Some perspective - G Pad 8.3 General

I bought the LG tab from Newegg when it was $249 because I watch Newegg for this kind of thing. If HP had gotten off the mark with their Slate 8 Pro I might have gone for that because 4:3 is good for reading. Yes it came unsealed. Yes it showed some marks of having been handled. I have no doubt whatsoever those smudges were due to handling during quality control, packing, whatever. If it cost another $1 to have the thing wiped down and covered with plastic front and back, they should have. No one's bought this thing yet. So there aren't many returns to ship. So I suggest to chill about returning the thing because it wasn't shrink wrapped. I bought an $800 LG HDTV and it wasn't shrink wrapped either. Good tv.
My g pad is just fine. Not too yellow, no blue line, piss poor sound from the speakers, good wifi and BT, complete Play Store compatibility. Nothing's perfect but it's fulfilled my expectations as to size, resolution, color, sharpness, wifi robustness, abd drivers, etc. etc.
Rooted from day one, which was within all of three weeks of availability at only two major retailers. Best Buy doesn't seem to know they have it. Newegg gave it away in spurts (unsealed!).
I've had this less than a week and already there's a stable fork of CM11. My precious Nooks (I have two running CM10.1) will be thankful for what they've got.
If I ever get fool proof restore after a flash, I'll be content for the nonce. I've tried Titanium and Helium multiple times and each of them hung so often during restore after a crash it almost wasn't worth the trouble to back up. (Google should take care of this, since privacy is not their problem).
Be that as it may. The LG g pad 8.3 GPE is *almost* worth $350. It would be an excellent Xmas present for someone who would appreciate it. Raise your hand if you're the only person you know like that.
But living in the world of Loki doki and flashify and *.lok vs *.img has been lots of fun so far. In my wildest CWM dreams I didn't think this weird Gangnam style tablet would introduce me to TWRP.
It's a good tablet about to become really good with Google's endorsement. Lucky us! Hey pretty lady!
$64,000 question. After six months of GPE availability, do the "original" g pads come back on the market at $250. I suspect LG overproduced which is why they called in their friends at Google to pull up the slack. Google can't discount their older products willy nilly so if there are too many of them will they put back the LG sw and sell it at a deep discount?
Begging the question, how does "vanilla" kitkat get on to the GPE devices? Does LG ship the units to Google who installs the rom and warehouses them or does Google send approved ROMs to the OEM who flashes them and sends the back.
Haven't seen any discussion of this in the uninformed speculation about the marketing strategies of two giant global companies.

Lg is in charge of the software on the GPE G Pad....just like HTC and Samsung are in charge of updating their GPE handsets.

What's wroing with LG?

In the Atlanta area, where I live, I can't find a single B&M store that has the G Pad on display. At one of the local Best Buy stores, they had a couple of units in stock, but the batteries weren't charged and they were not on display.
There are only 2 authorized dealers in the US, Best Buy and Newegg. Neither of the two is actively pushing the G Pad.
I have to guess that LG has spent a lot of money developing this product . People are not going to buy a product like this if they can't see it in stores and try it out. Black Friday is little more than a week away and we are moving into the major season for electronics sales. I can't understand why LG is making such a feeble marketing attempt. They seem to be setting themselves up for a massive failure.
I think this product is very good and could be a big winner with good marketing, but the window is closing for LG. They need to get this into B&M stores, get more online vendors, and lower the price.
The only possible explanation that I can think of for the current state of affairs is that LG really is about to produce a Nexus 8 version of the G Pad. In that scenario, they may have made a deal with Google to divert production in that direction. They may also have decided that they can sell more of the devices under the Nexus name and benefit by letting Google pay for the advertising and marketing. This would be a smart move.
Time will tell!
I'm having the same problem here in Charlotte. Out of about 20 stores in the area, only two show as having them in stock and that's only the white model. I visited two different Best Buys last weekend and neither of the associates there had even heard of it.
Just left a BB store. The store employee had never heard of the G Pad. He looked it up and was surprised to find that they had 2 in stock. Of course they were not on display. If the BB employees have never heard of it, how many people in the general public are going to find out about it? This is a massive marketing failure.
this is part of the reason i returned mine. If a company doesn't care enough to market a device, then they sure as hell aren't going to support it. It's sounding more and more like that blue line problem on the screen is a hardware design issue on every unit and with so little attention being given to this device by LG, I'd be shocked if they did anything to resolve the issue in future units (if they even plan on producing more beyond their initial batches).

