I don't get it(and I mean no offense at all, I really think I want this phone) but they give you a super big screen, but then it seems like the resolution is super high, like running 640x480 on a 24" monitor. Feels like it defeats the purpose to me.
I am still on my note and generally end up changing the dpi down to 240, which is more to my liking, and I imagine I can do that on a rooted note 3 as well, if not now, eventually. Just seems thats not an option for the phone from jump. And I haven't messed with touchwiz in a while but is it still limited to 5 icons wide, or have they updated to 6? Currently running 7 wide on my note 1, and would think 7 or 8 would probably work best for me on an even larger screen? I would love to keep the phone stock, just wish it could do what I want while keeping it stock.
I mean looking at the screenshot again just the amount of space the home screen indicator takes up, seems like you could fit a whole other row of icons there. And maybe you(by you I mean you, or anyone else) don't need or want that many icons on the home screen. But maybe I want a nice picture on there but still have enough room for some icons without really covering the pic.
Congrats on the new phone though, and seriously, wasn't trying to rain on your parade at all, the phone is awesome.

Yeah, I agree. With a 1920x1080 screen, it definitely looks (and works) better with smaller icons and more rows/columns. Unless I'm missing something, touchwiz is still very limiting as far as personalization goes. I'm back on go launcher, which I used on my previous phone (Note 1).

How do I share my screen shot to this forum?

I'm using ADW EX launcher, and the background is a live wallpaper called World View.
Enjoy!
here my homescreen
using folder organizer, switchPro Widget and minimalistic text...
feel simple and smooth with ONE homescreen
minimalist, maximal functionality
Amateurs! Here's how minimalism is done. If it were possible to swipe this tablet one-handed, then possibly there'd be an argument for more than one, but otherwise one home page goes without saying. Black background so that you can always see what you're doing, plus the sensuality of black's depth that makes black the new black.
I can't find a working app sorter to render the system apps tray usable, so Folder Organizer on the top two rows makes everything available--and I still have four slots open. The next two rows are my Dropbox shortcuts to immediately access frequently used file locations. I currently only need four of the sixteen slots, so that next row is devoted to two tider-overs: 1) a widget for enabling/disabling the lockscreen fills in for the Widgetsoid widget that doesn't work; and 2) on the left side is my biggest risk: a reboot button ergonomically placed so that it's never accidentally actuated, which I know will eventually happen at the worst possible moment.
Below that, it's all Widgetsoid with so much room remaining to expand for frequently used apps that I can sculpt my lower three rows into the Michaelangelo's David that you're presently beholding. Top Widgetsoid row devoted to settings, with state toggles separated so that their state is displayed, while the remainder are always highlighted. Finally, two rows of apps grouped in Widgetsoid widgets by the way I consider they function in my workflow. From left to right, then down, you've got system utilities, media, time, word processing, and internet. That bottom left Widgetsoid is getting crowded--I need three pdf readers because they all suck in some way--but the others still have slots open. A ting'o'beauty, no?

Who the heck is responsible for the 4x4 grid??

I´m sorry if this has been posted before - but I can´t stand the fact, that Samsung shows such a massive effort for software optimizations and special functions, which CLEARLY are pushing the Note III to the top of every smartphone list - while, at the same time, STILL messing around with the restricted grid system in TW.
How can ANYBODY (that keeps an eye on the smartphone market and on the success of alternative launchers) think that a 4x4 grid (- on such a big device with such a great resolution -) is a good idea, looks good, feels good, makes sense or simply is a good choice??
I hate the restriction in general - it shouldn´t be that a problem to simply integrate a "free choice" function into the almighty TW. But hey, you Samsung guys...a 4x4? really?? I even used a 6x7 grid on my S3.
Sorry, perhaps it´s just my mood...

no, you are right. They have had this problem from the first note. Someone in their R&D department isn't doing their job properly or someone higher up is screwing with us. With samsung's resources, it really shouldn't be that hard to let us customize the launcher through some secret menu or something.
If you're talking about the launcher then simply install Apex or Nova. That's the first thing I do with a new phone. I can't remember the last time I saw a native TouchWiz launcher.

I've been using a 10 (+1) x 7 grid on my Note 1 w/Nova and I am already happy for the extra row I will be able to add on the taller screen of the III (this is going to be my 4S to 5 moment )

I always replace the launchers. Just for the gestures alone. Swiping up or down or even more complex gestures for actions etc.
Im pretty sure some ROMS offer custom row densities on TW.

Do you lose any Touchwiz functionality by installing a different launcher from the Play Store?

Here is my 8x9 grid on the 4 inch Galaxy S. This translates to an 11x13 grid on the note 3's 5.7 inch.
I really like this icon size. It's perfect for the size of the fingertip.
This way I only have one launcher pane and I don't need to swipe left and right.

Normally no. However this version swiping up launches the magazine app.
But like I said most custom launchers have a custom swiping feature. So you can make a swipe up down double tap etc do almost anything you want . apex and nova are the most popular.

Sweet-ass app!

This app is really cool. It rounds the corners of the screen and makes things look pretty damn nut-sweatingly glorious. It's called roundr, found it on the store today:

Update: Just ticked "overlap status bar"
Dear sir:
As you may be aware of, due to recent litigation against Samsung USA, the courts have upheld Apple's patent on rounded corners in all present and future mobility devices. We respectfully request that you do not download, distribute or promote the use of anything that produces rounded corners with anything other than an Apple approved device. Failure to comply will result in a multitude of rabid, foaming Apple fanboys being sent to correct the issue.

