[Q] Google Now and always listening - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear all,
I would like to hear from you about Google Now shortcut and "always listening" feature like we find on Moto X. I'm tempted about Moto X price/specs but I'm kind of disapointed about his camera and would like to know if is there a way to use those features (always listening with google now) on Note 4.
I read about some tweaks with Tasker killing S-Voice and lauching Google Now instead but I'm searching for a more "natural" alternative.
Is there any chance to get this on note 4?

Nova Launcher allows you to enable that on any phone, and I am enjoying it on my M8
If its not "default" on the note4, I will just enable it that way..

Thank you wase4711, have you noticed a big battery impact?
Edit: I just tried on my friends phone, it only work with the screen on right?

well, I have had it activated almost from the first day I had my M8, so not sure what the battery impact is..my battery still lasts all day, which is what I expect from any modern flagship phone..
and yes, it only works when the phone screen is on, but I use gravity screen anyways, so once I pick up my phone, the screen comes on anyways.
I will be curious to see how the newest version of S Voice works on the Note 4..

Yes only when screen on. There is an app (don't remember it's name, just google it) that enables it when screen is off, but that will drain a lot battery.

Thank you. I think you may reffering the OpenMic+ and I agree with you, it seems that will really kill the battery.

there is option inside Google Now for listening but yeah when screen off it doesn't work...
+ if you want exactly same app like what is on moto X devs can port that app for other phones...
(if i buy Note4 I will try to do this )

Unfortunately, It seems that is not just port the app. If I understood well reading AnandTech review and other posts on this thread the responsible for "always listening" is a dedicated CPU from Texas Instruments called C55x. Using openMic or any other tweak without the proper hardware is just a dirty solution.

if there s specific hardware for it yeah port app won't work... and just try create another app like this with optimized dirty solutions...!
but the always listening was part snapdragon800 (if remember correctly at moment) ..........

Till two or three days ago I thought the same, that's why I didn't understand the reason no other brand (sony, samsung...) was implementing the 'always listening' since they use the same SoC. But according to others, the c55x is the reponsible for this and not the S801/S805.

"Always-on" function gone and replaced by "From any screen". Why?
When you go to the settings of Google Search/Voice/OK Google Detection/
one should see the "Always-on" option.
I used to have it, but right now it´s gone and got replaced by "From any screen". I don´t know how that happened.
The problem is, "From any screen" doesn´t work when the display is OFF.
The "Always-on"-function does work also when the display is OFF.
I already re-installed Google Search, but that didn´t help either.
Anyone got an idea how to get the "Always-On"-function back?

Language and input/voice search/audio history set to ON/OK Google detection/
I hope it will help.

Done that already a few times.
The problem is not that it doesn´t recognize the voice, the problem is that I can´t get it to work when the screen is OFF. It works fine when the screen is on.

turn off bluetooth
set up S-voice completely
open google search, go to settings, google now
turn everything on, retrain it to recognize your voice, also turn on work from any screen
turn off your screen and try it again
what rom are you on?

Done all that already. But I don´t think that "turn on work from any screen", will help anything because this function works only when the screen is ON.
But I want GoogleVoice to work also when the screen is OFF.
Does it work on your device, Wase4711?

i cant find it....
after playing x-plane, my g-sensor is all messed up, and theres no way i can find to re-calibrate it, none of the bubble level apps work
I was playing Drive with Zombies and it pulled hard right. Restarting the app several times and the bubble level had no effect.
Finally I tried laying it flat on the table and starting the game. Problem solved.
I'm resurrecting this thread, temple run is tilted to the right and its annoying, my nexus is stock but this no g sensor calibration is bugging me.

Well, thanks for the idea, but that will not work - I checked (I have similar problem on my Nexus 7) - The GPS Status APPs does not recalibrate the G-Sensor system, it only "recalibrates" how it interprets the g-sensor output for its own purposes, so the recalibration does not affect any other applicatons
You can check that deleting stored data for GPS Status app wil also resets the way it represent the G-Sensor data...
maybe there is some other way how to fix the G-sensor?

