Hey guys, I was searching the interwebs for some general unlocking info and I found this from a couple years ago. Pretty interesting I think, what happened to this? Are they actually reflashing phones in-store? As far as the "gradual opening of the US wireless market"...it's gradual indeed

MetroPCS will allow you to use some CDMA handsets from other providers, yes. But you don't get data; you'll have to figure out how to do that yourself. I know plenty of folks who put OG Droids and EVOs on Ghettro, though I don't know why... 1xRTT is pretty miserable, way too slow for a real smartphone... and their LTE isn't compatible with Verizon LTE handsets afaik.

It's the same principle, each carrier runs their network on different frequencies, except most who use the same technology also use the same texting/phone frequencies.
If Metro had the same 3G bands as Verizon, a Verizon phone would work fine.
MetroPCS doesn't have EV-DO at all.
Yes they do. if you are using their latest .prl (3025) and your phone is 3G capable, you will get 3G in the rare places where it is available. i live in nyc and did not get 3g on metro unless i went to Brooklyn . i used the speedtest app and it got 300ish kbps on an evdo network. not bad speed for metropcs, but very slow compared to what im using now.

There are two stores around me that do it. $50 to get your phone on there network. Only one of them does the data. Not sure how much they charge. But it's not officially done by metro. It's individuals who work in the store and the money goes to them.

They are an MVNO of T-Mobile. To be honest, I would just go with T-Mobile's monthly 4G plans instead of Simple but to each his own. Some people swear by them.

What's double data. I typically use around 150 gb a month. That's why I like unlimited.
I met a guy recently on Simple Mobile and he seemed happy, I'm thinking of switching soon. I mean, unlimited 3G data, text and talk for $40 a month including international texting? Considering my phone only does 3G (Vibrant) anyways...
But, I also don't use that much data.

They have a promo where if you order 2GB for 30$ you automatically get 4GB and, pay for 5GB ($50) get 10GB, and so on....
ALSO: To anyone thinking of Simple mobile go with the higher priced option. The 40$ dollar option doesn't give you access to 4G speeds (T-Mobile's HSPA+ in this case) even if your phone is only 3G capable you will see a speed boost.

I'm looking for a cheap prepaid network based with GSM so that I can get off my family's plan once out contract is up and save them some money. I want to buy an unlocked Note or Nexus to use on the network. Mainly all I want is a decent amount of Data (2GB would work fine cause I hardly even use half a gb a month on Sprint), unlimited texting(I text alot), and maybe around 450 minutes for calling. Plus I want to be able to keep the phone number I have now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and any links to websites with details would be even better. Thanks in advance!

That was exactly my thing; left my family's Sprint plan for Straight Talk AT&T and absolutely loving it. Unlimited text, Unlimited minutes, and psuedo-Unlimited data (Over 2GB is getting into cancellation territory, but with you're usage you're more than safe). About $50 a month after taxes. Make sure you pick "AT&T Compatible SIM" when you buy from http://straighttalk.com so you get AT&T coverage. The SIM will work in unlocked phones or locked AT&T phones (it pretends to be an AT&T SIM). So even a locked iPhone would work. I've had no issues with them so far and been with them for a month. Getting full HSPA+ speeds, which is anywhere from 2-5 Mbps on average. But depending on where you are you might get more (HSPA+ tops off at 21 Mbps). You can port your number over. Don't cancel with Sprint though otherwise your number will be gone. You port the number on Straight Talk's end and then your Sprint line will be cancelled. I personally ported my number to Google Voice and use that to forward to whatever number Straight Talk gave me, so I can dial in and out with my real number. And I use the Voice app for texting and voicemail. Works great because then you can text from your real number from your computer or tablet too

I've been thinking about either Straight Talk with ATT SIM, or T-Mobile's prepaid service. Not sure. I really haven't done my research on which carrier has better service in my area. If T-Mobile has better service, I'm going with their prepaid plan due to a higher data limit (I believe I can get a 5GB limit, the reason why I don't use much data on Sprint is due to the horrible data speeds. Still have to look into the details on that.)

If you're referring to T-Mobile's $30 plan with 5 GB of data and unlimited texting, it only includes 100 minutes. Plus you're pretty limited on phone selection if you plan on using international phones since they mostly use AT&T's 3G/4G bands.

I plan on the Nexus devices, and i know that the Galaxy Nexus plays well with T-Mobile's 4G network. If the next Nexus is the same way, then I'm going with that on the T-Mobile prepaid plan. If not, I'm going to go with the Straight Talk AT&T plan. But T-Mobile's plan is nicely priced, and I hardly make calls anyways. Definitely not 100 minutes worth a month.

