Major design flaw? - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) General

the physical home button was something I did not think would bother me but it is a major design flaw. When putting the device in a case and closing the cover while in sleep mode the cover presses the home button taking a tablet out of sleep mode. so as I carry the tablet the screen turns off and on. this is with a case that uses the four corner tab design. Hopefully, a different case design will solve the issue.
This is the only issue I have had but it is driving me nuts.

hopefully with root we'll be able to disable that. why they chose not to recess the button is beyond me.

I wonder if a case that activates auto screen off and on blocks that from happening.
Does anyone have a case with that built in that could let us know.

Thanks for the info...There are two sides to this coin. It could be a design flaw that the case accidentally clicks the home button. Isn't it their responsibility to design the case properly?

Note 8 has the same button design, I have it since the release date with Samsung's book cover, it hasn't been a problem. Waiting for a similar case for 10.1.

Interesting stance on the Spen from Samsung

Well like some others here I have a faulty S-Pen. It starts interacting with the screen about 1-2cm away which is VERY frustrating. After seeing some threads here I got in touch with Samsung Customer Support and this is what I got.

I've had an issue with my s-pen over the last few weeks. The pen will ''''click'''' or ''''draw '''' something on the screen when its about 1-2cm away from the screen.
This makes annotation and drawing very difficult as it keeps pressing when I do not mean to.
Is this a firmware issue or hardware issue? From what I''''ve read online it looks to me to be hardware related.
Many thanks,

Dear Ben
Thank you for contacting Samsung.
I'm afraid that the s-pen is designed to work in this manner. It is an option that most customers tend to prefer so that the screen does not actually have to be touched/scratched by the pen. I'm sorry if this is an inconvenience to you.
If you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and we will be more than happy to help.

Well, that's not how I would want the S-Pen to work and for me that's not how it does work so I'd suggest you get back to them and explain that what you have is a definite problem.
For me the S-Pen does pretty much exactly what you (or any other sane person) would want - it takes a gentle but quite deliberate contact with the screen to make anything happen.
This is the same problem I have it really is frustrating :-!

The pen should be detected when slightly above the surface of the screen, that's how my Wacom tablet works as well, but it should never "click" without actually touching the surface so there's definately something wrong.
You could try to calibrate your sensors and do a factory reset. If neither solve the problem then I would press Samsung to send a replacement pen.

I've resetted, tried different roms and the only way I can get it to work normally is by moving the end of the pen. Its only a temporary solution though and only lasts a few minutes.
It's deffinately a hardware fault within the pen, its a tiny rubber o-ring between the magnet and the coil which breaks up over time allowing them to stay in contact when they shouldnt be, I replaced mine with cotton and it works like a charm now.
Samsung are talking out their arse's!
This is definately not normal behaviour as it defeats the whole purpose of the pen being pressure sensitive and it's just a load of bull that's what people prefer as it screws up any accuracy. I'm not aware of any setting that would invoke this behaviour so I'd say it's definately a hardware related issue.

My thoughts? Sorry for nerding, but the answer is: LOL! If this is how it´s designed to work, millions of users (including me) are using a defect device.
The only way to reproduce this pen-behaviour is to lie down on your bed and to use the Note with the screen pointing to the ground (technical reasons).
That confirms that the s-pen is scratching the screen!

Samsung technical support are crap. I rang them because my 7.7 went into a boot loop every time I powered off and had to let the battery go flat to escape from the loop. The solution they suggested was to never power off and when I argued that I should be able to power down they hung up on me. I returned the 7.7 to Amazon for a re-fund within the 30 days and got a replacement from Hong Kong with 3g for £60 less.
I'm glad samsung is not in automobile or aviation industry - people would die because of such a low quality control.
I think they might send you a free air compressor, when you tell them that the pressure sensivity doesn't work at 2cm above the screen without

Official MOTO G Flip Case, messes up google maps!!! [UPDATE]

I bought the official flip case. It has a magnet in the front. Unfortunately Moto have used a rather powerful neodinium magnet. So, your phones magnetometer will follow the edge of the case around rather than true north!!!! This doesn't matter for gps navigation, but for on foot travel, and any augmented reality apps that use the compass this case will make the behave oddly.
I don't know what the long term effect on the phones compass will be, but I don't expect it to be good.
In addition, but for me I think it is a small risk, this magnet will be capable of damaging some computer storage mediums and possibly, wiping swipe card data...
I have no idea why they chose to use such an aggressive magnet. I can hang the phone from a metal bar with it, no problem.
Just thought I would share....

