PhoneArena Review now out! - Xperia Z1 General

I haven't read it yet... http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Sony-Xperia-Z1-Review_id3427

The photos looks miles better than the photos GsmArena took. It's pretty obvious different Review units has different hw/sf tweaks in them

Sadly, the battery wasn't reviewed. Also, I would have liked to have seen some commentary on the phone's relatively low headphone's output power. I do enjoy my music and I'm concerned this won't be loud enough with my earphones plugged in. I'll definitely be checking out a device before I even seriously consider buying a Z1, but does anyone have any input on this matter?

The review just said power output. I mean, if it doesn't sound loud, just crank up the volume. I think the power thing relates to bass or treble. There's an option to increase those settings though.

Sorry, I guess I'm showing my ignorance? But I do know of at least one member here who is experiencing a lack of loudness, and I don't think it's the first time I've read that about the Z1

Surprised
Well, I'm a little agog,.... A good review of a Sony-made mobile phone from Phone Arena. Will wonders never cease?
Well, my handset has dropped by (review up shortly) and I have to say: pleasantly surprised by the camera - yes, the processing could be better in low light but the clarity in daylight, even on a dim and grey Yorkshire day, is actually pretty good. I'm thinking that has summat to do with the software update that I received within moments of booting it up.
ONE FLY IN THE OINTMENT,.... and it's big fella,.....
Sadly, much like GSM Arena, my camera lens appears to have an aberration - a fuzzy area to the left of centre where the focus is out. I don't have time to send it back for replacement before going way on a trip this week but it'll be heading back to O2 and onward to Sony as soon as I get back.
Dear Sony: Quality control,... you might want to look it up.

GSMarena uses a preproduction unit, not the actual retail unit. Look at their unboxing - doesn't have headsets.

True GSMARENA has pre production unit they have mentioned it in review itself, so this is the true potential of the phone. Absolutely flies, great work Sony!!

pictures look about the same, here's a 1:1 view of their Strong-Light indoor shot.

as you can see it's still full of grain/over processing. no doubt that pictures look great when not viewed 1:1. What this translates to for the regular user is that some digital zoom/cropping of the 20mp image won't look so great. but when has it ever except on the 1020?
i just expected more from them...

Screen seems good enough now, major problem is bezel and SIZE of device.

Honestly those two are personal preference, I have small hands and I don't mind it. A lot of devices have big bezels and it doesn't seem to bother a lot of people.

Consistent blurry pictures with flash *big picture warning*

I can actually say I haven't been able to take 1 clear picture with flash. Is there something wrong with my phone? I have a fairly steady hand, I used to be a DSLR photographer and never had any problems. What gives to this? here are some examples, not even a moving object. These pictures are taken stabilized on my knee

R.I.P., Left Shift key.
As a rule, indoor pictures with the Evo are just poor quality. Outside, they're crystal clear, but even with the flash, when you're inside the camera is adjusting the exposure to the ambient light, which means grainy, blurry pics. There are some tweaks you can do to minimize this (white balance, exposure defaults, etc.) but in general it's just not that great.
Same with video: If you're inside, the camcorder drops down to, like, 8-10fps capture. Outside it does much better. It's all about the ambient lighting.
the lighting looks bad, and plus you gotta click in the pic to focus it and then hold down the shutter button untill you see your pic, thats the only way i can take pics

Why would that matter?
Check out this article, it is a good demonstration of how the lens (or in this case, lens cover) really has a very minimal effect - if any - on image quality.

Are you using the netarchy kernel? I have had similar issues with photos using flash with fresh and the netarchy kernel. Switching back to stock fixed it for me.

i cant beleive, or i missed, no one pointing this out.
you are friggin shaking in the picture dude.
no picture will look good when there is movement.
but i side with you, my camera compared to my wifes camera is garbage.
my wifes takes consistantly better video and stills than mine does.
mine will show the camera focusing and all it does is focus near then far, then stops, it never stops on the right focus point, you can see where it focuses right on past it.
if there was a hack to allow a slider for focus that would be kick ass.
after some time and practice it would be easy to use the slider for focus.
but my shots such ass, big time.
if i Zoom in it will focus much better than if it isnt.
so i am not sure where the focus point is compared to where you place your finger but it isnt where you place your finger thats for sure.
It sounds like a problem my phone seemed to have in the beginning; it would focus and then stop auto focus a little blurry. I don't know what fixed it, but after I had the phone a few weeks, the issue seemed to go away. Now I can take pretty clear and amazingly focused photos.
As for the iPhone troll, I ignored him as I was on a website viewing some flash content on my phone just after I got done with a video conference on 3G . I then made a phone call and held the phone with both hands without dropping the call.

