is 4k 60p the future? nvidia shield over fire tv - mroe future proof? - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

amj i right in thinking the shield tv is a better buy
im in two minds whether to exchange it or not, but it seems the shield is more future proof and has better tech.. not sure if this is worth double the price of the fire tv4k
i dont need to play games, although its a good option. im considering selling the controller to compensate the cost slightly as i use my logitech touch as a remote
i mainly use kodi / plex / bbc iplayer
will there be other apps coming i.e other uk channels

Right now you can get the Nvidia Shield TV for $150 so it's a no brainer ?
The Nvidia Shield TV is a more powerful system than the PS3, so there's no comparison with the Fire TV. And yes 4K/60FPS is what you'll want for the future if not right now if you own a 4K TV. And that controller is absolutely amazing with a very high level of functionality and features.

do you think its worth swapping the controller for 360 controllers?

Its an impressive peace of kit for what it is, ill give you that, but, "ps3"?
I'd be very surprised to learn its as powerfull as a last gen console, dont get me wrong, the shields got some horse power, for sure, but not sure about ps3 hardware level.........where did you read this?

The GPU is twice as powerful as that in the xbox 360 according to Nvidia

Yeah! First of all, make sure that you're signed up for the GeForce Newsletter. Here's some more information from Nvidia Forums. You might also have luck contacting Amazon Live Chat as I got a $50 Discount that way as well.

Yeah the Nvidia Shield and Tegra X1 SoC are quite capable. There's even a Crysis 3 Port that exists in beta form though as of yet unreleased. Not to mention that existing games that have been ported to Android specifically for the TK1/TX1 run fluidly and some with adjustable quality settings owing to their origins as PC Ports (i.e. The Talos Principle).

Besides the plethora of existing ports of some older graphically intense games, there's also Dolphin Emulator and the high-end application of the Nvidia Shield as a 4K Media Player (@60FPS). Not to mention that some Android Games support 4K and would automatically be fairly graphically intense at high resolutions.

Yes now where are the games that actually utilize all of this power. In the back of my mind I am worried that they will not come like Nvidia said they will.

Best XBMC tv box at the moment jan 2014

I'm in the market for a TV-box that can run XBMC without lags and has a good wifi connection.
there so many different tv-boxes out there that i dont know where to start.
if been eyeing a CS968 a RK3188 ChipSet Based TVBoX but dont really think its plug a play with xbmc.
If there better out there i would like to know
so if someone can point me in the right direction if would be gratefull.
thanks in advance

I have got the Tronsmart T428, XBMC runs great on it but unfortunately they are not going to release a 4.3 or 4.4 ROM for it.
there is a new xbmc build that works nearly everywhere, even KitKat. it's called Beyond XBMC and it is based on SBMC, also can co-exist with any XBMC and wont interfere on their configuration.
http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.php?9603-Beyond-XBMC
also, a Launcher version is also available.
Paired with the custom KitKat rom that's being tested publicly, it is quite good (Minix X7)
A box which can run native linux and has HW decoding.
From what I read when I was looking for a box getting hardware decoding with rockchip is not something that's common.
I finally settled on an MX box. G18REF. much like the pivos, sum vision nano slim, but a bit cheaper. Mine was £56 from a UK ebay seller and I got my father one for £47 from hong kong.
croniccorey has put a lot of of work into MX Linux, a linux build that runs only XBMC.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2418029
You lose a lot, web browsing, netflix, other android things but they don't really work all that well and if you're wanting XBMC you will want a good experience of XBMC, which you don't get on android.
I have tested this build with 55Mbs mkv files - that's higher than BR, and it plays at 1080p perfectly.
Of course there is the odd error with some encodes, but a pure linux experience is so much better than android

720p videos run out of the box at CS968.
For 1080p you need custom Rom.

Haha, that's me. I just put a new version up but it is locked to certain build props. It should play all content far better than beta 2.
the Ouya has dropped to 69.99 on amazon.ca so if your in canada this is a realy good option!
useing SBMC or beyond xbmc on in works well.
Custom Rom
For 1080p you need custom Rom.? What is a custom Rom?
Minix7 with a good custom rom from freaktab and run the beyond xbmc build. My box has never looked/ran so good! I have the mk902 which is great but no body is devving for it yet.
GNote3
one vote for minix x7... it has good development!
Will xbmc run on Dell's HDMI android stick?
Based on the hardware? Specs in link.

Now I noticed your question.
A custom Rom is a modified original firmware, usually aiming in deliveringa faster system with extra characteristics like overclocking, kernel tuning etc.

I bought the imito qx1 with rk3188 amd external wifi antenna, for 80$. I run stock 4.2.2 and xbmc works flawlessly as well as youtube. I recommend the logitech k400 also.