I am in the Atlanta area too and could not find it in the stores. I went to Kennesaw and Alpharetta stores with no luck, let me know if you find one! I'm dying to get my hands on one
I agree they have 5 samsung devices on display (some are repeats of the same device) but no LG? The LG looks SO much better IMO
There is no way we can get it in Canada either. No stores have it in stock online or in store, or have made any mention of ever getting it. Pretty disappointing because I was strongly considering getting it, but wanted to play with it for a few minutes to be sure of my decision.

The blue line issue doesn't really sound like a big deal to me. My concern is how few of these devices are being sold, at least in the US. I would guess that very few people in the US own one of these, possibly just a few hundred. Based on the inept marketing, the G Pad is shaping up to be an orphaned product.
Right now, I'm deeply disappointed and a little pissed off. I've been watching the developments around the G Pad for a month with plans to buy one.
My strategy now is to wait until either:
A: the G Pad morphs into the Nexus 8 (that would be great)
or
B: They unload however many they have manufactured and start dumping them after the holidays at closeout prices (say $150)
I don't see where else this is going to go.
"LG Restructures Smartphone Division"
I just saw this article about LG "restructuring" it's mobile division to focus more on TVs. This report says that they have dumped 10% of their workforce in the smartphone division. Sounds like LG has decided that phones and tablets are not where they are going to be putting their efforts.
http://www.unwiredview.com/2013/11/20/g-pad-8-3-to-be-released-in-new-markets-before-the-end-of-2013-lg-plans-to-boost-tv-efforts-by-restructuring-its-smartphone-division/
This might be a clue to why they are doing so little with the G Pad.
Finally find a good Android tablet and the OEM jumps ship.
Great.
Maybe I should just buy a freakin' iPad.

That's how I feel. But I'm not stooping to an iPad. Maybe I'll get an N7 and wait for somebody else to make a good 8 inch tablet.

I can't even return mine at this point, and selling it probably wouldn't net much interest. I really like the 8" form factor, though, so the N7 is out of the question.
Looks like no money will be spent for marketing. Although they are making tons off the nexus 4 and 5 and Do not have to spend a dime on marketing since Google will. Seems like the gpad is just extra pocket change for them. And I still want a G2 since they won't be putting much effort into future devices lol.

But I've seem plenty of LG G2 commercials on TV. A whole heck of a lot more for it than the HTC One. Btw, you may already know this but Best Buy has a deal where you can save $200 if you buy both the G2 and G-Pad (if you haven't bought the G-Pad yet).

honestly even if LG focus will shift I am still interested in this tablet. That article sounded like they are just focusing on TV to get more money for their smartphones so maybe it will be a good thing.

I don't think they're making any "extra pocket money" on the Gpad. I would think that they will not even be able to recoup their investment if they don't make some effort to sell more. I would bet that the number sold in the US, so far, must be in the hundreds. No way that can be profitable.

They put G Pro internals, bigger battery and better screen and possibly make it in the same assembly line as the G pro and g2 and sell it for $329 to $349 in just the US. There is also Korea. Others sell their no name brand tablets for $100 and still profit.
I'm sure LG is making money off each sale as opposed to needing to sell a certain amount to recoup the cost to make it.
But hey, I don't have any evidence of this lol
I'm surprised so many people are having trouble finding it. Here in St. Louis the BB closest to me had at least 6. When I went to check it out first they had it on display, but when I went back to buy it a few days later it wasn't on display anymore. Also I can sort of understand only selling in BB if LG wasn't expecting to sell a ton as it would have the best chance for exposure, however that only works if it's on display.

The lack of G Pad in Best Buy is all Best Buy. LG wants it on display side by side the G2 but Best Buy has been lacking in displaying the Tablet.
LG isn't leaving the Smartphone/Tablet market, rather they are going to focus on a streamlined product line, no flooding the market with 10 variations of high and low end devices like Samsung. You might instead see LG come out with 3-4 handsets for the entire year.

$279 at Best Buy today only

Best Buy is running a sale on the G Pad for $280 today only. I'm about to nab one for in-store pick-up.

