[Q] S5 vs. S5+ - Custom Rom support (Cyanogen) - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I ordered a S5 and got the smartphone yesterday. However, I was suprised that it actually is a S5+ (G901F).
My first reaction was: Nice, I even got more than I wanted, but my second thought was: Is the Custom ROM support for the S5+ as good as for the S5?
I definitely want to install the Cyanogen Mod!
My research in this forum seems to confirm my worries. There is only an unofficial version of this mod right?
And isn't the support for the "main" version (-> S5) always better than for sub versions like the S5+?
I am thinking about to make a complaint in order to get the S5.
What would you, the far more experienced, do?
oetzi

try this, almost same as cm but some more options, and official support

I wonder you went with Samsung and S5 if cyanogenmod is important to you. Samsung's phobea I had or still have are Galaxy Nexus, S 3(i9305 LTS with 2 GB of RAM) ,4 i9505, 5 (900f), Note 2, 3 and you can guess which is the only one with decent CM support.
I have still not tried CM on S5, but I definitely am on S3 and 4, and it has never worked really well. Bearable but not well. And as far as I can see it is the same situation with S5. There are issues with wifi and Bluetooth, camera as usual is not supported because they keep they TW shut for them self. I would like to be wrong here, because I prefer anything AOSP based to Touchwiz, but the problem was I didn't have much choice when I took S5.

For me, the killer feature of the Cyanogen Mod is the individual rights management which I can configure for every app.
@ad0dh67: Does Dokdo also have this opportunity?
@!crazy: I see your point, but this is too late now I guess
The initial question remains the same: Is the Cyanogen Mod version for the S5 better / more stable than for the S5+?

A question or two...important!

Okay so my Note 2 is sold and I am buying the S4 (I9500) tomorrow or the day after, but I was shocked after going to the Development section! There is no Android Rev HD ROM for I9500 but I9505 version is there! Why?
Also more things are available for I9505, but for I9500 very least amount of mods! Since I used ARHD on my Note 2 I never ever used any other ROM, as it was so fluid (never thought Android could be that smooth!) and never went back to stock ROM! And I hate AOSP ROMs, so if I buy I9500 my option is to stay on Stock ROM now or what?
This could well be a deal breaker for me!
The i9500 is only available in cirtain countries and is isn't very favourable to devs because of all its closed source hardware. It's why cm etc find it a lot harder to develop for. You can get really good stock based ROMs such as omega etc but due to its restricted availability you won't get as many devs for them.
Would still be a really good buy though. Give it time, as contracts get cheaper over time there should be more interest in them
@jujuburi
Hi,
Welcome to the S4 forum.
Please check out the Help Thread for the S4 in my signature.
Senior Member 123hiten had the i9500, and managed to get hold of a i9505.
You might want to talk to him about how he was able to do that.

Yup, that got to me too, unfortunately i didn't do my homework first by checking the development section. One of the main reasons is the CPU chipset, and the amount of people who own the i9505. First it is easier as i understood to work with the snapdragon than the exynos and also most people which includes developers have the i9505 and the ROMs cant work on both devices because o the chipsets.
Now about lag, you dont need to worry, I am still in stock rom rooted and there is DEFINITELY no such thing as lag....runs smooth as butter, but i was still disappointed in the lack of ROMs which I like to flash for fun.
Kids, no fighting. If you don't like something, don't complain - move on. If there is something wrong, report.
As simple as it gets

Am I getting this right, not a single custom ROM for SM-A510F?

Hi, just wondering what's up. I'd kill for CM12 or 13 on my brand new a5 2016.. what gives?
thanks!
We waited more than a year for the A5 2015 edition to get roms, and there are only about 2 serious developers working on it. It is likely that you will get very little to zero support for your phone, even less if you have the Exynos variant. If you want big custom rom support, buy a flagship or a Nexus. That is the best thing you can do. And what I have realised is before you buy a new phone, first search the XDA forums to see which is more popular and which have the most support.

