[Q] Power Button Issues :( lol - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I just bought a new phone, yes, i guess you know what it is.
G900H (damn...) I wanted F version.
Well, Everything worked nicely, then I tried water, apps, anything, the phone worked.
BUT something happened, power button didnt work, sometimes it did sometimes it didnt... Then I restarted, a LOT, pulling battery etc, It booted itselft btw. Then I deleted apps, etc. Somehow, after 30+ restarts, it worked! phone worked normally, i was like, WTH.
then after 2 or 3 months, now...
Today I washed the phone, everything closed, it looks like after that, the phone's power button doesnt WORK... (every other button worked fine, all operations up to date. nothing bad)
I went to recovery.. power button didnt work. volume, home did work.
I asked myself, did I screw up the power button? then should I wait for the phone to dry out? WTH. This thing worked for so many times, NOW it doesnt...wat do i do..
DOWNLOAD MODE
once in download mode, volume + to go volume - to restart phone.
I couldnt CLICK any option.WTH
WHAT IS GOING ON WITH MY PHONEEEE
yes, warranty is void
anyone happened the same?

WTH indeed. Should you wait for the phone to dry out? Seriously? Electricity and water.
You shouldn't be washing a phone. Carefully wipe it with a damp cloth perhaps. And yes wait for it to dry. If you are lucky, it will be okay after it dries, although it sounds like you have a physically damaged button.
You could try reverting to 100% stock to rule out software issues. The only proper fix for physical damage is to replace the power button. The part is dirt cheap, but the labour to disasemble yourphone and install it could be quite expensive.
A possible workaround would be an app that remaps the button elsewhere. That won't work to power on the device, but may help for routine operation once it's already on. Should your power button completely fail, you can use an USB JTAG adapter to turn your phone on.

Hi bud,
thanks for replying,
I got so scared, but it looks like now everything works, I put the phone to charging, the button looks perfect, y clicks and everything.. i dont see how it is damaged T.T
Maybe water entered somewhere? Damn u samsung, water proof THaT.
After charging a bit, I was stuck in recovey, I tried pressing power button . IT Worked! then it didnt, I had a few self reboots but everything is fine now.
So I guess I had to dry it. How? I cant know, the phone seems dry to me. Maybe theres a small hole where water could enter in power button?
let me see your opinions.

Looks perfect, clicks and everything. But doesn't work reliably. And you can't imagine how it could be damaged? I would have thought the erratic operation to be a clue.

Show us where Samsung ever wrote that the phone is waterproof. It's water resistant, which means that it will probably save you from permanent damage if it gets accidentally wet. A splash, rain, a one time drop into shallow water. But tempting fate by routinely exposing it to water; washing it or taking it along when snorkeling would be imprudent.
It's unclear from your last post if the button is now working properly or not. If it is, great. If not, you will find some suggestions in my previous post. Good luck.

[Q] Help - I Drenched My A500...

Need some help here. I "managed" to drench my tab. Yeah, I know - stoopid me. So what's done is done. Currently the tab's display in not working. I think I was able to power it up - white light on the power button but this stays on forever.
I'm going to return the tab. So here's the question - how would I go about doing a factory reset without actually logging in to the tab?
Thanks in advance.
Bang...
Yeah I really did a banged up job on the tab. LOL!!
Could try to salvage it first and restore and then return it. Odds are if you turned the power on after drenching it you messed it up badly so youre data is gone anyways.
First of all, you should not have tried to turn it on until it was dry. That can cause shorting.
Any time an electronic device gets wet, pull the battery as soon as possible.
Stick it in a bag of dry rice for a week or two (pulls the moisture out) before trying to power it on.
I have a friend who's phone went to the bottom of a lake 3 times. Came back from it all three.