I bought one there a few days ago and had BB adjust the price today.
This tablet is a sleeper currently. Folks seem to just pass by anything that isn't a Nexus, Samsung, or Ipad. I bet the price will soon hit what the new Nexus 7 is going for, I will keep my eyes peeled and get a further adjustment if that happens. Lots of price wars happening with Microsoft and android tablets lately.
Good thought on watching the price and having them adjust for any drop. I grabbed two, one white from my local Best Buy and one black from one across town. I'd been thinking I wanted black since my current/previous tablets have been black (or dark gray in a few cases), but the white one does look pretty slick, so I might try that for once. I'll obviously cancel/return the one I don't keep.

I'm liking it so far. No hot buttons currently and I think it is a sleeper currently for price and quality right now. The Nexus 7 is very good, I have one but 16:10 aspect ratio on a 7 inch is tough for me to tell the truth.
No lag with games, videos don't buffer, web browsing is fine, reading on it is very good. SOLD!!!
Just sold an iPhone 5 I had for $220 so Im waiting for any Christmas sales. Will have about $330 by Christmas so Im just watching:laugh: out for any good deals.
I bought one at BB today myself... Having some drinks waiting on the first 100% Charge.... Returned my Nexus 7 2013 for this puppy.. I think this is the *Perfect* size for a Tablet.

Yeah, I think I'm inclined to agree after playing with it for a few hours. This is a really great device! I rooted it and restored apps and data from my Nook HD+ using TiBu. Very responsive in everything I've thrown at it so far. Great deal at $280 (wish I'd gotten the NewEgg deal earlier this week though!).

LOL I thought I was reading my own post since I too rooted & restored from an HD+ today. Got the Newegg deal BTW.
I just picked one up at the local Best Buy, they do not have any on display. I purchased online for in store pick-up. My wife and I both have LG phones and love them. I'm not done setting the G pad up yet, but loving it so far.

I seen that deal also Wells.. but I rather buy at a Brick & Mortar.. I had a situation where a Asus HD 7 freaked out and looped doing an update to the latest firmware 5 minutes out of the box.. the turn around for refund or replacement would have been over a week if I purchased it through Newegg.. As it was, I just walked it into Walmart and got my Cash back.. So, I for one don't mind at all paying the $30.00 difference to avoid the headache of returning an item such as this should I have an issue.. My unit has fully charged while typing this and I've just powered it up for the 1st time.. and it's FABULOUS..
Thanks for this post! Mine is slated to arrive Tuesday from Best Buy Online. I will contact them today to see if I can get a $20 credit since I paid 299. I posted this in the accessories page ...

you guys might appreciate it as well. So that you don't waste as much time as I have researching official accessories as seen in the hands-on reviews from certain websites, I can assure you that the official accessories like the dock and the quick cover are not yet available in the US even though they appear on the LG US website. I just spent a hell of a lot of time on the phone with LG trying to show them that their own website lists the items complete with full instructions on how to use them. I finally got someone to admit that the products are not available in the United States at this time. I picked up an Asus cover on Amazon that will work with the LG.

Which Asus cover works with the G Pad?
I too ordered one. I missed the Newegg one thought I would just wait one more day lol, one day to late. The taxes from Bestbuy gets it up to $300. Still good price. Going to test it against the HP Slate8 pro. At 1st I really liked the HP (Tegra 4) yet the speakers at the bottom portrait mode I cant tell ever if its stereo. Then way to many times it gets sluggish. The only thing I can relate to this is on my PC many years ago when running to many apps it would be swapping memory you get that lag.
I did try the EVGA note. Was nice yet the battery life is very short. Then on the HP running things wow the higher rez really made some apps and games look so much better. Battery life on the HP is really good. I really loved the Kendal HDX speakers. So all I need is a tab with kendal speakers, a stylus, 32gb + 2ram and I will be happy.

unfortunately, none of them. It's the Asus 8 inch Note tablet cover that is being listed as completely compatible with the LG Gpad 8.3. However, I ordered a white one twice now from two different companies on Amazon and both times my order was cancelled because they are out of stock. You can probably get it in a different color or maybe black, but I'm holding out for white. Just a search on Amazon and it will come right up.
"VSTN LG G Pad 8.3 Multi-Stand PU Leather Cover Case with Hand Strap&Card Holder (For LG G Pad 8.3, White)"
I picked one up on on the 7th after missing out on the newegg $249 deal. I also used my amex $25 off $250 so that helped cover the tax. If it drops in price before the extended holiday return period (almost a certainty) I'll get that as well. Now I just need to decide if I'm going to return the N7 32G I picked up last week for $209. The overall dimensions for the 2 are pretty close but the screen size is the reason I got the G Pad.