Straight Talk has SIM cards for either AT&T bands or T-Mobile. I started with AT&T and switched to a T-Mobile card here in Miami and the T-Mobile speeds are way better than AT&T. On AT&T I was constantly getting 500-600 kbps on the downstream and now I'm never less than 1500. Just make sure your device is compatible with the appropriate carrier's network or you'll be stuck on EDGE until the 30 days are up.

I would do that, but T-Mobiles prepaid plan is cheaper. And seems like the better deal. It all just depends on coverage for me though.

I used T-Mobile's $30 plan with my Galaxy Nexus. Worked great of course. From an AT&T MVNO, you can usually get unlimited minutes and texts, and 2GB's of data for around $55.
I was on Straight Talk(AT&T sim), but I really disliked the unknown data limit. Some days, I'm on wifi all day, while other days I download a 512MB's worth of files.

I'm gonna start with T-Mobiles $30 plan and see how data is and how well service is everywhere I go. If it's not good, ill keep that plan as a backup and try an AT&T sim on Straight Talk, just in case that if I don't like the service on AT&T's network compared to TMo, I could switch back to T-Mobile's prepaid and keep the $30/month with 5GB unlimited.

No they don't. They don't throttle until you hit 5GB's. I get full 4G speeds on that plan. 8-12 down, 1-2 up.

Either you're in an area with no 3G or you have an older SIM and need to get it replaced.
It depends but I can see 100 or sometimes 150 kbps down. I wish I had 3g though.

I'm 99% certain I'm doing this. I'm more worried about coverage in the pre paid plans then about leaving Verizon. Good riddance! But still scary!
Who else is going through this and what plan are you going to try?

Depends on which prepaid you are going for. I left my unlimited data since I could save a hell lot more money with prepaid. (around 40 dollars a month)
I abandoned my Verizon Galaxy Nexus (and ate the ETF) for a Play Store Galaxy Nexus and a Straight Talk (AT&T) prepaid plan in May. I haven't looked back since. Got all the updates and cut my bill in half. Good things with prepaid is you dont have to commit. I say try out AT&T and T-Mo based prepaid plans in your area and see if you'll be happy with the service. When the Nexus 4 is released, all I need to do is put my SIM card in it...done.

You should really make sure what type of coverage/data speeds you'll be getting on T-Mobile or AT&Ts networks before you make the jump. We all want the N4, but unfortunately, it's just not going to be viable for some people.

I did this same thing about three months ago. Between me and my wife we are saving about $100 per month for smart phone service. I wont argue that Verizon is the king as far as coverage goes but they are just too proud of their services and they are punishing long term loyal customers which I won't stand for.
I would say we are receiving about 90% of other service we had with Verizon for about half the cost. It was a no brainer for me. Even with the etf, I'm already saving money!

Not going pre paid but going to t-mobile unlimited.
Straight Talk looks good but I keep hearing about strict data policies. I use like 1 gig a month usually. Its the 100 MB a day that seems limiting. Occasionally, I need that.

Its more like 2gb a month. I don't put much stock in the 100mb a day thing because I've busted that bunches of times with no reprocussions. YMMV.
If data is a concern, get a T-Mobile sim if their coverage is good in your area. I read all the time about people using 5-7gb a month without being throttled.
I actually have a T Mobile sim coming as well. That 30 dollar plan looks awesome. I just don't know if I can do 100 minutes and how their coverage is.
I keep reading that pre paid plans do not have roaming either, does anyone know what that actually means? For example, what if I leave my state and I go to another city that has good coverage with the same prepaid carrier is that considered roaming?

I am doing this. I have a plan for me and the wife. My contract is up in January so ill be buying a Nexus 4 in late december to test it out/port my number before my contract ends effective 2/2. If all is good my wife will be making the transition as well. Right now we pay $150 for our plan through Verizon for 700/unlmtd/unlmtd. We only use like 100 minutes a month so im paying for the data/messaging... all of which I cant use data inside my home, so its Wifi only, and messaging at home hardly works anyways... wifey stays home with the baby and only uses like 100mb a month on the data package.......
All said and done I cannot believe I didnt make this switch earlier. Ill be saving over $900 this year alone incl the cost of the devices. Cant beat that..
That said - Anyone interested in a Galaxy Nexus in Mint condition (I mean mint.. its a Refurb that just got sent to me last week and rebuilt 2 weeks ago, not a knick or scratch) or a RAZR Black 16gb
Anyone in SE Michigan using T-Mobile $30 plan? Checking the coverage map looks very sketchy once you get off the e-ways.
AT&T used currently, so Straight Talk is an option, but use hardly any minutes so the T-Mobile plan looks enticing, but do travel a bit to the UP and Minnesota which looks like it would be hit or miss on coverage compared to AT&T/Straight Talk.
T-Mobile's HSPA+ is faster than Verizon LTE. I wish T-Mobile had the coverage Verizon did though.

