How do you deal with limited storage? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Somehow based on my personal usage, I have found out that 32 gb, are not enough for me. I thought I found the perfect phone in LG g2. I am always deleting files.
Anybody left LG g2 because of limited storage? How do you deal with it?

I have never seemed to have this problem. I havent seemed to go above 16 gigs on my 32gig version. Do you have a lot of backups? I typically only have titanium backups, as i haven't been roming.

@albsat you are really using alot of storage. What you can do is buy an usb otg or an microsdreader otg.

Hi there.
I've the LG G2 16GB too. Always 8GB free.
Try to use clouds. It works super for me! ?
I've 4 clouds to store 1.photos 2.music 3.my docs 4.work related stuff.

It seems nobody keeps the roms in phone. Also o have two GPS apps with huge maps. I have 3 roms stored and that is a reason that my space is occupied. Also music, photos, WhatsApp or titanium. Just 2 gb free. But seriously I think 64 gb is my comfort zone. Too bad we don't have sdcard option.

Interesting. How does charging works then, if the USB port is occupied? Remove it always?!

@albsat well then you have to unplug it :/ but there are also usb otg's where you can also charge I believe. On my nexus 4 16GB that was not enough for me with roms but 32GB

I use an usb otg cable and keep stuff like rom zip, titanium backups and nandroid backups always on usb.
you can even nandroid directly to usb
also when I make huge videos I akways move them to usb in order to keep most internal storage free.
cloud storage is also an option if you have fast internet.

32 is the bare min nowadays but unless I gave games I'm always good

usb otg mostly. I download a lot on my phone, so having a storage to dump all the downloads is crucial for me. I'd like to have a mSD card support, but this is what we have.

Why would I? I have a USB stick + an OTG cable. Works great.

For the music part you can upload your music to google play and stream it. I have unlimited data so that works for me. It frees up a lot of space on my phone.

I personally use OTG, you must separate or split the files between primary files and not. Primary is file that you really need to access fast and frequently like worksheets, you need to put that Primary in your phone and the rest is on another storage device.

Could I use more storage? Of course... but 24ish gigs is enough for my most favorite music, lots of map stuff, and way too many apps.
All ROMs, kernels, and nandroids go on my OTG USB drive. http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-32GB-Traveler-MicroDuo-DTDUO/dp/B00IRUS7KU

I have an 16GB S3 with a 32GB SD Card. I have only used about 10GB combined, So I know for certain that if I end up buying a 32GB G2 ... it will be fine for me - well I hope haha.

After reading some experience here, I am thinking to buy a tiny otg usb. Primary option would to be a key chain. I am looking for it.

I saw it and I appreciate. But I meant a keyring, that I can tie it to the keys I keep in my pocket. Your link was a simple usb without a cord option. Or did I missed that, ?

I don't know that personally would do it, but it does have a small place you could hook something to. It's not very well shown in the pictures, but you can see it here.

What's the breakdown of the 16GB of memory?

Is it 8GB for os + apps and 8GB for media? Or maybe a new file system with Gingerbread that does not allow USB mass storage but all 16GB for os + apps + media?
It's most likely 1-2gb for apps and the rest for /sdcard/ this is how the Vibrant is.
You'll never fill up 2gb worth of apps...
So we are probably looking at roughly 14gb of available data stock? That's not that bad after all, most people are dealing with a 16gb microSD anyways. At least this will be faster... they should have made it 32gb or at least have the option... my heart is broken to have no removable storage (almost a deal-breaker)
It's not too terrible honestly. It's fully accessible when plugged into a PC. It's simply an internal SD card... Just copy the files off if you want them moved. No huge deal imho. Not that I wouldn't have preferred it to be external (bought a new 16GB class 4 for nothing)

Developers cite the lack of app memory as a reason why they don't port games to Android. I'm disappointed Google hasn't addressed this issue yet beyond Apps2SD, which only moves part of programs.
As a comparison, on my late iPhone 3G, I filled up 2GB in apps in a couple hours. Myst alone was around 700-800MB.

Err what? That's the point of the SD Cards. It is very easy for an game to download it's resources onto the SD Card... I own an iPad. Android and iPad do things differently. Both approaches work.
The Nexus S actually has two flash parts -- 512MB of onenand and 16GB emmc. The onenand hosts the bootloader, kernel/ramdisk, radio firmware, and the cache partition (yaffs2). The emmc part hosts /system (ext4), /data (ext4), and /sdcard (vfat).

I believe the /data partition which holds the apps(AFAIK) is about 1 GB from the screenshots.
very disappointing that over a year after the moto droid launches, we have moved to internal storage (which should give more room for more memory) and we are still stuck at 16gb
The galaxy S line works like this:
2GB /Data partition for apps
13GB /sdcard partition that acts exactly like an SD card.
The extra missing 1GB is most likely the system storage.
The storage for app is about 1GB. See screenshot from Engadget :
http://www.engadget.com/photos/google-nexus-s-hands-on/#3644046
See screenshot no. 45.
There you go, happy?
I think I am fine with it. Right now I am using HTC Desire with its pathetic 40MB storage for app. So, 1GB is a huge upgrade for me
Check Engadget, they explain that apps can be placed in the internal extra space to substitute for the lack of SD card, still not great but at least you know Google knew this would be an issue, and fixed it. Honestly, the market is full of great 3d games, if I were to download all of the great 3d games in the market, I would still have enough space on the device for my 5 gigs of music, they don't take that much space.
Well not only you lose external SD you also lose 1GB of internal application storage
GalaxyS has 2GB free of application storage
Nexus S only has 1GB
Seriously dont get all these cut backs
BTW the 13GB is same on both phones

Honestly, I would like it customizable. Like in a OS on a PC you can resize partitions with relative freedom. I would like to delegate what I want to app storage and general storage.