Well some of us jumped on the G Pad but to tell the truth there is just no visibility with this device. All BB stores in my area don't have one on display and unless one is savvy, you wouldn't even know they carried it.
And I'm unsure what other big box retailers carry it either where you can just walk in and buy it. This may or may not hurt with a price drop in the near future. If the manufacturer monitors sales, I don't no how they can expect much more without the product being more visible to the public. A shame really cause it blows away much of what is out there currently available!

I wouldn't have bought one with being able to try it out beforehand. The closest BB didn't carry it but one not too far away supposedly had them in inventory. When I went I naturally went to where the tablets were and it was nowhere to be found. I asked a sales associate and they said they don't carry it I mentioned that BB online shows they have them so he dug a bit deeper and found out they have them over in the mobile department. It makes no sense to me since it's currently WiFi only but there it was with the LG phones.

A warning to those thinking about exchanging a Cyber Monday Moto X

EDIT: Despite what the CSR below told me, they do offer exchanges. You can do an 'advance return' where they will put a hold on your CC for the full amount of a new device, give you a code to buy a new one, and release the hold when they receive your old device so you're still only charged the original discounted amount. However, you can not exchange a discounted Moto X for one of the new Bamboo ones (read here)
************
I've been looking into the details on exchanging a custom Moto X and was just told via chat that they do not do true "exchanges". Rather, they just have you return the phone, refund you, and have you buy another. So you wouldn't be able to get an exchanged one with the $150 discount. Here's the transcript.
Desiree: Hi, my name is Desiree. How may I help you?
Me: I have a question about the 14 day exchange policy
Me: I am planning on buying a device tonight with the $150 off promotion
Desiree: I will be more than happy to assist you on this.
Desiree: Go ahead, please.
Me: If I don't like my design and want to exchange it within the 14 day window, will I still be able to get a redesigned device at the discounted price?
Desiree: My apologies, the $150 off promotion will not be applicable to the exchange device,
Me: Ok so then you don't really offer exchanges, just returns?
Desiree: My apologies about this but that is how it works.
Me: ok thank you

I've been looking into the details on this, and apparently they don't really do a true "exchange". Rather, they just have you return the phone, refund you, and have you buy another. The one re-design mentioned above applies to when you buy it on contract and get a Moto Maker PIN (in that case, you send the phone back and they give you a new PIN rather than a refund). I just confirmed all this in chat:
So if you don't like your design or were hoping to switch it out for a wood one (if they come out in the next 2 weeks), you're going to have to pay full price for the new one.

Good to know! Just ordered a phone for my brother, hopefully he will not be disappointed with his choices, hahaha.
We here's the real fact if you happen to get a defective one. They do an advance return if you choose it. They are authorize your card just like the nexus exchange after they send you a link to a new build with the same specs (you customize it but it locks in whatever memory config and model you chose before). They then go ahead and build your replacement and ship it. After they receive the return (that they pay to ship back!) They will remove the charge for the new device... Or the authorization. So really, with defects you don't lose out on your deal. I don't know about voluntary returns... But with defects, I'm in the process of it right now and paid the initial order with a coupon.

Updated the OP, it's possible that that CSR was wrong as their twitter states you can exchange it (likely via the method mentioned above). Eitherway, it's annoying their own support can't give consistent answers.
Yeah, I suspect that you can get it exchanged and that their support is either confused or misinformed.
They state that you can exchange your device. Whatever internal process they use for that is not your problem: an exchange is an exchange, and it should result in zero dollars being paid.

I strongly suspect that since I've unlocked my Tmo bootloader, I'm stuck with no chance of exchange.

Well, maybe, but that has nothing to do with the Cyber Monday deal - which was the original question.

They would not do an exchange for me when I had camera issues. I was told their process is to return the unit either for repair or refund, no exchanges.

