PS4 Remote Play With Sony Xperia Z3 - Xperia Z3 General

Hey Guys and Gals
So we know the Sony Xperia Z3 features PS4 Remote play, anybody going to be grabbing one for this purpose?
It would be great to get the PS4 Remote play feature ported to other devices, lets see what our great developers can do

It's a nice feature and I do plan to pick up a PS4 in the future so it works for me.
Realistically, I probably won't use it much.... perhaps only if I really want to play my game and watch TV/streams at the same time.

I'd honestly love remote play for non games. Eg watching blu ray extras (or even just listening to commentaries). Stuff I can't really be bothered using the full home theatre for. I mean I used to use my PSP for remote playing PlayTV recordings on my ps3

Really interested in this. Hopefully someone can bring it to non Sony devices if Sony doesn't or takes it sweet time doing so.

It's pretty much the only reason I'm considering this phone. Otherwise I'd get a Vita and keep my GS4. Already have a Nyko mount on my PS4 controller (IGN/SMS, no streaming) the GS4

Let's hope Dev's help out owners of other phones so they can enjoy this feature... Sony have stated though that this is exclusive to Sony phones, the newer ones in particular and they won't be making it compatible with other handsets. You can never say never though I guess, personally I can't wait to get a Z3 when I get paid, even though I've only recently bought a Nexus 5 lol

This is the thing I own.

I own the PS4 (Destiny pack) and now the Z3. I don't know how to use remote play? Same Wi-Fi access?
By the way, someone at Sony told me that the official DualShock 4/Z3 smart clip will be released in November.

I have both the Z3 and PS4 destiny too
Unfortunately the proper PS4 remote play app has not been released yet. Yes you can use the Playstation App for second screen etc in the meantime like other smartphones but the remote play feature isn't due until november.

I see, they announced this feature but it's not available yet. Too bad :silly:

This appears to be a neutered version of Remote Play in comparison to what is offered through the Vita. I say this because it sounds as if Remote Play will only work at home on the same WiFi network as your PS4, not over the internet like the Vita's Remote Play offers? Is this true? If so, has the genius Android user base found a way to work around this yet? To me the feature is completely useless if it only works at home, if I am at home I will use my PS4 on a TV.

Why would you even think about serious gaming over 3G or 4G? - The latency will be so high it will just be too much of a lag-fest for it to be playable (I've tried with my Vita and its pants even over Wifi with my PS4 being on fibre optic internet).
The main difference here is that you can use a Dualshock 4 pad with remote play - its the main thing that put me off vita for remote play - them stupid touch buttons underneath had to be used.
As long as Sony make it work properly it will be more than worth the wait - Destiny in bed lol

Oh I am not wanting to play games online with it, just offline stuff.

@zoomee
Dont try to describe lagging, most of them dont understand.

Im afraid we can only use this remote feature when our bootloader is locked with all drm features.
PS Vita has to less power for remote play, it lags a little, using L2 and R2 buttons suck and the screen quality is bad.
The remote play feature was my reason to buy a Z3.

As far as I know, they said the same thing about remote play on the vita. It isn't officially supported, but it works fine. No reason to think it won't be the same on the Z3.

So anybody any idea when it will become available? Just read this morning that firmware update 2.0 for the PS4 will come out on the 28th of October. Hopefully the remote play app will be released as well.

Just in case you have doubts about latency, low frame rate, etc.

That would be great, hopefully someone can confirm this soon.

Does anyone have the game control mount thingy? I ordered it from amazon on the 8th October and it's still out of stock to this day.....

I ordered one from Petra a few weeks ago when they had some in Stock. It works well

