[Q] Where to make device requests? - Omni Q&A

I own a Samsung GT-i8552, commonly known as Galaxy Win or Galaxy Grand Quattro. It is a very popular device, but hasn't grabbed attention of developers. The phone has good specifications, so we need a good AOSP ROM to go with it. Would be much obliged.

Most devs don't develop for a device they don't own.. Maybe start a thread in the 7.0 Plus area asking if someone has one to donate and / or raise cash to buy a dev one..
We are pretty lucky with the 10.1 as we have some of the best devs on XDA here..
I know a few devs were tempted by the 7 Plus (an Exynos Tab? Sounds great! At least at first) but then were turned off by the AR6000 driver source code fiasco.
A closed-source binary module that has been identified to be the root of documented stability problems for a device is a developer's nightmare, and a great way to completely kill its desirability for a developer.
I was considering the 7 Plus, but the AR6000 driver mess made me decide to wait for a device that Samsung didn't **** up.
Not like I'd be much benefit - you already have a very good kernel developer and I've given him a whole pile of pointers.

Greatly appreciate your help. I personally own a 10.1 but purchased a 7+ as well for a custom vehicle install.
I understand DEV's don't normally dev on a device they don't have. But it does happen...quite a bit on some devices. Just trying to wrussle up some love is all.
Thank guys
The ability to do blind development is highly dependent on how similar a device is to one the developer owns.
For example, I finally started blind developing I9100 kernels because the difference is incredibly small and you can compile for both I9100 and I777 with just one defconfig change.
The Tab 7 Plus is completely and totally different from anything else out there, and the presence of closed-source modules makes blind development nearly impossible even if there were similar hardware.

[DEV Collaboration] Galaxy Tab P1010 WIFI - Cyanogenmod - Kernel 3.0.x

Hello Folks,
I am a Recognized XDA Developer and I work on Cyanogenmod for Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 which is an exact similar device to Galaxy Tab P1010 (TI OMAP3630).
We have got fully working CM9 and CM10 on Galaxy SL, with few minor issues with video recording and laggy interface. However, we are working on porting the new 3.0.8 kernel that was released on omapzoom. This new kernel would help us resolve issues that we have been affecting ICS and JB releases.
So far, we have managed to get the kernel booting with few basic stuff like Touchscreen, Panel, Audio, Keypad, Vibrator working. Galaxy SL is exactly similar to Galaxy Tab P1010 WIFI and it essentially shares the same kernel and I suspect that most of the userspace stuff also should be the same. I was informally asked by cdesai if I was interested to develop for this device, but I had to turn my back since I wasn't really having the time for it.
However, since we are working on a new kernel for Galaxy SL from scratch, I would really like to take the initiative of making something useful for P1010 too, keeping in mind the small user base for Galaxy SL, we thought our work could be useful for P1010 and would benefit more people.
We would like developers working on P1010 to come forward and let us know the current status of development on this device (Kernels, Custom Roms, Attempts at CM, etc), so that we could plan something accordingly. Also, we would be interested to know how many people actually own this device and would like to have CM over it. Let's use this topic as a playground!

Let's do it people, I'm willing to help dhiru as well.
I'm in too
@dhiru (Y)
This is fantastic news, and thanks for considering the P1010 as everywhere else I've looked hasn't really got anywhere. While I'm afraid I won't be able to help with any of the development (I wish I could, but I'm too busy as it is), I can use my device for testing. Keep it up, and I can't wait until it's all sorted.
Personally, I'd love to have any version of CM on this tablet, as Android 2.3.6 is looking really dated now, and the interface is laggy compared to that of Android 4.1 devices. I've upgraded to CM10 on my Galaxy S and it's so much smoother than it was, I can only hope the same is possible for this device, as it's certainly capable.
Also, I know Motofoca over on the MadTeam forums was working on it (which you already know, most likely), but he's not mentioned anything towards progress in a while. I can't post a link though, considering I've got less than 10 posts, so you'll have to google it.
Any help I can give is gladly offered, now when it comes to coding I am rusty... In fact I think the rust has extra layers of rust but know what I am looking at and can spot the bugs and offer suggestions.
I have two of these and still think the actual build of them is excellent so would love to have some decent internals

I'm owning a P1000 too (as per the question of the OP) and I would really like to have a current CM 10.1 release with kernel 3.0 on it... I'm a java developer with some C++ background but I didn't have the time yet to dive into android development (neither high nor low level)..
If there is anything to test or provide info about just ask..