Strange, because I was having an issue with my N7 pulling to the left on games, installed GPS status and did the calibration and haven't ever had the problem again. Even after reboots, it's still fine... You got me, but what ever it did, mines all good now.

Well, good for you... I have read some reports that the sensor come to "senses" in special circumstatnces like keeping the tablet on flat surface when running faulty apps and so on, but none of them worked for me.. it any app i able to calibrate the sensor for itself, then it is fine for it, but other apps that can not do the calibration are not affected at all

if only someone would sell 32GB N7 in my country, I would gladly change it
Ok, I will try to look for other solution..., thank anyway..
EDIT: I think have just found solution: when I calibrated the sensor using App "Sensor tester" (yes, there are several apps of that name, but only one is working on my N7 and has calibration available), then ALL sensor testing apps (including GPS status) sees the G-sensor corectly calibrated, and it works even in the game that caused all my troubles. And also, it does not matter whether or not is that sensor app running - I stopped it and deleted its data and it is still working fine!

In the APP menu select "other avaliable sensor", then select "MPL Accelerometer type: ACCELEROMTER " (it is actually a bit longer sentence). Then again, open the APP menu and there will be buton labeled "Calibrate" which will take you through the rest of the process...

oh boy, it seem that the problem is baack again:
I restarted my Nexus 7 (I was experimenting with USB host, but that does not belong here), and now the G-sensor it is back in its previous (misscalibrated) state, and this time, the "Sensor tester" app is not helping I even tryed several other apps, but nothing is helping this time, and I can not find what is different this time (restart)... :crying:
EDIT: hmm... today, I tried again, and now it is working (???). I do not know why it did not worked last time... If every application that uses g-sensor would also contain calibration settings for its own use, world would be so much nicer place...

Google Now voice commands

Hi,
Recently i've been having problems with some of Google Now's voice commands. Prior to the Google Now update last week I was able to set myself reminders using my voice i.e "Remind me that dinner is ready in 20 minutes" - This would then set an alarm on my phone to remind me in 20 minutes time.
However when I use that same command now, it saves a "note" instead and does not remind me.
I've also noticed that some of the other commands I used to use (Play, Listen to, Navigate To etc) now result in a Google Search instead.
Wondered if anyone could help?
Same issue here.
I used google now for boiling eggs. For instance, telling Now to "set alarm in 8 minutes" would alarm me in 8 minutes.
What it does now is it sets an alarm at 8pm, titled "minutes". This actually made me overcook my eggs yesterday, haha.
I cleared the app's cache but to no avail. I haven't bothered clearing the app data. This probably is the new way this command is handled, and I hope they will revert it. By the way, do you happen to have Google Keep installed? I'm thinking that the note-setting may be related to that...

Yeah I downloaded Google Keep a few days before the commands stopped working. I'll try uninstalling it now and see if that makes a difference. If it is the new way the command is handled, I hope Google revert it back to the old way.

That didn't fix it for me, though. d'awwww
All good for me. "set reminder to ... at 9 o'clock tonight' set an alarm with almost the right description. I'd like it better if it went into tasks instead though and set a reminder alarm.
"Set timer for 1 minute" also set an alarm for 1 minute from current time.

Prevent screen off while charging

Hi all,
For the life of me, I couldn't find a setting to prevent my screen from turning off while charging, a feature I was used to on earlier android phones. It's particularly useful since I have my One in a desktop dock frequently, and want to have the screen on constantly.
Thankfully, I found a solution in an app called "Keep Screen On," which does exactly what it says and has an option to keep the screen on while charging.
Hope this helps anyone in a similar situation!

Screen does not go off while using certain applications like Navigation, music etc. It is now more application dependent
It def doesn't stay on during music playback. Atleast not using Play Music. I keep having to turn the screen back on when I want to change albums when I'm plugged in in my car. Nav I'm unsure. Been awhile since I've used it. I'll check when I leave for work.
Wish they didn't take the option away.