You do know that the camera tech is almost identical? Only thing that is changing the "quality" of the pictures/video is software + compression.

http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/04/18/camera-shootout-xperia-z-goes-up-against-the-galaxy-s4-and-htc-one/
It's good that this gets more attention, but I don't hope that Sony will only look at this problem as a compression problem, because there is a lot more wrong here.
Sorry but I've had a good test of the Sony camera compared to HTC one and galaxy s3 and the xperia camera edges it barring the odd bit of over compression but I'll take it for less noise and better colour reproduction than both those phones
I believe the z has bigger fish to fry like unforgivable viewing angles, awful speaker quality, lag and ui skipping issues, over heating and odd and inconsistent battery life.
I loved this phone on face value but the more I use it the more I pick it apart
The camera is by far it's best attribute and is better than its competitors right now even if the photos are a little soft.

Viewing angles: You want to look at the phone from a 45 degree angle? For what reason? Or do you love that other people can read your text's?
Aweful speaker quality: Ok lets put a better speaker in, but remove the whole concept of the phone being water proof/resistant
Lag: Yeah lag..... where!?
ui skipping issues: ??? Examples please.
Over heating: Name 1 phone that doesn't overheat, isn't it logical that the processor becomes hot when it need to process something big?? Since our phone's are made out of glass we will notice it even more, since glass is a good heat conductor (You could/should've known that before you bought the phone)
Inconsistent battery life : Partly true, it also has to do with the apps that you run, so you can't really blame Sony for that.
ANYWAYS.....this topic is about the camera so lets leave other issues aside.
What's all this about the camera, the Zs camera is easily the best I've ever seen. Stop using reviews as a basis for a petition. Many of these sites have their own agenda. I've repeatedly heard them say the Zs camera is worse than that of the iPhone. Well they could have fooled me. That claim doesn't stand up at all. It's biased stupidity.

You should not expect the same quality pic in a macro shot than in a night shot. With other phone, in those conditions, you would get a nice black photo. In Xperia Z you get a noisy pic, but at least it's not black.
I have to agree with the issue here. Before I even looked at the Xperia subforum, after coming from an S3, I knew straight away that I couldn't take a half decent picture and after 30 or 40 shots didn't get a single image I could use.
I could get a perfect picture on my S3, default settings almost every time, and if not, certainly the second time.
Nobody can say that's placebo caused by popular belief because I never even saw the complaints until I had decided for myself the picture quality was apalling.
the camera app itself is a big problem because it was ported from x1,x2 (windows phones) and tweaked a bit. guys who have/had x1 or x2 know what im talking about
when sony finally makes new or updates camera app some problems might go away
Some camera problems are dued to picture softness. Camera360 automatically "improves" the quality with a focus filter, you should test it.

Camera problem: red/blue/purple noise in low light photos

Same story from M7 continues with M8. Taking pictures in low light has red/blue/purple noise/tint.

You can clearly see on video and picture heat shielding starts degrading, thus parts of the heat transfers to sensor.
Mine M8 produced in May 2014, serial number HT45.
Sensor is Omnivision OV4688 4M.
You can check sensor via file manager, no root is required.
For example, in Solid explorer:
Choose System Root - Sys - android_camera - sensor - open as - Text file - SE TextEditor.
Please report if you anyone has such issue.

I do not have this Problem.
So, idk why people should not buy HTC phones.
As if any other Phone is perfectly without any known issues
And no, having a definately Defect unit/device does NOT count as comparison or example.
Use your warranty, and let it repair / get exchanged for another device --> problem solved.
No magic unicorn will appear and fix it. Your camera sensor is defect, nothing more, nothing less. Thats what warranty is for.
Don't have this issue here and my phone gets HOT. This is also why we have warranties and insurance. Non htc phones break when dropped, run like crap, or have other issues like built like a mcdonalds toy.
This thread is a non issue in my book.
No issue here. If the M8 would have the same issue as the M7 did we would have heard of it by now from many more users. You just have bad luck I guess and got a bad unit.
It only happens when it's using an ISO of 3200.
When I set the ISO manually, even at 1600 there is no trace if it.

This is a "issue" with GAIN. If you take ANY sensor and maximise the gain (ISO) you will get more noise and these artefacts.
Even my DSL has the same problem with 12800 iso and total black. There will be dots and stuff all over the image. Especially with noise reduction on low or even dissabled.
ISO is just a mather of removing more or less noise from the sensory data. Consider it a radio, maximising the volume will make it hum and other things, stuff that you wont notice with sensible volume/gain. Nothing is free of noise and camera sensors are analog and take in noise and IR-radiation esp if the phone is warm. You can prevent this noise appearing but then you get worse performance in Low SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) situation - like dark images.

Last time i got my m7 replaced (about 3-4 months ago) this issue was fixed, so this problem would be gone with m8?
So anyone else having this issue? I was really interested in buying this phone.

This blue hue is in Galaxy S5 in very low light. Smartphone cameras have a limit. M7 had a genuine problem. M8 doesn't. Let's just STOP making up an issue when it isn't.

