Need help with rooting GS4 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

So I'll go ahead and say that I'm a noob when it comes rooting. With that being said I've already rooted my gs4 using the micro sd method(I cant remember the exact name of the root method but it was through xda). I had read on the beginners guid e to rooting that I should read read and read some more before doing anything which is what I did. So I rooted it and everything went smoothly and I then I found out about the app Tasker. I downloaded it and I had to dowbload the Secure Settings plugin to use certain options. Now when ever I have Secure Settings downloaded on my phone I cant hold down the home key to bring up the list of current running applications without my UI crashing. It brings up the message 'Unfortunately, the system UI has stopped working.' After initially downloading Tasker, my phone worked fine but now it's slower and buggier then ever. I really want to know everything there is to know and be able to do with the gs4 so if anyone could help me out I'd really appreciate it.

[Q] I'm so very confused.

Alright, So I recently just moved from an Evo to the epic. And I'm glad I did. The evo was great, But I missed having a keyboard and the epic hasn't dissapointed.
I have a couple questions though,
Rooting on the evo was super easy, I'm still confused on how to use the one click root for epic. People are saying it doesn't work? And I read on some website if you just want to change roms and change kernals just to flash a custom recovery onto it and don't root, because rooting will only let you get root-only apps.
Please? Explain on how to root with the one click root method because I'm Completely lost on how to do this for the epic 0_o
The one click root does work. I followed the instructions and my phone is rooted. I'm new to android and to rooting but not new to modding phones/computers/software. After rooting you can still download none root apps in addition to root apps. From what I've seen most of the rooting issues come from people not following the instructions or not truely understanding them. I haven't flashed to a new rom yet. I'm waiting on froyo. So I can't say for sure but its my understanding that you have to have root premissions to flash a custom rom.

As far as how to root with the one click root I installed the samsung usb drivers for my operating system (win 7 64bit) Note: after reading several posts the driver installation takes a little bit. Click on the installing drivers message to bring up the install window. I let the installtion run for almost 15 minuted and it still gave me an error but after turning on usb debbuging on phone connecting with usb, mounting sd card, and running the one click root my phone restarted and I was rooted. If you search other posts you'll find more detailed instructions.

Correction. You don't have to root to flash a rom I don't know what I was thinking when I typed that. All you need is clockwork recovery.

The only problem you'll encounter, if any at all, with rooting is with driver installation. If u follow the guides tho and don't try to experiment, u shud be good to go. These roots are one click as well as it involves running a simple bat file. Some phones are more finnicky than others, but they shud give u no trouble if u know what ur doing. Good luck.
And yes, the keyboard on this rules

[Q] HELP! rooted. apps gone. 0bytes

OK.. so here is my story. i got my phone about a month ago. rooted it. worked great. last week my phone froze so i had to pull the battery, ive dont that before, but this time when i tuned it on it took me thru setup wizard. my apps were gone and i have 0 bytes. every time i turn it off and turn it back on i have to go through the set up wizard. i looked online for ways to go back to stock, but they require i download an app. but i cant because i have 0 bytes. please i just want this thing unrooted and back to normal. PLEASE HELP
Theres a thread in the development section that addresses this issue. Search 0.00. Fyi imo voodoo is not worth the drama, stock file system roms ftw, kk?

i cant get it to work i downloaded odin but am having problems with it
Odin will not fix your problem, rooting is not your problem. Look in the development section on this forum and run the voodoo uninstaller(automatic) boot into stock android recovery 2e, and wipe data/cache after you run voodoo uninstaller.

but what is voodoo??
i never installed voodoo
and in odin... icant locate the pda file or i just dont have it. when i find a link to install it brings up a blank page
This may be a dumb suggestion, but is it possible your SD card is loose in its socket?

[Q] Newly installed fonts don't work

I just got the Samsung S4 and have been trying to install new fonts without any success. they download and install but when I go to choose one no matter which one I choose it says that font is not available. They do show up in the settings but I just can'[t make one the font I want to use. Anyone know what I am doing wrong?
Questions go in Q&A
Thread moved
same issue
Yup, i installed fonts from the store and i get the same error. Anyone help?
Yeah, it's really strange too because all these fonts I downloaded show up and can be used in Handcent. I would love to remove them now and I have tried to uninstall them and they won't go away. My only alternative is to reset my phone and I can't do that at the moment because I rooted my phone last night and now I have to wait for a recovery to be devoloped to remove the root before I reset my phone. The phone is working, the root process went fine I just don't know enough about rooting to even had done that so I feel more comfortable going back to a non-rooted phone. I just wish they would hurry up ........
I remember reading something a few days ago on xda about this. Someone posted a reply saying that it might be the fonts havent been optimized for full HD.
Only the paid fonts from the play store work so far.