H+ is such a sketchy network compared to LTE though. Very inconsistent and can be literally polar opposites in terms of data speeds in one spot to ten feet away. From my parking spot at work to the door I go from 8down to 1down with no obstructions. Same can be said in my house. With an LTE phone I don't see those kinds of fluctuations.

No that's not considered roaming. I used my gnex on straight talk at&t & postpaid t-mobile. Here is an example of roaming: when I go upstate, there is literally no tmo coverage. In those areas (about 3 hrs north of westchester county in ny), my postpaid tmo account will roam onto at&t. At that moment, I am a tmo customer roaming onto at&t. If I were on tmo prepaid, I would not get any service at all. I would not roam onto at&t. However, on my straight talk at&t sim, I had service up there. Data speeds are slower that tmo, but there at&t has a bigger footprint.

I did just this about two weeks ago. I went with tmobile $50 unlimited and cut my bill in half. I'm really sorry I didn't do it sooner to be honest. I paid my ETF, but that's ok because I'll make it up in like 3 months of having a lower bill. It was worth it to me, because verizon's anti-consumer nonsense was really starting to bother me, and their customer service has never been great in my experience.
Coverage with tmobile has actually been pretty good in Indianapolis. However, I'm currently on an Iphone 4 and can only get edge speeds as the network farm isnt done in my area. I really like the iphone a lot, considerably better than my incredible 2, though I will probably grab a nexus 4 when it comes out, if only for variety. It's nice being able to pop a sim card out of one phone and into another without the hassle of dealing with locked up, overpriced phones.
Do it, but you might want to think about keeping a spare phone around in case you have to have your nexus 4 repaired. an older android im sure would be fine, assuming it's a model with decent build quality that can stand the test of time.

Tmo prepaid has voice/text roaming, just not data roaming.

I hate how Verizon doesn't support gsm phones, I can't upgrade my plan without loosing my unlimited data, and I can't activate any of the manufacturer version of a device because they only support CDMA.
How is everyone's satisfaction with T-Mobile? That's the only carrier I can go to and I'm in Massachusetts. If anyone can give me a good idea on what the difference in service is like that would be great.

it depends on where in MA for instance, in the western MA thinks performs well however west Worcester county(ware/w. Brookfield) it's more challenging

i agree, i live in kentucky and i easily use about 6-10gb a month and not having to worry about a data cap is lovely. i have been in a few spotty areas before but for the most part ive always been able to make calls and i havent dropped one yet. ive tried straight talk att here before i went to tmobile and while i did like att service the capped me at 1.5gb and i was only 1 week into the service.
id say look at the places you will be going most and see if tmobile has the coverage there and see if youll be ok with it first, if so make the jump, i did and i havent looked back yet.. im on the $70 unlimited no contract plan
T-No works well in all cities I go to and I have been with them for 7 years or so... check their coverage maps. They are very accurate ...

My wife and I made the switch from Veriz to T-Mob a few months ago.
There is one big overriding rule. In big population centers... T-Mob is just fine. Building penetration is not as good as Verizon though. Driving around through the lesser populated areas (outskirts and countryside), there is very little (read: none) T-Mob data coverage.
We live in Charlotte, NC and here I am completely happy with the service (data speeds are excellent). But just outside of the metro area, I am roaming. On a trip back to Iowa, the only place we had T-Mobile data was around Des Moines. Outside of Des Moines, we were roaming the whole time (even in Iowa City with population over 80,000).
You can roam with voice and text, and that generally works fine.
You can roam on data (small monthly allowances... depends on data plan) but speeds are very (read: painfully) slow.
But, for us it made sense... It saved us over a thousand dollars a year.
My two cents: If you spend your time in big cities... I'd go for it (or at least try a monthly pre-paid plan). There will be a drop off in coverage compared to verizon, but it is completely tolerable in my opinion.
If you live in (or spend a lot of time) in a small town, or you are on the highway, don't do it if you need data.
I'm really happy with T-Mobile coming from sprint. I live in south Florida and I get full bars almost everywhere I go. Data speed is just awesome I get between 8 to 14 mbps. Compare to sprint in a good day 750 kbps. And plans start at $30 which is what I have!