What, exactly, does that have to do with exchanging a Motomaker device for a different color?
Motorola explicitly states that they will exchange a device within 14 days for a different color configuration. The point is that it doesn't matter how Motorola looks at an "exchange" - any discounts to the original sale would still apply.
My advice: don't waste your time with the chat reps.
As Jayrod said, they do exchanges. What they do is they send you a new "special pin" through email that lets you re-order on MotoMaker (you input the pin at the end). This can be accomplished without a charge on your CC (they give you two options: advance replacement, or regular replacement).
You can replace OR refund even if it is not defective and if you just don't like the colors and even if you open the factory sealed box.
Well the Moto FAQ on the Bamboo back has answered the question a lot of people have been wondering:
I purchased a Moto X from Moto Maker using the a holiday promotion code. Can I switch it to a Moto X with Bamboo?
If your phone falls within our return period, you can return it for a refund of the original purchase price and re-purchase a Moto X with Bamboo. However, the Holiday discount you received will not apply.

Yikes... so then, it's $250 more for Bamboo. Your head would have to be made of wood to exchange for the wood phone.

Pretty much. Maybe if the phone had a Snapdragon 800 and a much better camera I would do it because the phone would be a little more future proof. As it is though, I doubt I'll keep this phone much more than 6 months and definitely not more than a year. As good as the phone is, there is plenty of room for improvement and if I was paying $250 for wood, I wouldn't want the phone to become outdated as quickly as this might.

I agree.
If this phone had the latest and greatest then I can see shelling out that much for a Bamboo back. The Snapdragon 800 should last you a long time into the future. It's too expensive for me is all I'll say. Someone out there will definitely want a phone with a natural back even at the price it commands. I'm sure the process to make these type of backs was very complicated, but it would had made sense to have these out from release date. Hopefully the next version of this phone isn't too far off. The concept of it is really awesome and even with now mid range specs the experience is truly amazing.
I don't see the Moto's X specs being a hindrance to moving forward to next year. Slow down? Maybe a bit, but not too much as to say you will want to scrap it right away. After all the X8 chip is something done right.

I think everyone is needlessly scared about the specs on this device. I just purchased a Moto X and have been using it for 2 weeks now, and have seen no reason to believe it will be out of date before the 1 year mark of my ownership. You really cannot compare the Moto X to other smartphones out right now. It's doing at least two things that no other phone is doing (touchless control, always listening and the active notifications), and it was built with those features in mind. That "crappy" 720p AMOLED screen is such that it is because if you went with a 1080p AMOLED or LCD screen, it would blow through your battery. The "slow" dual core processor runs the OS just fine, and the other CPUs handle the special features instead of the main CPU. Have naysayers actually used the Moto X and compared it to the Nexus 5 (arguable the best comparison of KitKat vs KitKat)? I have. I see absolutely NO performance difference between the Moto X and the Nexus 5, based on things I actually do day-to-day (none of these silly numbers only benchmarks that don't really give you a real representation of how the phone will perform for you).
From a financial perspective, maybe at this point, sure - be skeptical about if it's worth the money to get one, or just wait until September to purchase the next iteration. Then again, if you wait even longer, something even better will be out.
Not being made of money, I have started just purchasing the device that I think is the best device available to me at the time and sticking with it for a year (or longer, if it keeps performing well, and nothing else at that time interests me). Any "flagship" device that you purchase right this minute should last you one year just fine, even if it's already 6 months old. The Moto X should perform just fine until at least next October when we can start thinking about the next big update to Android.
Anyone had luck getting them to do an advance exchange on a dev edition?

Very well stated and I agree. I have been bouncing around all of the flagships of late (N5, G2, HTC One) and finally landed on X. I am surprised at how peppy it is and do not notice any difference in performance next to the N5. Now I don't game at all on my phones but for everyday use the X is fantastic. I like the features and the fact that I can be rooted and still under warranty. Also I love that I don't have to obsess over roms like I was on the N5 and HTC One. Go Moto!!!! Obey Google Now!
How long does it take them to refund you after you send it back?

I was SO READY for a device that just WORKED. One that I didn't feel obligated to unlock, root, and flash a ROM every other weekend to keep it updated with the developer's bug fixes, because it lacked features I wanted or had a terrible OEM skin on it. I haven't even considered rooting my Moto X. Finally, a device from a manufacturer with a UI that's just barely kissed by OEM features, and features that are actually relevant. Coupled with the fact that Motorola usually has the best radios? I'm sold on "good guy Moto" again.

Convince me not to refuse my moto x pure...