[Q] School an old fart on using game emulators

After seeing the Six Axis thread, I was thinking of getting on of those controllers to start playing some games from the past on my tab. I see in the "Working Apps" thread there are a slew of different emulators based on what console you're trying to emulate. So, question 1: Is there a emulator that is some what of a one-does-all?
Second question: Do I rely on the market for game ROMs? Or are roms one of those topics where they're illegal and I must RTFM where ever I can find them?
Third question: Are ROM formats pretty much universal? For example, if there are two different NES emulators out there, will ROMs be in a format where I can only play it on a certain emulator?
If all of this is covered, please feel free to call me an idiot, and kindly redirect me, as I didn't find anything immediately covering emulators for a 31 year old "newb" as far as emulators are concerned.
The closest to an "all in one" emulator is MAME, which can emulate a variety of 80's/90's arcade machines. Otherwise, you're looking at different emu's for each machine type.
ROMs are illegal unless you own the original, which is unlikely. You won't get any of these on the Android market but they're easily findable with a little googling.
ROM images all use universal formats appropriate to what they're emulating. All emu's will read this standardised format. A Commodore 64 game ROM will work on and Commodore 64 emulator but obviously, is different to a game ROM for a Commomdore Amiga, for example.
And don't worry, we don't call people with sensible questions, idiots.
You nailed everything on the head I was looking for. I am very fmailiar with MAME (concept of it anyways), but I always reserved to using the term MAME when talking about making your own MAME with like a full TV, PC and such... is there a "MAME app"? I'll likely go the route of a different emulator for each console, and I have access to a private site with tons of games, I just never bothered looking to see if the format was a standard. Thanks a million! I think I just got a little nerd chub. Cant wait to play Legend of Zelda again.
Hehe, there IS a MAME app for Android, should be on the market somewhere.
Emulation on Android hasn't yet reached the stability of emulation on PC's, (especially when it comes to MAME) but it's off to a good start. Search the Market for MAME4droid - its based on quite an early version of MAME, and unfortunately there are more non-working ROM's than working ones. If you're willing to just use your PC, there is an emulator frontend called Maximus Arcade which is often used in emulator cabinets. It is a frontend that has support for several different emulators, so you just need to choose the system, and then you will see your list of games. You'll need to get a different emulator for each system, then configure Maximus Arcade so it knows where to find them. Just google it, there's tons of useful documentation on the subject. I'm a bit of a self proclaimed emulation expert, so feel free to ask more questions, either here or by PM
Its been a dream of mine to one day build a mame cabinete, so maybe I'll hit you up if that ever comes to be. Thanks for the info. I may still look that up as my primary pc is an htpc already connected to my tv. Thanks!

Yeah, I know what you mean. My best friend and I are currently working on such a project. We put $35 into an older used P4 tower and $40 for a 19" CRT (supporting 2048x1536!!!) so after only $75, we've already tackled a big part of it. By the time we get some wood to build a cabinet, an X-Arcade Tankstick (look this up, it's sweet!) and a few other little things, we'll have about $500-600 invested into the cabinet, and the resale value of the complete unit would be about $300-400 more, but selling is the last thing on our minds. At this point, we've mainly worked on the software end, but it's been a lot of fun. Even after the pain and frustration of dealing with MAME (it can be quite picky), it's quite rewarding when everything finally falls together. I just can't wait to build the actual cabinet!
So, the SixAxis app only works on rooted devices, which counts me out since IO have updated to the OTA 3.2 and really don't want to bother with downgrading and all that jazz. There is another app, USB/BT Joystick, that says it works with many controllers. I really like the PS3 Dual Shocks, but the app says the wireless PS# controllers will be supported soon. The wireless joysticks have a micro USB plug for charging, but can the USB plug also be used as a wired connection?

Go to tmart.com there wired remotes are a lil over 10 dollars and ship from NY, takes about 5 days to show up.
Sweet, ordered, thanks!
OK, so after next week, I'll have the following, let me know if this setup sounds about right
- 15 foot HDMI cable: I've had this and know it works flawlessly hooked up to my receiver, so no problems here
- Ordered a wired PS3 controller from tmart.com at the suggestion of cmlucht
- Was going to try and use the USB/BT Joystick Center app to map the keys
- SNESoid app for emulation
- And a TON of SNES games
Should have my controller next Wednesday. If anyone else has no other suggestions, I should be rocking SNES games on my TV in a week. I am friggin nerdin out here.
did did you get to pick your free gift from tmart? Sometimes they give a free gift with orders, I buy all my green and blue lasers and my sons 360 stuff in there and my ps3 controller.
You got me all excited, but I just went back through all the emails I've gotten so far from tmart and did not have anything mentioning a free gift. Oh well, I'll consider the great price a gift.
Got my a500 on a stand with an HDMI cable and Xbox 360 wired controller and it works fine. portable SNES.
Ugh, didn't check my mail yesterday, and now I checked the tracking from work today and see the controller was delivered yesterday . Have to wait a few hours and check it when I take my lunch. I feel like a kid on his birthday.
Got the emulator working with the new remote, now I just gotta filter through the 4,333 roms I have to decide which to keep...

So far the remote has been pretty good. I played it for about 4 hours last night, just Zelda though. I need to find a way to mount the external_sd directory to somewhere within the /sdcard/ folder so the emulator can pick up my games.

Possible solution for TV out.

It's a bare face lie. Just because something says it can do that doesn't mean it will work or be practical
I know for a fact it wont work because the Xperia play is to weak of a device to do it natively you would have to use software decoding and cause major lag not to mention huge battery drain
In the end if you want TV out. buy a Droid X. the best smart phone ever made

You're both wrong
Thats not a WiFi to HDMI Dongle. Its a mini Roku box. It only streams stuff from the Internet over WiFi. Like Netflix and Hulu, etc.
And Hogwarts, a long post about how another phone is better and to just use that is just about as useless as tits on a bull. If we wanted another phone we would have gotten one, but we like this phone because it has a game pad. We don't care about the Droid X or any other phone.