Indeed. NEVER turn on a wet electronic device. Especially in case where it's got as heavy-duty battery as a tablet or laptop has.
+1 For the rice trick. Silica works as well (the stuff that comes with a new pair of shoes).
+1,000,000 for never ever turning on a moist device! Water conducts electricity, so as entropyiv said, you probably shorted it out.
I'm also thinking that returning the tablet isn't going to work. They'll know immediately that it got wet, and that's a pretty straight forward warranty killer!
Good luck, and let us know the outcome!
most stores dont check for water damage. If you biught it at target youre in luck. When i worked there we were liniant if you had a reciept.
This is why I bought the accidental warranty...
I ride a motorcycle and have gotten radios and such wet in the past. I make sure and turn them off immediately, remove power and then once I'm home I leave them in the hot garage for a few days and I've never had a one that didn't come back to life.
Thanks...
for your responses. I'll try going the usb route to get rid of all my personal data off the tab. Once again, thank you!
The best advice I could give you as a former Compaq Computers Engineer is to take the back cover off, disconnect the battery if you can and unplug anything back there that you can. Leave the tablet in a relatively warm room for 24 hrs, reconnect everything and 9 times out of 10 it will work again. I'm not sure if you permanently ruined it trying to immediately trying to turn it on, but try this advise and see if it will work for you.
Good luck!
Ted
Wish I had the accidental on mine, i'm in the same boat. Only I cant do much with it.
BTW, anyone want a perfectly good iconia battery?

There was a guy with a busted screen.another withbdamaged case.part it out and you can get most of your money back.
Look for other damaged and droped unit threads
Good luck to you both
If it's warrantied, I would put the charger in it and toss it back in water to make sure it's fried good. Anything so it doesn't appear to power-up.
Or... if it had Recovery loaded, try to work through the menus for wiping before adding a mod. Touch screen isn't used.
What happened ? I only ask because the case seems like it would hold water back for at least a couple seconds, enough to get it out without the components getting wet.
Hello and thanks once again to everyone who'd responded.
I left the tab with some silicon gelica thing in a bag in a hot room for two days. Powered up the tab, looked like it was going to work - e.g. acer logo came up, as well as the android logo. I was feeling optimistic that the tab may just be fine. But alas, the LCD just won't work. I got a screen that's constantly flickering, snow, etc. It sure looked like the TV from the movie Poltergeist. lol!!
At least I can boot this sucker up. Now to see if the HDMI port is working or not. If it does, then I can hook it up to my TV, plug in a USB hub for a mouse and keyboard...then I should be able to do a factory reset to clear my personal data. Keeping my fingers crossed that this will work. Worse case, my Win 7 PC should see the tab and maybe I can "format" that thing from there.
Don't worry, I am NOT returning this to any retailer...this unit was not "store bought"...it's an engineering sample that was on loan to me... ;-)

Power Button Issues

Hi,
My power button was working perfectly however, my friend tried to install some (hacked) google wallet app and he had to install and change some buildprop file (i dont know if he did). However, after this my power button started playingup.
When I press it, it completes the action as if i had held it down and it brings up the power menu. Sometimes it locks the phone but its no where near what it was like before.
I have completely factory reset my phone (and now have rooted it again) and its still playing up (although its a bit better now)
does anyone have an idea so as to what has caused this problem?
thank you in advance
Just send it to samsung center..

does it have to be alcohol or can you use something else?
It has to be isopropyl alcohol, preferably 99% no less then 91%. No guarantee that this will fix it but my power button recently "broke" it would still click but it wouldn't work or it would act like it was stuck pressed in and cleaning the power button with alcohol and a q tip worked.
Watch this video very carefully so you do not break or damage anything, it is intimidating but is very easy with patience, I think those with semi functional power buttons are just dirty after years of use and the alcohol cleans it restoring functionality.

volume button craziness (possibly water?)

Hey all,
So the other night at the pub, a friend spilled their water on the table, and my nexus 4 was in the path. It was quickly removed and pulled out of its case which seemed to have protected it and was working just fine. The next morning however, and the past few days, it's been acting perfectly fine except for it acting like the volume down button is being held down. The worst part is I can't get it to boot into regular mode, only safe mode because it thinks the button is being held down...
Could this have been the water? I tried a couple days in rice with no change. Any ideas for what I should try next? It makes me incredibly frustrated to think a perfectly good phone would go to waste just because the volume button is acting wonky (and I've tried mashing on it and making sure it's not stuck in or anything).
Thanks!

