Letter of warning from sprint concerning roaming. - EVO 4G General

Gosh, got a letter of warning from sprint yesterday. For a couple of months I'd been using the .00001 hack to use Verizon's network. A couple if weeks ago I switched to a normal prl.
They sent me a letter explaing that if ididnt trim back my data roaming, they would shut off my phone. Having done a cost comparison, I can't afford to switch companies. I'm on a sprint employees plan that was linked to sero. Plus the other folks don't allow unlimited data anymore.
Just wanted to give a caution to those of us using the prl hack, they are watching. Thankfully I'd made the switch before I even got the letter and now have roaming blocked with cyanomod v7

You are lucky that you only received a warning. There are plenty of reports here from people that were not given a choice to terminate service with Sprint. They most defiantly keep a lookout for excessive roaming.

I wonder if it matters on location or how you use their data. I used to do a lot of roaming and never got a letter like that.
Also do you mind linking me to the roam/prl hack?

I actually asked a Sprint rep if i could force my phone to roam permanently on Verizon and what the repercussions were. She asked me kinda stunned, why would you want to do that? I told her so i could get the data speeds that sprint can't provide. She told me that they would catch it immediately because many, many people are doing that.

I personally dont get above 100kbps down or up on sprint, even with full bars. When roaming on Verizon, I can easily get 2mbps down, even with 1 bar.

I've been using the 0001 PRL and my speeds have improved a decent bit. I seem to be able to buffer Netflix and play an online game like Galcon with less noticeable lag.
The sad thing is, right when I got the EVO 4G, within the first few months, Sprint's 3G speeds easily beat Verizon's. Verizon's speeds are good, but not great, but Sprint's network has been so congested that it merely offers mediocre speeds for me now.
I also don't get voice signal with Sprint at my new place, whereas the Verizon prl gives me signal.
I'll just switch back to a Sprint PRL as soon as I get a warning letter.

I switched back because I didn't see a noticeable speed difference in my area.

Yep same here. I have a constantly open ticket at Sprint for their poor data. I told them this when asking if i could roam permanently. I told them that roaming on any other network was faster then Sprint.

Where is the link for changing the PRL to .0001

EVO connected threw Clearwire relm, 10mps down 1.5 up! IS SPRINT LIMITING BANDWIDTH?

I purchased internet service straight from Clearwire and changed my evo settings on the 4G side exclusively to Clearwire settings. My best speed with Sprint was 3.5mps now I am getting ten mps? What am I missing here? My brother has a TMobile g1 that was always getting better speeds than me. That promted me to want to research this. I am told by Clearwire reps that Sprint uses a technology called MIP to help lock on to towers which can cause slower speeds. Anyone aware of this MIP technology?

Although, didn't Sprint claim us EVO people who were paying the $10 extra would get "unlimited" speed? Well unlimited within the capabilities of the 4G service anyway.
Wouldn't that be fraud then?

Sprint does not cap download speeds. They do currently cap upload speeds to 1mbps.
no they dont cap, they throttle the network which is just as bad, in my area there are 4 antennas which blanket the whole town, one side is closer to 1Mbps the other 3-4Mbps, the other 2 in between 1-3 but in peraland just 2 streets down theres a 5th that covers just that area of pearland and there i reach 8-9 and where i am the evo wont stay on 4g longer then a minute before losing the signal
@simon what do you mean by change the settings to clear? i thought that you just turn it on and off...theres a settings page for 4g?
gotten 8-9mbps on evo's at best buy and around the sprint store location. Getting about 3-5mbps about 5-10miles from those locations
look at my sig.. i had a mt3g and now have the evo. i use mobilespeedtest for the mytouch because i wasnt getting good speed results with speedtest app. on the evo the speed test app was better
forgot to answer the mip tech thing. when i had an issue with my phone i had to reset the tower from where i purchased the phone to where i live. i had to drive 150 miles round trip for the phone. when i got back it was all messed up. had to reset some settings like update prl and stuff to get the new tower connected. im guessing everytime you go somewhere and plan to stay for a while or youre getting slow speeds try rebooting phone and see if that helps. but anyway you already switched, so yah
I got 11mb in silicone valley.

It appears that there is there is a speed increase by merely changing the realm to clearwire-wmx.net from sprintpcs.com. In addition to speed, ping times were reduced from 400ms to 100ms.

Clearwire to drop retail, focus on corporate world!

I think we all knew this was coming, but I wonder if we will feel the effects of it, as if we don't already. My 4G is lucky to hit 1 down here in Idaho; 3G has been 200kbps down for the past few months, but 3G up is always at least 1mbps - soo stupid.
I what kind of effect this will have on their subsidiary, Clear Wireless, that sells 4G specifically to consumer/retail... they are my current ISP for home and laptop...
Corporate world.... to people such as Sprint and Comcast.... I don't see how this could be bad.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/wsj-clearwire-moving-away-from-retail-will-concentrate-on-netw/
WSJ says that the move may make Sprint more comfortable investing more cash in the company since they'll no longer be giving off the appearance that they're competing head-to-head on the customer level. Investment is exactly what Clearwire needs to survive right now, and whether it comes from Sprint or another national carrier that's in the market for 4G spectrum, you know what they say: money is money.

You could argue that all carriers are slow. It depends on the tower, prl, and etc, as well as how much you tweak your phone's radio-dependent files, but ruling out those factors, it truly does matter on your data plan. Most, if not all carriers cap your speeds when you're on unlimited plans, those who are on data limits are the ones who truly get no cap, although it doesn't matter because they have a limit, so its as if they're capped anyway.