If No ICS for Xperia play then what is for Xperia play 2

Hey guys
Kept quite through this stressful time for many people who expected an ICS update but now we know we won't be getting one.I have two mixed opinions on this .
The first is why guarantee us an update if in the end they don't deliver.the way the led us on to believe is just annoying and the fact that some people moved from previous Sony devices that had been promised updates for their devices but never got one is just another sucker punch to the 2nd nut.
My other opinion is that its better to have a smooth rom than an unstable one because its all about the user experience over latest software.
My main question is if the game developers are unwilling to make their games ics compatible then if Sony ever release a Xperia play 2 then will that have to run GB or something compatible or will Sony aid them financially or expertise wise to get the games ics ready.
Who knows what will happen but they better do something big soon .
PS(sorry for any grammar errors)
Sent from my Xperia Play using xda premium
There won't be an Xplay 2.
i think so
but i still hope sony would release their latest build
Excuse me for shamelessly copying over what I wrote on another thread:
<quote from my other post>
Just releasing Xperia PLAY 2 is not going to be enough. It's still going to be seen as a niche device, thus low sales, thus not enough game titles to be an "ecosystem".
An "ecosystem" is what we really need, that is, developers must be able to see 2 things:
1.) unlike Xperia PLAY, that there WILL be new devices that can run their game-pad optimized games when the old generation fades out.
2.) there MUST be a big enough audience, ie. active devices in use.
Only then will big label game developers sink time in to make deep and 40+ game-hours titles.
To do that, rather than releasing a Xperia PLAY2, I think releasing gamepad case or battery cover options for the mainstream handsets is going to do the trick. If they do that, every Sony Handset is going to be Xperia PLAY2, 3, etc. , and even if not many of those cases actually sold, I'm hoping developers would think "Hey, there are 2 Million devices that POTENTIALLY could have gamepad. My game would play so much better with gamepad, maybe I can give my players something extra by support that."
For Physical Design of the gamepad battery cover idea, maybe it could utilize the volume of the original battery compartment to store physical analog sticks, and relocate the battery to below the gamepad. Imagine the space available from Xperia Arc or the new GX...
</quote from my other post>
Actually, if the above actually happens, I don't mind if they don't make a Xperia PLAY2 with Fixed gamepad. It'd be nice, sort of a "flagship of all gamepad capable phones", but it won't be decisive whether the ecosystem lives or dies.
On the other hand, I have a feeling that Sony is drawing a line in the sand between itself and the Xperia PLAY. With Xperia PLAY optimisation being royalty free (any program can code to use the gamepad), I think Sony is trying to get rid of it like the plague.
Even if Sony makes new phones with gamepads (detachable or not), they will want to somehow limit the gamepad access only to games published in their own eco-system (like PS Suite) to maximise profit (Afterall, this is what it's all about to Sony). But PS Suite is not going to be bogged down by XPERIA PLAY's mid-2010 hardware, so I've lost hope we'll get much from it...
So sadly I think this is as far as the Xperia PLAY will go. It'll forever be a device that runs emulators and some 2011/12 Android games. I think there won't be future devices that uses Xperia PLAY's gamepad API.
Ics has its own gamepad api, and one that already works on the xplay gamepad, touch pads and all. FPSE and N64oid both use it.
In reality, there is nothing stopping Motorola or HTC or anyone from putting a functional game pad on these devices. All moto would have to do is put the dpad from the og droid on the left and we'd be good to go.

To be honest I think the way these custom roms are being developed and coming up to scratch, many will become very decent and will be better than anything Sony can ever come up with

Did you guys read this, apparently the Chief Marketing Officer of Sony mobile Steve Walker rubbished claims that an Xperia Play 2 was in development and that the future was integration with all Xperia phones (PS Suite :S).
So no Xperia Play 2 i guess.
To me the phone is not profitable for Sony's attention/support thus the lack of interest, like the above poster said though it would be great if they created a peripheral compatible with all Xperia phones that would include a gamepad/other functionality, but I've lost interest in Sony's mobile division now they are too slow to market anything powerful and are lacking when it comes to long term support and innovative software.

Guess I'll be on this phone a while longer then. Now to get an extended battery.
extended battery with a custom protective case... oh how i wish...
exchatly my feelings.
but IMHO, this could proffit Xplay 2 more if Sony ever would do such a device.
think, Xplay support would be dropped because its on OLD hardware and OLD gingerbread and the Xplay 2 would be on NEW ICS/Any new android OS with NEW hardware, naturaly game developers wouldnt bother with old model so they would transfer all their resources to new model which would force more old users to upgrade to new.

