Root for Ultra/Maxx after 4.4 - Droid Ultra General

Has anyone been following the MotoX root method for Kit Kat seeing how it'll likely be the same for Ultra/Maxx? Wow! After seeing all the problems with RockMyMoto this method (assuming it'll work for us) is sure to be a doosie!

Lol one of the issues we won't face is downgrading I am so glad the moto x gets these updates before us. We get to see all the pitfalls.

I've been thinking of finding someone willing to trade a dev edition for a regular+cash. It didnt make sense to get it at the time when the Verizon store had them for $499 and the dev edition was $650-ish, but i'm starting to itch for some custom ROMs. All this waiting for official stuff is getting old.

I'm glad you asked because were already on 4.2.2 why would we downgrade. The moto x got the update and jcase hadn't created the exploit yet which requires you to be on 4.2.2 so they had to down grade. Jcase just updated the exploit and is looking for droid testers his instructions say to downgrade unless your already on 4.2.2 My advie is to not install the update yet if you want root. You will just have to downgrade its more work. If you take the update pull it and put on your PC don't install it. I have the updater frozen so as soon as the update is posted I will attempt to root again on 4.2.2 and install the update hope it works smoothly.

That clears things up immensly! Thanks for taking the time to explain the process. I am currently on 4.2.2 and rooted. I'm just waiting for the update to drop so I can make a copy for people who need it. Then I'll try to root the new update.

Here check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48648074#post48648074 im waiting for jcase to get back to me if we need to unroot. I would assume so a fxz of 4.2.2 would be the best platform to try this on. It seems fairly simple to be honest his instructions are very straight foward. I feel bad for the guys that took the update they have to downgrade.

Just FYI, adb shell getprop ro.boot.write_protect is still 0 after unrooting, stock 4.2.2, then taking the KitKat OTA. Might this make it easier to root 4.4 standalone? Or should I just go back down to 4.2.2 and follow slap?

1. Verify if downgrading back to 4.2.2 (12.15.15 firmware) is possible with the DROID line?

You can't root on 4.4 only 4.2.2 doesn't matter that write protection is off. i wish it was that simple.

I don't think it matters but that is a ? For jcase.

So in my excitement to flash 4.4, I forgot to take into account losing the root. So I tried to downgrade as per JCase's suggestion, but there's a big problem if you already successfully installed the OTA. It is an updated security signature and software. Because of this, RSD Lite and fastboot return with the error of "Flash failed. Downgraded security version". Does anyone have a workaround or an updated FXZ that will flash over 4.4 to revert back to 4.2.2 so I can try the JCase's backdoor method?

It doesn't unlock the bootloader. Just takes off the write protection so you don't need to reboot your phone into recovery to turn it off. Which allows you to use the actual stock recovery as well.

the implications of ROOT

hello!
i just got my N4 a few days ago...
didnt even change a ringtone yet... just downloaded some apps, and costumized the phone a-bit.
i do want to root, because some advanced actions such as recording calls (legal in my country) require root.
i was about to root using the Nexus 4 ToolKit posted here:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995688
but when i run it it always says its tookit ver v1.3.0, and a 1.6.0 is avilable, i update but when i re-run it, it says its 1.3 again...
and even if i go past this step and get to the "What build do you have?
the only answer i can pic is 4.2 (JOP24C)
and i own JOP24D (2.4.1) - will this be an issue?
and also - if i root my phone, and lets say androud 4.2.2 comes out a day later, does the phone still update? or do i stop getting updates as soon as im rooted?
TY!

alright cool i don't mind paying 5USD...
but what about the most important things?
does rooting 100% erase evetyhing?
Do i keep getting updates to my phone? or when a new version comes out i have to re-root or something?
It will erase EVERYTHING and you would have to go back to stock to get the OTA or wait for a build to be flashable

If the ROM got OTA (over the air) you can update i guess, not really populair with OTA, but you can download 4.2.2 stock ROM or custom ROM when it comes out.