Yes sir, you should that. It is ridiculous to make such design mistake on an official case. I was about to buy one but after reading your story I am not sure anymore. Keep us posted.
Btw; you can contact Motorola via their official app Moto Care.
Glad to know, that I am not the only one who is concerned about that magnet. By the way there are two magnets. A weak one to trigger the screen on/off and a strong magnet to keep the case closed.
After removing the strong magnet you will be able to use the compass with the cover flipped to the backside.

Edit: The strong magnet was on the lower third, where the cut is visible.

I have noticed today that even when I remove the case, the magnetic sensor is all messed up. It seems after a week of use it has screwed up the sensors calibration (probably correctable)..
evidently, part of the cheap price is a lack of proper beta testing of the phone and accessories....

there is a small metal square on the inside of the flip cases backcase. I 'think' this is intended to shield the sensor from the magnet when the case is open. It clearly is TOTALLY inadequate to the task. I'm speculating this is what the metal square is for, as it corresponds in position exactly with one of the magnets in the case door, and this metal square is not present on the normal back case..
Simply lazy design and testing... why does it even need a magnet to stay closed :/ its like closing a book with a magnet lol, they get along fine without them!!!!

We regret that there is no possible solution. Compasses operate by magnetic field, and any interference with any compass magnet. There is no way around this.
If you are using a Motorola original case, rest assured that will not hurt your terminal. Imam to close the lid affects the compass but not strong enough to damage the terminal or delete any internal memory power. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I don't understand, are you saying you work for motorola? was this a response you got from motorola??
Motorola cannot release an OFFICIAL ACCESSORY!! at a premium price (£20) that causes issues for the core functionality of the device. I will press the issue with motorola until they acknowledge their mistake and resolve to provide me with a refund, equivalent compensation or a replacement back cover that doesn't cause these problems.
Imagine if you bought a New car; You bought official seat covers for your car that the manufacturer heavily marketed to you, but they make the satnav useless. Do you think any car manufacturer would ever get away with this??

As long as the flip shell is folded completely over (so it is flush with the back) my wife's compass works flawlessly. It's actually better than my n4. As I only have one sample to go off of I'm not saying this issue is being over hyped but it isn't always an issue

I've tried it this way. If you fold it completely flat, and line it up to the millemeter, the compass works about 50% well. It generally adjusts to north, but it flicks back and forth between north and where the magnet is on the case. You can also see the gauss meter jumping around a lot.
I suspect the magnetic power of the magnets in the case vary a large amount they wont be very expensive ones after all..

[Q] Capacitive Back Button Sensitivity

I noticed that the back capacitive button is not as sensitive as the multi-task capacitive button. At first, I thought I wasn't pressing the back button at the right place, but after testing it, it turns out that the bottom of the lit area requires much more pressure before it registers a touch. I compared it against the multi-task button and the Galaxy Note 3. Unfortunately, it appears that my Galaxy Note 4 capacitive back button does not register touches on the bottom half unless more pressure is used. Interestingly, the back capacitive button responds to the slightest stylus touch.
I do have a Spigen screen protector on, but it does not affect the sensitivity of the multi-task button, so I figure it doesn't affect the back button, either.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Thanks in advance.
I dont feel like mines sensitive enough either sometimes.i have to press twice
I thought I was going crazy staring at every press on the back button. I have the same issue. Have to press it more then once. I just used my spen and noticed that the top of the back button above the arrow does not register a touch. The multitasking button does on the top and bottom.