Yes it is true it does not stay awake in Google Play music. I can confirm that screen is on in following applications:-
1. Phone docked in HTC Car dock and HTC car dock application running. Any application running in car dock mode
2. In Google navigation
3. In Sygic navigation
4. In HTC Music application while it is playing in visualization mode
5. Itunes has inbuilt setting to keep phone awake while music is playing
Similarly all applications requiring phone to be awake like youtube etc while playing will keep screen on.
I dock phone during commute in HTC Car dock with Car dock application running and phone is always awake. On office deck also I dock the phone in HTC car dock and play music in visualization mode to keep phone awake.
In case your are not using HTC official car dock, see if activating car dock application and then playing music through Google play music will keep the screen on.

[Q] Volume changes sporadically on AT&T Galaxy S5 - can I log changes?

Hello,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 bought through AT&T, and the volume (ringer/system volume from silent to vibrate to loud and vice versa) seems to change sporadically on its own. I'm unable to identify the cause. I put the phone into safe mode, and as far as I know, it doesn't change the volume on its own when in safe mode, so I have reason to believe it's from an app I installed. I currently have Volume Locker installed as a temporary solution. This problem never happened on my Galaxy S3 through AT&T, with no different apps installed after upgrading. I do not have any apps that change the volume profile.
Question: is there a way I can log (in real-time) volume changes and also the apps that put in the request for these changes?

I've never hear of an app like that, but it's most likely turning on in your pocket. The S5 has very high tough sensitivity so even in your pocket it can change things without you knowing.

I thought the same thing too, but I've left my phone completely alone, and it'll still switch sound modes on its own. It has to be an app.
Anyone have any ideas on this app business or logging? In Developer options, there's a setting where I can turn on OpenGL traces...could this possibly monitor actions? I have no idea how to use it and don't know what it does.

I tried posting my app list after getting it from the app you recommended, but I keep getting the error message: We are sorry, your post was flagged by our system and was blocked from submitting. If you believe this was in error, please contact an admin to report this.
I sent an email to the developer of the website, so hopefully s/he will get back soon.

This is a quick guide to show how to enable the smart call feature included in some versions of the Note 7, according to the website. Learn more about smart call feature here: http://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/apps/smart-call/
First download quick shortcut maker from the Play Store.

What is this supposed to do? I looked it up and on Samsungs description page it's totally different. I haven't seen any difference with this.
Something else must be missing.
I had it enabled for days with no effect
Would really like to see this work

This did not work for me. Then today I was poking around in the settings and got it to work. I went into Applications in settings and then in the top right enabled system apps. I scrolled down to smart caller ID and clicked it. I went to permissions and enabled contacts.
Anyway an hour later I got a call from a family member from their home phone. I do not have this persons name saved in my phone. It said their first, last, and middle initial right on the screen. I was like wow it's working. So naturally I went into package disable pro and turned it off LOL. I tested it again with the same caller and this time it didn't show their caller ID, only their phone number. I tried to re enable the feature and have not been able to get it back since. If someone can try these steps and see how it works, maybe we can figure it out.
Kept messing with settings and it started working again. Rebooted and it went away.
My phone doesn't even have smart caller ID in the app manager area. I did follow the OP and enabled it so we'll see. I'm not rich hopeful but we'll see

Mine doesn't have that in applications. Not even after enabling system apps. Must be third party installed app you have there.
Okay use the app from the OP and search for "smart" and smart caller ID will show up. Click it and then create. Then on the home screen click the newly created shortcut and it should enable permissions for smart caller ID. Then try.
I've tried it multiple ways and I don't see a "smart caller" anything either. Total crap Verizon! Any way someone can extract it?

See attached.
Seh6183, I know what "Smart Caller" looks like and is spelled lol. It's simply not existing on my phone. Same app, same search....

Looks like they really stripped the Verizon variant down. I have a request out in the international forums to have someone give me their phone apk. Hopefully someone responds.