Hey bro, I'm waiting too for any custom rom on my a3 2016, coz i'm getting sick of using laggy and bad looking touchwiz.
Please Devs, do smething for our devices....
I've always used CM or CM-based custom roms on all my phones, but (never thought I would say this) I'm quite liking TouchWiz. Everything works, no bugs. Good stock apps like calendar, camera and email. Theme engine is good enough. Unbelievable battery life.
Just root, install xposed, and you're good.

:good: Absolutely right! And if you don't like TouchWiz you can use other launchers ... - I think the A5 is one of the best phones I ever bought and do not see the need to use a custom rom.

agree. I have used kf rom for several weeks . but now back to the stock rom
You can port CM by yourself. There are a lot of porting guides on the internet, but... there aren't developers because there aren't much people with that device, maybe later there will be some developer with that phone or maybe not. As jnvdh06 said u have to buy a nexus if you want lots of roms, because google release all sources

Updating possibilities for Samsung Galaxy Note 2

My note 2 is updated to 4.4.2. It is rooted. I have Xposed framework installed. I use the phone -as phone, for messaging (WhatsApp), browsing, note taking (Handwritten) - mostly using "Write" APP, and some illustrations using "Write" or sketching Apps. I use Google Handwriting Input as keyboard for English and Marathi (Indian Language).
The software is showing the age and phone has become slow. Cleaning provides some temporary relief. To address this "problem" and to experience the latest version of Android, I'm looking to update it to whatever is possible. I scanned through many threads and found out following:
1. There are quite a few Marshmallow ROMs for Note 2. CM 13 and Resurrection ROMS seem to be most used/discussed. There are few more (like Bliss), based on CM.
2. These ROMs, though provide latest Android version, do not provide the access to S pen.
3. For accessing S - pen DN4 seems to be the most preferred choice. As I understand, It is android version 4.4.4 - not the latest.
4. S-Pen accessibility/functionality is also available through SPenCommand APP (Paid). It's available for CyanogenMod, AOSP and MIUI ROMs.
I'd appreciate any help/suggestions on choice of choice of ROM and any experiences on using SPenCommand with any Marshmallow ROM. Any pointers on what could be pitfalls, or, nasty surprises, in the process are most welcome.
Thanks and Regards
Vikas Garud, Pune, India.
I've tried most of roms available for note 2
Miui/RR Rom/Rubbaband and much more :|
it looks like Eclipse Rom by Ac is the best out there, its based on 4.4.4 but heavily themed like s7/N5 MM .
go for it
Thanks Iskander_mal for sharing your experience!
Eclipse V8
Let me tell you my opinion as a heavy flasher on Note 2, S3 and some other phones that I own.
So we're talking about Note 2 now.
If you need new stuff, very high android experience gor for Unofficial CM13 builds by Trafalgar Square: what's not working now on he's latest build: gps, youtube in Chrome, SD Card as internal storage.
If you want something stable and fast but you don't really need the newest android go for the Official CM 11. You get OTA updates almost every 1-2 weeks and new security updates. Everything I tested so far works there.
In my opinion OCM11 and UCM13 are the best ROMs for you.
Eclipse ROM is themed and optimized with Agni Kernel. I'm not using it. I'm more into stock android because stock is faster.

Welcome [emoji4]
Sent from my SM-N910C using XDA-Developers mobile app
Thanks once again Iskander_mal. Just one question: Does this support S-Pen? Anything specific (APP?) required for getting the S-Pen functionality for scribbling?
Thanks,
Vikas Garud
Thanks "andrewKode" for detailed response. I am looking for something stable and fast. I'm not looking for cutting edge android features. Official CM11 seems to be the way to go for these requirements. Just one doubt: How do you get the S-Pen functionality? I don't need anything fancy - scribbling on some APP like "Write", or sketching on some APP would be sufficient for me. Off course, anything extra is welcome!
Thanks and regards

I remember when I first flashed CM10 on my galaxy note II back in early 2013, there was an app on Playstore called Papyrus. It almost had same features as the stock note taking app provided by Samsung. You can check it out.
Thanks