So is this a hardware issue? Should I return phone?
Sent from the TermiNOTEr 4!
Glad and sad to know that I'm not alone. It looks like a hardware issue to me, but it might be something that affects most of the phones. I'm waiting to see if other people reply to this thread without this issue.
This issue is annoying, but it's not worth exchanging if I receive a unit that's the same, worse, or has a bad screen (I read a review where the reviewer said his unit had dead/stuck pixels near the top, though it could be a review unit concern). I'm going to the Sprint Store to check out the display unit to compare it against mine. If the display unit has a proper back button, then I might consider.
Checked out the display unit and its back button was far more functional. Exchanged mine and the newer one also has a better capacitive back button.

Mine is also not as sensitive as I'm use to. Maybe it's meant to be that way though? It's a possibility Samsung did that to reduce the instances of accidental back button presses, but that's just a wild guess.
That makes sense but why don't we have many people complaining about it? Is this a real issue or people are thinking they are not pressing the button correctly.

I'm sorry to hear about that. I had a Spigen Crystal screen protector on, but it did not affect the sensitivity, as the multi-task button worked perfectly. It was definitely a hardware issue solely. I applied another Spigen Crystal to the new phone and there are no issues (it came in a 3-pack).
I don't think many people are complaining about it because it's only affecting a small percentage.

I don't think that it's intended. When I took it back to the Sprint Store, the sales rep tried it out and instantly recognized that it was defective. The display unit and my new unit both have proper sensitivity.

I am having the exact same problem with the back button... my struggles with getting it to work properly led me to search for others with the same issue. I'm glad that I am reading that it is not all the devices and that exchanging the Note 4 for a new one may solve the problem, as it did for a previous poster. It is frustrating that the local Verizon store does not have them in stock, and doesn't know when they will... so I guess I'll wait it out - kills the high of getting to play with/setup the new Note 4...:

I have seen that screen uniformity issue in both the Note 3 and the Note 4. As far as I can tell, every Note 4 is going to have it to some degree. The gap is around the top left corner. Not bad but the first one I had was pretty much gap free. Doesn't really matter that much cause I have a case that covers it. Out of sight out of mind. So the back button seems to be better with new note. Glad I made the exchange. The only thing is that I lost my glass screen protector. Didn't want to take it off cause it would be useless to me anyways. So I applied a screen protector from my note 2. Works great covered the entire screen. The only thing it doesn't reach to the top. Just something to hold me over until I get some news ones. Also this phone seems to be much quicker than the last one. Could be a placebo effect. I also lucked on a new charger and spen tips. Guy at best buy left charger and tips. I just exchanged phone.

S-PEN feels loose

I'vehad the Note 4 for a few days and the S-Pen feels quite loose to me. It can even move around a 1mm when in its silo.

Try putting the pen in with the button facing down. Seems if it's facing up, it does jiggle a little.
It actually feels more firm with button facing down. But it doesn't solve the problem completely in my case
lol, same story here. just wanted to create a tread...
i have 3 note4's at the moment (due to display problems): 2 of them have loose spen, at one device it sits tight like on my note3!
a solution is to put one or two layers of transparent tape around the silver end of the s-pen, although i do not prefer this method
as it looks not good...
I decided to return my device on Thursday since it was actually bothering me, but funny thing is Samsung is still claiming it is not a defect and studying my case. They even went as far as show me another unit with the same problem.
I really hope upcoming batches will have it ironed out.
Does anyone know a solution in fixing the loose s-pen? The one with tape doesn't work out well, and is not really aesthetic...
Have you tried comparong inserting the S-Pen with the button facing up and facing down? I had the same problem on my 10.1 2014 and it was much tighter when the button was facing down in the case. I know it's not a solution, but it might help.

