Signal increase or modem upgrade? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Does anyone know how to boost signal or increase power of antenna!
Here is my problem:, I have a rooted Sprint Galaxy S4 and I work at Atlanta Airport.. My meter shows I have 3 bars and 4 g is connected but I have miserable speeds not even 1meg a second..... My coworkers have Verizon and t mobile and there's be there incredible!
Does anyone know of any fixes or tweaks that I can do to boost my power to my antenna? I do not mind if it uses too much battery because my phone is plugged in most of the day . I have flashed mf9 and now on mja hoping that the baseband would change something for me but nothing works. Anybody know anything that will help? Thank you all in advance.
Sincerely, hopeless

If it's stock, you can just go into settings and update all of your settings. Restart the phone and see if your signal has increased.
If not, you can flash a new model via Odin.

That's the answer to your question. But seriously, there is nothing you can do to improve on an issue that is on Sprint's end, without changing carriers. Don't waste your time flashing modems. The price we pay for unlimited data is Sprint's crappy network. To give you an idea, I can't get 4G in downtown Manhattan.

? Try the latest modern, nae. Update your prl and profile after flashing it.

Some phones have (had anyway) a jack under the battery for a real external antenna. If your phone has that you could get a little microwave antenna from a local radio shop clip it on and put them both on your desk. A bit cumbersome but this is your only real solution unless a new tower is added by your carrier.

What are you getting on 3g op?

I realized that flashing different modems is a waste of time a long time ago, back when I had my Evo and S2. It doesn't do anything significant regarding network speeds or signal strength (that can't be attributed to network load or latency). Anything you do to your device will not fix Sprint's crappy network. While I have seen speeds similar to what you posted (and better), I average less than 10 Mbps on LTE, and that is assuming I get LTE in the first place. This has not changed through the various baseband updates that my phone received.
For the record, I am on NAE, and have been trying to get 4G in parts of downtown Manhattan since I got my device a year ago. Still waiting. If not for unlimited data, I would have dumped sprint years ago. My GF has the same phone on AT&T, and gets LTE practically everywhere. There are places that she has LTE where my phone struggles with 3G.

I never seem to be in 3g...it always shows 4G and 3/4 bars. I've purchased the force roaming prl helper and it does not help data. Nor do I think it is supposed to. I was only doing it so I could put a lot of roaming data on the account so that sprint would try and kick me out of my contract!
I think I will go with T Mobile.

I had flashed MJA and mk2 with no help. I tried NAE but could not get wifi working on it so I gave up. I just don't believe that NAE will be any better than the other ones so I gave up!

Seriously. You are pathetic to force roam your phone so Sprint would kick you out for excessive roaming. Grow some and pay your ETF if you are serious about leaving sprint or trying out a different company.
Just based on that sentence I personally refuse to help you out at all.

With two phones it is close to $650! You pay it for me smart guy! Why should I have to pay, when Sprint is not providing a service that I am paying for? Would you not be upset if you are paying $150 a month or something that sucks?

You know what you signed up for. If you didn't know Sprint was crap in your area I have to say that is your own fault for not doing some research to see what provides the best and most affordable service before you signed the contract. Since you signed it suck it up and deal with it. I have 5 lines with Sprint so it would be over $2000 to pay ETF if I planned on leaving , which I dont. And I'm paying almost $80 more a month. Yeah sometimes the service does suck and 3G data speeds can be horrific at times. But I know Sprint provides me with the most reliable service for texting and making calls (the true function of a phone) for the cheapest price. So I deal with it.
You can sell the two phones and that will cover most of the ETF. Then move on to another company. Did you even think or consider this option?

How do I get at&t to fix their tower?

When I first joined At&t I was pleasantly surprised at data speeds I got at my office and home. 120 - 200 KBps at work and 300 - 500 KBps at home.
However beginning in February network speeds have dropped to just 2 - 8 KBps at my office. Network speeds remain unchanged at home.
I have called At&t on numerous occasions requesting that they repair the local tower to no avail.
It will be one month since the tower stopped working on March 7th.
I am at the beginning of a 2 yr contract. What are my options.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Are there any coworkers/colleagues with the sake problem, or just you? Because you can't do much on your own, but when there are others with the same problem you can call at&t again.

keep on it then they will get it done
Well I suspect that at&t will never fix the tower. Regardless they have until 3/10/11 or i'll be leaving.