Thanks. I was under impression that the stylus itself may not be supported. I've played around with Papyrus and it's good. I'm not particular about Samsung apps. All that I'm looking for is ability of the styles (S-Pen) to scribble something. Your response has relieved me.
Vikas Garud.
All custom roms support Stylus. Some touchwiz based custom roms also support Air Command features.
Note II was released with android jelly bean 4.1.1 which had a strange bug called Sudden Death Syndrome. That bug prompted me to root my phone and install custom ROM in it. But after flashing CM10 I missed Samsung's note taking app as I was by that time so much used to it. I was also looking for note taking app and came across papyrus.
Can someone help me root my Sprint (boost mobile) note 2? I know nothing about rooting or roms or any of that. Just letting everyone know. I'm not very tech friendly when it comes to rooting, roms, flashing or any of that. Thanks in advance! Oh and what would the benefits of rooting and installing those roms be? I have noticed my note 2 hasn't received any updates from Samsung like the person said it would when I bought it from them??

Marshmallow 5Gghz hotspot / Fast Charging
Im still looking for an appropriate upgrade for my CM 10.1 (4.2.2) install on my n7100.
I'm stuck on it since I've had quite the charging issues over time.
I use NEAK kernel to ensure fast charging (2100 mA) adjustable up to 2900 mA (but I don't know how realistic that is to achieve.
Any ideas on fast charging Kernels/ROMs?
Anyway I'm hoping that a new Marshmallow ROM gives access to establishing a 5Ghz wifi hotspot on the device.
In theory the API from Android 6.0 allows this.
Has anyone tried this OR if using a MM based ROM could you have a look?
I have that feeling though I'm not going to be able to get both
DN4 v2.1 makes you feel that you've got a touchwizz for note 4, seems to works great but I've flashed my efs also after flashing adblock host, wifi is stuck 15mins after boot... otherwise of you like samsung stuuf it's fun. btw I'm a total nub!
Then I've tried CM12.1 lollipop by Ivan, everything works, flashing host file with moab seems to introduce latency... Sometimes it did freeze. at this time VR was broken.
Now I stick with CM13 still by Ivan, even though it's not the latest, everything works flawlessly so far! As usual adding a few MB size file host is not perfect for latency flashed batch cm13, gapps nano, moab after being fully wiped.
Even if VR didn't work, it's no longer an issue.
By the way you may need the latest Bootloader, mine is PC1. There is a cap in BL, once reached a special version, you may not be able the remove it easily. I havent tried to remove that, because I'm a total nub and I've got only my daily device to play with
Globally, I was expecting much more trouble! Just try to fly everthing in a row, otherwise it did added extra freezes and latency in my case
hey i went through same problem as you are now.
i have note 2 and i am running resurrection remix marshmallow and to be honest i think its a better option to run this rom on our ageing device than going for stock 4.4.4 roms.
as for spen functionality ,look at my signature, there is a link that provides alternatives to touchwiz/spen functionality.
Honestly RR-MM is the best rom there for our phone<<<<personal preference of course
just try roms and see what fits your needs.
here is a link, which may help you for spen cynogen or aosp by fizzingbees

My friend, listen to me. Do not listen to anyone else here. If it wasn't for Cyanogenmod 13 and Android 6.0 I would have thrown my phone into trash by now. It was so bad and crappy and laggy (and all Androids before Lollipop were). You know people at google work hard to issue out new versions of android to improve performance and everything. Lollipop was a huge jump! They (samsung) didn't give us update to Lollipop or newer because you are expected to buy new Note 4 or something.
Recently I had to revert to stock rom (4.4) for a while and I couldn't believe my eyes. It was the same hardware, the same phone! How could just software make such a huge difference?
Now I see you use s-pen and that may be a problem (i lost my s-pen a while ago so I don't know how it goes).
Anyway, install any rom with android 6.0 and you'll see yorself what I'm talking about. If you don't like it you can always go back, but who in the world would do that?

regarding your battery charging,i just cant begin to understand why you want to charge your battery at such high mah, given that samsung stock kernel charges it around 1800-1900mah. I hope its not a phony kernel feature otherwise its a miracle that your battery hasnt exploded yet.
i am using agni kernel and you can max charge at 2000mah which is pretty fast given my phone charges from dead to 100% in 1 hr 30min.
for 5gh wifi api,i hope you know what you are talking about. i am in no way expert but having a api and actually having a hardware that support and make use of that api are two different concepts.
i have MM ,so if you want me to,i can check it((if you tell me how to))

Why touchwiz port roms for s5 is always android 6.0.1?

