4.4 Update unlocks LTE band 4 1700 mhz & Stock Tethering - Droid Ultra General

I noticed that after the update to KitKat I'm picking LTE signal when that didn't happen before, I'm so happy .
As you know I'm in Mexico so I'm don't know which US carrier uses the same LTE band but I think it's at&t as we use the same bands.
tl;dr KitKat update unlocked LTE for At&t and T-Mobile
Edit:
It also unlocks stock tethering, also wasnt active before:

The previous update had band 4 support as well. Was using it on T-Mobile

FYI I think att only uses band 4 in a few places. So most AT&T users will likely still not get lte.

This. And again this has been active since the previous 4.2.2 build. Stock tethering has been unlocked for anyone with limited data plans since the beginning. If you have unlimited data it's still going to try to make you subscribe for $30. If you're on another carrier, it doesn't do this check. Hasn't for ages.

FYI - if you previously had Verizon unlimited and took a 2 year extension, you may or may not have tethering. I was offered a 6gb limit for the price of 2gb, but my plan does not have tethering enabled. However their new standard tiered plans now include tethering.

You can call them and they'll put it on for you at no charge. It's part of the block C agreement. All unlim plans will pay for it (unless you've got some promo plan still active or some shiz of course). Anyone on tiered data gets it for free.

/shrug. Just telling you that Band 4 was unlocked on the "95" radio as well for 4.2.2 . If you had a bastardized build where you had a partial flash and you were running 4.2.2 with the "90" radio then yes, you wouldn't have had band 4 active. This situation did affect a few people.

if someone could confirm for t-mobile that would be awesome....im looking for any reason to leave big red. i do love the maxx though!!

I've stated in previous threads and this one that LTE has been functional for Tmobile and HSPA+ (in refarmed areas) for about 3-4 months now. Whenever that last update happened before 4.4.

Are you able to make phone call and send text messages on LTE. Cause I'm on T-Mobile also with LTE and android 4.4. It won't let me make call and send text message. Before with 4.2 it just automatic switch from LTE to 3g to make it instead of saying " roaming indicator off" then disconnected. So I have to manually switch it before calling anybody. Pretty annoying.
If you also have 4.4 can you give me link to get the firmware. Thanks

This was talked about months ago Z. People thought it meant cell phones too but it does not.
I heard about it being laptop cards and mobile hotspots, not tablets as well. My Evo view 4g is useless now, wonder if a change like this lets me out of my tablet contract... I have the cheapest tablet data plan but I use a bit of 4g. No torrenting or anything like that but I feel kind of lied to. Stupid iPhone ruining everything for the rest of us.

Tis okay. It makes you wonder, are smartphone unlimited data plans next to go? I hope sprint sticks to their marketing campaign. Its the only thing I can brag about to my at&t/Verizon friends.

If they kill unlimited cell data, not really sure where to go next. At&t is evil and doesn't care about it's customers and Verizon is almost as bad. T-Mobile will either flounder or become a fully owned subsidiary of at&t. US phone market really sucks. At&t and Verizon are making more money than ever and put all but the dregs straight into the pocketbooks of their investors.

Define 'mobile broadband'. Is that like tethering from your phone if you do it officially? I'm under the impression 'hotspot' would be more like if you have one of those wifi cards. Will the actual data through my phone to ONLY my phone still remain unlimited?
If not, Sprint is going to be in a world of hurt. This is the only thing keeping people there right now. Their service is okay, their 3G speed is pathetic. If they implement this before they roll out Network Vision, there is absolutely ZERO reason to stick with them. After Network Vision is a maybe, as then maybe the speeds will be something sort of useful.
If you pay for the Hotspot on your phone it has a 5GB limit and then throttles you down I believe. Mobile Broadband is a card you plug into a laptop to give you internet in any 3G or 4G area.

When you run the paid Hotspot it signs you into the network to verify you pay for it. At that time it must keep track of your usage until you sign out. We would have to see the terms and conditions of the $30 hotspot addition to be sure. But the also have hardware hotspots which I am sure the new caps are geared towards.