I guess that HTC went with the "if something isn't broken don't fix it" moto, cuz the only major improvement is the camera.
Another leaked video from Upleaks:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGvnyii8xlc
I think it's a fake... Look at the M9 when the guy is taking the photo to the girl: the phone has got a thick black stripe under the screen, while the one over the screen is very thin. Now watch the rest of the video: the upper strip is bigger, while the other is thinner... Oh cm on! And sorry for my bad english
Also these advertisements are really bad made... I'm not really sure they are true!
Really hope this isn't the m9. The black bar is just awful.
ho my god
it s an M8 again :crying::crying::crying:
I really dont get why all negativity, the M8's design is great and better than the competition in every part of the build. So why would HTC Change what yes ain't broken, the Camera is meh on the M8, so its now been improved, the performance if the M8 is anything to go by will be fantastic. There will be other things I'm sure that will change that mindset.
I honestly wasn't expecting huge changes in design and that's cool with me. I would safely assume the M10 or whatever the 2016 model may be will have that change.
I'm sure you'll all be happy when you purchase
I'm a bit disappointed in HTC, banging on the internet doors that they are bringing new things to MWC, just to show us a refresh/fix of the M8 (Yeah I know they will bring more stuff).
They better be calling it the HTC one 8.5 or something, because this isn't a number change worth.
I still think the M7 is a better looking phone then the M8, just because of the radius on the corners, and because the bottom and top speaker have the same width.
what a disappointment
Its not that bad lol I didn't mind how the m8 design was.

I'm not convinced this is the final version of the m9. With the leaks in the past few years, it's possible HTC is creating their own leaks to generate buzz. Regardless, I still love my m8 and am getting the m9 when my tax money arrives.?
I agree. I'm not sure it is real. Look at the poor editing, the screen images are not correctly aligned with the phones edges. Not the professional video I'd expect from HTC.

Sorry to burst your bubble guys but shown is known to do this, they are restricted and prohibited to release or leak the actual images of the up and coming mobile phones, it would defeat the purpose if unveiling it at the MWC.
Look what they did with last year's Galaxy s5
They thru everyone off on purpose to think Samsung had finally ditched the home button....
But no..
Right after the unveiling they quickly replaced the image with the accurate one. After all, all they really need are he sizes and the shape of the device, the font doesn't matter, it could look like mickey mouse and all they talk need to do is show off the case... the front has nothing to do with the case, the front camera or speakers have nothing to do with the case.... Nothing...

Hmm.... they didn't put attention to detail in this one. Check out the differences..
Well, what might actually be the case here is the picture on the left (the camera app) is actually taking the photo, the picture on the right is viewing the photo in the gallery app so the space on the top which would be the supposed bezel would simply be extra space as the picture isn't full screen.
Take that with a grain of salt, because that whole commercial doesn't really feel that 'professionally done'. It could just be graininess but when watching the screen you can almost tell that some cgi work was done on it.
Based on the this link from amazon the black bar with the HTC logo is gone

We're talking about the photo being different. The photo they zoom in on has obviously been retouched and was not taken with the M9 straight out of the camera.

Better utilization of the camera, the HTC m8 has a great camera, so does the m9 I'm sure. But it doesn't even compare when it comes to my old Nokia Lumia 920. Possibly partner up with Camera makers like Nokia did.

If that was the M9 it wouldn't even be a competition, although an RGB LED would be nice

This is what I really hoped it was going to be

But the renders were not from HTC, they were all fan-based. Why get your hopes up for something that had no official links?
This is my issue with people's reaction to the M9. Although I'm disappointed with the design I'm also not surprised. HTC need to recoup some money and saving money on design means they can continue to move forward. It's good business sense. Design is already great, so address the issues with the M8 and bump the internal spec
I kinda like the front facing speakers of the one. I've never used an htc but it still looks nice for a change as all the prev phones iv used had a speaker on the back. Anyway, I think what htc needs is a notification led something like the OGP. That would be sexy.

I agree with you a 100% and now they have a little more time to build next year's model... I bet it will be different next year, even though I hope it's not too different...

To be honest, I'm not even mad at HTC for black HTC bar either. It's not a big deal really.
Seriously guys, if you want BOOMSOUND, and I'm sure you do, you need to be okay with some sacrifices. Those things take some serious space on top and bottom.
And it doesn't even look that bad in my opinion. If they move it that's okay. If they leave it, that's okay. Same with the uncentered top speaker grill. It doesn't bother me. That being said, i wouldn't upgrade to the m9 from the m8, unless my m8 was broken. Which it is. I think the m9 is mainly targeted for m7 or onex/evo4glte users that never upgraded to the One series because if the 4up idea (which wasn't even as bad as it was made out to be). Which means... They should have had the camera software ready. If they do fix it, then great. but they are already losing customers because of the stuff going around about the"disappointing camera" gahh.
I'd say the best design change would be make the next either thinner, or don't have the camera protruding. That's about it. The phone is beautiful. They should make the HTC logo on the back stand out more. The two tone colors are nice, they should make the HTC lettering on the rear of the phone golden, too.

QUESTION:
you guys are wishing for an rgb notification led... whu? how were notifications provided on the M8?
I'm in a S3 and plan on the M9, but I'm surprised to hear this.