Swap with ICS?

Just wondering, is it better if I set up a swap now-a-days on ICS? I heard some rumors of swap fixing low mem. issues and reboots; mainly on TexasIce's thread. Also, is it ICS that is allowing our phone to use this swap if it does? Thanks for the help guys
We could have always used swap, but it wasn't really necessary for GB. ICS ran fine without swap for me so and I would rather not use it. Try it with and without and see what works best for you.
That's just the thing. I wanted to hear what others had to say because I did not want to have to go through the whole reformatting my SD for no true reason. I have over 20 gbs I would be having to transfer back over and I would have to deal with the slow SD transfer speeds of ICS. (And yes, I know it is a bit faster with 3rd party app or via recovery mounting).

I havn't tried the Multi Mount but how much of a pain is it to go to the recovery and mount from there, I have a class 10 SD and recovery mounting I can get about 15-20 mb\s, but while in rom i'm limited to probably 3-4, Ill have to try out multi mount though.
Okay cool, a violin. But this isn't about Multi Mount. A bit off topic now. I'll try it and report back my findings (swap, not the app).
I have repartition with swap, tried any ICS roms, but couldn't find any different with that of no swap. Need some wider explanations, too...

With texasice's ICS ROM, before he added his reboot-fix, almost everyone faced reboots because of out-of-memory errors. Now, however, there is little to no need of a swap partition.

After trying it out, I can +1 this now. ICS seems to work the same w/out swap, no performance increase. I just brought this topic up because it was mentioned and I wanted to test the myth to see if ICS actually worked fast/stable with a swap.
Conclusion: Myth / belief busted, swap will not increase performance / stability when running ICS. Thanks guys

Therefore, Deep Grey is the best.
And, for those of us with Unlimited Data on our rooted phones, WiFi only is best.
I like the white 16gb. Just pop in a 64/32GB memory card and your good to go
A grey, 32gig with a 64gig card in it (like mine, for example ) is even gooder to go. And, really, compared to other tablets, an extra 16gig internal for $50 is a bargain.
Plus, don't forget that without rooting, you can only install apps to the internal memory, so 16gig could become a problem.

You do know that the external memory card is good only for storing pics, videos, datas, doc etc. but most apps if not all specially games which eats a lot of space can only be installed on your pecious internal storage so having at least 32gb. Internal is a plus.

To be honest, white looks cleaner and better on video and in pictures; however, when I went to the stores to check it out, deep gray also looked okay (I think I just prefer gunmetal gray over .. the blueish gray that it is) and kind of pretty as well.

There are all brands of these key USB drives. You won't have problems finding them on Amazon. And the prices are everywhere. It's crazy that the same 32Gb capacity from China is $12, and from LaCie is $75. I have several LaCie 32 giggers but I don't remember paying that much for them. They're extremely reliable durable (but slow to write to) -- I've had them in the washing machine a few times.
Here's a better idea. Instead of getting a drive like this, then having to carry around the Pixel dongle, I'm going to get a USB C flash drive instead. It's cheaper. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MQGP3LX/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Yea I was actually planning on getting the SanDisk dual USB-C flash drive. I liked the idea of having something really durably on my keychain though. This looks to be the best for usbC flash drive.

I just wouldn't wanna keep it on my keychain and your key one looked more durable... But then again the key snapped ones I saw had the circuit stuff exposed completely so maybe this would be better since it's the normal USB rectangle plus it slides in

I could potentially buy a used Pixel C in good condition very cheaply (100-200 $), is it still worth it?
Especially considering that it probably will not receive any further software updates. How is it about security patches and everything?
Well...
It got dropped by Google on July of this year, without even getting a notice, or anything like that.
You can still get up to date ROMs here, from followmsi mostly, he did 15.1, 16.0, that he stopped supporting.
Now he is mainly working on the 17.0 version, with still his custom kernel expertise and work to get everything working...
The tablet is still a beast, especially if you push the Tegra X1 to its maximum official clock of 1912MHz, far more than the Switch 3rd revision for example
Does the pixel c have any deal-breaker issues like the nexus 9 tablet did, like killing apps as soon as they're in the background?

Hi. Did you buy the pixel C recently? I am thinking about getting one. I own a pixel 4XL and wondered how these two mesh together. Any ideas would be very grateful. Thanks.
Marco
I received mine last week and so far it has been pretty smooth. I installed Lineage 17 and tegra 3.18 kernel and haven't had any issues with the WiFi so far. Came with a folio keyboard and it's the 64GB model. I wish it had better performance for games tho, but as an everyday basic use tablet. It is worth it to me, been wanting to get this tablet for a very long time despite it's issues.
does pixel c tablet offer unlimited storage for photos and videos like pixel phones?

The price is good but no SD card slot. Google wants to force you to go cloud. Their Firebase cloud crap sucks elephant balls bad. The cloud garbage sucks up battery, bandwidth, privacy and cpu cycles.
With SD card capacities up to 1 tb and fast 512 gb cards going for $75, no cloud anything is needed. I can do a full reload (with no data loss) on a stock Samsung with little or no internet connection needed because I'm using the SD card as a dedicated data drive.
The SD card makes the phone a dual drive computer... outstanding.

I hear you. The problem is Google is squirrelier than a rabid weasel. Invariably they will drop features, products no matter how good they are.
Never trust Google platforms... they live for the day and not for you.
Save yourself future aggravation and find a stable platform for your photos now.
anyway - is there an owner of a pixel C that can confirm or deny the unlimited storage for photos and videos?
