[Q] Data retrieval with no screen - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Note 3 died on me recently. The screen flashed lots of colours and went off. If I boot it up, sometimes the screen works for a few seconds, then it 'crackles' with colours and goes off again.
I think the phone itself still runs, but you can't see. I took it to an official Samsung repair place, we thought just the screen needed replacing, but the new screen did the same. They think the main board has gone, which looks quite expensive.
If I boot into recovery, can I get a backup from it with the screen off using the command prompt? There's only a few apps I would like the data from.
I'm thinking I might do this, then buy a cheap 2nd hand Note 3 and sell this one for spares/repairs. (I have no warranty)

Through ADB you can copy data from phone.

Thanks, can you give any detail on how?

htc hd broken display

I'm very disappointed, I'm having problems again with my htc hd. At first it blocked and it wouldn't want to turn on. I sent it back twice under warranty with the same problem and in the end they replaced the motherboard.
I thought that now that practicly i have a new phone i won't have any problems with it. But surprise! The display just got crazy. When i touch the screen in a spot it activates in a completely different spot. It's the same thing on the entire screen. Check out the video.
Anybody had this problem? Oh, by the way the phone didn't managed to fall from somewhere, or get hit by something or anything else.
PS: Next step: htc snap. No touch, no worries. I hope so.

Could be that your screen alignment is not setup properly. Have you tried setting this up?
had EXACTLY the same issue. left my touch for an hour and when I cam back to it it was like that.
I sent it back to HTC and the first time they cancelled my warrenty because it had "illegal" software on it. I had Hardspl on there, nothing else.so when got it back I returned it to its origanol configuration and sent it back again. Its interesting you got a new motherboard in yours as they claimed that was the fault in mine and told me it was BER (beyond economical repair)
I am not going to accept their bull%$$^ and if it comes back again without repair i shall resend it again & again (cost me nothing) until either Carphone Warehouse replace it under warranty or HTC fix it under warranty. My phone was less tha 2 months old and NEVER been dropped or mishandled. It was in pristine condition

If you have removed everything illegal from phone, i.e. returned phone to original SPL and rom and then returned phone under warranty, they are obliged to fix it or send a replacement under warranty as your phone is only 2 months old. If they fail to comply I would threaten them with Standards agencies and Watchdog.
Let me know how you get on.

Couple ways:
1. Manual way by navigating to Start > Settings > System > Screen
2. By performing a hard reset. After you have performed a hard reset and rebooted device you should be prompted with a setup screen allowing you to align screen and then enter date/time.
Have you tried performing a hard reset?

I just did. Unfortunatelly the problem hasn't been fixed. The display isn't working good at all.
I guess i have nothing to do but to send it back under warranty again.

After your hard reset were you not able to screen align?
I had the same issue. Without any impact or misuse the screen started becoming misaligned. Re-aligning the screen would only work for a short time before it again went crazy - it gradually got worse until the phone was completely unusable.
It turned out to be hardware fault with the touch overlay. I sent it back and HTC repaired it under warranty.
Having searched a lot around the web, I think this is a fairly common fault.
The tricky part was doing anything with the phone when the screen doesn't work. e.g. removing the "illegal" software - hardspl and the cooked ROM. In the end I used some software called "EveryWAN remote support". This is free software that lets you operate the phone through your PC. You could try using this to get to the align screen. Good luck.

Update:
I sent it back again via CPW and they put a note on my file that although the software may have been "illegal" there is no way it could have caused the fault to the phone, I also restored it back to the origonal configuration so they could see it was a fault on the phone itself and not software.
Well, to cut a long story short HTC have accepted responsibilty and givenme an exchange unit and reintated my warranty so I am happy as Larry.
All I can say id dont give up on getting satidfaction out of HTC. in my opinion they have a duty of care to us as customers even if we put "illegal" software on our phone.