as of now, unrooted, if 4.3(lets say) comes out tommorow, my device updates, bam.. im 4.3
if i root now, at 4.2.1, the above will not happen? meaning in order to update to 4.3 i will have to lose all my data again?

ashamed to say i didnt really get it.. lol.
you said OTA is "Over the Air", right?
so if i rooted at 4.2.1 (just rooted, no rom or anything), and 4.3 came out do i
1. Have to delete everything AGAIN and re-root on 4.3 to get the update
2. have to find the 4.3 file online and install it somehow
3. do nothing, the phone automatically gets updated

Getting root on your device does not delete anything. What deletes everything is unlocking the bootloader (which, at the present time, is required to obtain root). You only have to unlock the bootloader once. Once it is unlocked, getting root is trivial.
Every time you receive an over-the-air update, it will remove your root access, BUT, as I mentioned earlier, getting it back is trivial when your bootloader is unlocked.

The easiest way is to wait for the OTA notification to appear on your device. Then just accept it, and then root again.
I've written up something for the Galaxy Nexus (sticky in the GNex General section), but nothing yet for the N4. The basic premise (and most of the commands) are the same. You can browse through it for some background info.

4.4 and SlapMyMoto

Ok I'm trying to sift through all the information availble on multiple threads to figure this out. So if I use SMM and root my phone, I can then flash the 4.4 OTA and IF it goes through I am on 4.4 and rooted. Now if the OTA flash fails, I have to enter a bunch of adb commands to recover the phone on 4.4. If this happens am I still able to attain root with SMM?
Also I am on the original firmware, not even the 12.15 firmware. Can I flash straight to 4.4 after running SMM? Thanks in advance. After these questions are answered, I will be happy to make a guide for everyone to follow to safely get from stock firmware to 4.4 rooted.
I believe you have to take the 12.15.15 update. No once on 4.4 you can't root as of now.

Yes you can have root I have root on 4.4 you have to start the root process on 4.2.2. You have to root 12.15.15 then get permanent write off protection. Then use slap my moto take 4.4 update then finish the slap my moto exploit and your rooted.

How to preserve root from 4.1.2 to kit kat 4.4

Hello, I was wondering for those who kept root going from 4.1.2 to kitkat 4.4, how did you do it? My phone is currently locked but rooted and I just downloaded the OTA kit kat update but haven't installed it yet. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
No current method so don't upgrade if root is essential. Only unlocked bootloaders can get root back.

First off, in regards to TWRP, there is a newer version of CWM recovery that works with KK. Use that.
Second, the developer options have been hidden, but you have to pay me to get the info.
JUST KIDDING!
Here is what you do:
Go to settings.
Click on "About Phone"
Scroll down and then start mashing on "Build Number". It will inform you that you have so many presses before going to developer mode.
After that, it will give you a toast saying developer mode has been activated. You're done!
If someone could kindly put together a walk thru on
How to go from stock, rooted, and unlocked to kit Kat w/root
That would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
I am in the same boat, rooted on stock ROM. I don't want to lose root, but my phone keep popping up the update installer request. My phone has kept me so happy for so long that I have not kept up with the forums. I just haven't had any problems, and I'd like to keep it that way. So, is there no root for 4.2.2 yet? Or there just isn't a way to preserve it across the OTA? Should I go back to stock unrooted, update and re-root? I've been reading around the forums and I am just not seeing a whole lot of info about this yet.

if you have a LOCKED phone, there is NO way to have or preserve root going to KK
if you have a UNLOCKED phone, update to KK, flash the KK cwm, flash su zip in cwm, profit!
those are the only 2 options PERIOD.

you should unlock the bootloader first if you havent already. after you update you will no longer be able to ever.
as for the update, if you flash it with rsd there shouldnt be any issue that im aware of. if you unfreeze the updater and take the actual ota(s), it will not skip any, it will pull the next in line each time until you get to the most current.
however, you will still need to use rsd before taking or sideloading the KK ota or root will cause it to fail.

