The most detailed Z3 compact review on the net - Xperia Z3 Compact General

Google search "notebook checker .net"
Scroll down to October 14 and click on z3 compact.
Aplogies for no direct link, being new to the forum prevents me.

Great review. Thanks for posting it.

"Plastic and glass are the materials of the Xperia Z3 Compact. The frame is, unlike the Xperia Z3, not made of metal, but the high build quality reminds us of other family members. Unfortunately, this is also true for the stability, which is not perfect: You can twist some of the corners and there are picture distortions, the same happens when you push down certain spots at the back. Once again, you cannot open the Xperia Z3 Compact, so you cannot replace a faulty battery by yourself."
Built quality also criticized.

I was pleasantly surprised by their level of detail in reviews and bookmarked them for the future
So many tech sites (engadget, the verge, etc) don't really review... well... anything. They simply write an article for page hits as quickly as possible and say things like "the brightness is good" or "the battery life is excellent" thinking that is sufficient for a review
If anything most tech websites out there are simply "preview" websites (not review) since all really do is reread the spec sheet / keynote points fed to them by the OEMs and disguise it within a fancy written article.
The only websites, besides this one I just stumbled upon, I've seen give actually testing data about the phone beyond just the spec sheet numbers is Anandtech and Ars Technica.

for battery run time, does it mean Z1 compact is better than z3 compact?

Nilay Patel address just that in the episode of Twit above. He basically says most people just want to know how it's going to affect their life, not the specs and the technical differences. I guess to the masses, he's right, and perhaps it shows with the popularity of his site.
I'm a techy, so I appreciate in-depth reviews at sites like ars, anandtech, and the site linked earlier in this thread.

Nice review, I was looking for something like this. Most reviews were very superficial, I want to see hard numbers and comparisons.
Anyway I also made a review after I got it:

Guess you'd agree that criticism is on a very high level though...
On the GPS performance:
My experience with the Z3C's GPS performance, luckily, is completely different (FW .98 DE). The shots below have just been made, about 15 seconds after turning on GPS (GPS only, no Google services/A-GPS!) and having started the App. Condition: overcast sky, urban area, outside, between buildings, GPS used last time = some 5 days ago. As you can see, it took exactly 3 seconds for the Z3C to get and keep the signal and I always see this behaviour:

}
But, let's go one by one...
"It is not possible to locate your position indoors and it takes a while outdoors before the smartphone finds enough satellites to locate our position down to 10 meters (~32.8 ft)."
-> Conditions? How many floors above? Anyway, how relevant is using GPS indoors?
-> Outdoors, My Z3C has no problems to nail down accuracy to 3 to 4 meters all the times.
"We test the Xperia Z3 Compact on a bicycle ride and compare it with the professional navigation device Garmin Edge 500. The Xperia Z3 Compact indicates around 400 meters (~1312 ft) less than the professional device, and the location points are also a bit confused at the bridge and let us "fly" above the crossing road. The situation is better in the forest section, but the Garmin Edge 500 is still more accurate."
-> How long was the ride showing on a standard bike tachometer in order to judge the 400 meters difference? Who says that the Garmin is more accurate!
-> How was the Z3C actually mounted, side-by-side with the Edge 500 or anywhere else?
-> Better situation in the woods is very strange.
-> What App has actually been used for recording? There's a huge dependency on the App.
I've tested with MapFactor Navigator and have not seen a single glitch on now 3x 50+km rides.
As I had already written in a different thread, the Z3C GPS performace is easily on par with my Garmin Oregon 450 as well as 600, if not better then the 600 even.
Why the testers of notebookcheck site have seen such bad results is something yet to clarify. Bad unit, older/different FW... ?
Attched is the very first track I recorded with the Z3C, see and judge yourselves.

effort appreciated

thanks for your review. much better getting reviews who actually own the phone as their own and not just a 10 minute quick look. I had the z1 compact and the camera was useless so I went back to my iPhone 4s, which post iOS 8, is now pretty slow and i fancy a change but without compromising on the camera or anything much bigger to hold... size, camera and battery life are probably things I look for in a phone so the z3c seems a logical choice.. still happy with yours?