Use a third party launcher they will have a black bar, at least that's how it is on my Nexus 4 running 4.4.
Or if you have a Nexus 4 and running custom rom or Xposed modules, you can set the status bar and navbar to be transparent, switch to a third party launcher, and blacklist that launcher using RoundR Extrensions, of course you'll lose the Okay Google in the process.
The app's blacklisting the Google launcher itself doesn't work right now.
This app is pretty awesome! If only the notification could do something useful like battery life or something and if it worked with the transparent bottom nav bar I would totally keep it!
This app works great when opening apps, and the status/nav bars turn black. The dev should have the option not to enable on homescreen and only activate when apps are open. (if its possible) then this would be a beauty.

Google launcher experience

I just want to share with all of you my experience with Google launcher. After installing the launcher, I notice the tablet is running really smoothly. No lags at all. Also apps open faster and reduce battery usage. Please do the same and share your experience here and let us know.
Note: if you are a big fan of the magazine UI you will lose it because it is a part of the TouchWiz. Not a big deal for me for faster performance, it is actually worth losing this feature.

Just think, we've paid a premium for a screen that's a little over 10 inches wide in landscape and launchers like this or Touchwiz piss away about 3 inches of it on margins. This is my #1 reason for installing Nova Prime within 20 minutes of owning the tablet LOL.

Yeah true. I guess its just the novelty of sideloading Google Launcher that's not really made for the Note Pro or something. I found it way too limited compared to Nova. I had Nova Prime on my Note Pro within a few minutes out of the box!
Wow clean home screen.
I try to use as much as I can on mine LOL.
Back on topic though I wouldn't mind always on search from Google Now Launcher. I currently run Switchr as a left sided swipe action so I wouldn't make use of the swipe for Google Now.
Currently I have long press of home button to trigger Google Now and then have to say Ok Google to bring up voice search (or double tap home to bring up Samsung's S-Search which I never use).
^ Those Widgets look great. Specifically the weather, calendar and tasks. Mind saying what those are?
I usually keep my main homepage pretty clear but have calendars and other Widgets on the secondary pages. But the Note Pro is so big there's room to stretch out a bit!
Anyone care to share their Google now apk. Thanks in advance

There's one thing that bugs the crap out of me with the google kitkat launcher. When you hold down on the home screen and it brings up the 3 icons for wallpapers, widgets, and settings. "Settings," when you press it, it takes you to GOOGLE settings. The settings app that most people are unaware even exists. I keep forgetting and clicking on it hoping for the normal settings. Annoys me to no end. I always immediately revert to nova at that time.
There is a xposed module to configure the GEL called "xposed gel settings"

Different launchers ?

I have been testing out a few launchers such as next 3d go and nova and not really sure why people use these? The changes are minimal such as desktop transition and that's about it? I know you can use icon packs which is nice.
What do you see in your launcher ? I am most likely going to.buy Go or next 3d but not sure which. It seems some lag depending on which launcher I use.

I enjoy the google experience launcher. It's free and paired with the xposed GEL settings it's comparable to all other paid launchers. I recommend checking them out.

I used Go Launcher prior to the release of Jelly Bean. After that, it seemed the Go Team had really fallen behind the times on what Android is capable of.
I've experimented with Next 3D on occasion. I love the effects, transitions, etc. But I've never felt I had more actual functionality than when I run Nova (or Apex for that matter).
I personally use the paid version of Nova (Prime). First and foremost to support the app developer, but you also receive about twice as more usable features on Nova Prime. Desktop backup is a great example! For those of us who flash ROMs a lot, this is an awesome feature.
Launchers are always about preference and how you use your phone. I saw a thread on here about people emailing each other Go Launcher Beta 5.0 invites. My personal thought was.... "really.. Go launcher... On Kit Kat!? That's just stupid...." LOL.
But again, some people love it and swear by it, just like I do with Nova Prime. I think every launcher brings it's own unique thing to Android...

I use aviate now cause it's so basic and simple. I've used nova and apex and thought like you. They barely changed anything.
Quantum matrix is a fun launcher. Probably the only true 3d one. All your apps are in the cube. Apps on corners are shown on all sides. You can have folders with more cubes in them. Was a fun launcher. But i like playing around with new stuff.
Went to TSF and I loved that. Literally performs like a pc desktop in that no more grid pattern. Place stuff where you want even on top of each other. Doesn't matter. No form you must stick to. Was so much fun. Even can spin then slightly so icons are on an angle. So many little tweaks too. Very fun launcher but very costly.
Only reason I use aviate now is i wanted something really simple and plain and this works. Will change up in a few months probably when i want something new

I always end up back with Nova. It works so well, yet adds useful features at a reasonable pace. It's the best mix of functionality and freedom. Definitely buy Prime.
I think I've used all the rest, and they are fun. Themer is a nice novelty, TSR is great in a big phone, Next is slick with a ton of little touches, but Nova hits it right.

Nova just got updated last month, but they didn't really add much. It isn't the 'flashiest' of launchers but IMO it's definitely the smoothest and snappiest.

Nova Prime isn't the launcher. it's the unlock key for Nova premium features.

Why would it need to be updated? It's just an unlocker for Nova...

I think he just assumed it was a separate launcher app. Like Next and Next Lite.

I use NOVA Launcher prime it's the best for custom themes imo.