I'll go for the MOGA over that. I'd actually really like to see the Ipega Game Controller take off, since it resolves the lack of d-pad on the "portable" MOGA.
Why do people keep comparing phones with an additional controller to the XP? "My Tablet X with a PS3 dualshock is soooo much better that the PLAY" etc!! It's like comparing an estate car to a car with a trailer fitted!
Yes, the S4 will probably destroy the play performance wise for gaming, but the fact is that the XP is a '1 piece' device, which you will have if you expect to need it, and even if you didnt expect to need it. You will always have your controller available with the XP Even the Archos Gamepad is a pointless comparison as it has no phone function!
This S4 controller looks like a childs toy, and as I don't often carry a bag round, the last thing I want to carry round in my pocket is a 'toy' controller "just in case I need it". Sorry if this offends anyone but a lot of people on here seem to be blind to the whole point of the XP!

I just took another look at this, yes it looks like a toy. And although as I do like the MOGA controller the lack of a dpad is a big issue in my book. Playing RPGs without a dpad feel unnatural to me.
The ipega doesnt look too bad, but I dont see much support for it. Everything now is the Moga, but as the S4 launches I am sure we will see things swing to the S4 Gampad and its Game Center support software.
Still what gets me though is..... with all these adapters and now Samsung making this... now $ony needs to get their booty in gear and release an Xperia PLAY 2, with some good specs. And yes I know people will say it will hurt their Vita sales.... but I have to say despite the Vita's excellent hardware, its not really selling well.
Come on $ony make an Xperia PLAY 2...... for now I will keep my trusty XP as my main phone and the Moga controller for my tablet. And despite the tablet/Moga I still prefer gaming on my XP.
Thats gross

Yes, +1, sony should be making gaming stuff, not samsung.
The ultimate test can u fit both if those things in the same pocket.

I can't understand why Sony haven't made a PlayStation certified controller, especially if they're not releasing an Xperia Play 2...
Honestly it looks more like a toy for little children, than a serious gaming device XD. Imagine you take public transportation and are seen with it...
1 - It is too big
2 - It looks like a weird XboX controller
3 - The actual gamepad might be blocking the screen (look at image)
4 - Too weird to carry, what the heck will the public think.

Oh I completely agree. Beautiful phone. I'm not opposed to larger screens... its just I don't and wont carry a secondary gaming adapter with me. The XP is an all in one. I had a coworker the other day who owns am S3 tell me my XP looked awesome. For the emulators alone. And he said he would like to play games on his phone except he hates touchscreen gaming. I let him use my Moga controller. He said it fills the gap but he also agreed its tedious to carry it around. So I say again.... $ony make a new XP2

is 4k 60p the future? nvidia shield over fire tv - mroe future proof?

amj i right in thinking the shield tv is a better buy
im in two minds whether to exchange it or not, but it seems the shield is more future proof and has better tech.. not sure if this is worth double the price of the fire tv4k
i dont need to play games, although its a good option. im considering selling the controller to compensate the cost slightly as i use my logitech touch as a remote
i mainly use kodi / plex / bbc iplayer
will there be other apps coming i.e other uk channels

Right now you can get the Nvidia Shield TV for $150 so it's a no brainer ?
The Nvidia Shield TV is a more powerful system than the PS3, so there's no comparison with the Fire TV. And yes 4K/60FPS is what you'll want for the future if not right now if you own a 4K TV. And that controller is absolutely amazing with a very high level of functionality and features.
do you think its worth swapping the controller for 360 controllers?

The GPU is twice as powerful as that in the xbox 360 according to Nvidia

Yeah! First of all, make sure that you're signed up for the GeForce Newsletter. Here's some more information from Nvidia Forums. You might also have luck contacting Amazon Live Chat as I got a $50 Discount that way as well.

Yeah the Nvidia Shield and Tegra X1 SoC are quite capable. There's even a Crysis 3 Port that exists in beta form though as of yet unreleased. Not to mention that existing games that have been ported to Android specifically for the TK1/TX1 run fluidly and some with adjustable quality settings owing to their origins as PC Ports (i.e. The Talos Principle).

Besides the plethora of existing ports of some older graphically intense games, there's also Dolphin Emulator and the high-end application of the Nvidia Shield as a 4K Media Player (@60FPS). Not to mention that some Android Games support 4K and would automatically be fairly graphically intense at high resolutions.

Yes now where are the games that actually utilize all of this power. In the back of my mind I am worried that they will not come like Nvidia said they will.