So since I pay for Hotspot on my ET4G, can I use that some then just use WifiTether 3.1 beta 6 (which works great actually) as a tradeoff? Also, if not downloading tons of ROMs, is this cap going to be easy to hit?

so I just got this message at work
" Free TMO Msg: After March 24th, 2012 the Smartphone Mobile Hotspot feature will be required to use your phone for WiFi sharing/tethering." Im on the 70$ prepaid plan with 5 gigs and I've been using the built in tether. my next pay period is on 14th NOT the 24 so idk if they know I've been using it. Anyone else got this message and were u billed? I'm running Tuesday new beginnings ROM
Also can they disable the built in tether if I keep using it after that date?

These people are the worst kind of scum, you should find another network if they are seriously going to start playing games like that.

My WAG is that they're texting anyone who's ever used the built-in tethering app.
I tether 4days/week (although I use relatively little data) using the CyanogenMod tethering functionality and haven't received the message.
The most I've used is 600MB/mo, so it's not like I'm hosing them. But if they restrict my tethering I will drop that line. I lived without mobile data for a long time and can do so again easily. I only hand out my Google voice number so dropping this line won't affect my contacts.

This thread is one big source of wrong information
To answer the origanal question... I am using AOKP and the built in tethering works great on the new unlimited plan..
As for those who still refuse to accept hspa+ as 4g do some research.. it was decided well over a year ago now that hspa+ is accepted as 4g since it is so much faster.. and fyi.. lte was granted this approval at the same time since it also doesn't technically meet the minimum 4g requirements either...
Bottom line I get well over 20 mbs do speeds..

Using aokp? I barely get 8 mbps

I don't get the purpose of this post. His signature says he is on AOKP and he is ON AOKP. Where's the misinformation?

yes we still get pretty fast speed, no complaints there. Still not as fast as lte though. I think it's because h+ is the same technology as regular 3g, but with a boost. Lte is a different technology where you can separate into 2g, 3g, or lte. However our 4g using the same thing as 3g. Yes they can call it 4g 5g 6g, or whatever they want but they're still using the 3g technology. It doesn't mask the fact that it's slower than 4g lte

You are correct!
You can read about it on Wikipedia (a very dry read) here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G
Or, there is a nice "juicy" read in this article:
http://gigaom.com/2012/04/08/think-4g-is-10-times-faster-think-again/
Anybody sees speeds of 1GB/S?????

What they are calling 4G LTE is not true 4G either. LTE Advanced is true 4G and that is what tmobile is working on deploying.
That wiki page is full of all kinds of stupid and leaves out a lot.

I honestly don't know what's true 4g anymore lol. I always based it off technology. Lte being a different technology in data was what i measured to be "4g" and the fact that it hit 60mbps down really did it for me. Is the new 4g lte advanced a different technology from lte? Or is it another marketing gimmick lol.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Is there anyway to add this to an Even More Plus Plan?
Lte is using a different tech. It will be called long term evolution. Why, I don't, but it seems too expensive for Tmobile probably for maintaining it and the signature style of evolution. Foundations for technology must be solid, and have a lot of hardware add-ons in terms of future sales in my best guess.

And though I've been in this argument many times because people feel the need to try and call other out...

Well yes I currently have a T-Mobile Variant of the Moto X. It does not have WiFi calling. It has no bloat what so ever. No T-Mobile Applications. And I'll include some screenshots of about system.

The screenshot like this does not convince me to believe that it's a t-mobile variant. Please attach an image showing the phone connected to the T-Mobile network with the word "T-Mobile". Thanks!
Curious, if you are able to make calls with it, how is the call quality? "Robotic" or digital sounding? Or is it more smooth and landline-ish?
And if you can connect, how is the mobile network reception compared to other devices you've had in your area? Does it exhibit signs of those good radios that Motorola is famous for? Or has Google interfered with that?

He flashed the T-Mobile software to his phone, but has an AT&T SIM card. You can either take his and my word for it, or choose to not believe us. Up to you.
The phone overall has great cellular radios. People say I sound clear on all calls. I am connected to ATT network as Matt has said but I did flash the T-Mobile software to this device.

so the device is an at&t variant with t-mobile software? Is the at&t variant bootloader unlockable?

It is a prototype Verizon Model with unlocked radios.

Actually T-Mobile did touch it alittle the data indicate at the top is T-Mobile`s 4G icon they put in there software so you can clearly tell it is the T-Mobile software.

So a Verizon Model with an AT&T Sim running Tmobile software. What, no love for Sprint in there? haha.