Sprint claims they don't cap under any circumstances. I think the problem is that Sprint simply doesn't know how to maintain their network well enough to keep up with the demand.
I've whined about this endlessly but I'll give a little example of what I'm talking about. My wife and I drove back to our apartment in the city from upstate NY this morning. We had Spotify going the entire time and at no point did we have any skips or gaps in songs during playback. As soon as we got in our neighborhood, however, the song we were listening to cut began getting choppy before eventually cutting out completely. In the time it took us to find a parking spot - about 5 or so minutes - the song cut out for about 4:50 before coming back with a choppy signal. Sprint has told me a few dozen times that there's a problem with a tower in this neighborhood that somehow never gets fixed. Let's face it, if Sprint can't get their network working reliably in NYC, what does that say about their competence?
The problem is Sprint hasn't invested in their network or backhaul since they came out with data plans back in 2003-2004.

The mere insinuation that Sprint would be slow [in some areas as slow at 50k] on purpose is...well... I'll be nice and say it isn't smart.
I think sprint is playing smart by saying unlimited data for ad but actually they can only serve very slow speeds everybody.
this in turn make me use less data because I rely on my wifi. A win win situation for the sprint but not for customers.

not sure if this is there intention per se but there's certainly some truth to it. I've got friends who have AT&T iPhones and they routinely go over 5 gigs of data in a month with streaming and whatnot. I've never cracked 600 megs with my Epic because the data speeds are too slow - why would I try to download several gigabytes of data when my downstream tops out a .30 Mbps? when I can get on 4G it's great but it usually knocks me off intermittently until I just give up and switch back to 3G.
I'm just waiting for tons of new iPhone users come in and swarm the Sprint severs and experience the true unlimited data with 10~500kbps speed.

If they tried to give full speed to everyone, we would all be taxing the bandwidth, creating a data traffic jam - no data for anyone. (this isn't necessarily an accurate description, I can't claim to know all - but the concept is sound)
The bandwidth is inherently shared, so they have to make sure that everyone gets enough to consider it more than useless.
There is no such thing as truly unlimited bandwidth... Anyone remember when cable internet first came out? It was fast as hell, until prices came down and a few of my neighbors got on board

I'm sure everything you are saying is true. The problem is that Sprint claims they don't limit bandwidth or throttle at all. And it's the line of bulls--t from Sprint that angers me more than their pathetically slow service. That they can't just come forward and speak the truth rather than trying to lure customers in with false promises is a deceptive business practice.
It should be class action for all not just iPhone ppl on sprint.

Sprint to delay 4G LTE, what a shock!

http://www.pcworld.com/article/245561/sprint_delays_4g_lte_rollout.html
The good news, if one can take seriously any statements coming from Overland Park, KS., is that Sprint will support 4G through 2015. This, of course, like the terms of our contracts, is subject to change at any time for any reason. I guess the $1.5 billion "Investment" in Clear, anticipated legal fees and class-action payouts in light of the C.I.Q. melt-down, and not-to-be-realized data mining profits have taken their toll.
Have you forgotten some old proverbs:
Honesty is the best policy
Cheaters never prosper
The cover-up is worse than the crime
How about trying a new one,
Our customers can handle the truth.
End of rant.
The LTE uncertainty is why I am holding off on an upgrade till at least late 2012.

It's why I'm switching to Verizon after the first of the year. They already have working 4g that gets 20mbps down.

And to add to that they just purchased a large amount of spectrum to use for lte. I'm 90% going to switch to Verizon when my contract ends next October. Unless sprint pulls something really good out of their ass..

I use a ton of data so ATT or Verizon isn't an option. I'm fine with my evo through most of 2012 until the LTE phones come out. I'm confused about some of the posts in here though. Sure, 20mps is awesome....but doesn't that mean you just hit the cap sooner?

No, its just how much data you can pull in chunks. Whether you download a 100mb file at 500kb/s or 25Mb/s , its the same amount of data, you'll just get it faster at 25Mb/s.
I wish I was getting 500kbps lol I live in the Indy area and can't get ****

Since vz data is not unlimited you actually do hit the cap faster. I know if i had 4g or lte i would be jammin on that data!

If that's how they're operating, they're literally robbing you.
Sprints data is unlimited. Verizon and att have a capped plan. You get x amount of data for x amount of money. If you go over you pay. I like sprint. I live in a rural are and roam off a verizon tower. I still dont hit the data roaming limit and only the voice roaming limit once. And i have 9 lines on two plans.

Yes but our unlimited data means nothing if you can't get any data to begin with I love sprints plan but hate their service right now its unfortunate since I'm generally happy except for my data speeds

I get sweet speeds on WiMax and good speeds on 3G. I'm sticking with Sprint since I routinely use more than 5GB of data each month. Every month a bit more. Soon I'll be over 6GB/mo.
Although, all bets are off if they don't get the Galaxy Nexus by Feb.
How much data does an average person used in a month? For all carriers?

And their highest data plan can be used up in 30 minutes at that speed lol

Wait until there is network congestion and lets see the speeds then. Currently in Indianapolis I have way better 3G speeds then version does and no caps and 4G though not official as it's still under Clear but it's 11Mb down all day..
When Sprint launched 4G in St. Louis and Chicago the speeds were a lot faster then they are now that there is more users on the network. Also faster the speed the faster you will hit their cap and the faster you will be complaining because you have to pay the overages.
$30 a month for 2GB vs. $10 a month for unlimited. The numbers don't lie but like the old saying goes a fool and his money are soon parted.
I've used different radios and all that I'm by no means a noob my friend don't get me wrong if I could I would stay but unfortunately I'm at my best 1mbps and I only get that late at night during the day when I'm up 200k at best its maddening

Dont feel so bad guys, some people have it worst. My best download speeds most of the time is around 48kbps on a good day I'll be at 129kbps