ABOUT THE SCREEN PROBLEM:
judging by the problem you have it might be that some of your digitizer wires arent working (broken or not having a proper contact) -- if the problem started immediately after you got your HD back from service, - then it might be that the guys there broke a wire of digitizer or didnt attach the wires to its connector-- Digitizer has 4 wires who connect to device (if only 3 or less wires work-- incorrect screen response and no way to align it) .... (sory for the english but I dont know all the names of the stuff i wish to mention )
I suggest you to take it to service and explain them the problem and say that it might be the wires of digitizer , because of the last service!
Good Luck!
oh and HTC Snap aint worth it- HD is best!!! you just had a bad model, which is one of thousands(you may consider yourself as a chosen one )
My display just stopped working. Completely. They changed the whole front part at warranty and now it works way faster while browsing it. It took 15 days to replace the part. Unfortunately I have other issues with the phone but I don't want to be off topic here.

I RMA mine due to black screen. After they returned the darn phone (after changing the bezel and motherboard - you would think it is as good as a new phone), Wifi and Bluetooth does not work. Gonna stick right beside the router or bluetooth set to detect...
I am going to condemn HTC soon....

Thanks, forgot that one
I have this problem, it was just this week - christmas day onwards. It's random as to the problem being there.
Bought the HD from mobiles.co.uk without cancelling the insurance.
it will always work again for a short period if I manage to get to the align screen config.
I'm running the stock rom (never flashed)
I have done some TF3D changes. (background, icons, etc.)
It can randomly decide to work again, and then randomly not work.
found out the volumer control and tap screen shortcut to the align screen config, so that should help me get it back quicker.
It's like the lower down the screen I tap, the further away it is from what actually sows on the screen. the call home back end buttons dont work when it is not aligned.
I'm in the UK and the date of the insurance letter is 15th June 2009 on an 18 month contract with O2
What should I do?
It happens more often now, and is getting annoying.
it can end up lower down the screen to now be out either above or below it
I really need help with it.
I ended up ringing the landline phone, and possibly (almost certainly) waking up people in the house struggling to turn it off.
A solution is needed pronto.
It can go wrong within seconds of doing the alignment thing

[JUL2] [Q] Help I accidentally the whole thing...

Well, technically I didn't do anything.
I just bought an HD2 off Craiglist, T8585, previously unlocked, so it would already play nice with my AT&T.
It had some SPB shell on it, so I went in to do a full data wipe and it reboots into something not stock-sense.
I attempted to boot into the bootloader and nothing happens--it just boots normally.
((Vol. down does work normally, mind you--the button is not broken.))
Any ideas as to what might be going on? I'm trying to see if they have the stock bootloader on this still, but the non-stock reset is throwing me off, as is the fact that I can't actually boot into the bootloader.
If I hold down both volumte buttons, I get a tricolor+white screen with an error, "Error: Copying file from SD Card failed, system will shut down."
Pictures attached to show current home-screen and error screen.
Thanks for your help.
Did you try without SD card? If there is something "flashable" on it, maybe your device tries to do something, but reading existing data fails.
My bro if im not wrong this hd2 seems like hd2 clone not original... so be very carefully when you try something with flashing ....

wats d purpose of you wanting to check bootloader ?
I assume all you want back is Sense UI ?
Sense UI would be a start, yes, but I would have liked to flash WP7 and/or Android onto it, too.
Emm, i think that thats not HTC HD 2, thats MKT HD2, a clone looks almost 1:1 compared to htc hd 2.

Simply go to Start--Settings--
home--Items--Check HTC Sense and uncheck all the rest
that should do...
also if it is an hd2 and you have wm on it there are many endkeys / apps that have a reboot into bootloader.

from looking at the picture, its hard to tell if it is a clone...if it is not an HTC HD2, but rather a clone, more photos of the device would clarify it. the body is not clearly visible in the two pictures you've attached.
if it is a clone, that would explain the little "surprises" you are encountering here and there
Further investigation yields that the hard-reset ROM does not have Sense stock, so I'm guessing that this is, sadly, a clone.
I had no way to tell at the time, as the previous owner had some shell installed and I couldn't tell from the body alone--it looks like a real one, and it was advertised (and had the box/materials of) a legit HTC phone...
Sucks that I've been scammed and that I'm out the amount I paid. First time I've ever been burned off CL.

how do you know its a clone ? may be the ROM is a NON-Sense D) ROM !!!
"MTKProfessional" is an appearance type on the phone. This, combined with the quirks and comparing it to a review of the "HD9" leads me to believe it's in fact a clone--and not even the pretty impressive v2 clone.
I'm disappointed, really.
it looks so real !
Holy ****, Vagues.
theres previous news & complain about the HD2 KIRF edition, almost look the same but weight & hardware quality is different.