I got this question while I was searching for a rom with android 7.0 but with grace/dreamux, another question I got, is if will be possible to port the new features of android p beta (Samsung experience, good lock 2018, multitasking etc) to s5, thanks.
@unkupo This is because touchwiz ROMs are officially released by Samsung, with that said each device has its lifespan that Samsung provides updates support.......the device in question here is quite old, Samsung felt it wasn't capable of running their 7.0 smoothly without any lag and drawbacks due to hardware limitations...hence no S5 touchwiz 7.0....8.0....etc.....as for your other question, I don't know about all that, but I do know that lineage 16 (android 9) custom ROM will be available for the s5, well it is there as I write this, but not ready for daily use

glad to be of help, I hear you on that bro though the best thing about getting the latest ROM is the security updates provided, at the moment I use DotOs 2.4 .....haven't looked back since I moved from touchwiz, in fact the moment I got my s5 back then, I immediately changed out touchwiz

Repeating myself: Help to install Marshmallow on my old Galaxies

I think I may have posted the following in the wrong thread, so I am re-posting it here
(Here is the original post
https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...help-to-install-marshmallow-galaxies-t4103977
======================
Hello, First, I hope everyone is safe & sane.
Okay, so, I'm not sure if I'm in the right place, but I'm sure you'll let me know if I'm not.
I have 2 old galaxy phones - S3 mini (G730A) and S4 mini SGH-I257). The S4 is the one I actually plan to use. The S3 is the one I will experiment with, so that I don't mess up my S4.
Both phones are Kitkat versions (4.4.2) and I would like the S4 to be the marshmallow version. I read online that one could do this; it seems to be called side-loading.
To start, though, I'd like to make the S3 a marshmallow version, and if that goes well, I'll do the S4.
Can anyone point me in the correct direction on how to do this? What to download? Where to download it from? Etc.
Alright, I look forward to your reply. Thank you!
P.S. If you're wondering: the S4 mini is my phone of choice because of its small size - my mildly arthritic hands can handle this size much better than bigger phones. So if I can't accomplish this task, I'll just leave it as is; it is currently working fine. It would be nice to be able to use a few apps of interest to me, but I will do without them if need be.
Okay dude, first off - I don't think you understand how roms works. It doesn't matter how stable any rom is on the S3 Mini, it isn't an S4 mini and that rom isn't reflective of the experience you will have on the S4 Mini. In a nutshell: it's apples to oranges.
Second, this is general. this belongs in Q/A. Literally a stickied title post says no questions in general.
Finally, I reccomend Cyanogenmod 13 or LOS 13 for the S4 Mini if you need MM. However, Lineage OS 15.1 (here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-mini/orig-development/rom-lineageos-15-0-s4-mini-t3702272) is running great on my phone better than MM, and now I'm getting 3 hours of SoT without even trying. I swear there was another thread for i9195 but i don't know.
Thank you for your reply; but first, I should say that I am a "she" - so not a "dude". And, I do know that whatever I might do to my S3 I cannot do the exact same thing to my S4. I just want to start off with my S3 to see if the steps actually work. If they work, then I'll know how it all works and I can engage in the correct steps to my S4.
As far as this post being in "General", the system said that because I am new, I could only use General. I did post it somewhere else, as the beginning of my post says, but I did say that I wasn't sure if I was in the correct place -- this is not the easiest forum to navigate.
Thanks for the info and the link; I'll check it out.