Very funny. I probably would if I could.
I decided to run speedtest while taking a walk near my job and I have discovered that the data dead zone covers most of little Italy in the Bronx.
Oh and i'll be joining you at Tmobile .
I don't like what I have been hearing about Verizons plans to arbitrarily throttle data speeds over it LTE network.
AT&T
I've yet to find a way to inspire AT&T to fix small problems. Good luck with a tower.
actually there is something you can do yourself. im actually an AT&T employee, i work in a rural area, so we get many complaints about signal strength, if you actually call the big office, and tell them your situation, they will send you a "micro cell". what that is, is basically a cellphone amplifier for your house, it will boost signal strength. were currently the only US company to offer this. i hope this helps

Yea, that's cool, but what I suspect is happening in this guy's case is over-saturation of the AT&T network which is a common problem. I was with AT&T from like 1994 until 20010 when I finally ditched them for Verizon. (Funny how I as soon as I switched, 3G was turned on in my area) Where I live, I'm in a rural area and with 3G speeds under AT&T during off peak hours, I can see speeds up to 3Mbps and higher, but during the day you can just forget getting anything done. If I go into town, I'm hosed constantly.
I have family that works for AT&T as well as myself doing some consulting work for them, and their business plan in my area just sucks.
It appears that at&t has instituted a partial fix network speeds have increased from only 2 - 8 KB/s to 30 - 45 KB/s.
Which suggest that they have restored 3g but have yet to restore 4g.

Nine months to install a tower??? What is at&t smoking?
I was on vacation a few years ago and I watched Sprint install a new tower in 3 days and initialize it a week later.
I would have stayed with Sprintpcs but there service is very weak where I work.

more of this. iphones take screen shots when the power and home buttons are pressed at the same time. have a number of these people send you the screen shots and then send them all to at&t. its really the only way to do it. do it relentlessly. do not stop emailing them until they respond with a real answer and not an automated answer.
ps- i know you said it doesnt really effect her because she doesnt really use her phone for data. keep in mind that it doesnt really matter, and you can still use her screenshot as evidence that you are not receiving the full service you pay for every month.
Thanks for all your replies. The tower has apparently been fixed or a new one added. Network speeds have actually increased to 220 - 300 KB/s.
So i guess switching to tmobile wont be necessary after all.

Letter of warning from sprint concerning roaming.

Gosh, got a letter of warning from sprint yesterday. For a couple of months I'd been using the .00001 hack to use Verizon's network. A couple if weeks ago I switched to a normal prl.
They sent me a letter explaing that if ididnt trim back my data roaming, they would shut off my phone. Having done a cost comparison, I can't afford to switch companies. I'm on a sprint employees plan that was linked to sero. Plus the other folks don't allow unlimited data anymore.
Just wanted to give a caution to those of us using the prl hack, they are watching. Thankfully I'd made the switch before I even got the letter and now have roaming blocked with cyanomod v7
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
You are lucky that you only received a warning. There are plenty of reports here from people that were not given a choice to terminate service with Sprint. They most defiantly keep a lookout for excessive roaming.
I wonder if it matters on location or how you use their data. I used to do a lot of roaming and never got a letter like that.
Also do you mind linking me to the roam/prl hack?

I actually asked a Sprint rep if i could force my phone to roam permanently on Verizon and what the repercussions were. She asked me kinda stunned, why would you want to do that? I told her so i could get the data speeds that sprint can't provide. She told me that they would catch it immediately because many, many people are doing that.

I've been using the 0001 PRL and my speeds have improved a decent bit. I seem to be able to buffer Netflix and play an online game like Galcon with less noticeable lag.
The sad thing is, right when I got the EVO 4G, within the first few months, Sprint's 3G speeds easily beat Verizon's. Verizon's speeds are good, but not great, but Sprint's network has been so congested that it merely offers mediocre speeds for me now.
I also don't get voice signal with Sprint at my new place, whereas the Verizon prl gives me signal.
I'll just switch back to a Sprint PRL as soon as I get a warning letter.
I switched back because I didn't see a noticeable speed difference in my area.