Ordered September 11th. Delivery was supposed to be today. Has been stuck on being built ever since then. Just chatted online and said maybe 23rd.
It's a 64gb black/black leather with dark silver accent.
Another reason I'm losing interest is moto finally put some cases online. Ugly. Spigen and Rearth aren't selling cases for this phone on amazon either. Moto isn't selling the power support screen protectors which have been my favorite but are sold for very few phones. (My company issued us 6+'S and power support was out of stock on smooth protectors so i got matte and they're still damn good). Rearth and spigen don't have screen protectors or cases available either. Little reason for me to get this phone if I can't accessorize it properly. What say you guys?

Stick with iPhone? Are you nuts? It was company issued iPhone. It's terrible. I appreciated ios's strengths, but now owning one, I hate Apple's ui even more. The ui isn't all it's cracked up to be, not simple like so many people proclaim, it's a cluster**** and performance is slightly above par with kitkat. Doesn't hold a candle to marshmallow. That being said, android still has it's downfalls, but nowhere near as bad as android.
And,yes , accessories are a must for me. I already worry about my big ass note4 at my job. A cracked screened or borked phone could happen any moment. Good thing build quality is up to par. Don't mind l metal frame, i still would prefer a nice ergonomic plaastic. The moto x is looks good. Looks like it can handle my job dangers easily enough. Hate the striped back though. Dimple looks too low. But the original moto x was awesome minus being too small. The moto pure is an almost perfect note4, minus s pen, taking a hit on low light camera shots and the reception should be badass. My note4 isnt a slouch with reception , but moto and Nokia are king in that area.
Yes I am upset it's late. Not a big deal. Would've been nice if they updated status to reflect that. The lack of proper cases and screen protectors pushes it past the edge of not being a keeper. My job is too rigorous and dangerous to humans and phones to go without protection . moto reps have no idea or clue when accessories become available. Am really looking forward to having 64GB internal and 128 or 200GB external sd card. Just frustrated they're botching the launch out the gate. Looking for reasons to go with it. Our iPhone 6+ are at&t, but reception is still lacking. Moto should make up for that with T-Mobile. T-Mobile is making a come up in coverage. I wish their RIL's were more aggressive with 700mhz band. I know moto is pushing an update to remedy that soon. Also, looking forward to somewhat more timely updates, which Samsung and carriers have bombed. Can't believe the other 3 carriers haven't pushed 5.1.1 yet. And Samsung phónes are notorious for less than desirable updates. Seems the initial firmware and subsequent updates to same #'ed firmware are the only polished firmwares. 5.0.1 is terrible. And for those that don't know, the beta marshmallow on nexus5 is great compared to 5.1.1. I really think a lot of people will really enjoy how polished marshmallow is compared to 5.1.1. For example, using power save mode on marshmallow doesn't gimp phones like 5.1.1. Still hate the color change though when using power save mode. Im sure xposed will address that in near future.
Anyways, the lack of desirable accessories is making me less anxious to get it. If I don't have proper protection I can't carry it to work or use as daily driver. Hoping someone makes a great case/sales pitch that I should stick it out and try/keep it. I do like somethings about tpuchwiz, but the bloat, overweight tpuchwiz, bad ram management and physical buttons are hard to bear with. If my htc m8 supported 700mhz I'd probably be rolling withthat. It's been deprecated to fancy music player and phone to use when my note4 is being charged early before going to bed.
Somebody, change my mind. I really loved the original moto x but it was just too damn small. Barely, and I mean barely bigger than iPhone 5/5s. Impressed a lot of people.
Wow. I ordered mine the minute it went on sale and I've had mine since the 11th. Interesting. But yes, if you are looking for accessories than get the iPhone. That is the only thing iPhone have going for them.

Came from oneplusone. No complaints here. Ordered, received earlier than expected. If you think moto fiasco is horrible, your in for surprise. I love it, love it, and love it. Where are the devs at? Can't wait for roms that will make this device real deal pure edition. Pretty good now, im pretty certain it will be one of the best. OnePlus 1 running temasek rom feels better than moto x pure stock rom. I can't wait and hope leaving OnePlus optimism stays that way.

I think this phone is excellent. I like the things that matter most - the display, camera and speakers. Battery is good for me also. I can't imagine buying a phone based on accessories. That would have no influence on my decision.
Time for you to go back in Orbit.
You clearly stated your needs and wants the Moto doesn't fit those requirements for you.
Time to move on.