Do about 20 jumping jax with phone in hand. If the spen slips out of place its a defect.
You could then argue it has s heath and should allow you to run with device.
Mine is snug, my Note 3 was a bit loose but it never fell out or anything. I guess if it's inside the silo and doesn't slip out with normal usage it's not a defect.
i added now one layer (one wrung around) of clear tape (which i do not like aesthetically!!), and now the spen sits tight.
button up or down didn't change anything for me...
now, with the pen tight, the device feels a lot more "solid", so for me the loose pen is a defect...
maybe adding a point of glue would also do the trick, i will experiment a little with that...

Can someone define 'loose s pen'? I put mine in pressed in all the way. If I wiggle my finger on it, it slight jiggles, but not to the point where it falls off. I have never noticed this on any note before. I wouldn't say its a defect, but more of an annoyance.

S Pen included with my Note 4
Hi i have 2 seperate questions about the S Pen. 1st. Has anyone removed the button on the pen to try to adjust the potentiometers for sending the pen thinner or thicker? I saw a pic of a note 4 S Pen with the button removed on this forum somewhere 2 days ago & it showed the pen having 2 round very small adjustable screw like things & they where explaining which way to turn the front one to adjust it, but I removed my button just to look at it & in my S Pen there is no adjustment mechanisms at all & there's only one round thing total so I'm just curious to see whether it's the same for all note 4 buyers or not?
2nd. I thought I heard something about Samsung developing & very soon making available for sale a newer updated S Pen for the note 4 & note edge to include Rotation & Tilt which was originally supposed to be included with both phones on release days of each. Does anyone know any info at all about this?

I keep accidentally pressing the power and volume buttons

It's like this phone was made for lefties. These buttons are poorly placed and really sensitive, and I keep activating them, especially when i pick the phone up. I had a Speigen tough armor case on my note 4 which flattened out the buttons, and made them less sensitive to press (you'd have to really press them to activate them, on the 6p they activate the moment you touch them).
Does anyone know of a similar case like the one I mentioned for the 6P? this is my only issue, otherwise i love the phone, but it's a very big issue, and I'm considering a Note5, or holding out for the Note 6 if I cant resolve it.
Thanks guys!
Jason

You can use any case and simply make sure to shorten the button parts on the inside of the case. This will decrease the sensitivity.
I have little sensitivity with my Speck CandyShell case. The buttons feel good...

There's Pilz Speck Candy case review and pictures (show content) here
I have the same problem with this phone.
The Adopted case sold through google store makes it a lot worse. Would post a link but being I am a new user I cannot.

I'm waiting on delivery for a few different cases, I'll let you know if any of them help to lessen this issue.

I kept pressing the volume and power button too, but slowly learned to hold the phone differently.
Speck CandyShell case helped me a lot when replacing my Adopted case....

I have a Chinese made case by Nillkin. It causes the buttons to be recessed and that decreases the sensitivity for me.

Lol same. I actually used to hold my phone in my left hand because of my First HTC. Then after using Samsung I switched. Only to switch back with the 6P.
"Well I keep accidentally hitting the power and volume buttons"
Well just stop it.

Just got the first case, it's the RhinoShield CrashGuard Bumper , and it completely solves this issue. You have to really press the buttons to activate them, otherwise it is nearly impossible to accidentally do so. I'm completely satisfied, I doubt I'll find a case which better resolves this issue, although I have a few more on the way , so I'll report back on them when they arrive.
The only minor downside to this case, is it has no back, which I normally wouldn't mind at all, except that the 6p has a very slippery back, , and my fingers slide a bit on it if I'm not holding the edges really well. Mostly this is a non issue since I almost always only hold the edges, but i do need to be a bit more careful when using the phone one handed.
I'm really impressed, and I'm never impressed.

Just got two more cases, the Google Nexus 6p case, and the Adopted protected case. They are both very similar, and great cases. Both also resolve the button sensitivity issue. Great fit on both, they both are slightly tacky on the sides as well. The only real difference is the Google case has some kind of weird industrial carpet type of material on the back, and the Adopted case is plain rubber/plastic. I like the Google one slightly better. I'm also waiting on a back protector for the Rhino bumper, which is also a great option.