I don't know whether this was a typo or not, but you can get CM10 or CM9.1 (stable) for the P1000 already. Just look on the cyanogenmod site for the P1. This is for the P1010 which is the WIFI only version of that tab and doesn't yet have a release of cyanogenmod for it.

Hi, I have it. I also have some experience with kernel on Omap4 (I developed for 3.0.x and 3.2.x), but very little time to share at the moment.
Please post here in this thread any update or request.
Thanks
P1010 here also. Plenty of processing power and a website for storage and distribution...

Looking forward to trying their huge creations from Ecuador ... CMs for the P1010, do not let this device die. Sorry for my English, I hope this well written ..
Hello guys, I also have a P1010! maybe I can help you as a tester, I have experience with flashing and rooting

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.4 LTE Support

I am thinking of buying a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 LTE and I was wondering if you will officially support this device for your custom ROM?

Standard answer here:
Find a maintainer in your device's own forums.
Projects like this are done by volunteers. As such, people choose to work on devices they want to work on. Some of us will take on devices upon request in special circumstances, but only if we've got some initial interest in them. (For example, most of the core team love Oppo because they've been so nice to us, so when they send us a device, we go out of our way to support it. Within limits, though - being MTK-based has really killed the R819.)
In the case of Samsung devices - many of us worked with Samsungs in the past and never want to touch them again. So if you want such an oddball/niche device supported, you'll need to find someone in that device's forums that's interested in doing the bringup.

ROM Porting?

Hello there. I recently acquired a Samung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1. I love the tablet but there has been no ROM development as of yet. In my understanding, this is due to the fact that the 8.4 version is much more popular and shares architecture (Snapdragon) with many other devices making it easier to develop for. In looking at the 10.1 specifications, it seemed like the Nexus 10 and Tab Pro 10.1 had many similarities (including Samsung manufacture and Exynos 5 chip). So, my question is whether or not a Nexus 10 ROM could be easily ported to the Tab Pro 10.1? I am not a developer, so forgive my ignorance and naivete if this is a ridiculous question.
If they are very alike it is a bit easier. But you might be better of building from source.

Have you seen this guide? Samsung has that um... unique TW UI so trying to port AOSP based Nexus 10 roms will almost certainly fail (unless there's already CM or AOSP for the Tab but based on what you said that doesn't seem to be the case). Also the Nexus 10 has the Exynos 5 Dual while the Tab uses the Octa. Check out the Exynos Wikipedia page and try a TW based ROM from something else with the Octa but it still seems like a bit of a long shot too me. Good luck.
Also, mrgnex is right that building from source is probably better. But if it's not already supported by CM or AOSP you're out of luck. Samsung has opensourced the code but it seems kind of silly to build a TW ROM from source since most of the custom TW ROMs are just baked from the stock ROM.
As I said, I am not a developer. Thanks for your replies.

[Q] S5 vs. S5+ - Custom Rom support (Cyanogen)

Hi all,
I ordered a S5 and got the smartphone yesterday. However, I was suprised that it actually is a S5+ (G901F).
My first reaction was: Nice, I even got more than I wanted, but my second thought was: Is the Custom ROM support for the S5+ as good as for the S5?
I definitely want to install the Cyanogen Mod!
My research in this forum seems to confirm my worries. There is only an unofficial version of this mod right?
And isn't the support for the "main" version (-> S5) always better than for sub versions like the S5+?
I am thinking about to make a complaint in order to get the S5.
What would you, the far more experienced, do?
oetzi
try this, almost same as cm but some more options, and official support

I wonder you went with Samsung and S5 if cyanogenmod is important to you. Samsung's phobea I had or still have are Galaxy Nexus, S 3(i9305 LTS with 2 GB of RAM) ,4 i9505, 5 (900f), Note 2, 3 and you can guess which is the only one with decent CM support.
I have still not tried CM on S5, but I definitely am on S3 and 4, and it has never worked really well. Bearable but not well. And as far as I can see it is the same situation with S5. There are issues with wifi and Bluetooth, camera as usual is not supported because they keep they TW shut for them self. I would like to be wrong here, because I prefer anything AOSP based to Touchwiz, but the problem was I didn't have much choice when I took S5.
For me, the killer feature of the Cyanogen Mod is the individual rights management which I can configure for every app.
@ad0dh67: Does Dokdo also have this opportunity?
@!crazy: I see your point, but this is too late now I guess
The initial question remains the same: Is the Cyanogen Mod version for the S5 better / more stable than for the S5+?