Rearth just released screen protectors - http://bit.ly/1KnOfrJ
Stuff's coming out, slowly but surely.
If you need us to convince you, chances are you don't want the device.
If you're worried about screen protectors, I bought this one and it's very durable, and I can't even tell it's on my phone.

That being said, this phone is great! If you don't already feel good about the purchase though it will sour the experience as long as you own it. Return it if you don't feel good about it. At least someone will get it as a refurb at a lower price that will appreciate it that way.

Thinking about this phone versus the other Flagships

I'm on my G3 right now -- happily using a rooted stock-based ROM from our very own XDA. My battery life has been decreasing a while now for years, so I think it's just time to replace my phone.
I was excited for the Pixel 2's, but all the screen problems have me worried. I think I've narrowed down my choices to:
Pixel 2
Moto Z2 Force
S8
Essential Phone, with the Price Drop
So I'm wondering which do you think I should get? This is on Verizon btw. I'm really torn and love my G3 so I'm really hesitant to get fully convinced to buy one.
Pixel 2: Better camera, fastest android update and "exclusive" features. Many of which you can install apps to get those feautures and eventually google will make them public, just like the assistant last year.
Moto Z force: Smaller battery than the Essential but you have many mods available.
S8: Samsung bloat is just horrible.
Essential: Hardware and build quality is great but we have very limited accesories. Stock android out of the box is amazing, no need of custom roms at the moment.
Ok, so want a new phone coming from my current Nexus 6P, which I love, but battery issues, and the speakers have gotten bad, so need a new phone in the next month or so. I originally liked the Pixel 2 XL, but for $950 for the 128GB version, I find that outrageous, especially with the poor bad displays most are shipping with, and news today they are failing Quality Control tests from Google too now. I paid $499 for my 64GB Nexus 6P brand new from Google, to me the Pixel 2 XL is what a Nexus 8P could have been, and would have priced like $599 or so. Out of principle I won't give Google the cash for a Pixel. But let's not go there with this discussion.
- Essential @ $499 ( root and ROM's supposedly should start coming in November )
- OnePlus 5T @ ? $550 ? ( 6" display, fingerprint scanner on the rear, 18:9 aspect ratio. Officially announcement due soon )
I want a stock Android type OS, with good battery life, that will get me 6h Screen On time or more. I want a bright display, and smooth OS. I always root my phones, and maybe a custom ROM too. And I want the price under $600. So Essential or OnePlus 5T ?

I came from the 6p then HTC u11. I love the essential. I always root and flash latest and greatest but that is not available and we may never see a strong dev community. With that being said the essential is amazing stock. Between the one plus and essential I think it'll come down to preference. The essential looks and feels great while the one plus looks very Samsung like. I do not regret the 700 I spent on the essential and might cancel my pixel 2 xl order after seeing all the screen issues. But I'll for sure keep the essential

I think that we all are missing an important feature from Essential, mods. Yes, we only have on the moment but maybe in a few months essential and third party will bring great features to the essential phone using mods. That for me gives an advantage to the essential over OP5T, because software and hardware are almost the same.

I purchased mine form Best Buy yesterday and it seems fine. I haven't even looked at the speaker grill and I'm not going to. My phone seems perfect so far, and if something goes wrong in the future, I'll just send it to Essential. All of the problems I've had in the last month with other flagships, the Essential phone is a breath of fresh air.
Edit...This phone against other flagships. I would either get this phone or the OnePlus. But I chose the Essential because of the beautiful hardware, and big screen on a small frame.

There have been complaints about the speaker grill on older phones. Apparently Essential used a piece of fabric as the speaker grill. This fabric seems to be damaged easily. If you get a newer phone, this fabric has been replaced with a something else, maybe metal, I don't know. I'm not going to worry about it though. There have also been reports of the newer phones having tougher ceramic on the back, more scratch resistant. That is pure speculation though. I say don't worry about these things, and enjoy your new phone. If you have a problem later, surely Essential will fix it.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. There is a thread with photos on Reddit about this. Essential was replacing older phones with new phones with an updated speaker grill, but now someone said that they are repairing the phones instead of replacing them. I don't think it's a big issue myself.

Edit...FYI, the speaker grill on last year's Pixel is also fabric.
