usage with the T-Mobile My Account app rather than waiting to hit the cap. Unfortunately it does not show tethering usage on the website, only the app.

I use my Nexus 4 running 4.3 on Tmobile to Tether to my Tab Pro 8.4, Laptop and Roku.
I use Foxfi to tether and it works without any changes on my Tab Pro 8.4. On my laptop, I connect to my Private Internet access VPN and I can go anywhere without being blocked. The moment I turn off the VPN the Tmobile upsale message appears.
I think Foxfi is the key to using the tethering.
Little bit off topic but can I use my phone (xperia pro) to threaten internet to tab pro?
Can I do it via cable like with laptop?
Sorry for noob question but looked through forum and couldn't find the answer.

Unlimited MetroPCS/T-Mobile Tether Settings.

First off I do believe you have to have unlimited data or use a VPN App to bypass your usage restrictions. Both companies have been unlawfully cracking down on data usage and overcharging our "unlimited" plans. So, without further ado this is how I have come of maintaining true unlimited tether usage!
Here is everything I have configure thus far with MetroPCS/T-Mobile that works 35/35 Mbps.
APN Settings:
APN-fast.metropcs.com
MMSC-http://metropcs.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
MCC-310
MNC-260
APN Type-default,supl,mms,dun
APN Protocol-IPv6
APN Roaming Protocol-IPv6
Wifi Tether Router Settings:
Interface-wlan0 (or whatever your config that works)
Method-Native Tether
Check ON Keep Screen ON / Prevent Stand By / Nat Policy Alternative / Reset Default Route
Wifi Tether Router DHCP Settings:
IP Address-172.16.11.0
DNS 1-8.8.8.8
DNS 2-8.8.4.4
Next, I use Free Tethering Unlocker
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2439424
Okay, so I've realized other methods have stopped working. The only method I have consistently work is the "Native Tether" option I explained previously. If the "Free Wifi Tether Unlocker" doesn't seem to help I suggest you use SQLite to modify the file: /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db, find wifi_tether_dun, click on it and change the value from 1 to 0 (some brands use "tether_entitlement_check_state" or other names, just remember the default value before you change to 0. Good luck!
SQL Table
Looking for the Tether* field in the sqlite file. I have searched manually, but cannot find it. Would you happen to know what table it is in? I looked for anything that might be related to tether but only found is_phone_provisioned.
Also FYI the link tether unlocker is 404.

my apologies, you don't necessarily need to edit the SQL database if you use the Free Tether Unlocker; supposedly it will do it for you. I guess the XDA link is 404'd but it can still be found on the Play Store located here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.kernelxp.freetether&hl=en

I suggest rebooting your phone after you make the suggested changes, then activate the hotspot. If you could possibly tell me the error as well. While in windows left click on your wifi icon in the taskbar, then right click your connection and click "status" and then "details", from there take a screenshot of your settings so I can verify it looks correct.
I will do and get back with you. Thanks for the help. I have my own way of getting Wifi Tether to work as a hotspot but it makes my phone hot as hell and sometimes I feel like I should just get better speeds. The normal hotspot don't heat my phone like this.

I have followed your step minus the sql as i cannot find the table. I do not know to what extent it works but it does work for me to some extent. Hulu.com wasnt loading much but since I have windows 10 I downloaded the hulu app and it is streaming fine for me.
This is the result that I got from speedtest I do not know how good or bad this is compared to my regular tethering.
Cant post url will find an alternative
Two problems that I have encountered is one that it displays the setting set through my regular hotspot not throught the wifi tether app so I do not know if I am just using regular tethering or what also i do know that I exceeded my 8gb limit. Also I experienced the wifi going out and I would need to restart it through the app I havent configured if it works also just by re enabling the wifi in settings. I also do not know if it may be because of my screen going off.
I also changed the setting from wan0 to auto.
Some sites such as google loads extremly fast and other load slow may be the content such as flash or something I heard it could be flash I do not know if hulu runs of flash.
Thanks hopefully it works fine , I just do not know if the speeds for the test are good or not. Would the speed be better through usb? Please inform me and if so how would this work would it be through PDANet? As i tried and would not get a connection.
speedtest. net/result/5115032036.png
please remove the space before net also I have not experienced the wifi timing out for the past hour with the screen on. I also changed the time out from inactivity from 10 to forever.

It is possible you need to alter your DNS settings. In the Wifi Tether Router settings go to DHCP settings and make sure your DNS is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, in my APN settings I have them both regular and roaming type set to IPv6

Sometimes if you have a RAM cleaner app it will kill the process, especially if you have an unpaid for apk as well, Fabio has his app secure when it comes to piracy so I do suggest you buy it if you haven't already. It updates almost every other day and if you're outdated for some reason it will crash quite a bit.

