Question re: OIS in video mode - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On my Note 2, using image stabilization effectively crops the video frame, which lowers the overall quality and results in this annoying zoom. With the OIS that's in the NOTE 4, do we get the full frame?

I saw that video, but it doesn't show the full frame of the image, so there's no way knowing what's going on with it. I can only assume that you'd be getting the full frame with OIS.

Thanks! The OIS looks amazing!

This probably means we finally get stabilization in 4K video mode!

That would be great but I'd also like live hdr in 4k

Note 4 doesn't have 4k, it has UHD, which has SLIGHTLY less pixels than 4k.

Whatever, give me ois and live hdr in the highest quality mode.
Sent from my SM-G900H using Tapatalk

The OIS is mechanical on the note 4 so shouldn't where as on the note 2 it is software generated which is why it crops

Uh-oh. This doesn't seem good.
This korean user: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mdneth_AKKA has acquired a Note 4. I questioned them about OIS in "4K" (2160p, UHD, whatever) video mode, and it looks like the OIS doesn't function in 4k or 1440p mode - very puzzling since the OIS is mechanical.

It looks great to me. but again the OIS should work when the phone is steady and the object is running fast in front of the camera. The blurry parts is because the camera cant focus because its moving
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA Free mobile app

I'm not sure if that's what you meant but ois cannot compensate for subject motion. Only camera motion is corrected by the system. Subject motion needs fast AF and shutter speed.

Perhaps this is dependant on Exynos / Snapdragon? The korean user has a Exynos device, while the test devices at IFA were snapdragon.
That said, I don't see how the SoC could affect OIS.

Played with a Note 4 at Best Buy today OIS was available in 4k mode. HDR, and I forgot different feature was not available, due to Happy Hour.

So this option?
If so, then it could be a exynos thing. That's really annoying, as I know New Zealand is getting the Exynos version. I might have to import a snapdragon version from somewhere, but then it won't have the LTE bands that the exynos one does.

OIS WORKS!
Ok guyz, the problem with OIS was clearly a misunderstanding probably to the lack of more testing the device. Now that man has revised what it said, OIS definitely works:fingers-crossed:
Here is what he exactly said : "" I had good amount of time to play with the video recording features and I want to revise my original impressions. So optical stabilization is always on and it is absolutely fantastic when you compare it to the Note 3 which had no stabilization. Sometimes you forget how shakey your hands really are until you go back to the older device without it. OIS handles pans beautifully, and you can even walk with it if you have stable hands whereas if you tried to walk with the software stabilization on the note 3 (or even walk with the OIS on a SLR camera), it just doesn't work much at all. You can additionally turn on a feature called "video stabilization" but it's only good for still video shots and like the galaxy notes before it, it crops the image.
In short OIS is better than awesome, the "video stabilization" feature is only for still video shots.
Another thing I was to revise is that yesterday, I was out and trying our HDR video at night and everytime I turned on HDR, it would crop the image. However, playing with it further today during daytime, HDR doesn't crop the image. Although I was certain that I didn't have video stabilization enabled, it seems like user error on my part.
And to answer your question WQHD is supported on both the front and rear cameras. Other than HDR being limited to 1080p (I read a lot of places that HDR works on 4K on the S5, I guess they were wrong), I'm really happy with the camera.
Last, I took a photo and uploaded the 7MB to my dropbox. Please check the photo out on my twitter or Google + page that's linked to this channel. The image is pretty darn impressive.""

how to improve camera quality

Hi ,
can you please tell me , how to improve camera quality in Nexus 4 please.
Buy a camera.
No really, what do you expect to really "improve"? It's a smartphone camera.
Though had you tried to search you would've noticed a thread that kind of improves the quality slightly (never tested it myself)
But please don't expect to make good pictures, it will remain a smartphone camera
Well ok, might be I'm wrong - can't find a thread for that
But I do recall something that said to improve camera - could've been video capturing though

There are some good photography apps in the appstore you can try
the truth is the camera hardware is not that great on the nexus 4.
always remember that to take a great photo it doesnt necessarily always need a good camera

quality is fine. its on your end that you will have to improve photo taking. make sure there is plenty of light for the photo that you want to take, or it will come out blurred. play with the camera settings if need be.