AppleCare: The iPhone 4 Update Won't Solve the Antenna Problem
Well this is just a nice way to come back from a holiday. It seems someone at AppleCare has stated that the iOS 4 update won't solve the antenna issues so many users are complaining about on their new iPhone 4. Apparently it will change the way the antenna indicator calculates bars, but that won't solve what happens when you touch the left lower portion of the antenna.
We'll still call this post a rumor until we see the update to the OS actually working and confirming it as a fact, but according to Gizmodo, they gave AppleCare a call three times today and in these three times they got the same "pretty much read" responses:
• There is an antenna interference problem when you hold the iPhone 4 in a certain way
• One solution is to hold the phone differently, avoiding to touch the left bottom corner of the phone
• The other other solution is to buy a case or one of Apple's $30 bumpers
• The incoming software update will not fix this antenna problem, only change the way the phone displays the available signal, make it more accurate
So much for state of the art industrial design. Don't get me wrong, the concept is cool and I am a big fan of the phone. I just wouldn't call this a break through until Apple can prove it can work. Surely getting a free bumper is a great solution Apple should attend to by giving these away for free, but there are some of us here who simply don't like to carry their phones on cases..
ok what now??

but that looks ugly and cheap
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha....you get the point
recently i was talking w/ a frind of me about the hd2 (he really wants one and sorfs this forum very often) and we began to talk about the iphone.
[flame]
we began talking about the new "features" of the ios 4 (about 2/3 of those "features" are supported by wm/android for ages; the others are useless, like increase digital zoom for the camera). i then took a look on apple's ios4 web site.
for your sanity i advise NOT to take a look on that page, i don't know if i should laugh out loud about what is written on that page or rather bash my head against a wall.
beginning at that "facetime" stuffs (video telephy) that only works when connected to wifi, to the "security measures" and busibess functions, it's all either "wtf lol" or "wft lame" or even both for me.
and in the headline it states "With its easy-to-use interface, amazing features, and rock-solid stability, iOS — Apple’s mobile operating system — is the foundation of iPhone. And even as other phones try to catch up, the technologies and features built into iOS 4 keep it years ahead of the competition". come on.
[/flame]
We don't own iPhone 4's so why should we care one way or another?
This thread is more than a little pathetic.

Motorola Xoom WiFi Review

Here is our review of the Motorola Xoom:
Overall, the Motorola Xoom performed very well and is a very good tablet. However with a price of $599 for the WiFi version, this is on the high side. In addition, we feel that the Xoom was rushed to the market. It is not complete. First, it launched without being Adobe Flash ready which is a key advantage over the iPad. However by the time we received our unit, Flash 10.2 was available on the Android Market so we installed it without a problem. Second, the micro-SD expansion slot is not useable but will be with a firmware update. Although the tablet has a large 32GB built-in memory, it should still have a working expansion slot. Third, the Xoom was not easily identifiable through two different Windows 7 computers. Windows 7 installed the necessary drivers but we still experienced some problems with the computer recognizing the Xoom.
The Xoom is the first table to run Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). Every other tablet manufacturer is probably keeping an eye on how well the Xoom does. This review did not concentrate on Honeycomb but we were impressed with its tablet-specific UI. It does the job well but it still needs to be improved upon. Our two main gripes with Honeycomb is 1) lack of a native file manager; and 2) lack of true task manager/switcher. Android is “better” than Apple's iOS because it can multi-task. However, Honeycomb still fails to easily switch open apps. RIM's PlayBook and HP webOS do this well so why can't Android? Even the Notion Ink Adam created an app switcher to easily change apps. Also there is a lack of tablet specific apps on the Android Market.
The Motorola Xoom performs well. If the price was not so high, we may overlook some of its weaknesses. It is a powerful tablet and the best non-Apple tablet currently on the market. We are giving it a 4.22 out of 5 points which is the highest score we have given a tablet. Many other Android tablets (at a lower price) will be launching this year so it will be difficult for Motorola to become a leader unless it reduces its price.

er
The Motorola Xoom does include a 5MP front facing camera and a 2MP rear facing. The rear camera takes good pictures and HD videos (see video of Additional Footage).