I live in Brooklyn, NYC and tmo has been great....well at least to me. Building penetration is lacking, but I can live with that! My speeds are usually great and the $30 data plan takes care of my needs...so for me its perfect!
I live jus north of Boston, Lynn to be exact and have great service. I work in Needham(out skirts of Boston) which I also get great service. My wife's family lives in the south shore (brockton) where the coverage is not so great. I go to the cape every year and the service there is not so great. Both those areas are mainly switching from E to 1 bar on H. Hope this info helps you. Good luck.
Also my wife and friend have att and they get good service jus about everywhere. I don't know how the data speeds are for att but they have better coverage and more expensive than T-Mobile.

I'm on the south shore and recently switched from vzw to tmo. Factually, the network is worse but there hasn't been a time when I couldn't use the phone. Data speeds are fine and I'm not missing messages or calls. My low usage(save for data) didn't justify the exuberant cost that vzw charges and the limits were annoyingly restricting.

I made the same decision as you last month and here is what I did.
I bought the n4 and the T-Mobile 30/month plan while I still had my Vzw account. I then tested the network and data in my two week return period Google gives. I then decided it was good and canceled my Vzw account.
Once I canceled Vzw and was on tmobiles 70/month unlimited plan, I started having issues that I personally couldn't live with. Tmobiles data speed are excellent (7-42mbps) however their signal is very spotty and my phone was constantly dropping to edge. I could live with this because of the cost savings, however when i noticed I was getting delayed text (sending and receiving) and phone calls not going through, I really started regretting Vzw which was always solid for me. T-Mobile tech support reminds me of the Citibank commercial "this is Peggy" and it sucks!
I then switched to att cause I love the n4, and was able to sign up contract free which I love. Their speeds are a lot slower, but their coverage is very solid. This is when I started actually becoming angry that the n4 didn't support lte since att has lte in the area and tmobile doesn't.
I work in north attleboro ma and this is just my 2 cents. I personally travel for work sometimes and really didn't want to run into no coverage zones with T-Mobile and not be able to roam. Att is not as good as Vzw, so only time will tell. Worst comes to worst I sign on with Vzw again in the future and get their latest and greatest, would have lost unlimited data regardless. Let me know if you need any more advice

Yep. Moved to T-Mobile! Loving it. Love my nexus 4 too
T-Mobile has 4g in my area but hspa+ is fast enough for me. And I always have enough service to send calls and text. Whereas on Verizon it was spotty and only worked some of the time.

Keep in mind that they will be selling the Sprint variant. This phone will not work on other networks as good as it does on any Sprint network provider. LTE will only work on Sprint. HSPA should work on other networks since they share the same frequencies, but whenever you don't have that, you need CDMA as fallback. End result is a really crappy coverage unless you live in a metro area with good Sprint HSPA.

I think you will have to check with RW. They have to install their special hybrid software to make this Wi-Fi calling to work. If you put a new ROM, the hybrid software may not be compatible. Check with them.

I am skeptical. $299 is < 1/2 the price everyone else is chargin, plus they make next to no money on the service... so where are they making money?

I'm curious if there's any way to flash this to use on ATT or T-Mobile. I'm sure it's locked either in the rom or elsewhere keeping it only on the sprint network though. Could anyone shine some light upon these chances?

Republic Wireless rides on the Sprint network, so you're likely limited to Sprint. You could probably maybe put an ATT or T-Mo sim and get voice, and maybe HSPA+ on ATT like the Verizon X can, but I doubt T-Mo would be above EDGE speeds.

So for people using Sprint would we be able to root, flash a sprint rom, and then be able to activate it on Sprint? I would love to get this phone without having to pay $600 or renewing my Sprint contract.

The RW site says it will be contact free. Buying at RW and activating on Sprint may be possible. It is unknown for now. But that option would be great for people on Sprint.

I think that's illegal on CDMA devices anyways. Not sure. I also wonder if these Republic Wireless phones will have any resale value? $25-$40 per month is enticing though.

That would be a good point to argue. But one scenario can be that somebody is stuck in Sprint contract and have a sub par phone. In that case paying $299 for moto x is a steal. In any case, if the speeds on the $40 RW plan is similar to Sprint speeds, then RW plan is the clear choice.