Once you update your phone, the bootloader can't be unlocked....as far as we know, ever again. If you don't care, which it sounds like you don't, go ahead and update your phone.

most people who dont unlock the bootloader when they had the chance regret not doing it. its not a problem if you dont want to, i was just giving you a heads up more or less.
as for the updates,(this has nothing to do with the bootloader) im pretty sure the first 2 will install fine but im positive the 3rd, KK, will fail because you had root before.
so if you want to go to KK, you really have no other option but to use rsd first to return your phone to stock.

Thanks bweN diorD and gadsden,
I appreciate the help. I only use my root access for killing music apps and I have some bloatware frozen. So personally I think I'll go ahead and update to KK since the benefits should outweigh the loss of root access for me. Should I do a factory reset first or should I be good to go taking the OTA?
Thanks again I'm always hesitant to do things to my phone because I don't have the knowledge to fix it or the money to replace it.

Just read this on Android Authority and was wondering if it would work. Great to hear this. Again, users got REAL lucky on this one considering this wasn't created specifically for this phone, but for the general population of unpatched 4.4.2 kernels.
Word of warning, if you used my UNIVERSAL script to flash 183 onto your phone, you must either manually flash the TZ partition or use my KEEP DATA script before rooting an unlocking else it will fail.
BTW, I just received an email notification from Motorola stating there is another soak test coming, so definitely root and unlocked your phones NOW and I can't stress that more than enough or else, you can kiss root and unlocking good-bye, especially if this is an 4.4.3 update. Once 4.4.3 comes out, /system is no longer writeable and things will get really ugly.
So, root and then unlock your phones on the 4.4.2 KK OTA before the next one comes out or you will be sorry.
BTW, if you're so worried about voiding your warranty, once you root, you've voided your warranty and there is a root checker built into the device, so they can tell if you've rooted or not, so if you're going to root, you might as well unlock the bootloader.
The warranty concern is nonsense. PLENTY of people sent back unlocked phones and no one ever complained. Yes, the soak emails were known about last night which is why we've been trying like hell to get this message out to everyone to get it done NOW. It's an almost certainty that the TZ partition will be secured again. And root will almost assuredly be patched since it was patched in the linux kernel on june 3rd. Unlocking is the surefire way of keeping root forever, and getting to play with new roms which is awesome. Plus, don't like kitkat? Downgrade with my UNIVERSAL script. (Yes, the one that's causing some problems for people unlocking. LOL). We can not stress this enough...NOW is the time to unlock before it's too late. I can't even begin to describe how lucky you all are.
One question. After I unlock the bootloader and they send out 4.4.3, will it be possible to take the update OTA?

yes but there may be some jumping through hoops like unrooting or sbfing but you will not lose any data and you can just reroot by flashing a superuser.zip . unless moto goes from nice to evil and this ota re locks boot loaders
That's what I'm wondering. Will they relock the bootloader or leave it be since these phones are nearly two years old.

Stop that. They're not going to relock the bootloader. However, screw OTA's. Wait for the FXZ to leak and use my RSD Script Generator to create a KEEP DATA or UNIVERSAL script and flash that with RSD. Flash custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) and flash supersu zip and be done with the whole thing. Forget unrooting and trying to make the OTA work. Too much effort. LMAO

See what you've done? These poor people are now paranoid about bootloader relocking. LOL! They won't relock it. It's physically blowing an eFuse to do the unlock. Relocking would be extremely problematic and cause more problems than they'd solve. And given the likelihood that this was "accidentally" done (cough cough) in the first place, there's an almost 0 chance of relocking.

i dont think they will and even if they did we could probably get around it with @SamuriHL universal script we would just have to wait until the sbf/fxz files come out
Which I'm recommending you do anyway.
I never unlocked the bootloader the first go round but I'm sure going to this time.