I class the front as the screen and the rear as the one at the back facing out... is the above correct?
I thought it was 5MP on the back and 2MP on the front?

rather spammy if you ask me. just a snippit from his own website... read more.
anyway, kinda weird that the droid x and archos 70 have such different cpu and gpu scores - they're both running the same 3630 and powervr SGX530.
The person has an interest in mobile gadgets and is trying to jumpstart his blog. Nothing wrong with that. The review is an honest effort, no matter what you may think of it.
@OP
Suggest to use more whitespace for better legibility, and shorter paragraph & sentences, aka newstyle writing. People online have very limited attention span. More pics would help illustrate and to make the body copy less dense.
On a tech basis, there are different aspects of system speeds: general performance (synthetic CPU benchmarks), web performance (browser benchmarks), screen response, multimedia performance, game performance (gfx benchmarks). Different CPUs have different strengths. For example, the Teg2 has strong general & game perf, but weak video playback, and screen responsiveness is lackluster. The last is probably hampered by the OS, but is worth noting, especially when comparing against a more polished device like the iPad 2.
Suggest you cover each aspect separately, since each can vary.
Keep up what you're doing, and ignore the riff-raff.
I think this is the wrong place to jumpstart his blog. We already had a million of reviews and a million of Ipad vs Xoom discussions. The least he could have done is to post the whole article on here and then a link to his blog.
That would be an idiotic way to do it. Online pieces typically have accompanying formatting & pics, which wouldn't translate to a text forum. This is the Internet. We use links now.
There's no difference between posting a review link from a personal blog as opposed to one from Engadget, which, last I checked, is a blog.

I can't see how this is an idiotic way of doing it. This thread contains no information. A blog contains 90% text, who cares about the formatting? If he would post his article we could comment and discuss it on here which is what this forum is about. If it is a well written article people would click on the link and subscribe to his blog.
There is no need for links to Engadget either. Posts on this forum are much more informative and authentic than any other review article out there. If i want to read review articles or look at pictures i type in motorola xoom into google. There is hardly a shortage. No need to spam this forum.
On another note, "our last review", "TabletConnect first reported" and a blog full of adverts doesn't really sound personal to me.
Thanks for the feedback both positive and negative.
@Lothaen You are correct. My error as it was a typo.
@e.mote I appreciate the support and feedback.

http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/04/18/camera-shootout-xperia-z-goes-up-against-the-galaxy-s4-and-htc-one/
It's good that this gets more attention, but I don't hope that Sony will only look at this problem as a compression problem, because there is a lot more wrong here.
Sorry but I've had a good test of the Sony camera compared to HTC one and galaxy s3 and the xperia camera edges it barring the odd bit of over compression but I'll take it for less noise and better colour reproduction than both those phones
I believe the z has bigger fish to fry like unforgivable viewing angles, awful speaker quality, lag and ui skipping issues, over heating and odd and inconsistent battery life.
I loved this phone on face value but the more I use it the more I pick it apart
The camera is by far it's best attribute and is better than its competitors right now even if the photos are a little soft.

Viewing angles: You want to look at the phone from a 45 degree angle? For what reason? Or do you love that other people can read your text's?
Aweful speaker quality: Ok lets put a better speaker in, but remove the whole concept of the phone being water proof/resistant
Lag: Yeah lag..... where!?
ui skipping issues: ??? Examples please.
Over heating: Name 1 phone that doesn't overheat, isn't it logical that the processor becomes hot when it need to process something big?? Since our phone's are made out of glass we will notice it even more, since glass is a good heat conductor (You could/should've known that before you bought the phone)
Inconsistent battery life : Partly true, it also has to do with the apps that you run, so you can't really blame Sony for that.
ANYWAYS.....this topic is about the camera so lets leave other issues aside.
What's all this about the camera, the Zs camera is easily the best I've ever seen. Stop using reviews as a basis for a petition. Many of these sites have their own agenda. I've repeatedly heard them say the Zs camera is worse than that of the iPhone. Well they could have fooled me. That claim doesn't stand up at all. It's biased stupidity.

You should not expect the same quality pic in a macro shot than in a night shot. With other phone, in those conditions, you would get a nice black photo. In Xperia Z you get a noisy pic, but at least it's not black.
I have to agree with the issue here. Before I even looked at the Xperia subforum, after coming from an S3, I knew straight away that I couldn't take a half decent picture and after 30 or 40 shots didn't get a single image I could use.
I could get a perfect picture on my S3, default settings almost every time, and if not, certainly the second time.
Nobody can say that's placebo caused by popular belief because I never even saw the complaints until I had decided for myself the picture quality was apalling.
the camera app itself is a big problem because it was ported from x1,x2 (windows phones) and tweaked a bit. guys who have/had x1 or x2 know what im talking about
when sony finally makes new or updates camera app some problems might go away
Some camera problems are dued to picture softness. Camera360 automatically "improves" the quality with a focus filter, you should test it.

PhoneArena Review now out!

