Who the heck is responsible for the 4x4 grid?? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I´m sorry if this has been posted before - but I can´t stand the fact, that Samsung shows such a massive effort for software optimizations and special functions, which CLEARLY are pushing the Note III to the top of every smartphone list - while, at the same time, STILL messing around with the restricted grid system in TW.
How can ANYBODY (that keeps an eye on the smartphone market and on the success of alternative launchers) think that a 4x4 grid (- on such a big device with such a great resolution -) is a good idea, looks good, feels good, makes sense or simply is a good choice??
I hate the restriction in general - it shouldn´t be that a problem to simply integrate a "free choice" function into the almighty TW. But hey, you Samsung guys...a 4x4? really?? I even used a 6x7 grid on my S3.
Sorry, perhaps it´s just my mood...

no, you are right. They have had this problem from the first note. Someone in their R&D department isn't doing their job properly or someone higher up is screwing with us. With samsung's resources, it really shouldn't be that hard to let us customize the launcher through some secret menu or something.

If you're talking about the launcher then simply install Apex or Nova. That's the first thing I do with a new phone. I can't remember the last time I saw a native TouchWiz launcher.

10x7
I've been using a 10 (+1) x 7 grid on my Note 1 w/Nova and I am already happy for the extra row I will be able to add on the taller screen of the III (this is going to be my 4S to 5 moment )

Jesus..looks like someone spilled a bag of apps on your screen.
I always replace the launchers. Just for the gestures alone. Swiping up or down or even more complex gestures for actions etc.
Im pretty sure some ROMS offer custom row densities on TW.

No. It looks even worse than apple's implementation of the launcher. Scattered.

4x4 yuck!
i hope someone figure out the knox system without voiding your warranty. i've been itching for custom rom on my to-be note 3!

4x4 works for me on my Note 2 ... you can put multiple apps into a folder. I don't see why Samsung can't offer a denser layout for those that need or want it.

Do you lose any Touchwiz functionality by installing a different launcher from the Play Store?

I suspect the 4x4 launcher was VERIZON'S doing.

can this be a thing. Like the blame obama meme but now we blame verizon for everything?

Here is my 8x9 grid on the 4 inch Galaxy S. This translates to an 11x13 grid on the note 3's 5.7 inch.
I really like this icon size. It's perfect for the size of the fingertip.
This way I only have one launcher pane and I don't need to swipe left and right.

Apex. Its maximum is 10x10.
Nova can do 16x16 through some secret taps.
I'm hoping Apex gets its maximum increased by the time I get my note 3, as I like it better than nova.

Normally no. However this version swiping up launches the magazine app.
But like I said most custom launchers have a custom swiping feature. So you can make a swipe up down double tap etc do almost anything you want . apex and nova are the most popular.

I don't get it(and I mean no offense at all, I really think I want this phone) but they give you a super big screen, but then it seems like the resolution is super high, like running 640x480 on a 24" monitor. Feels like it defeats the purpose to me.
I am still on my note and generally end up changing the dpi down to 240, which is more to my liking, and I imagine I can do that on a rooted note 3 as well, if not now, eventually. Just seems thats not an option for the phone from jump. And I haven't messed with touchwiz in a while but is it still limited to 5 icons wide, or have they updated to 6? Currently running 7 wide on my note 1, and would think 7 or 8 would probably work best for me on an even larger screen? I would love to keep the phone stock, just wish it could do what I want while keeping it stock.
I mean looking at the screenshot again just the amount of space the home screen indicator takes up, seems like you could fit a whole other row of icons there. And maybe you(by you I mean you, or anyone else) don't need or want that many icons on the home screen. But maybe I want a nice picture on there but still have enough room for some icons without really covering the pic.
Congrats on the new phone though, and seriously, wasn't trying to rain on your parade at all, the phone is awesome.

Yeah, I agree. With a 1920x1080 screen, it definitely looks (and works) better with smaller icons and more rows/columns. Unless I'm missing something, touchwiz is still very limiting as far as personalization goes. I'm back on go launcher, which I used on my previous phone (Note 1).

Google launcher experience

I just want to share with all of you my experience with Google launcher. After installing the launcher, I notice the tablet is running really smoothly. No lags at all. Also apps open faster and reduce battery usage. Please do the same and share your experience here and let us know.
Note: if you are a big fan of the magazine UI you will lose it because it is a part of the TouchWiz. Not a big deal for me for faster performance, it is actually worth losing this feature.

Holy wide margins Batman!
Just think, we've paid a premium for a screen that's a little over 10 inches wide in landscape and launchers like this or Touchwiz piss away about 3 inches of it on margins. This is my #1 reason for installing Nova Prime within 20 minutes of owning the tablet LOL.