It works and the dev is one of the most responsive i've ever seen (he lurks on xda, in fact he might post here) so......... Buy it.
Be sure to run roam control once before you need it to configure the license so you arent up the creek without a paddle in a low signal area as the app can't check the license without internet access.

Get an airave to fix the signal. Sprint will send you a free one.
You can use Qpst to force load a verizon prl. There is a thread on the evo forum walking you through it. I would say roam control will be much easier/better solution though because you can witch back and forth as needed. Using the vzw prl will force you onto the vzw network 100% of the time.

Not going to pay for an airave even though they say its free. Price for an app is not a problem. Every other type of app has more than one to choose from. I'm sure the dev is a good guy, I just like to have choices

I love the app, but I don't find the dev responsive from my only e-mail to him.
A couple of months ago, I sent him a note with a suggestion or two, and no response. I was kind of disappointed, but was just hoping that he read them and was going to implement them in a future relaese.
Why wouldn't you use an Airave ? You can call 877.775.4886 and let them know your signal blows at home. I use my Airave with four phones on it currently and it's great always having full bars and no dropped calls even in my basement. Give it a try...
I'm in an area with decent Verizon but crappy Sprint coverage. I've heard forcing roam is used to get booted sans ETF. I'd love to do it but don't wanna get a letter from Sprint. Whatdaya think?
Currently, only good roaming app is roam control.
Like above post said, there is way to manually load up 00001 Verizon PRL using QPST. There is a thread here or in dev section. This gives you good speed but you are on Verizon 100% of the time and I heard that Sprint might catch you and block 3G access somehow.
What I am using is 11115 PRL. This is Sprint PRL that let you roam 3G. Normally when there is Sprint tower nearby, this PRL will not let you roam, but using the app, I can force roam. I use it when Sprint is giving me ****ty data.

I am actually experimenting the possibility, but I think Sprint is blocking my access to Verizon 3G when I am trying. Whenenver I start to use heavy data stuff like netflix, the 3G roaming becomes unstable and disconnects. So I just use it when I am in need of data but Sprint is giving me way to slow connection.
I just wish our phones would react properly to Roam Control. I'm in Central Florida and apparently it only forces roaming to one frequency, not all frequencies.
Q: When I select "roam only", why does the phone have no signal?
A: Chances are you have a Samsung phone, right? Samsung phones have different behavior - when in "roam only", they only roam on the 800mhz frequency band. There are areas in the US that are 1900mhz only, which means that Samsung phones will not get a signal in those areas.

Oh, I understand, it's just disappointing... I also used to have a TP2 and loved the working forced roaming on it... Funny how a 4yo phone has more functionality than a <previously> flaghship 4G phone... If the HTC Shift had a larger screen I would have gone with that.
One. Its not free. I'm paying 130 per month, shouldn't have to install tower and pay taxes on it. Two. Not into helping neighbors receive better signal by pigybacking on MY internet that I'M paying for.
My question is still the same. Is roam control the only app. Pretty sure its is good. Just like any other apps, some work better for some people and not other.

You can control who has access to both your wireless network and your airave. I'm sure you already know that so I say TROLL
Well, cs said I would be paying the tax on it, and I couldnt control who has access. Still no answers on whether or not there are other apps.

So for the last time, yes, Roam Control IS CURRENTLY the only roaming app.
Yes you can control who accesses it. I currently only have family and friends numbers allowed to make calls. It is simple and the csr is an idiot. Nothing new.
Thank you zett, will call them back. As for the question being answered about other apps, it hasn't. It was only said roam control was the best, as if there is more than one. Not looking to ruffle feathers, but I am able to comprehend what is written. When it is said the only good roam control app is roam control, it implies the existence of others. A simple yes or no will have done. Thank you all, and may the best of the day find you.

What are the rates? It's kind of stupid that they won't even let you shop if they don't serve your area.
EDIT: Ok, the coverage map down the page says they cover my city. When I type in my zip in that map, it locates it fine and I have coverage. When I got to shop for plans and type my zip in, it says they don't cover me. Seems like they need to update/sync their database. Although, I'm getting the same message that I got a few weeks ago about being only in 2 cities at the moment, maybe they just need to update their validator on the page?