To be honest, I wouldn´t have noticed that you might have a clone just from the pictures you posted - but another poster discovered that fact.
Now, that´s what I call criminal - no less. A fake with a kind of a "phantasy" name is one thing, but to sell a copied device, which carries the real brand, as a real product, is indeed criminal. In my country, it´s even an official crime.
I´m sorry for you, mate. It´s not nice getting ripped off like this.
I wonder if you can't turn that guy in at the police.
I think you have all the evidence that he know this was a fake.
Also if you look at the loudspeaker grill (where you put your ear at), mine is black and this one looks silver.
seems like a clone to me. the sensors (light and proximity) are larger, and the bootloader screen is a bit different.
Hw do u know if one is a clone?

Nexus 4 Not Recognizing Touch Input (VIDEO)

So I got some bad news
There is an area on my Nexus 4 that receives no touch input. Either that, or it is extremely inconsistent. This is the section right about where the bottom row of icons are located, directly above the on-screen navigation buttons.
I tried installing this "fix" for touch sensitivity, but it did not fix the specific problem I am having. And I noticed this problem before I tried that fix, so it was not a result of that.
I am about to try a full system reset to see if that helps. Hopefully it will. I will post back if it does.
If I have to send it back to Google, what process would I need to go through to make sure they don't know I rooted? Just unroot? Or would I also have to lock the bootloader as well? And would a full system reset do all of that? Or do I need to go back and use the toolkit?
Here is a video I just shot showing the problem:
EDIT: And unfortunately a full reset just made it worse

very interesting......
I would definitely RMA that. It's clearly an issue. I just ran the same touch tests you did in the video and have none of those same problems. The screen recognizes my touch even at the very bottom of the screen where the nav bar starts.
As for unrooting/re-lockingt he bootloader, just use Wug's toolkit:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015469
This worked flawlessly for me to unroot and re-lock the bootloader of my first N4 before sending it back to them. The toolkit is very straight forward.
I tried using the Nexus 4 toolkit to restore to a factory image, but I am getting an error every time it tries to download it

Just make sure you follow the step by step guide for installing the proper drivers and uninstalling rogue ones before trying to unroot/lock the bootloader. It is super easy just make sure you read all the instructions and follow them to a T. After doing that the toolkit will work perfectly for you moving forward. Even with your next N4. I used it again today to root my replacement N4.
I encountered a MAJOR problem!
I did the flash stock + unroot part and that worked fine. But I am completely stuck on the last part.
Now I need to lock the bootloader again. In order to do that, I have to have USB debugging turn on. The problem is that in order to turn it on, I have to get into the phone. But I am stuck on the initial phone setup! The only way to move past the stage I am stuck on is to click an arrow, but the arrow is in the dead zone and the dead zone just got worse! I can't move on!
Anybody have any advice? I am totally stuck.
EDIT: Got it! At that stage I put the phone in landscape to avoid the dead area. Then the Android tutorial came out and I couldn't get out of it to go to settings and enable USB debugging mode. So I went to the lockscreen, after 20 tries got Google now pulled up, and was able to type in settings to open it up and enable USB debugging mode. Finally got the bootloader locked. Should I be good to send it back to Google now?

I hava the same issue
I have same issue in the same area of display, but my is sporadic, it's not present all the time. It comes and goes. I removed front protector, issue was still present. Then I removed back protector and did a factory reset, and now it's gone for 5 days. It's bought in Canada, and I'm from Serbia so it's a little tricky for me to send it for RMA because now I am not sure if the issue is realy hardware type. I run it in safe mode and it behave same.
Sometimes if goes totaly crazy with tens of simoultanous touches around non working stripe. Lock unlock and it's gone.
Tafak?!?? Don't know what to do...