Good to hear. I want everyone with these phones to do so. This is a great opportunity. No one should be sitting on the fence this time.
Indeed great news. Too bad my XT926 is not by me right now(being used by my father) and I can get my hand on it till september.
My XT926 is bootloader locked and has JB 4.2. build is 9.18.94 I guess. I have my phone rooted and since then using safestrape 3.12 and has stock rom and RageHD ROM on it. I can remember last time trying to install OTA the update process failed even I have used voodoo root keeper to hide the root.
So now my questions:
1. Is the right procedure for me: Remove Safestrape->Install OTA KK->using methods described here for KK for unlocking?
2. What was the reason the OTA update failed? Safestrape?
3. Can I uninstall Safestrape through it's "uninstall" function?
4. After uninstall if I choose OTA update, will it be the current KK which contains this old exploit for bootloader unlocking?
5. If I wait till september to do it myself, if there is another OTA out which patches this exploit again, can I fake a Moto web site and pointing it to the current KK (183), lets say change the host file on XT926. Is this even possible?

yes that is what i posted
Rooted and unlocked using the apk's. Doesn't get any easier than that. Now what is the preferred custom recovery for most of you?

Thanks billycar11!
From the description I see that the script will flash a 760MB file, the KK 4.4.2 (KDA20.62-10.1). So I won't be afaid that when I wait for some months even if Moto patched their OTA for this bootloader exploit, the unpatched bootloader is still in (KDA20.62-10.1), which I assume is build 183, so I will still be able to use this exploit, as long as my phone is in JB (4.2) state?

there is no jb 4.2 i think you mean 4.1..2 . but you will not be able to use it on jelly bean you need to update to kitkat root then unlock.

Republic Wireless Soak Tests 4.4.4 - I have the update!

So I got chosen for the 1000 user soak test. Sadly I seem to be unable to take it. I have an unlocked bootloader an am rooted. I tried to remove Xposed Framework and unroot, but with no success.
When I revert back to a clean 4.4.2, I loose the soak test it seems. I have captured the update file though. You guys can dig through it.
I also tried to use the fastboot command "update (filename)" but got some errors. You guys let me know what you think.

Thanks friend, I've been waiting for someone to capture the OTA. Have you attempted to revert to clean 4.4.2 using the sbf yet? I am going to try just that. I've never put together a flahable update .zip but I'll attempt to make a rooted update out of this if I'm successful (unless someone beats me to it).

I need to flash back to a clean 4.4.2 then rename the file update.zip, put it into /sdcard then boot into recovery to take the update. I'll keep everyone posted. I'm still at work for 6-8 more hours.

Thanks, I did the same thing and successfully updated to 4.4.4. I'll root and try to make a TWRP-flashable update to save others the hassle of using the sbf.
But in the meantime, heres the instructions I posted when the 4.4.2 update was captured early if anyone doesn't want to wait: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52113875
THANKS!
Worked perfectly on mine! Thanks you! I wiped cache before rebooting as well. Phone seems more fluid again. :good:
It worked !!!!!
Just tried twice on my 1st gen MotoX. The update.zip file aborted both times. Guess I'll wait for the RW update - anyone else had any luck ???
UPDATE:
The zip file was corrupted, redownloaded went smoothly - THX
4.4.4 Downgrade?
Hello folks,
This is my first time here on the forums. So I could be asking some pretty noob questions. However about 2 months ago RW sent me a moto x 2013 for my hard efforts as a salesman. And being only 17 years old with a free phone was amazing. So I had 4.4.3 since its been here. And I by mistake updated today to 4.4.4. And now my root is lost and my phone is sloe as can be. And my girlfriend already hates how long it takes to send a text. Any help for a brother to downgrade to 4.4.3 or 4.4.2? Or at least a stable root for 4.4.4 for the time being as I wait for the s6 edge to come out. Thanks in advanced mates!
Is there a way to get the whole image?

You can't unless you buy a code from the "Chinese middleman" if they are even still around.

As far as I'm aware, he isn't around anymore (glad I got to him when I did), so the only means of unlocking the RW Moto X's bootloader is to somehow find one that was never updated to 4.4.4 and use Sunshine