Looks sweet - but does it simply run XBMC with videos it can find on your local LAN? It seems like the "top" boxes never do this... I don't want to have to buy another chinese made one that'll never get updates
What I basically want is an android device that boots up into XBMC. Sure, quad-core 2gbram etc.. .ec.. helps. but the basics!!!!

Good and popular tv boxes like CS968, had many custom roms to choose from.
Some of them were offering the XBMC boot that you request.
So I am guessing that other popular boxes might have such custom rom available.

It's shocking that Measy A2W Chromecast style dongle. Literally peanuts.
I have two of the Measy style dongles. Worthless IMHO.
Ok. so if you ONLY want to stream from your phone then it's great. and for about $20 it is a good value.
I just received one of the Android TV boxes with the Amlogic S802 processors, M8. while it's just over $100, it's far more useful. Basically turns your tv into an android phone minus the touch screen. XBMC plays most videos including DTS audio and also streams cable tv in HD from my silicon dust HDhomerun prime.
Enjoy.

Indeed, the larger boxes (Mini PCs) are worth the extra bucks. The little Chromecast style Ezcast M2 streaming dongles are handy for 20/30 bucks. But the larger units where its at.
Saying that there are two new units recently announced. RK3288 based. Ugoos UM3 dongle, and the mini PC TV box style is the Ugoos UT3.
Supporting 2K and 4K video playback and recording.

PS4 Remote Play With Sony Xperia Z3

Hey Guys and Gals
So we know the Sony Xperia Z3 features PS4 Remote play, anybody going to be grabbing one for this purpose?
It would be great to get the PS4 Remote play feature ported to other devices, lets see what our great developers can do

It's a nice feature and I do plan to pick up a PS4 in the future so it works for me.
Realistically, I probably won't use it much.... perhaps only if I really want to play my game and watch TV/streams at the same time.
I'd honestly love remote play for non games. Eg watching blu ray extras (or even just listening to commentaries). Stuff I can't really be bothered using the full home theatre for. I mean I used to use my PSP for remote playing PlayTV recordings on my ps3
Really interested in this. Hopefully someone can bring it to non Sony devices if Sony doesn't or takes it sweet time doing so.
It's pretty much the only reason I'm considering this phone. Otherwise I'd get a Vita and keep my GS4. Already have a Nyko mount on my PS4 controller (IGN/SMS, no streaming) the GS4

Let's hope Dev's help out owners of other phones so they can enjoy this feature... Sony have stated though that this is exclusive to Sony phones, the newer ones in particular and they won't be making it compatible with other handsets. You can never say never though I guess, personally I can't wait to get a Z3 when I get paid, even though I've only recently bought a Nexus 5 lol
This is the thing I own.

I own the PS4 (Destiny pack) and now the Z3. I don't know how to use remote play? Same Wi-Fi access?
By the way, someone at Sony told me that the official DualShock 4/Z3 smart clip will be released in November.

Unfortunately the proper PS4 remote play app has not been released yet. Yes you can use the Playstation App for second screen etc in the meantime like other smartphones but the remote play feature isn't due until november.
I see, they announced this feature but it's not available yet. Too bad :silly:
This appears to be a neutered version of Remote Play in comparison to what is offered through the Vita. I say this because it sounds as if Remote Play will only work at home on the same WiFi network as your PS4, not over the internet like the Vita's Remote Play offers? Is this true? If so, has the genius Android user base found a way to work around this yet? To me the feature is completely useless if it only works at home, if I am at home I will use my PS4 on a TV.

Why would you even think about serious gaming over 3G or 4G? - The latency will be so high it will just be too much of a lag-fest for it to be playable (I've tried with my Vita and its pants even over Wifi with my PS4 being on fibre optic internet).
The main difference here is that you can use a Dualshock 4 pad with remote play - its the main thing that put me off vita for remote play - them stupid touch buttons underneath had to be used.
As long as Sony make it work properly it will be more than worth the wait - Destiny in bed lol

@zoomee
Dont try to describe lagging, most of them dont understand.
_________________________
Im afraid we can only use this remote feature when our bootloader is locked with all drm features.
PS Vita has to less power for remote play, it lags a little, using L2 and R2 buttons suck and the screen quality is bad.
The remote play feature was my reason to buy a Z3.
As far as I know, they said the same thing about remote play on the vita. It isn't officially supported, but it works fine. No reason to think it won't be the same on the Z3.
So anybody any idea when it will become available? Just read this morning that firmware update 2.0 for the PS4 will come out on the 28th of October. Hopefully the remote play app will be released as well.
Just in case you have doubts about latency, low frame rate, etc.