Cool, I'll give that a shot...too bad my tool set only goes down to a T6! Gotta get a T5 and some proper rubbing alcohol. Fingers crossed!
So, no luck trying to clean it with alcohol. The button is still acting as if it is being held down.
...what do I do with the phone now?

Yay I'm finally the first person to (almost?) break my Moto Z Force. *Facepalm*

About an hour before writing this, I moved a cable off my desk which was also under my Force, and off goes the force back first onto the floor. Seems perfectly fine, using it just like normal, but after doing some things in the play store I decided to lock the phone with the power button, I pressed it. Aaaaand nothing.
Volume keys worked fine, everything else worked fine..why not the power button? Who knows. I tried restarting through adb hoping that was the issue and not the drop, didn't fix anything. So...I had possibly the dumbest solution possible. Lets replicate the drop and see what happens. Power button starts to work, but barely, you have to really press it hard to get it to work. Thought lets do it again. Now it's back to not working at all.
At this point I'm scared of dropping my phone any more because I don't want to break the entire thing, but I'm starting to get hopeless. One of the drops I tried to replicate it, it landed face first and cracked my screen protector. So I'm like screw it.
I cover the back camera of the phone with like 4 sheets of tissue and put it inside a PLESON TPU case, to cover the camera, and I just outright drop the thing from like 5 feet high, back first. Now the power button works perfectly again (What the ****?) All that was lost was a good screen protector...?
TL;DR don't drop your phone back first, your power button might become misaligned with...god knows what.
Thanks for the tip... and... Congrats

That's the craziest thing I have ever heard.... Something doesn't act right after accidently dropping the phone, so let's drop the phone many times on purpose and drop it from 5 feet..... Really???
This does remind me of a computer I was repairing ages ago. I got frustrated with trying to get data off of a clicking hard drive so I threw it on the cement floor. Worked perfectly after that. I think the head assembly was stuck or something lol.

Random screen presses and back button presses?

Hi,
A while ago my S7 Edge had some strange behaviour. I think I posted a forum when I had the problem, but suddenly the phone was working normal again... Until now. (5 months later)
When I'm watching youtube video's it's like I'm continius pressing the screen to show the pause/play button and title of the video. But I aint touching that screen?!
Also the back button keeps pressing itself. It's so anoying... I disabled the capacitive buttons in the generic.kl file, so they don't work in android. This took me like 20mins to do, because I kept going bck to the home screen...
When I layed in bed, I saw that the back button was slightly lit up. Just a little bit. I freaked out, because I have the backlight of the keys turned off!
Is it possible that there got water inside the phone? The only water this phone has seen is the shower.
Does someone have a clue what this problem is?
Thanks!
Hmm it looks like a screen problem to me.. doubt is the water since i i always use my phone under water...have you tried a factory reset? Are runing a custom rom?

It's also present in the recovery (twrp latest), that makes it really hard to flash roms when the back button is pressed continously..
But I didn't try that yet, I switched between a couole roms and the problem is still present.

Then it must be water on the button like the other guy said.. go to YouTube and find a video that help you to open the back side of your phone and do it with a dryer . I don't know the word .. the thing that we do on our hairs after the bath you know ;p
The issue is most certainly because of water damage. Most of the time if water comes into an S7/Edge it starts messing up with the cap keys, had those somptoms one, and also other people, but for me it was just 1 time after a pool bath with my phone, and it went away after maybe 1h. Now I am carefully when making the phone wet and I get it near water just to clean it, but not for fun anymore.

That's just stupid.. Samsung claims it's waterproof, so the shower mustn't be a problem, right..
I just spotted like realy tiny like bubbles or something on the back button, it looks like water indeed... **** me.
I think i'm remove the sim tray and put the phone in a rice bag for a couple days. If the problem doesn't go away, then I'll open up the back (breaking the waterproof seal ) and dry it up. Wish me luck..

It is water resistant, which means that it is still possible to get water inside/water damage.
i'm also having a strange issue with the phone after some upgrades. my phone will freeze at times and nothing will restore this unless i use the back button and the phone works. It doesnt happen all the time but only at times. Its like its in pause mode and only back button fixes this.