And I can personally vouch for this exact scenario. AT&T covers the entire city of Marshall and all of the outskirts, whereas T-Mobile only covers the "downtown" area. I live JUST outside of downtown and get NO service whatsoever. I told T-Mobile to kiss off and have been using H2O Wireless for maybe a week or so and it's been nothing but pleasurable. The service "just works." I'll definitely be switching to AIO when it's available nationwide because their customer service seems to be state-side, whereas H2O is outsourced and VERY difficult to work with and they have no patience. Definitely crap customer service but hey, you get what you pay for I guess?

From what I read aio is actually owned by at&t kinda like how gosmart mobile is owned by tmo. So hopefully it will be decent. Even though max DL speeds are capped a 4 mb/s, that's way more than I need just to surf the web or occasionally watch a YouTube video. Plus I'm getting real sick of tmos crappy building penetration & low-latency data connection.

All right. Old thread, I know but I didn't know where else to ask this and I figured it'd be better to revive an old thread rather than make my own.
I really want to use Aio this coming month (billing cycle ends in a few days) but I'm having troubles finishing my order. As posted earlier, I live in SD, not one of the "beta cities". I can now get into the site, shop plans and devices and whatever. The only problem I have right now is I can't check out. I'm in my cart and I press the "Continue" button, and nothing happens. I don't get redirected, I don't get a prompt, nothing. I'm just wondering if anyone else is getting that problem, or if maybe it's doing another location check, and I'm failing it (because they are either not nationwide yet or they haven't updated this page to reflect that they are). Or maybe they removed the window popup that says I'm not in those beta cities but forgot to remove the actual check?
In any case, if someone has some spare time, could they go to their site, add something to the cart, and try checking out? Just see if you can get to a screen that prompts for a payment method or something? I get nowhere and I want to try their 7gb plan.
And side-bar: OP, did you actually go with this service? How's the quality? Are you satisfied?
I ordered a sim and the $55 plan last night. I've been using straight talk byod for well over a year and it's just slow and annoying. I'd rather pay a little more and hopefully get better speeds.
Who's used it? Comments?
Thanks

I'm in Cape Canaveral Florida, and I switched to AIO for one month and the data speeds were under 1Mbps!!! I called their tech support and they said there was an outage in the area and it would be fixed in a few days, data speeds got up to just over 1Mbps and stayed there for the remainder of my month. I even had my IMEI changed to a 4G phone to see if that was the issue, tried several APN settings, with no luck. I went back to T-mobile. AIO had better coverage but the data was just too slow.

T-Mobile here has crap service where I am. Att and all the mvno's they have are the best around here. I don't need super fast speeds, just stability. It will be here Monday says UPS so we'll see.
They shipped my stuff ups 2nd day air for free.

Im thinking of switching to simple mobile. They say bring your own phone and they can switch you from any factory unlocked device. Not sure if it works with the N3 but their prices seem really good. 60 bucks for unlimited everything.

I think pretty much any carrier offers prepaid, if you bring a device, or buy one outright with no contract.
In that case I would look and see what kind of reception you get with sprint and tmobile. Only ones still w/unlimited data.
If one of those gets you a good signal I'd go with that. Otherwise straight talk or something like that.

And what city is that? My magic crystal ball is broken. How can someone recommend a carrier if we don't know where the hell you are or what carriers are available in your "city."

Thanks I was just wondering what other providers will work with Verizon phones
Hows the Tmobile service in your area? Im using my Verizon Note 3 on Metropcs which runs off Tmobile. The service is great here in the Houston areas. I get 4gLTE but you might not, depending on your area. At the very least you should get HSPA+. I use about 30gb of 4gLTE data a month and never get throttled. I pay $60 a month with taxes included.

As others have asked where are you located? It looks like Memphis. T-Mobile if you live in a big city. However if you every leave to smaller towns you are screwed. People I know have gone to Straight Talk said the same towers of all the big carriers is a joke as they deal with allot of dropped calls or no service.
Yeah I might just pick up a Verizon prepaid sim for now
I here simple wireless is pretty decent.
Anyone have tmobile on Verizon phone? How's mms and data