Yeah true. I guess its just the novelty of sideloading Google Launcher that's not really made for the Note Pro or something. I found it way too limited compared to Nova. I had Nova Prime on my Note Pro within a few minutes out of the box!
Wow clean home screen.
I try to use as much as I can on mine LOL.
Back on topic though I wouldn't mind always on search from Google Now Launcher. I currently run Switchr as a left sided swipe action so I wouldn't make use of the swipe for Google Now.
Currently I have long press of home button to trigger Google Now and then have to say Ok Google to bring up voice search (or double tap home to bring up Samsung's S-Search which I never use).
^ Those Widgets look great. Specifically the weather, calendar and tasks. Mind saying what those are?
I usually keep my main homepage pretty clear but have calendars and other Widgets on the secondary pages. But the Note Pro is so big there's room to stretch out a bit!
Anyone care to share their Google now apk. Thanks in advance

There's one thing that bugs the crap out of me with the google kitkat launcher. When you hold down on the home screen and it brings up the 3 icons for wallpapers, widgets, and settings. "Settings," when you press it, it takes you to GOOGLE settings. The settings app that most people are unaware even exists. I keep forgetting and clicking on it hoping for the normal settings. Annoys me to no end. I always immediately revert to nova at that time.

Wait .. Isn't that a good thing , no bloat - ware ...
A couple of months back Samsung signed an agreement with Google that they will try to reduce the modifications to the stock Android experience
I think this is the result of that agreement.
The only 4.4 ROM out right now is for the Columbian Wi-Fi version. It could be the same ROM as for other markets or it may not be. Magazine UX is still on the N10.1-14 microsite where it first appeared after the Pro's started shipping. It may mean something or it may not.
http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/2014galaxynote10.1/feature.html
If it does end up permanently missing I won't be too upset. When M-UX was first shown at CES I thought it was cool because there were a ton of widgets and you could create tiles for any installed app. In and of itself it could have been a potential alternate UI. What was released with the Pro's was completely neutered. From three home pages with one being the main home screen it's been reduced to one tagged on at the end of the traditional TW home pages. Most of the widgets left are just modular pieces of My Magazine which means it went from being a hidden pull-up to mandatorily consuming a home page that could be used for other things instead. I use all my home pages so wasn't keen on giving one up to M-UX in its current state. It's not even called Magazine UX anymore. It's now "Content Home."
There is a downside. I was kind of hoping the N10.1-14 would have been made s/w compatible with the Pro's to increase the frequency of updates received. If M-UX and other UI-based features from the Pro's have been left out we'll end up being an odd duck and 4.4 might be the last major update we see. It certainly won't help update timing, that's for sure.
Time will tell...
You really want that bloated crap? I'm glad it's not on there.

If I wanted AOSP I wouldn't have spent what I did on a tablet that has more added on top of Android than any other device on the planet. You'll find this shocking but some folks actually do use the N10.1-14 to get work done and a lot of that "bloated crap" is what makes that possible.
Actually I wasn't talking to you hammer, it was for the op.

My bad. But this is a mixed forum. 1/3 actually use the N10.1-14 as a creation/productivity device as Samsung intended. 1/3 bought if for the high-end h/w, stripped it bare s/w wise, and I guess use it primarily for consumption and gaming. The other 1/3 are somewhere in between. What pleases one group pisses the other off. To each their own.
S Pen and s/w combined are more important to Note purchasers than the h/w. Even the Samsung brand is more important than h/w. Maybe not on XDA but for the rest of the masses that make up 95+% of Note sales. TW won't win any design awards but it does provide a level of functionality, especially on the Note's, that makes having it a positive; at least for me.

We actually agree. Before M-UX got neutered I was cautiously excited. Mostly for the interactive widgets that could be potential productivity boosters and getting more content on each page. As it stands now it's just a space wasting news feed. The Pro's also lost Samsung Hub which we'll retain. Samsung's videos can be stored on external SD and played back in Pop-up-play which is great for long trips.

The version of M-UX in the N12 is crippled like described above. Here's a thread from the N12 forum that discusses what's missing along with a kind of schizophrenic discussion on how to (theoretically) get the missing components back. People in the N12 forum are trying to figure out how to disable/remove M-UX so they can get a normal home page back. The grass is always greener...

if its just two different launchers and a few other apks, i dont see why not. its like how i have blinkfeed and lg home flashed on top of my nexus 5 which is also running the GEL and nova lol
I'm in the "who gives a ****" crowd. It's a bloated gimmick that'd be used one time and abandoned.
Hancom Office
The only thing I'm hoping for when the 4.4 is eleased for U.S. is the Hancom Office software. Won't loose any sleep if they exclude the Magazine UX. I had a Pro 8.4 and a Note 12.2(to big) and really didn't like it.
I have the note 12.2 and I dont use magazine ux. Actually bought nova prime finally for it. Like barry said if it had been released like it was at ces I would have loved it. But as it is it is nuetered and boring. It is still pretty sexy looking imo.