First off I do believe you have to have unlimited data or use a VPN App to bypass your usage restrictions. Both companies have been unlawfully cracking down on data usage and overcharging our "unlimited" plans. So, without further ado this is how I have come of maintaining true unlimited tether usage!
Here is everything I have configure thus far with MetroPCS/T-Mobile that works 35/35 Mbps.
APN Settings:
APN-fast.metropcs.com
MMSC-http://metropcs.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
MCC-310
MNC-260
APN Type-default,supl,mms,dun
APN Protocol-IPv6
APN Roaming Protocol-IPv6
Wifi Tether Router Settings:
Interface-wlan0 (or whatever your config that works)
Method-Native Tether
Check ON Keep Screen ON / Prevent Stand By / Nat Policy Alternative / Reset Default Route
Wifi Tether Router DHCP Settings:
IP Address-172.16.11.0
DNS 1-8.8.8.8
DNS 2-8.8.4.4
Next, I use Free Tethering Unlocker

Okay, so I've realized other methods have stopped working. The only method I have consistently work is the "Native Tether" option I explained previously. If the "Free Wifi Tether Unlocker" doesn't seem to help I suggest you use SQLite to modify the file: /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db, find wifi_tether_dun, click on it and change the value from 1 to 0 (some brands use "tether_entitlement_check_state" or other names, just remember the default value before you change to 0. Good luck!

Click to collapse
After changing apn as you instructed get the new foxfi. When you turn on hotspot click the 3 little dots and turn on proxy server...works great, still shows that small amount of tether is used, just to get connected(only like 15mb) once multiple proxy start can use many gb before even getting 100mb.
I have a iPhone will it work for iPhone.Im trying to play update a game but it takes long since I have used all my hotspot with my 60$ plan.

[XT1528] Simple fix for stock WiFi tether/hotspot no internet issue on GSM networks

tl;dr: If you have the WiFi hotspot issue where you can connect to the network but not get internet access try launching the stock verizon hotspot app and enabling it. Worked for me.
This is my first post please don't hate me for posting something so simple, thanks. :highfive:
I've been using my XT1528 as my main device for a few months now, preferring it to the Galaxy S4, but a major drawback was the inability to use it as a hotspot. I own a copy of easytether(for my linux machines) and PDAnet so it wasn't the end of the world but having to physically connect the phone is inconvenient.
Basically, you can enable the hotspot but it doesn't provide any connectivity. The standard fix for this on all phones is to edit the APN type setting to include "dun". When using the airplane mode trick to enable connectivity with a GSM carrier on the XT1528 apn changes don't stick for whatever reason. Half the time when I look an APN isn't even selected. I don't know if MMS works or not because I use hangouts to text but the SMSC seems to be fine. You also cannot enable the hotspot through any of the standard apps from the play store. FoxFi says it isn't compatible, etc.
So today I was playing around, testing M$' arrow launcher, and I launched the verizon "mobile hotspot" app on a whim, which seems to be just a shortcut to the stock tethering settings. It isn't though. When you go through this app and enable the hotspot - it works. I then disabled it, went to the tethering settings normally, enabled it, and the hotspot worked again. It makes no sense to me, I struggled to get this feature working for weeks and did a ton of googling for a solution. This app must temporarily add "dun" to whatever apn this thing is using because as a stock system app SELinux isn't blocking it. I haven't tried a reboot yet as I'm working on something with the phone and can't reboot it for a while.
With this solved I am in complete awe at what an incredible device I got for $25. From one hand usage, to the really nice feeling of the body, SD card slot, battery life. I am just so happy with this thing.
I haven't been able to replicate your results. I clicked on the red mobile Hotspot icon on the app drawer, set up and activated it. My tablet seems to connect, but the connection has no internet. This is driving me bonkers.

WiFi hotspot not working (Non Verizon network)

Hi guys
So I just bought this phone Verizon turbo 2 XT1585 (yeah I know I'm quite late ) and am struggling to get WiFi hotspot working. I can use the mobile data on phone but sharing this via WiFi hotspot doesn't seem to be working. I can connect to this hotspot through laptop and other phone but there's "no internet"...
And yeah I am on a non-Verizon carrier...
Any help somebody?
UPDATE / SOLVED: so after hours of hit and trial, it was the APN setting that needed a bit of tuning....
I had to enter "internet" (without quotes) under "APN Type" in the APN setting that I was using. Still not sure why it never happened to me on any other phone as I always left this field empty in all my previous/current other phones. Nonetheless I am happy in the end
Evem though after this mentioned setting net on other device works but after this setting your own phone apps does not connect. Need another solution