I agree my comment was rather not helpful but you have to admit: Nexus 4 camera is known to be mediocre at best. You can make good pictures with plenty of light, especially with HDR - but nevertheless the camera won't make really good pictures. (Way better pictures than Desire HD 8MP camera though but that's not really a surprise)
To try to be helpful: I still recall some thread where someone changed some files to improve quality of photos and or videos. But I can't even find it anymore :silly:
Just to show what I see as a good picture by Nexus 4, here's a picture of two rainbows And a nice picture of the sun.
But as example for a bad picture: the cockpit of the Mercedes Benz Sprinter, which was taken while there was no light and this picture really looks bad

Well, one small suggestion would be that you could mount it on a small tripod or other device that you can carry around. That would help stabilize it, so the photos and videos aren't as shaky.

Nice find. Looks promising. Way better than S5 in this regard.
I think the S6 camera is going to be a winner. I hate using the camera on my S4. I try not to use it anymore, because I know the picture is going to be blurry, unless I'm outside.
Just the camera makes it already my next phone
I love the double-tap to launch camera, but won't that create lag in all single-click scenarios? Since the phone is briefly waiting (e.g., .5 seconds) to field a potential second click, it cannot assume that the first click is a command to go to the home screen. Accordingly, rather than going instantly to the home screen, it will always lag ever so slightly. I seem to remember something like this with S-Voice on my S3, which I had to disable because I couldn't stand the lag it created. You can definitely see the lag in the first video @ 1:33.

If someone is not understanding german :
This guy is really excited about the cameras picture quality and quickness in lowlight conditions. He said that samsung created the best smartphone camera he has ever seen (also in comparison to the iphone6 and note4). He compared the note 4 cam with the s6 cam and the result is, that s6 cam is faster!

Bummer, I answered my question above. There is, in fact, a lag when pressing the home button if you enable the "double-tap to launch camera" option. The phone has to wait to field a potential second click and thus delays before bringing you to the home screen when you single-click the button. See here at 11 min 37 sec, where the reviewer specifically tests for the lag:

If you have 'double-tap to open an app' as an option, there will be certain delay when you single-tap. It was same with S-Voice previously, now camera.
The most obvious sequence here would be like (with double-tap enabled):
User presses Home button -> The system receives the input and waits to check if there is another tap input -> (If) there is no further tap within a specific 'threshold', it takes you to Home screen -> (If) it records another tap within specific threshold, it opens camera/another app as designed.
So, the option for Samsung could be to reduce the threshold time. Now the benefit will be that it will go to Home screen faster if we don't double tap. Negative will be that, if we intend to double-tap, we will have to do it faster. Could also effect long term reliability of Home button. They need to consider all possible consequences.
If double-tap to open camera (any app) is disabled:
User presses Home button -> Take you to Home screen.
Plain obvious that this will be faster.
It better to allow individuals to decide what they want.

I'm not exactly happy with the camera. Quite disappointed tbh..
Here's what I noticed. Please confirm if you notice the same behavior on your devices or if it's just me.
1. The UI and the whole functionality in general is just quite primitive.. For one, the front/back switch button should be at the bottom where you can easily reach it using one hand. Like on the S7.
2. Snapping a picture isn't fast and instant. I found many times that the camera takes about a second to fine tune focus THEN it takes the snap then it asks to keep the device steady for sharpening. Even if it didn't do that, it still takes a moment after pressing the snap button to actually take the shot. This is what bugs me the most about the camera.
3. Why does recording video have to take an extra tap and, therefore, more time? Why isn't it as easy as tapping a record button on the main viewfinder screen?
4. I found pictures to be extremely dull. Colors are sad.. washed out.
5. "image adjustment" is quite a joke. Changing the values either explodes up or murders image features. For example trying to fix dull colors results in either extremely dead pictures or extremely punched out colors.
6. Even if I did accept the resulting changes from "image adjustment", I found that after a while it resets itself and I have to set it again...!
7. "AF Auxillary Light" option in pro photo mode never stays turned off. If I choose to turn it off, it should stay off.
8. I was told there was a vertical panorama mode where you can take panoramic shots of long buildings for example. Can't find it.
I do like how sharp the images are. Even compared to the S7, pictures preserve much more details. Something that often shows clearly when pixel peeping. Although, the dull colors that need post adjustment and the sluggish slow snapping just takes away all the fun, luxury and efficiency.
My toughs in Low light conditions:
i have a S6 edge and a normal S6 and both phones takes better pictures in almost all situations in comparation with the honor in auto mode....sadly...
to make good pictures like my S6 I have to go in pro mode in the Honor 8 and make adjustments and even so, in the 40% of time the S6 wins in sharpness, detail in low light conditions...
most of the time I need 1 picture in the Samsung and 4 or 5 tries in the Honor to mach the picture in the Samsung.
good camera but for me but if you came from a samsung s6/s7 you will strange the honor 8.
in the color accuracy I think that the honor is more true colors..
the main problem for me in the honor 8 is the lake of OIS, the pictures, especially in low light conditions are most of the time, out of focus...
the camera app, I think that is no good for take pictures in auto mode...
in outdoors:
In 90% of the cases, Honor is the the winner for me.
Better colors, better contrast, better details overall...