Is nvidia shield android tv worth buying at this point?

My knockoff android tv set-top box is crap so I am considering to buy nvidia shield android TV. Considering it was released just under a year ago, I am worried that there will be a better version released soon and I would spend my money on obsolete version. Will there be a newer version soon?
A year goes by, and nothing has been able to beat it thusfar.
Nvidia are quite good with long term support, so expect this device to last atleast another three to five years.
This is a box aimed at the livingroom. They aren't going to bring one out every year. That's the whole reason they made it 13 times more powerful than anything else out there.
You just have to compare the latest flagship Galaxy S7 with the Shield TV to see that.

Nice. Got the item delivered today. It's upgrading it to 3.0 on its own.
Considering that I do have a 4K TV, good investment.
Thanks guys.
To be honest, yes it's the best buy you can make. There are some issuies with 3.0, but they are fixing it. Also keep in mind that you can bevefit from allot of feautres of the shield tv like if you have a GTX GPU
Price on the hardware is going down, more and more reasons to own one over time, and the AnTutu benchmark app listed my shield android tv (with tons of apps running in the background) as being nearly twice the total performance overall of the 2nd place result. It's not the best of everything, but where it shines ... it shines a lot , where it's not the best, it's still able to compete with some of the best out there. It's been out about a year, and yet it's still the highest performing device. It plays everything you throw at it... and there's so much it does right that I can't suggest against owning one unless the person can't afford it.

Shield 2?

I'm looking at picking up a Shield TV in the next few months, but wanted to see if there might be a newer version coming out. I know the Roku releases new models every year or so, and it's been about a year since the release of the Shield. Is there any buzz about a new/upcoming version out there?
Thanks
If a new version were to come out in the near future it would most likely be another mobile device & not a set top box
I would agree on this. SATV still offers the best hardware, and next software update will continue to add features (youtube 4k 60fps for example).
I don't really see what a Shield 2 could offer more right now, I mean besides more perfs but as of today nothing trumps the SATV 1.
A new Shield tablet would benefit on the contrary from a SOC pascal-based for example, since the SOC it's using now is older than the one in SATV

I don't really see what a Shield 2 could offer more right now, I mean besides more perfs but as of today nothing trumps the SATV 1.
A new Shield tablet would benefit on the contrary from a SOC pascal-based for example, since the SOC it's using now is older than the one in SATV

The next software update hit a pop-fly right outta left field with the Shield TV being a full Plex Media Server now with transcoding too.
Its out of stock everywhere even on the Nvidia website so something is happening.
There is an FCC filing for a new one, which is a pretty good indicator.

Also I saw something on reddit, when someone asked why it was out of stock everywhere, but this was mostly speculation.

I would say chances are pretty good that a new SATV is on the way. Timing and release date would be hard to pin down.
just to temper things there was an fcc filing for a new tablet and that didnt happen , admittedly the lack of stock does usually hint at a new release but who knows if its just a rev of the same setup

As for the discontinued Tablet 2, that was considered due to nVidia providing the SoC for Nintendo's NX (to not compete). So I guess, it's a good sign that the SATV refresh is really coming soon (until holiday season?) as the form factor is quite different. Too bad they close it down so much.
I would assume the new one would maybe be designed to be cheaper. Or maybe a removable HD would be awesome.
Let's hope nvidia don't axe it completely. They have been known to do more professional and ODM stuff then consumer, and the switch is comming.
Surprised nobody has mentioned this.

It's definitely the new Shield or as good as it going to get.
Lost the Sd card slot now.
Same innards and a re-design,mostly extra software features that the original Shield will get too.
Mid gen console refresh, loosing sdcard and a better gamepad you can buy to use in old model too. That's all.
"Old" model will get Nougat as an OS upgrade and will have the same functionality.
Why on earth would they take the sd card out?
HDMI port is now 2.0b
And it looks like it also lost the IR receiver.
does the original not have 2.0b

i'm curious if this will support side loading apps without root and how easy it is to root before i fork up the cash for this thing.
going to wait a bit for customer feedback first before i buy imo.

Looking at the spec sheet on nVidias website, it looks like only the pro version has the ir receiver, micro sd, and micro usb connection. Semi-confirmed by amazon closeups.
Is this really worth calling it a Sheild TV2? It seems to me it's more like a Shield TV Slim. As to the IR Port, until we start seeing the first YouTube reviews crop up. I'll continue to trust the released Spec Sheet that states that it'll have one.
On that same topic, both the Gamepad, and Remote on the 2017 Models should also come with an IR Blaster. nNot for the Shield, which uses either Bluetooth 4.1 BLE, or WiFi Direct. But to control other AVrs, and TVs.
