Is there any tool to extract system.img?
UPDATE:
I found a way how to do it.
I used sgs4ext4fs by Chainfire to modify system.img and after that Ext2explore to extract files from modified system.img .
Also if anyone is interested how to extract hidden.img, first you need to modify it with sgs4ext4fs and after that use sgs2toext4. Then you can open modified hidden.img with ext4_unpacker and extract files from it.

Maybe you could repack it with root files to get root. There is a how to video on you tube. I would do it, but my linux machine is down.

Please don't coming from the one that said root is okay from the note 10.1 2014 edition. Root and profit. Sound familiar. You mean root and brick.

Chainfire needs recovery.img to make cf autoroot for us. Are u able to extract the recovery.img for the q0.5 as well as 8.4 so I can post it in the cf auto root thread so we can get root?

bare with me on that one since I tried too many different options, following worked for me - required files attached here (I ziped, so hopefully XDA did not blocked it)
This is for Windows PC:
1. Download sgs4ext4fs.exe, and download firmware, unzip firmware up until you see system.img.
2. Open command prompt (on windows, click start, type cmd) where system.img, and type
sgs4ext4fs --trim system.img systemt.img
........ > you will see bunch of ............., but wait until it finishes.
3. Once it finishes it creates systemt.img, get sgs2toext4.jar (save it to the same folder), and open sgs2toext4.jar, and drag and drop newly created systemt.img to the window (sgs2toext4.jar's window), wait until it finishes, when it finishes it will create systemt.ext4.img
4. Now last step, download ext2explore.exe, and open it, and go to file --> open image and pick systemt.ext4.img, it will show the img file there (on both side of window), on the left side, select the systemt.ext4.img (should be showing full path), right click your mouse, and select save to your desktop or any other folder location you pick.
Obviously, next step will be odexing everything:laugh:

How to view & unpack system.img.ext4?

So I was trying to get the media folder from the Galaxy s4 black.
Downloaded the firmware, extracted it until system.img.ext4.
Now how do I open this?
Tried with ext2explore - it did nothing when I chose the file
Tried with diskinternals - raw disk image - File system not supported
Anybody?

Have you tried this :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2294909
I use it all the time
I also cannot open the system.img.ext4 file with ext4 unpacker. ( it crashes after working for 15 minutes), is there another solution?
Just rename system.img.ext4 to system.img
I was having the same problem and it worked once I did this.
Not working

I've done this numerous times, tried renaming it and all, I swear I did this the exact same way a few weeks ago and it worked no problem. Ext2Explorer doesn't do anything and the ext4 Unpacker freezes and always makes me force close it now. I'm using Windows 8.1 but I also tried this by mounting in Linux and I get an error as well, "wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0," etc... So I'm not sure what happened I've downloaded the firmware from 2 different sources and from one of the sources I downloaded it from 4 different mirrors totaling 5 different downloads so there is no way my files are corrupt it won't work with ANY of them. I'm honestly so confused I don't even know where to look anymore so here I am posting along with the last few people that seem to share my pain. Hopefully someone can help us.
This is the firmware I'm using download and try it out for me pretty please let me know if your system has any issues?

Solved below
Open Galaxy S4 system.img.ext4
This is my tested method on SHV-E330L, a korean variant of Galaxy S4.
1) Unpack with sgstoex4.
2) Open unpacked file with ext2explore.
No other method works like ext4_unpacker etc., if it helps please hit thanks
Thanks!

Open system.img.ext4 in windows easily with 2 tools!
First download this 2 tools
1. linux reader
2.jar file
http://www.diskinternals.com/download/ (linux reader)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=645192&d=1309768531
DOne 50 %:good:
Step 1)
Download Diskinternals Linux reader and open it up.
Step 2)
Download sgs2ext4.jar and open it up.
Step 3)
Take you system.img and move it into the sgs2ext4.jar application and wait until it is done.
Step 4)
Now you should get a system.img.ext4 file or something like that just make sure ext4/ext is in the name
Step 5)
Now in Diskinternals click on Drives –> mount image, now a window will pop-up, leave the box on RAW disk image and click next, now search for the system.img ext4 file and choose it.
Step 6)
Now you see a new drive which looks like this: Linux EXT Volume 1 (Number can be different) Open the drive and click on commands and then select all.
Step 7)
Now do Ctrl+S to save the files where you want them, i suggest you to make a folder on you desktop called system and save it there.
Good Luck !

Unfortunately this doesn't work. When you drop the system.img.ext4 file onto the sgs2ext4 tool, no file is produced. The tool just keeps endlessly repeating:
"system.img.ext4 32 B 0 B/s"
I think that tool is too old (2.5 years old) and doesn't support the newest Samsung firmwares.

Unroot & Re-pack firmware?

I had 50pc japan version of s5(sc-04f), installed rom 'G900F.STOCK.FOR.SCL23.FULL.MINHQUAN'. The downside of this rom is that its pre-rooted. I managed to unroot it by goin in supersu & click 'full-unroot'. But i had multiple devices to flash, so is there a way for me to re-pack this firmware again after i unroot it? So that i could flash it to my other devices without root.

Should we search for this firmware or you can provide a link to its thread?

Generally, if it's 6.0.1 and rooted systemlessly, you need to replace boot.img with a stock one and remove SuperSU app from system.img.
This ROM intended to be flashed from TWRP, so it's an ext4 image.
You can mount it to a linux system on your PC and remove anything you want.
I havent done anything like this before. Could u give me some links or guides? My PC is running Windows 10.

Ok, here' a simpler way:
1. Make changes on one phone.
2. Make a TWRP backup of boot and system partitions.
3. Restore this backup on other phones. They must have TWRP installed, a 6.0.1 bootloader and modem.
You'll have to rename backup's folder path and to wipe cache/data/system before restore.
can i use winrar to extract & compile the rom, without linux? So that i will have a much faster flashing process for all other units..

Ok, I've managed to download that ROM at last.
The things look even simpler.
To prepare an "unrooted" ROM:
1. Download the zip form this post and unpack updater-script somewhere.
2. Make a copy of V3.G900F.STOCK.FOR.SCL23.FULL.MINHQUAN.zip, open it with Windows Explorer and replace V3.G900F.STOCK.FOR.SCL23.FULL.MINHQUAN.zip\META-INF\com\google\android\updater-script with the file you've unpacked from the attachment.
3. Try to flash ans see if it's what you need.
thx so much, already passed all units to the buyer. ill try that on next batch restock, may iknow if there's a way to get the service menu shortcode *#0*# to work again? This rom doesn't has the service menu.

I already shared the firmware here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=75076587&postcount=7
This is the September version. In order to get to the newest version of Nougat, you have to install the update zips one by one. They are on the forum too.
Happy flashing

No, unzip the archive and then click on Edit phone Information on OST. You can do this while the archive is extracting to skip some wait time. Then open your favorite terminal program and flash the img files from the archives like this: (example with the included fastboot-android.exe on Windows)
fastboot-android.exe flash x x.img. X is the filename of the img file. You can look into my linked article to see which partitions you have to flash for a complete system reinstall. Note: if you flash recovery, your twrp will be replaced by the stock recovery.