LG G6 users, is the camera a lot better than the Note 4?

Hi folks, heading out today to get an LG G6 to replace a Note 4. I've really enjoyed the note 4's camera, still takes excellent shots.
Is the LG G6 camera setup a whole lot better? A lot better? A bit better? l'm sure someone out there knows
Thanks for any comment... Cheers!:highfive:

I had the Note 4, which yes had a great camera, that being said, for me, the G6 is appreciably better IQ wise, especially in lower light, F1.8 really helps. See the attached photo at 1200 iso which I think is really impressive and way beyond what the Note 4 would have achieved IQ wise at 1200 iso. And another more normal photo with great detail. That's my 5 cents, hope it helps.

Very nice! I'm a sucker for flower and pet pictures- Love shooting 'em around the house :highfive:
These were from my old note 4, but will have the LG G6 tomorrow.
Caught me a bee at work in the first one. The closeup shot you got was really sharp and good looking.
I love it for the most part. The wide angle sucks if you're taking landscape shots. Stupidly panorama can't be done with the camera IMO the correct orientation. It has to be held up and down. Can't hold phone side ways. That's my only gripe honestly.
With a clip on macro lens
the wide angle is actually fine, one must remember its getting almost double the scene with the same 13 mp hence the photos looking softer (less detail), take your P&S camera and take a photo at 45/50mm and then zoom out to 24mm while standing at the same place and take another photo then look at each at 100% you'll see exactly the same thing, same amount of megapixels covering a lot more info...
Hi
I got a new LG G 6 4 days back.
The picture quality is pathetic. Its blurry and pixelated 99.99% pictures clicked in all conditions are going wrong, day light, artificial, auto manual, dual cam, single cam.
any idea what is wrong.
I have read many reviews and videos and am sure that pic quality is bound to be better but unable to figure out.
Currntly using PIXEL XL and iphone 6s.

There is something wrong with your G6 if that is the case.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Asus Zenfone 5V come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Bokeh is great and the best is the second camera being a wide angle lens. This is amazing for landscape!
Score to dxomark= 90 so very good APN.

Gcam for zenfone 5Z?
Hi guys! I find that the stock camera is ok in the daylight. During the night or without much lights there is a lot of distortion (which is, of course, quite popular for every smartphone). So I want to try Gcamera for the 5Z.

Well, with Gcam you can take awesome pictures in daylight and low light conditions, but during night ASUS camera is better (especially awesome if you have a tripod).

You need this gcam: GCam from BSG v. 5.2.022_1.0
Unfortunately you can't use the wide angle camera with GCam.

The main camera is okay. The wide angle lens is quite poor in quality. I tried both. The wide angle lens has noticeable pixelation on the sides like it's a photo quality from a 2012 flagship. Kinda disappointed with it actually.
Wide angle one is also good in quality...not like the primary camera but still wide angle camera held it's own

Potrait mode producing picture with absurd hue
Anyone notice the zf5 front camera doesn't have AF feature ? or is it just mine ? and it's super over exposure makes it quite laggy
Previously I was iPhone user, if i compare the camera ZF5 have too much artificial intelegent smoothing retouch on human skin even when I'm not using beauty mode and it's kinda fake in compare to my iPhone 6
Go to camera settings and verify that 'continuous AF' option is checked.
I have tried almost every G cam available but all gives tint-blue/purple colour. I have also tried Gcams for OP6 with tint fixes but they force close in my asus zenfone 5z. Any help ?

I haven't noticed anything in camera after the recent update (build ww_80.11.37.95.20180727), it was just a 65mb OTA. Everything still same except battery life. Battery backup seems to be screwed, not sure if there was some bug.