failed to root, now bricked, lost in the sauce

Rooting my Galaxy S4 has been one of the biggest pains in my rear ever and now I'm bricked and need a bit of help.
Normally, when I want to root a phone, I come here, to XDA, and follow a nice well written up-to-date thread on how to do it and it works. For the S4 however, I can't find any such threads that are not either old, out-of-date, or they use so many abbreviations for things I have no clue what they are talking about.
I started out with a totally stock Samsung Galaxy S4, was a VPUAMDL.
I used ODIN to push TWRP tarball. I then used TWRP to install the CWM SuperSU zip file.
I noticed when it started up that I had no root, I had the SuperSU program however, it nor another program I got on the marketplace, could confirm root.
Bit of looking I found this: galaxys4root (DOT) com/galaxy-s4-root/sprint-vpuamdl-firmware-update-root-fix/
(sorry, can't post full links yet)
Which basically informed me that VPUAMDL needs a new kernel to remove the SetUID restrictions.
I downloaded that file, and put it on my SD card. Booted into TWRP and installed. now my phone is bricked. gets to the "Samsung Galaxy S4" startup splash screen on black background
I am looking for a kernel that will work, either the stock kernel or not.
I am also looking for a good tut on rooting the S4, as all the tuts I have used have been utter wasted time.
I have ODIN, and can boot TWRP, ODIN mode, etc on my phone.
have no clue where to go from here and Im afraid to start trying to download random files and get everything mixed and confused.
Thanks for any help at all.

I followed that page, pushed it, installed fine, 100% no errors.
still bricked at GS4 startup splashscreen.
It did finish successfully and I saw the screen with the red android.
It removed TWRP and replaced it with the stock recovery as it should have.
I am actually surprised myself that it is still bricked at the GS4 splash.
Odin stock everything. See if it boots. Then try to root after that.

I am failing to find stock everything to push.
I think I stated that, not sure... hmm
none the less. I do not have a stock kernel or recovery on hand. I can not find one either as there seem to be a plethora of kernels and threads and pages all for different files and downloads. Sifting through trying to find something is becoming harsh. Thus this thread.
You are not bricked if your phone can turn on and go to download mode or recovery.

Well then its whatever you want to call it when it wont boot the operating system and is totally un-usable as a phone or mobile device.
I would go HERE
That is the thread for stock MDL stuff.
Download and flash the kernel and full wipe rom for MDL.
Then upgrade to MF9.
+2 ^^^^ to what he said :edit:
Nice tut on rooting the s4 thanks to mudavo here http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...to Full Stock [MF9] w/ Root & Custom Recovery
There is also a video tutorial stickied in android devolpment

"The device has noticed an app trying to perform prohibited actions.."?

Hi,
i get a notification about "the device has noticed an app trying to perform prohibited actions. For security reasons we advise a reboot.reboot now or reboot later are my choices"
what is that about?
It doesnt say which app and what it did. I basically havent really installed anything so i dont know whats up.
I got a 0x0 working root with SU and tested. UrdlV 0.2'ed.

Haven't seen that one before, seen one similar though. Is it a KNOX notification? - check what apps you have that are demanding access to system files (root apps) - and is your root working 100%? - It is possible you have deny apps that ask for Superuser in SU, find em, tweak em and should be ok.
If none of the above, may need to unroot, then re-root as it could be a bad root.
Are you talking about something like this, in the attachment?
I'm getting these notifications every once in a while, I'm not rooted, BUT (!!!) I have some apps installed that require root access (moved all my junk basically from my rooted S2 and installed all the apps deciding to root it later). So I think is that one of the apps is trying to access the root and phone is shutting it down. If you're getting this on your rooted phone, I'd double check if it's really rooted.
The latest MJ7 firmware update solve this prevention message.

It was my understanding that some apps were trying to gain root access on my unrooted phone, guess I was wrong.
I however didn't get anymore of these notifications (I don't think so) since the OTA update to MJ7, as the member alanchai mentioned prior to your reply. :good:
Hi All,
Not sure if this is a fix for all but it has worked for me as I was getting the same preventative message in notifications.
I had some apps which were installed by allowing 'unknown sources (other than play store)', once installed I unticked the 'unknown sources (under security)' this caused me to get these preventative notifications so ticked the box again and have not had the message reappear.
Am using the Note 3 SM-N9005.