I haven't read it yet... http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Sony-Xperia-Z1-Review_id3427
The photos looks miles better than the photos GsmArena took. It's pretty obvious different Review units has different hw/sf tweaks in them
Sadly, the battery wasn't reviewed. Also, I would have liked to have seen some commentary on the phone's relatively low headphone's output power. I do enjoy my music and I'm concerned this won't be loud enough with my earphones plugged in. I'll definitely be checking out a device before I even seriously consider buying a Z1, but does anyone have any input on this matter?

The review just said power output. I mean, if it doesn't sound loud, just crank up the volume. I think the power thing relates to bass or treble. There's an option to increase those settings though.

Well, I'm a little agog,.... A good review of a Sony-made mobile phone from Phone Arena. Will wonders never cease?
Well, my handset has dropped by (review up shortly) and I have to say: pleasantly surprised by the camera - yes, the processing could be better in low light but the clarity in daylight, even on a dim and grey Yorkshire day, is actually pretty good. I'm thinking that has summat to do with the software update that I received within moments of booting it up.
ONE FLY IN THE OINTMENT,.... and it's big fella,.....
Sadly, much like GSM Arena, my camera lens appears to have an aberration - a fuzzy area to the left of centre where the focus is out. I don't have time to send it back for replacement before going way on a trip this week but it'll be heading back to O2 and onward to Sony as soon as I get back.
Dear Sony: Quality control,... you might want to look it up.

GSMarena uses a preproduction unit, not the actual retail unit. Look at their unboxing - doesn't have headsets.

True GSMARENA has pre production unit they have mentioned it in review itself, so this is the true potential of the phone. Absolutely flies, great work Sony!!

as you can see it's still full of grain/over processing. no doubt that pictures look great when not viewed 1:1. What this translates to for the regular user is that some digital zoom/cropping of the 20mp image won't look so great. but when has it ever except on the 1020?
i just expected more from them...
Screen seems good enough now, major problem is bezel and SIZE of device.

Honestly those two are personal preference, I have small hands and I don't mind it. A lot of devices have big bezels and it doesn't seem to bother a lot of people.

Thread tile reads PHONE ARENA. but the URL is of FONE ARENA. Two different web sites.
FONE ARENA isn't a site that comes recommended very highly. This is just a people's vote. Meh. What's popular isn't always the best.
As for PHONE ARENA, the reviews of the two phones are already out.
Z1 - 9.2 & 1020 - 8.5
These scores are by the reviewers of that site.
Better comparison would be Z1 vs 1520. Same size sensor for a start.
1520 - 9.0
Nokia has the better software because WP8 allows manual focus, shutter speed selection & RAW which android still does not permit.

Because it's actually a good camera. Considering there's such a hoo-ha about how great the camera on the Z1 it actually is a joke. It's grainy and generally an all round crap camera. My galaxy s3 takes better photos.
The only reason why I had to ditch windows phone is cause the notification system doesn't work properly, everything else about it is fantastic.
Nokia made some terrible choices but they without a doubt make damn good phone-camera mash ups which is more and more important now.

Crap? lol. People are so extreme, either it's the best camera ever or the worst camera ever. The Z1's camera's no way a joke. It's not the best but it's not crap either.

FONE ARENA isn't a site that comes recommended very highly LOL Check the site's stats you will come to know is it recommended or not...Site has got extremely awesome record and one of the best Tech site startups ever made by any "individual person" on Planet Earth. ( Millions of traffic it has got daily ).
If you don't know about its Alexa Rank, Page Rank and traffic stats and reader's strength then don't pass your judgement..!!!
Rest whatever you said about Z1, I agree.
Was going to vote Nokia cause it looks and feels nice compared to Z1 but what makes a phone a phone is the UI and apps. So I choose Z1 cause of android almost limitless customization options and huge number of app selection which no other phone has.

To be really blunt, when you move to updated hardware, no matter which device you had before you should expect to excel and be better in every department than your old hardware. It technically might be there... But the fact superior auto mode is absurdly inferior to what I get off much older hardware is very very bad.

Pulls loads of fanboys and i'm going by what other people said elsewhere about it. Couldn't care less about their stats. Voting polls are such a great way to push said stats up isn't it.
So i will repeat it again. fone arena (with an F) isn't a site i'd bother with.
Only thing stopping the 1020 from being more popular is the asinine pricing of it in India. Hello Nokia! your other models were cheaper and actually offered serious competition so WTF did you price the 1020 more than the note 3.