I posted some early impressions of my new Note 4 that arrived Tuesday at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57241199&postcount=40 & how I was looking forward to Android 5L since the current 4.4.4 wasn't much of a software upgrade over my highly customized Note 2 with 4.3 & this video is not very inspiring.. I do want the functionality of Android 5 but I'm still not feeling awesome about the garish design aesthetics & seriously question if Vice President of Design Matias Duarte has the style leadership for the future of Android: http://gizmodo.com/googles-design-mastermind-explains-the-future-of-androi-1596880308

I'm not trying to hate on this current Vice President of Design Matias Duarte but Google & Samsung should continue offering maximum customizability & versatility because TW & stock Android L is far from aesthetically pleasing to many. Thankfully there are other launchers for those not sure if they want to root every device but do I need to rapidly run from stock or be on acid to appreciate such garish design language..WTF-additional & darker-cooler OS themes [email protected]! - don't just force your corporate style on users like Apple..http://officialandroid.blogspot.com/2014/10/android-be-together-not-same.html
I'm starting to get more used to how Android L may be on the Note 4 at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCN2R4A4J2M_VlohhH3Upt8w

Looks like there is a very early build of Lollipop on the Note 4 on video. (From SamMobile)
Looks pretty nice. Let's see what Volta/ART will do for our phones.

Oh wow. That last video...
What's with all the damned white everywhere?? It makes my eyes bleed.
Just got CM 12, for one it actually looks like Android L and not Gingerbread!
Well that looks terrible.

The demise of the menu hard key, is another backwards move IMO. Not only the "BUBBLE GUM" colors of android now, but the fact that the menu button now takes up screen real estate, is absolutely stupid. Not even the Iphone looks as much as a pre teen operating system, as android does now.

Should rephrase that to Samsung Android, AOSP/CM looks amazing. And pretty much android was supposed to ditch hardware keys all together.

Thats an even worse move. Soft Nav bars take up more screen space. Aosp/Cm are fine if you dont want to use the full functions of the Note 4. unless they have figured out a way to implement the Spen sdk. I will wait till someone like BoBcat releases a rom, then see if he will let me port it to T-mobile

Not really because than phones are smaller because they need less space. Reason why a 6" Screen phone is the same size as our 5.7" phone. Also Spen works just fine on AOSP/CM has since like CM10.

No matter what size the phone is Soft navigation bars take up screen space. Until we get a bezel-less screen, nav bars are ridiculous. LG G3 is a perfect example. It has a bezel at the bottom of the screen, yet has a soft nav bar. If they had put hardware buttons on it, they would save screen space. I might even still own it too...

Yeah but buttons still take up space also and your point?
http://i-cdn.phonearena.com/images/...oogle-Nexus-6-vs-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-4-01.jpg
Notice the Nexus 6 is the same size almost and gasp has more screen space with the soft nav bar which you can also change down to like 8dpi so it will take almost no space
The buttons are also immersive...

Lowered DPI: Massive waste of screen real estate

I lowered the DPI on my Note 4 (910F) via terminal with
Code:
wm 520
and now on the main screen there's a huge gap between the bottom icons and the apps icons area. same for the apps drawer as you can see in the photos.
I'm not very keen on the idea of installing a launcher. from what I've seen the coords for these areas should be in a file somewhere. does anyone have any ideas?

If you are rooted you can use one of those exposed modules to apply different dpi per apps. Otherwise you cannot re-engineer Samsung apps for different dpi, at least not in an easy manner.

yeah, I thought about that. but that's not the ideal situation as the main reasons why I lowered the dpi was so the icons on the home screen and drawer would be smaller and I'd have more room, also so fonts and elements across the system would be smaller. I just think it's a real waste to have a device with such a large screen and everything looking so big. not to mention the fact that it's bad for privacy as any one within a few feet can clearly see what's on the screen.
I'm using a launcher for the time being, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to.

Stock launchers are a joke so why use them?
Just use nova or any other one. then u can customize sizes of everything.
text size u can adjust in settings also.

this isn't about whether stock launchers are good or bad. I personally hate TouchWiz because it's too colourful, too childish for my taste. but throwing another launcher on top of it is just not the ideal. when you use a launcher, you're not replacing the stock one. the stock launcher is still running behind the scenes eating up resources as far as I know. so you have to compromise: you either put up with something ugly and not that useful or you lose processing power and consequently battery.
the only reason why I'm sticking with the stock ROM for my Note 4 is because I've tried all S-Pen apps/mods for custom ROMs I could find and none, absolutely not one of them works as well as the one the comes with the phone. and I use that a LOT!
I don't need multi-windows, I don't need fingerprint scanner, I don't even need the camera to be honest. I need the S-Pen to work flawlessly. and until I get that on a CM ROM I have to find a way to deal with my problems with the stock ROM.

try custom stock ROM such as DR.Ketan latest ROM DPI is 560.
Or just root then xposed. What I do with stock rom remove cap and tweak it.

phone is rooted and xposed. I couldn't find a module for the xposed frameword that would handle that. I'm not sure now as I've read through so many threads my memory is a bit scrambled at this point, but I think the guy who created XTouchWiz said he would not take requests. I think if anyone knew about this setting it would be him, I'm thinking about PM'ing him.
on a note, I am a developer and I find it very unlikely that the width and height for those areas would be hardcoded.

He does not released rom based on N910F but using kernel he recommend and data fix it can run on N910F if you read on his thread many N910F users use dr ketan latest ROM.