[Q] Nexus 4 Spots On Screen

I already trouble shot it with Google but I figured I would ask here as most of you know more than they.
I already did a factory reset 3 days ago because I deleted a file I shouldn't have. But now it has come down to them recommending me do another and then getting back if it still persists.
The problem is when I turn my screen back on I see white spots all over the screen for 2-3 seconds. I can't imagine why, or even why a factory reset is going to fix.
I have NEVER dropped (cross fingers) or got it wet, and truthfully have no idea how to tell and wouldnt want to begin taking the back off.
I am most certain there is no water damage
So I have tried:
Switched Wallpapers
Turned phone off then on
Switched from Apex to Launcher
Still there. I am posting a pic below. If anyone could help I would be most grateful.
Again you prolly know more than most of their employees
One time when I had a problem, but eventually got fixed, this is what I was told, they will do an advanced replacement, BUT I have to pay $350, then get it back when they get and verify the phone I send
I am not working so would not be able to do that. I suppose I could switch to my phone of choice I have here and just send it in?
Or I was told contact LG where there is no downpayment needed.
In either case, back then I was told there was stock for this type of situation, now I am told they no longer have any? You have any idea when they will catch up
THANKS for even taking time to read this, and even more if you can help

Can't imagine what sort of hardware issue or fault would cause that, it looks like some sort of effect done by software.
You need to reset your phone and go back to the stock ROM (if not already using that) and then see if it still does it, I suspect it will not.
Regards
Phil
So this was present before the factory reset 3 days ago? If not then do it again

Thanks to everyone, as you were responding, my friend Macky (maybe you know him LOL) suspected it had to be software/app because it showed up on the screen shot. So he said it wasnt hardware
I reset again and no problem

lets say it wasn't the app, what could have caused it. (btw I dont root so dont know all the basics you prolly do) Just simple things like the computer that get messed up??

Backup w/ Broken Screen? (TWRP Installed)

Hey guys, I recently broke the LCD on my Note 3 running stock KitKat ( :crying: ) and realized I hadn't done a nandroid backup in quite some time...
I tried the obvious adb pull, but for some reason I couldn't even get into adb shell or see my device in the device list like I had previously.
I'm all out of ideas now...
Could somebody please throw some help my way?
Does your phone even boot up? Do you get sound, vibration, anything to indicate it's still working internally beside blank screen?
Are you going to try to fix it? buy new one? upgrade to Note 4? Me and my wife used to own GS3 and when she broke her screen, I swapped motherboard with mine to copy pictures mostly and some other stuff, but we werent going to fix it, since I decided to get her GS5.

Are you going to try to fix it? buy new one? upgrade to Note 4? Me and my wife used to own GS3 and when she broke her screen, I swapped motherboard with mine to copy pictures mostly and some other stuff, but we werent going to fix it, since I decided to get her GS5.

I'm getting a replacement through the phone insurance. It does turn on and function perfectly normal, the screen just has a tiny, tiny fracture point with a crack spanning across the screen horizontally, rendering the bottom half unusable. The top half is functioning though.
I cannot unlock my phone or make a backup with the bottom half not working.
Try using a bluetooth mouse or wired mouse with otg cable

Could help, made for exactly your problem. If you manage to get it working download Nandroid Offline backup, which allows you to make a Nandroid backup from Android itself, rather than CWM/TWRP.
EDIT -- Just checked and it works an absolute treat. Providing you had USB Debugging enabled before your phone got broke, it should work fine. It even has the option to swipe to unlock or disable a pattern unlock if you had one enabled.

Thank you for the link - it looks like it would be a great solution, but unfortunately I cannot enable USB debugging with the code given :\. I may be out of luck
Well, if nothing else works and data on the phone is that important, then you need to convince the insurance company to send you new Note 3 first and swap the MB as I suggested to retrieve the data, then put everything back to original. I have not done this on Note 3, but GS3 was probably one of easier electronics repairs I've done, just follow one of many youtube videos, to make sure you don't break some wire, before disconnecting. Possibly a shop could do that for you.
Well, freakin sweet deal. After being on the phone with the insurance company and US Cellular for two and a half hours and having them tell me everybody was out of Note 3's and they would only give me $400 bucks for my old phone minus my $175 deductible, I received another call from management at the insurance company apologizing and letting me know that they'd offer me $725.
It just so happens the new Note 4 is $770, so thank the Lord I'm in a good spot!
